College Football Betting Preview: SMU Mustangs at Memphis Tigers

SMU at Memphis
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPNN
CRIS Opener: Memphis -11.5 O/U 77
CRIS Current: Memphis -12.5 O/U 71.5
Recommendation: SMU

Seen this total get played down nearly a touchdown due to forecasted winds in the 20+ mph range. That’s an obvious concern for two teams in SMU and Memphis that like to throw the football. The passing games will still be on display but the deep shots could be limited. In terms of running the ball, SMU could have an advantage with stronger conference numbers than Memphis. Against AAC foes, the Mustangs average 5.2 ypc and 181.8 ypg. The Tigers are a notch below at 4.7 ypc and 150.7 ypg. Defensively, there isn't much that separates either squad. Memphis' overall numbers are slightly better but SMU's took a hit after back-to-back games against the potent offenses of UCF and Navy in which the defense allowed nearly 8 ypp combined.

I think the real storyline here is the seemingly inflated pointspread. Memphis is one of the hottest teams in the country having won and covered five straight (some got a push in 30-27 win over Navy). Read more

SMU at Navy
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener: Navy -4.5 O/U 67
CRIS Current: Navy -3.5 O/U 68
Recommendation: SMU

After starting the season 5-0, Navy's schedule started to tighten and they find itself on a rare three-game losing streak. The SOS difficulty continues on Saturday with a very capable SMU coming to town. The Mustangs rank among the nation's leaders in pass plays beyond 20 yards (49). That spells problems for a Navy secondary that has routinely been exposed against potent passing attacks. The Midshipmen surrendered 34, 31, 30 and 45 points in their last four games; showing an inability to get stops or get off the field on third down.

On the flip side, Navy’s triple option attack has not been as reliable as it’s been in past seasons. Offensively, the Middies are down about a half yard per play compared to 2016. And of over their last three games, they’ve averaged a very pedestrian 5.0 ypp. SMU’s defense is far from elite, but if you eliminate games vs. upper-tier TCU and UCF, the Mustangs are allowing a respectable 5.8 Read more

UCF at SMU
Saturday, 4:15 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener: UCF -12 O/U 73.5
CRIS Current: UCF -14.5 O/U 72.5
Recommendation: Over

The tremendous balance of UCF’s offense (313.1 ypg passing, 15th nationally; 216.5 ypg rushing, 26th nationally) is going to give SMU a ton of problems on Saturday. The Mustangs have an average at-best stop unit in terms of AAC play but it’s important to note they have yet to face Memphis, South Florida (who they don’t play), and UCF who arguably make up the top three offenses in the league. SMU’s numbers against the run look solid but eliminate the -8 yards they allowed to UConn and things get ugly. TCU, Houston, Cincinnati, and Tulsa all went for 245+ on the ground against the Mustangs. That resulted in 38.3 ppg allowed and the scary thing is UCF is just as explosive if not more than all for other those squads. A typical UCF output suggests it will have no trouble topping 45 points.

On the flip side, SMU should have some success offensively as well with quarterback Ben Hicks (60.1%, 19-6 TD-INT ratio) chucking Read more

College Football Handicapping: Houston hopes third string quarterback will solve offensive woes

11.01.2017     10:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Lack of consistent quarterback play has been a big problem for the Houston Cougars with Kyle Postma and Kyle Allen combining to throw more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (9). Last week, third stringer D'Eriq King entered that game on the third series and helped the Cougars engineer a 28-24 upset over the Bulls. Head coach Major Applewhite justifiably said King will start Saturday's game against East Carolina. King had previously been used as a receiver (29 catches, 264 yards). It's very conceivable he could run wild with East Carolina currently dead last nationally in total defense (577.6 ypg allowed).

Houston at South Florida
Saturday, 12:45 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener: South Florida -10 O/U 57.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -11 O/U 56.5
Recommendation: South Florida

Houston has taken a major step back during the post Tom Herman/Greg Ward Jr. era. Major Applewhite is in his first season as head coach and the Cougars are a underachieving 4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS through seven games. One of the biggest issues has been mediocre quarterback play from the duo of Kyle Allen and Kyle Postma. And once thought to be a strength, the defense has been ripped apart in each of the last two weeks giving up 40+ points in consecutive games to Tulsa and Memphis. The Cougars were able to knock off Arizona prior to the return of Khalil Tate, they beat lowly Rice, notched a 7-point win against Temple but failed to cover and were able to take down SMU by double-digits despite being outgained by 81 yards. They also failed to come up with a key stop last week against Memphis as the Tigers came from behind and stole one on the road. Houston is now on a 1-4 ATS slide and facing without question its Read more

UCF at Navy
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener: UCF -6.5 O/U 65
CRIS Current: UCF -7 O/U 65
Recommendation: Over

The UCF Knights have not just beaten the pointspread this season, they have annihilated it by a combined 100 points for an average of 20 ppg. They have an explosive and balanced offense that averages 548 ypg at 8.1 ypp. It’s a unit to I project will give an undersized Navy defense plenty of problems. Despite playing two options teams (Tulane and Air Force), the Midshipmen defense has been average at best (6.2 ypp allowed) this season and heads into Saturday on the heels of back-to-back hard fought barn burners that came down to the last possession. UCF marks a huge step up in class and I could very easily see the Knights wearing down Navy’s defense in the second half which should lead to big chunks of yards.

UCF's defense has also looked the part this season (16.8 ppg allowed) but the schedule comes up a little light with four of its five opponents currently ranked 75th or worse in total offense. Navy is arguably the modest capable Read more

BYU at East Carolina
Saturday, 4 pm PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener: BYU -7.5 O/U 55
CRIS Current: BYU -5.5 O/U 58
Recommendation: Under

East Carolina has played a really tough schedule thus far, particularly when it comes to opposing offenses. West Virginia and UCF are tied for fifth nationally in total offense. South Florida ranks 13th. Virginia Tech ranks 25th. And UConn ranks a respectable 49th. You can't use the schedule alone as a reason for ECU's horrific defense numbers but BYU's offense is arguably one of the worst in the country meaning the Pirates are in position to put up at least some resistance in this matchup.

You can make a strong argument that BYU's opposing defense SOS is just as strong as ECU's opposing offense SOS. The Cougars have faced the likes of LSU, Wisconsin, Utah, and Boise State. But even when pitted up against softer stop units like Portland State and Utah State, BYU still struggled to move the football and put points on the board. The other thing to consider is pace. East Carolina typically plays at a fast clip in part because they are Read more

Navy at Memphis

CRIS Opener: Memphis -5.5 O/U 74.5
CRIS Current: Memphis -3 O/U 71
Recommendation: Over

I am not sure either of these squads are well equipped to shut down what the other team does well offensively. Navy’s defense, which is playing more man-to-man, will be asked to defend one of the best passing attacks they’ll see this season. Memphis’ Riley Ferguson leads an offense that is averaging over 500 ypg including 316 ypg through the air. The combination of Ferguson to receiver Anthony Miller has been spectacular as Miller hauled in 15 receptions for 224 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns in last week’s 70-point outburst vs. UConn. Navy’s newly implemented defense, in theory, is supposed to create more pressure on the opposing quarterbacks and force more turnovers. Unfortunately, they’ve picked off only two passes and currently rank 123rd nationally in yards per pass attempt allowed (8.9). As we saw last week vs. Air Force (8.6 ypp), this is a stop unit that is ripe to allow big plays. On Read more

Tulsa at Tulane
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener: Tulane -3 O/U 61.5
CRIS Current: Tulane -4.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Under

Very unique situation for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane as their trip to Tulane marks the third straight week they've faced an option-based offense. Despite failing to cover both contests vs. Navy and New Mexico, I came away somewhat impressed with Tulsa's defense. After allowing over 9 yards per play to up-tempo Oklahoma State, UL-Lafayette and Toledo, the Golden Hurricane held the Midshipmen and Lobos to 47 points and 6.6 ypp combined. Saturday's game marks another situation where Tulsa's stop unit should perform at an adequate level as Tulane ranks 102nd nationally in total offense vs. Navy and New Mexico who rank 18th and 38th, respectively.

Tulane's defense is talented and has the potential to be the best unit in the AAC. They aren't necessarily built to stop top-tier attacks (Oklahoma hung 56 points and 10.2 ypp) but Tulsa's offense, specifically its passing game, has taken a big step back this season following the departure of Read more

Memphis at UConn
Friday, 4 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Memphis -14 O/U 70
CRIS Current: Memphis -13.5 O/U 72
Recommendation: Over

Things have not broken right for Memphis in the early going. The Tigers played their opening game against Louisiana-Monroe in the midst of the remnants of Hurricane Harvey – a torrential downpour throughout most of the contest. They had to cancel their game the next week because of Hurricane Irma in Florida. Following the wild upset win over UCLA, the Tigers looked flat against Southern Illinois the following week. Last week, facing UCF, the Tigers got whipped, turning the ball over four times on offense while allowing more than 600 yards on defense.

Make no mistake about it – Memphis is loaded with the type of skill position talent that UConn can’t cover. With QB Riley Ferguson returning for his senior year, 103 career starts back on the offensive line and the likes of RB’s Darrell Henderson and Patrick Taylor (combined more than 6.5 yards per carry) WR’s Anthony Miller, Phil Mayhue and Tony Pollard (37 Read more
