College Football Betting: After two ugly losses, reeling Baylor makes switch at quarterback

09.13.2017     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With losses to Liberty, UTSA, and the Waco High School JV squad to open the season, Baylor will make a switch at quarterback with transfer Anu Solomon being replace by last year's part-time starter, Zach Smith. Smith threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns in Baylor's bowl win over Boise State the team's only win in its last nine tries. How about some +14 at Duke this weekend, bettors?

"We're going to turn to [Smith] and let him do his thing," Rhule said, making the announcement on the Big 12 coaches teleconference.

"These kids have been through a tough stretch ... They've won one of the last nine games," Rhule said. "They're looking for something good to happen."

College Football Gambling: A quick look at first-year coordinators

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Yesterday we posted a chart on all of the head coach changes for the upcoming college football season. More often than not, with new coaches comes new coordinators. Below is a list of some of the more prominent names.

California - The Golden Bears appear to be going in the opposite direction of former head coach Sonny Dykes' "all offense, no defense" system. First-year head coach Justin Wilcox has been a DC for much of his career and brought along longtime Air Force HC Tim DeRuyter to serve as DC. Beau Baldwin, who turned Eastern Washington into a FCS powerhouse, was named OC.

UConn - It's been years since the Huskies posted even average offensive numbers. Randy Edsall return to Storrs and looks for former Auburn OC Rhett Lashlee to help turn things around.

Florida Atlantic - Not shy about turmoil, Lane Kiffin went ahead and picked up former Baylor OC Kendal Briles to run the offense. Kiffin has been candid about saying Briles will have "complete control" of the play calling. That is until the Owls fail to score a touchdown Read more

College Football Betting: Baylor's dumpster fire continues to burn

11.29.2016     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Obviously a lot going on with the Baylor Bears these days including five consecutive losses both straight up and against the spread. Of those five losses, four came by 19 points or more. Head coach Jim Grobe recently announced that he will step aside after the season. Recruits have been bailing left and right. Yet despite all that, Baylor AD Mack Rhoades said that the team intends on participating in the postseason. Before they get there, the Bears must travel to Morgantown. West Virginia was quickly bet up from -16 to -17.

"Our intent, at this time, is to accept a bowl bid for our student-athletes who have worked so hard to earn it over the course of this season," Rhoades said in a statement provided to ESPN. "Our focus, as it has been throughout

College Football Betting Preview: Baylor Bears at Texas Longhorns

Baylor at Texas
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Baylor -2.5 O/U 70
CRIS Current: Baylor -3 O/U 69
Recommendation: Over

After going under the total in two straight games, I look for Texas' beleaguered defense to be exposed yet again when they face Baylor on Saturday. It's been a constant theme this season that capable offenses can move the ball at will against the Longhorns. Over a three-game swatch against California, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma, UT allowed 1,734 yards at a startling 7.3 yards per play.

Perhaps more important to this handicapper is how flawed Baylor's defensive numbers are. The Bears' schedule comes up ultra-light with games against Northwestern State, SMU, Rice, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Kansas. There is one game in particular that stands out as alarming and that's what Iowa State was able to do with the football against the Bears a few weeks back. The Cyclones posted arguably their best offensive showing of the year with 204 yards on the ground and 261 through the air. All told, ISU averaged over 6 yards per play.

College Football Betting Preview: Baylor Bears at Iowa State Cyclones

Baylor at Iowa State
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
Baylor -16.5 O/U 59
CRIS Current: Baylor -17 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Over

It's not too often you see Baylor involved in a game with a total in the low 60's. In fact, Saturday will mark the lowest total for the Bears since midseason 2014. Even last year's trip to Manhattan to face slow paced and ultra-conservative Kansas State State closed 67. Also interesting is the fact that last year's meeting against Iowa State closed 74.5; it landed just short with Baylor winning in Ames, 45-27.

ISU has shown no ability to stop the high octane offenses in the Big XII. Last season, against Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, the Cyclones allowed 48.6 ppg. And thanks to playing from behind in a majority of those contests, ISU proved capable of putting the ball in the end zone with scores of 31, 21, 27, 16, and 31. In the end, all five of those contests topped 61 points (73.8 average). Against TCU earlier this season, Iowa State coughed up 41 in just over three quarters as the Horned Frogs were content to sit on the ball late. Read more

SMU at Baylor
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
Baylor -32 O/U 76
CRIS Current: Baylor -32 O/U 76
Recommendation: Over

SMU went 1-11 in 2014, and the one win came in their season finale against an equally dismal 2-10 UConn squad.  Last year, Chad Morris – the architect of the Clemson offense that hung 40 on Alabama in the National Championship Game in January – took over as head coach.  There was a thorough housecleaning.  Former Texas A&M quarterback Matt Davis – a top 10 dual threat prospect coming out of high school – got his feet wet in the first year as the starter and in Morris’ offense. But it wasn’t a successful season as SMU went 2-10.

This year, Davis is ready to take the next step, and SMU is primed to explode into an uptempo, high scoring offensive juggernaut.  Their skill position talent has been dramatically upgraded – talented, fast kids want to play in this offense – and they’re healthy.  After being forced to start freshmen on the line last year, this year, Read more

College Football Gambling: Baylor set to bring in former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe

05.31.2016     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In full-on damage control mode, Baylor has decided to bring in former Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe on an interim basis. Grobe put together an impressive stretch three-year stretch from 2006-08 where the Demon Deacons went 28-12 thanks in large part to a +39 combined turnover margin. He failed to produce a winning season after that and eventually resigned in 2013. As Grobe mentioned following the announcement, winning will likely take a backseat to cleaning up what has evolved into a total mess. The Bears' season over/under wins opened 9un-125 and has since been bet down to 9un-160. Baylor opens the season with its annual three "gimmie" wins (Northwestern State, SMU, and Rice).

"He has successfully led two FBS programs during his career," McCaw said in the statement. "Coach Grobe enjoys an impeccable reputation within the intercollegiate athletics community and is a man of great integrity and faith."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Clemson vs. Alabama Betting Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One thing has legitimately changed in the four team playoff era, compared to the BCS Championship era that just ended prior to last year.  Instead of having three weeks to prepare for the title game, teams now have three weeks to prepare for a semi-final game, with a much shorter turnaround time prior to the title game.  The three previous national titles that Nick Saban won at Alabama all came under at least somewhat different circumstances than the title game they’ll play in next Monday.

When we take a look back at the national championship teams over the last decade, we can get a decent idea of the commonalities between those teams and use that to project forward for this year. Texas in 2005, Florida in 2006, LSU in 2007, Florida in 2008, Alabama in 2009, Auburn in 2010, Alabama in 2011 and 2012, Florida State in 2013 and Ohio State in 2014 combine to give us a profile worth noting.

The #1 commonality the last ten champions had is elite level talent.  That may sound obvious – it is obvious – but there are metrics worthy of mention that give an advantage to Alabama over Clemson.  Each of the last ten champs had a recruiting Read more
