College Basketball Free Pick: North Texas Mean Green at Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans

North Texas at Arkansas-Little Rock -3 O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Arkansas-Little Rock

If a bettor had the foresight to back these two teams all year, he would be smiling all the way to the bank. North Texas has gone 15-5-1 ATS and just had an 11-0-1 pointspread streak snapped with a home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette. UALR has been even better, going 18-6 ATS for the season. The Trojans have been the biggest surprise of the Sun Belt with their 11-3 conference record that includes a win at North Texas in late December. They lead the West Division and can clinch it outright with a win tonight. Little Rock is playing at full strength again after freshman forward Will Neighbour was injured back in late December. He returned two weeks later, but went from playing 30 minutes a game to less than 20 in his first seven games back. He has averaged 30 minutes over the last four games – all wins – and chipped in 16 ppg. Look for the home side to complete the season sweep of the Mean Green tonight.

Arkansas-Little Rock +6 at UL-Lafayette O/U 129
Recommendation: Arkansas-Little Rock

Two of the top teams in the Sun Belt meet for round two of their season series tonight in Lafayette. Arkansas-Little Rock is 8-2 in conference play with identical 4-1 home and road marks. They have already won at North Texas and Denver and their only loss was a game in which they fell apart late at Western Kentucky. UALR allowed a five-point lead to turn into a 12-point loss in the final five minutes of that game. ULL handed UALR its only conference home loss three weeks ago, winning 68-49. Little Rock comes into this game on another streak with three straight home wins. The Cajuns are also hot, winning four in a row to push their Sun Belt mark to 8-3. Lafayette has struggled at home, however, with their last four home games resulting in an overtime win, a 2-point win, another overtime win and a loss to South Alabama. Their blowout of UALR on the road and their conference opening win against FAU are the Cajuns only double-digit wins of the year. Take the points here.

NC-Wilmington at Georgia State -12.5 O/U 132.5
It will be interesting to see how first-year head coach Ron Hunter’s Panthers handle this home game after going through a three-game CAA gauntlet. Tough struggles with fellow league kingpins Drexel, VCU and George Mason resulted in  2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS records but can GSU bring the same energy and focus tonight at home against fast paced NC-Wilmington? The Seahawks will be without starting forward Donte Morales who is averaging 22 minutes per game. Star forward Keith Rendelman (56.6 FG%, 15.2 ppg) picked up his second CAA Player of the Week award this past week.

Arkansas-Little Rock -2.5 at UL-Monroe O/U 118.5
Without their leading scorer, rebounder and three-point shooter, 6-10 Will Neighbour (Sun Belt POW Dec 25-31), the Trojans offense mustered just 91 points during his two-game absence. Granted those contests were versus SEC power Kentucky and defensive minded conference foe Florida Atlantic, but UALR shot 30% and 31% from the field. Neighbour is listed as Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: UNC-Asheville vs. Arkansas-Little Rock

No. 16 UNC-Asheville -4 vs. No. 16 Arkansas-Little Rock O/U 128.5
Rob Veno Power Ratings:  UNC-Asheville -0.5

Quick Take: The Big South was a non-boarded league but Ken Pom and Sagarin don’t show much overall difference compared to the Sun Belt. Asheville finished third in the Big South during the regular season but won the conference tournament. The Bulldogs play at a fast pace and were the Big South’s top defense during league play thanks to a high pressure system predicated on creating turnovers. Arkansas-Little Rock went 7-9 in Sun Belt play but got hot and ran the table in the conference tournament. The Trojans play at a moderate pace and do most of their damage with the three-point shot. They were the Sun Belt’s top team from beyond the arch (40.4%) in conference play but hit only 43.7% of their two-pointers. Little Rock is led by Sun Belt Player of the Year, Solomon Bozeman, who hit the game-winning Read more

Tournament foes impact North Texas at Arkansas-Little Rock matchup

03.01.2011     08:21 AM     Printer Friendly
North Texas at Arkansas-Little Rock -2.5 O/U 145

Interesting scenario for tonight's Sun Belt regular season finale between North Texas and Arkansas-Little Rock. The winner of tonight's game earns the fourth seed while the loser gets the fifth seed. The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is held at a neutral site in Hot Springs, Arkansas so there is no home court to play for. What is riding on the game – others than pride and ASU's senior night – is who these teams will be facing in the conference tournament. The winner gets South Alabama while the loser plays Troy – no real difference between the two teams. But who awaits in the second round is worth noting. Tonight's victor who be pitted up against the Sun Belt's top team, Florida Atlantic, should they advance, whereas the loser, should they advance, would face a weaker Arkansas State squad. The difference between FAU (21-9, 11-3) Read more

Arkansas-Little Rock at North Texas -9 O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Over

Arkansas-Little Rock is not a good defensive team and the result show. When pitted up against better than average offenses, the Trojans routinely allowed big scores. St. Bonaventure, Oral Roberts, Missouri State, Ole Miss and Akron all scored 75+ and tonight's opponent North Texas may be the best of the bunch. The Mean Green are once again one of the most efficient teams in the country; able to score from all over the court. They are averaging nearly 80 ppg and look poised to match that number at home tonight. The pace of this game should be swift, just like North Texas likes it. The results in this series have featured game scores of 148, 138 (regulation), 161, 166, 143, 161. There was a low scoring game back in 2009, but it wasn't because the pace was slow but rather just a poor shooting night from both schools. Over the last seven games in the series, only once did we see a total lower than 136.5 and only once did it land under the Read more

Basketball beat writer sure loves to use gambling metaphors

12.17.2010     01:21 PM     Printer Friendly
It isn't uncommon to see journalists use various forms of gambling lingo in order to describe a particular event. Andy Reid's gamble on fourth down worked or Ohio State is hoping to parlay (something good) into (something better) are just a few generic examples of oft-used Vegas-based jargon. But one writer for the Houston Press took things to a completely different level. Last night Rice won by double-digits in a nondescript game against Arkansas-Little Rock, yet the game recap reads like Benny Binion doing freelance work for the AP. We are only speculating here, but the theme of the article may have had something to do with the Owls' upcoming three-game tournament in Las Vegas. Hopefully our new favorite beat writer will be in attendance.

The game had a bit of a gambling feel to it as the Trojans, to start the game, were as hot from the three-point line as the guy who gets on the Read more
