MLB Gambling Notes: The list of starting pitcher injuries is comically long

06.20.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
We’ve never really tracked starting pitching injuries league-wide but it seems like there are an awful lot of guys currently on the shelf. This is just a rough estimate, but close to 33% of the league’s starting pitchers are hurt – everything from a skipped start to out for the season.

MLB Gambling Free Play: Oakland A's at Colorado Rockies

Oakland (Colon) +105 at Colorado (Guthrie) O/U 10.5
Recommendation: Oakland

Colorado (24-35) is just 15-18 at Coors Field this season and winless in its last seven Interleague home games. They once dominated these Interleague games on their home turf in the light air going 45-19. But tough times have hit the Rockies as they have lost five straight games and boast MLB’s worst pitching with a 5.31 ERA and .297 batting average against (BAA).

I don’t back favorites with very poor pitching while they struggle to score and win. The Rockies continue to play without star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and despite 8 runs scored Sunday, they scored just 2, 1, 0, 4, 3 and 2 runs in six of their previous seven games. Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie is downright awful this season with poor skill sets and stats. He’s been very hittable with a .324 BAA and 69 hits allowed in 51 innings. He’s also allowed 12 home runs with just 23 strikeouts. Oh, and his ERA is 6.35 including Read more

MLB Handicapping: A banged up Bartolo Colon nears 100-inning mark

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York (Colon) at Tampa Bay (Hellickson) -105 O/U 8.5

Back-to-back concerning starts for New York's Bartolo Colon. Prior to the All-Star break, he was smacked around for five runs in 5.2 innings (4 walks, 1 strikeout) against Tampa Bay. Last Thursday against Toronto, he lasted only two-thirds of an inning (6 hits, 8 runs, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, 0 strikeouts) after seemingly tweaking his hamstring in an attempt to cover first base. In his defense, the inning was prolonged by an error and a couple of "swinging bunt" base hits. Still, Colon is 38 years old, has a gimp hamstring, and hasn't topped 100 innings since 2005.

Bartolo Colon's IP the last six seasons
2006 - 56.1
2007 - 99.1
2008 - 39.0
2009 - 62.1
2010 - DNP

New York Yankees (Colon) at Toronto Blue Jays (Reyes)
Recommendation: OVER

Many bettors are shy about taking Overs immediately following the All Star Break, expecting the pitchers to have the better rhythm than the hitters following their only vacation of the entire season. That wiseguy reluctance to bet Overs on this particular day gives us a very reasonable number to bet Over as post-break play resumes tonight.

This is not a matchup of aces, by any stretch of the imagination. Bartolo Colon put up impressive first half numbers, but his 90 innings of work so far in 2011 is his most since 2007. He’s largely been a second half non-factor since 2005. We can expect a regression from this first half overachiever. Considering that Toronto bashed him for six runs in six innings of work the last time he faced them, it’s reasonable to predict continues offensive success from the Jays tonight. Read more

MLB Betting Stock Watch: New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies

Sell – New York Yankees – The Yankees have enjoyed a fabulous first half of the baseball season with a 53-35 record. A one-unit bet on every game the Yankees played this season and you’d be up roughly six to seven units. Much has worked out for the Bronx Bombers including the starting pitching of veterans Bartolo Colon and Freddie Garcia.

Colon is showing a 3.20 ERA, while Garcia owns a 3.13 number and both figures will be tricky to duplicate in the second half of the season. Their schedule was very friendly in the first half as well, which included 49 home games to just 39 on the road. With a veteran bunch built to win in Yankee Stadium this is a disparity to pay attention to.

The bullpen has been great as well, while owning the fifth best ERA in baseball at 3.11. With a banged up Mariano Rivera and while still dealing with other injuries this unit has perhaps peaked this season.

In addition, let’s consider the injury to Alex Read more

MLB Handicapping: Yankees pitching slated for regression

06.10.2011     10:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Joba Chamberlain's impending Tommy John surgery not only hurts New York's bullpen depth but allows us to break down exactly what we can expect from the team moving forward. To date, the Yankees have exceeded expectations on the mound. The team's ERA (3.68) is good for fourth in the American League and the bullpen has been dominant (2.93, 1st AL). But in analyzing the staff, it becomes very apparent that we can expect serious regressions in the not so distant future.

Bartolo Colon - Even if you buy into Colon's resurgence, he hasn't tossed more than 100 innings since 2005. If healthy (a big if!), he's capable of giving the team quality innings but at this stage in his career, his track record suggests his 3.39 ERA won't hold up.

Freddy Garcia - Similar situation to Colon; Garcia enjoyed a three-year “hiatus" of 129 innings in three seasons (2007-09). Last year he threw 152 innings for the White Sox and broke down after the All-Star break (5.10 ERA, 60 IP, 10 HRs, 29Ks). Read more
