College Basketball Betting Free Play: Baylor Bears at Texas Longhorns

Baylor at Texas -2.5 O/U 133.5
Recommendation: Under

After an inexplicable three-game stretch where Baylor had a complete lapse of defense, the Bears have regained its identity. The Bears current 3-0 straight up and against the spread run comes on the heels of a 1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS mark where they allowed 90, 81 and 98 points and 52% FG shooting or better in all three. The catalyst for Baylor’s recent ticket cashing threesome has really been a combination of trademark defense and ball sharing on offense. Baylor is now 5-7 in Big XII play after a 2-8 start which brought the team to a crossroads. Nuni Omot said, “We got together and told ourselves that it’s going to be a fight, but we really have to do it for each other”. “We’re starting to do it for each other and we’re starting to share the ball and we’re starting to look for everyone. That’s the biggest part, we’re just playing together.”

Texas sits at 5-7 in league play right now too so with six games left, this one is obviously important to them as well. Unlike Baylor, the Longhorns stout defense has currently Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Indiana Hoosiers at Illinois Fighting Illini

Indiana at Illinois -2 O/U 143.5
Recommendation: Illinois

You heard Tom Izzo say after Michigan State's win on Monday night that Illinois was "the best 0-8 team in the country." You could also call them one of the unluckiest teams in the country with three overtime losses and another by a single point. The Illini are still a "bottom tier" Big Ten squad but a couple of bounces their way and instead of 0-8, they could easily be 3-5 or even 4-4. Indiana, meanwhile, is a surprising 5-3 in league play with three of their five wins coming by four points or less. Under Archie Miller, it's clear the Hoosiers are improving. Since their embarrassing 20-point home loss to Fort Wayne, IU has won and covered six of eight. Illinois put a ton of effort into Monday's game against Michigan State in which they forced 25 turnovers. This is a short turnaround and matching that intensity for 40 minutes could be tricky. But Brad Underwood is an excellent motivator and should have his squad ready to go. Keep in mind, under Underwood, Oklahoma State started Big XII play 0-6 and ripped off 10 of 11. He doesn't have the horses to do that in Champaign but you Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oklahoma State Cowboys at Baylor Bears

Oklahoma State at Baylor -5 O/U 145
Recommendation: Under

Took a contrarian side to victory with the Free Play last week and will do it again here in this Big XII match-up. Subtraction of last season’s Head Coach Brad Underwood has not changed the Cowboys offensive style as they still play a high tempo brand of basketball under new HC Mike Boynton. Their average adjusted tempo has increased in Big XII play from 71 possessions to 74 based on KenPom numbers which is understandable since the league is loaded with up and down style teams. To their credit, OSU has remained an efficient offensive team despite significant personnel losses from last season but the overall number includes more than a half dozen non-conference defensive cupcakes. Games frequently unfold situationally due to styles and what’s interesting here about the Cowboys is how their brand of offense was stoned Saturday by slow tempo-defense oriented Texas. Despite a very respectable 44.8 FG% against the Longhorns who only allow an average of 42%, the game was reduced to a crawl and 65-64 final score.

For the last 3-4 years, Baylor has made a niche Read more

Camping World Betting Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Camping World Bowl - Orlando
Virginia Tech vs. Oklahoma State
Thursday, December 28, 2:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma State -6.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -5 O/U 62
Recommendation: Oklahoma State

There’s been a fair bit of buzz in the betting markets about Oklahoma State’s late season collapse, driving concerns about the Cowboys mentality as they face Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl. For a team that had Playoff aspirations, a December 28 bowl game may not push the appropriate motivational buttons for Mike Gundy’s squad.

That being said. Oklahoma State DIDN’T collapse down the stretch, winning two out of three after their loss to Oklahoma, including a solid road win at bowl bound Iowa State. They didn’t cover a pointspread in those three ballgames, but that certainly wasn’t unusual for a team that spent most of the season as an overvalued commodity, just 2-6-1 ATS following their 3-0 start.

The Cowboys strength, all season, was their dynamic passing game. Senior QB Mason Read more

Birmingham Bowl Betting Preview: Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. South Florida Bulls

Birmingham Bowl
Texas Tech vs. South Florida
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: South Florida -2 O/U 64.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -3 O/U 65.5
Recommendation: South Florida

On paper, there looks to be plenty of potential for points in the Birmingham Bowl with a pair of squads that rank in the top 30 in both ppg and ypg. However, with a 90% chance of rain expected, conditions could impact the amount of offense that is produced. Defensively, Texas Tech made strides this season. After allowing over 7 ypp in 2016, the Red Raiders shaved off nearly 1.5 ypp. That tied into a massive 11.7 ppg allowed improvement. But this defense still had problems, particularly against upper-tier offenses. Arizona State, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma averaged over 45 ppg against the Red Raiders. In the end, TTU’s stop unit, while no longer horrific, is still well below average. You could certainly make a case that USF is on par with those four aforementioned offenses. The key for the Bulls is balance and they have that in spades with Read more

College Football Handicapping: Utah's Huntley on track to start vs. West Virginia

12.15.2017     09:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When healthy, Utah's Tyler Huntley is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. However, due to his smaller stature (6-1, 190 lbs.) and fearlessness, he's prone to injury. After missing two games midseason, the Utes tried to bring him back slowly and limit the amount of risky plays. But Huntley's rushing attempts ended up increasing each of the next four games. Against Washington, he had a season-high 25 attempts which resulted in him missing the regular season finale due to an "undisclosed injury." Backup Troy Williams was serviceable and so was Huntley at less than 100 percent, but the Utes' offense really hummed when the playbook was open and Huntley was allowed to run wild. According to reports, the sophomore quarterback appears on track to start vs. West Virginia in the Heart of Dallas Bowl (Dec. 26). The Utes were bet up from an opener of -4.5 to -7.

“I expect to start in the bowl game. I felt pretty good,” Huntley said. “Today was

Big XII Championship
TCU vs. Oklahoma - Arlington, Texas
Saturday, 9:30 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma -7 O/U 61.5
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -7 O/U 63.5
Recommendation: TCU

The inaugural Big XII Championship pits together two teams that are playing their best football of the year in recent weeks. Since losing at home to Iowa State as -31 chalk, Oklahoma has ripped off seven straight and covered four of its five. TCU’s only two blemishes came against Iowa State and Saturday’s opponent, Oklahoma. Three weeks ago, as -6 home chalk, the Sooners beat the Horned Frogs, 38-20.

In terms of the ability to adjust not only game-to-game, but half-to-half, few are as good as TCU’s Gary Patterson. After falling behind to Oklahoma 38-14 at half, the Horned Frogs pitched a shutout in the second half. Amazingly, TCU has allowed a grand total of six points in the second half of its last seven games. And prior to that loss, the series had been ultra competitive with margins of 7, 6, 4, 3, and 1. Statistically, it's impressive what Oklahoma Read more

Texas Tech at West Virginia
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener: West Virginia -6 O/U 80
CRIS Current: West Virginia -3.5 O/U 72
Recommendation: Over

West Virginia's offense has had no trouble moving the football this season. Yes, they benefitted from a three-game swatch of East Carolina, Delaware State, and Kansas but they also faced Virginia Tech and TCU away from home. Against the Hokies, WVU rolled up 592 yards and topped the 500-yard mark against the Horned Frogs as well. The Mountaineers ran into some difficulty in the red zone which resulted in only 48 points combined in both contests but the yardage was actually conducive to around 75 points.

Through five games, Texas Tech's defense has actually been somewhat of a strength as it has allowed a modest 5.5 yards per play. But those numbers are buoyed by games against FCS Eastern Washington, Houston, and Kansas. Arizona State hung 45 on the Red Raiders and Oklahoma State just missed the 600-yard mark in its 41-34 win. West Virginia is also the most balanced team Tech has faced and the only squad to rank Read more

Texas Tech at Kansas
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener: Texas Tech -17 O/U 77
CRIS Current: Texas Tech -16 O/U 79
Recommendation: Kansas

Two weeks ago, Kansas played arguably its best game of the season. Trailing early to West Virginia, the Jayhawks battled back and were within one score midway through the fourth quarter before two turnovers let to two Mountaineer scores and a somewhat deceiving 56-34 final. Kansas still covered the number (+23.5) giving them five straight Big XII pointspread wins dating back to last season but I'm far more interested in what they were able to do on the ground. There was a lot of preseason talk about Kansas going to more of an "Air Raid" style offense but they simply don't have to personnel, particularly at the quarterback position, to chuck the ball around 50 times a game and have success. Against WVU, Kansas ran the ball 50 times and finished with 367 yards on 7.3 ypc. This against a team that coming in was allowing 4.4 ypc. Don't expect that type of success on a weekly basis but keeping the ball on the ground, especially in Read more
