| | | | 03/21/10 07:27 AM | California +6 vs. Duke by: Andrew Lange
At home, there were few teams as dominant as Duke from a spread perspective. The Blue Devils not only covered at frequent rate in Durham but a majority of the time did so laying double-digits. On the road, like most of the top tier teams in the country, wins were less frequent and triumphs by margin proved slightly more difficult. The Blue Devils lost five times away from Cameron Indoor and were tested enough in either other games that tonight’s pointspread would be in question. That is not to say that California didn’t have its issues away from Berkeley, but I’ve always been a believer that Duke’s mystique is far less potent on the highway. Fundamentally, when playing against Duke, I look for opposing teams that can at least match their size and speed. California fits that profile with speedy Jerome Randall’s ability to get in the paint and size in the frontcourt. And like Duke, the Golden Bears are efficiency darlings who take high percentage Read more

4:03 - 12-4, 75% morning for the Sportsmemo Crew's service plays! Good job guys. Rob Veno thhe lead story with a big 4-0. 20* Blue Chip from Robbie goes off tonight.
3:44 - The key to playing with an even beating Wisconsin is to force the issue on offense. Teams that sit back a swing the ball hoping for a good look stand no chance. Wofford in this game because they are finally looking to score.
3:35 - Otto on Purdue, Veno on the over...nice.
3:25 - Jackson's first free throw looked like a WWII anti-aircraft gun...and it went in.
3:22 - Marty,"Purdue is one of the worst situational free throw shooting teams in the country." Lewis Jackson just missed the front end of a one-and-one. Nice call Otto.
3:11 - WOFFORD!!!
2:57 - Tim just quizzed everyone on Kansas City's starting Read more

| | 03/19/10 09:37 AM | Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl – “Ohio is a lot like we were at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, relying on 3s,’’ Pearl said of the Bobcats who upset No. 3 Georgetown in the first round earlier Thursday. “We shot ourselves past Alabama and Boston College that year. I guarantee it that Ohio thought it could beat Georgetown and I guarantee you they think they can beat us.’’
Villanova head coach Jay Wright – “I’m going to start by saying how impressed I was with Robert Morris. What a great team. What effort. They were tough defensively. They battled us on the boards. They were smart. I think we might have had a little more depth. I don’t know if we had better players. We had more depth. The point guard was a big difference. They deserve so much credit.’’
Kansas head coach Bill Self – “They (Northern Iowa) are as sound defensively as any team we’ve played in a while, not just this Read more

| | 03/19/10 09:32 AM | The headline in the Houston Chronicle reads "Opposites Collide as UH faces Maryland". I would hardly call these two teams opposites. Let's review the numbers.
Houston, noted for it's high octane offense, rates as the 20th fastest team in terms of adjusted tempo nationally. They rank 41st in adjusted offensive efficiency and just outside the top 100 in three point shooting.
Maryland rates as the 53rd team in terms of adjusted tempo. The rank fourth in adjusted offensive efficiency and 20th in three point shooting. This is a team that has no problem running-n-gunning.
We do see a significant gap in defensive efficiency (UH ranks 170th while Maryland ranks 35th) but that hardly makes the styles of an opposite nature.
No, this matchup is two similar teams. If you want the opposite of Houston you might look at a team like Princeton. The Ivy Leaguers played at a tempo that rated 344th this season with an offense that ranked 231st and a defense that ranked 30th.

| | 03/19/10 07:12 AM | Memphis at Ole Miss O/U 149 by: Andrew Lange
Not a whole lot of attention is going to be placed on tonight’s Ole Miss vs. Memphis second round NIT tilt but that is fine by me. I’ve had a lot of success playing these secondary tournaments over the total because in a lot of cases, neither team puts forth a monster effort. No matter what level of basketball you watch, players love offense and they love to score so logically, the first thing to go when efforts wanes is defense. Ole Miss hasn’t played much defense even with the season on the line and as we know, they prefer a quick pace. Throw out two games against offensively inept LSU and the Rebels allowed 73.1 ppg to SEC foes. Memphis would rank behind only Kentucky in the SEC’s offensive efficiency category and like Ole Miss, the Tigers aren’t exactly the lockdown defensive team of past. With the exception of Memphis, C-USA features only one team (Houston) inside the top 50 nationally in points per possession which should throw Read more

| | 03/18/10 07:25 PM | Here are some observations on day one of the NCAA Tournament from Andrew Lange
- I would make the play on Vanderbilt -3 again but it shows that there are instances when you need to take a step back and respect the market place. We saw little resistance after the early money came in on Murray State and even when it moved back to -3, a couple of key shops were still sitting at -2.5. In terms of what happened in the actual game, my hat goes off to Murray. It was tough to have too much confidence in their resume but the gap between them and Vanderbilt was obviously small. The Commodores didn’t play with much urgency for much of the game and by halftime your gut was telling you Murray was moving on to round two.
- Go back to late January and check out what Georgetown’s defense allowed: 73, 77, 72, 90, 70, 71, 75, 60, 78 and 81. The Hoyas gave up 97 to Ohio. A shocker indeed, but it is clear that Ken Pomeroy’s 33rd ranked defense is a fake.
- While playing with my son with Read more

| | 03/18/10 09:50 AM | When I need to find a link to a Game Tracker or online TV feed for a college basketball game I often go to the ESPN box score conversation link which typically features a lot of college kids chatting back and forth who like to bet on their favorite team or the over. Most of the time I don’t pay attention but lately there has been some absolutely priceless betting commentary. We are going to keep a running diary of some of the “locks” and “bad beats” throughout the tournament. Copied as is…enjoy.

| | 03/18/10 09:38 AM | California, ahead of their game with Louisville on Friday, has suspended forward Omondi Amoke. The 6-8 big man has started a number of games for Cal this season and averages just under 20 minutes per contest.
The suspension is detailed as a violation of team rules. The remaining front line players for Mike Montgomery to choose from are 7-foot center Max Zhang (who averaged about 10 minutes per game this season) and Sanders-Frison (who averaged about 14 minutes per game).
Louisville has some size inside with Samuels leading the charge.

| | 03/18/10 08:50 AM | There are some interesting quotes below from signonsandiego.com regarding the Aztecs' take on Tennessee and the expected tempo of the game. While the Vols may not seem like they are playing a fast pace this year, Ken Pom's numbers show they rank 68th nationally, a small increase from last year's 76th. The difference is clearly offensive and defensive efficiency. Last season they ranked 21st in offense and 73rd in defense. This season, a complete transformation with the 103rd ranked offense and 8th ranked defense. So while the Vols' depth issues have caused them to play at a more moderate pace compared to Bruce Pearl’s earlier days, it is the lack of offensive weaponry -- and sound defense -- that has kept his squad from producing their typical 140-point game scores. Today’s total against San Diego State is currently posted at 127 across the board.

Apr. 7, 2006: Bobby Gonzalez is introduced as Seton Hall's head men's basketball coach, ending a search that began when Louis Orr was fired weeks earlier. Said athletic director Joe Quinlan at the press conference, "The passion which you will see ... is not a game. It's not a show. He is real."
Nov. 11, 2006: Seton Hall records the first of 66 wins during Gonzalez's tenure, a 91-52 victory over Division 2 Caldwell College.
December 2006: In an effort to generate support for the program, Gonzalez goes door to door delivering pizza to students in their dorms. At his last game as coach Tuesday, the 87-69 loss to Texas Tech in the NIT, the student section chanted for him to be fired.
