Proposed Las Vegas stadium an ideal fit for NFL games/team

01.17.2013     06:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So Las Vegas wants to build some sort of "Mega Events Center" similar to that of Cowboys Stadium. If built, said facility would obviously have the capabilities to host football games. What's funny is that those backing the plan aren't asking the NFL to do something logical like pull the plug on Jacksonville or go the expansion route. Instead, they're starting small, like playing host to a preseason game, or the pro bowl. If that works and Bill Belichick and Tom Brady aren’t involved in some elaborate point shaving scandal, then maybe the NFL would warm up to the idea of placing  a franchise in Sin City. The odds on that happening? Not good, according to some.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: AFC Championship News and Quotes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re down to the Final Four in the NFL Playoffs, with two compelling championship game matchups set for next Sunday. I’ve spent all year writing about these teams using my own words. This week, I thought it would make an interesting read to focus on the numerous quotes offered by various players and coaches. Who’s saying what heading into the biggest games of the season? In Part II, we take a look at the AFC Championship with New England a 9-point favorite vs. Baltimore. Click here for the NFC.

New England Patriots – All the Patriots quotes come straight out of ‘Coach Speak 101’ – New England is not a great team for publicizing what’s going on internally, and they certainly won’t say anything to give their opponent any sort of motivational edge.  That being said, there was legitimate concern on the roster following the season ending injury for their top red zone threat, tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: Looking at the contenders in the AFC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I spent the last few Sunday’s concentrating on some pretty bad football teams. It’s December now; time to shift my focus towards the other end of the spectrum. This week, I focused on four AFC Playoff contenders. Which teams have the potential to do some damage when January rolls around and which are frauds? Read on to find out!

Indianapolis - Indy is certainly not a Super Bowl contender. But given that they were seven point underdogs at 4-7 Detroit, the betting markets aren’t even calling the Colts a playoff caliber team. Even with starting cornerback Vontae Davis back in the lineup following a four game injury absence, the pass defense spent all afternoon getting torched. Where's the pass rush? Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis were non-factors here.

The offensive line got dominated by Detroit’s front four for most of the afternoon. Andrew Luck was beaten up, taking one big hit after the next. Coming into the game with four fumbles and 10 INTs in five previous road games, Luck's emphasis was on ball security here. That emphasis didn’t work. He hit seven different receivers in the first half, but also threw a pair Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots

Buffalo at New England
Alf Musketa's Recommendation:
New England
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
New England -12 O/U 52
CRIS Current: New England -11 O/U 52
Rob Veno Power Rating: New England -11

Despite the fact that New England did not cover either game as a double-digit home favorite earlier this year (vs. Arizona -13 and NY Jets -11) we are still going to recommend the Patriots in this spot.

New England has owned the Buffalo Bills having won 22 of the past 24 games. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is 22-4 lifetime against Buffalo conversely Bills head coach Chan Gailey is just 1-5 straight up versus New England. These teams met in Week 4 at Buffalo and New England shellacked the Bills 52-28. In that game Ryan Fitzpatrick had four interceptions and the Patriots’ running back duo of Stephan Ridley and Brandon Bolden had a coming out party and both ran for over 100 plus Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: New England Patriots vs. St. Louis Rams

New England vs. St. Louis
Alf Musekta's Recommendation:
New England
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS (London, England)
CRIS Opener:
New England -6.5 O/U 46.5
CRIS Current: New England -7 O/U 46.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: New England -10

This game is being played at Wembley Stadium, in London, England and yes they have a retractable roof. St. Louis originally agreed to a three-year deal from 2012 -14 that they were going to compete in the NFL's U.K. series. The owner of the Rams is Stan Kroenke who also owns local soccer club Arsenal of the English Premier League and the agreement was a natural fit. However, the Rams administration staff and coaching staff convinced their owner that going across the pond every season was not a great idea physically and financially. Thus, the English fans and tabloids have run with this story that the Rams want no part in playing in their country. The Rams are technically the home team in Read more

If the Washington Redskins learned anything after Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, it would be not to allow Eli Manning the chance to have the football with his team trailing by one score in the final minutes. Robert Griffin III had a miraculous scramble play on a fourth down to keep a late fourth quarter drive alive en route to a terrific touchdown throw to Santana Moss which gave the Redskins a brief lead. It didn’t last long as Manning hit Victor Cruz for a 73-yard touchdown pass to give the Giants the win in a back and forth 27-23 affair. Despite the straight up win for New York, Washington got the ATS win and continue to cash tickets for their backers against their NFC East rivals. Washington is now 4-0 ATS against the G-Men dating back to January 2011.

I don’t think the term “right side winner” can be any more accurate than it was with the Houston Texans on Sunday. It was a dominant 43-13 win and easy 6.5-point home chalk cover for the Texans in which they outgained the Baltimore Ravens 420-176, had a huge 27-12 edge in first downs, and a +2 TO margin. Quarterback Joe Flacco and the Baltimore no-huddle offense continues to Read more

I think we know the Oakland Raiders aren’t great but they did play a solid football game and certainly good enough to beat Atlanta. The Raiders outgained the Falcons 474-286 which included 149-45 yard rushing 325-241 yard passing edges. Oakland also nearly doubled Atlanta in time of possession. What was the difference? Oakland failed to capitalize on Atlanta’s turnovers. Atlanta capitalized on Oakland’s turnovers including a huge 79-yard INT touchdown return for by Asante Samuel to give Atlanta a 20-13 – it came when Oakland was driving in Atlanta territory and looking to take the lead. The Falcons stand alone as the only undefeated team in the NFL at 6-0 but it’s becoming clear they have become an overvalued commodity in the betting markets. Atlanta won the game 23-20 but never sniffed a pointspread cover as 9.5-point home favorites. It’s a clear indicator there are no bargains to support the “dirty birds” these days.

Another example of statistical dominance not equaling a straight up win was with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys played arguably their best game of the season and it still feel short against the Ravens. Dallas Read more

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: Recapping NFL Week 4

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Six NFL teams that made the playoffs last year entered Week 4 with a losing record. One of those squads – Pittsburgh – had a bye week. I watched the other five teams closely. Here are my notes from their respective performances.

Denver - Denver spent their previous two games basically defining the term “defensive breakdown”, blowing coverages galore against both the Falcons and Texans. But the stop unit was much better against a lesser foe this week, forcing five three-and-outs on the Raiders’ 10 drives and keeping Oakland out of the end zone on both of their red zone chances.

There was legitimate week-to-week improvement in several areas. First, as a defense, the Broncos weren’t missing many tackles. Secondly, they had a pass rush, getting consistent pressure on Carson Palmer. And perhaps most importantly, the Denver secondary didn’t blow many coverages and assignments, although they still gave up a pair of 30+ yard completions.

I don't understand why this team huddles at all; the offense seems to work Read more

Sunday, 5:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Baltimore -3 (-101) O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Baltimore -3 (+105) O/U 48.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Baltimore -2.5

First of all do not buy into the scuttlebutt that wide reciever Wes Welker is going to be traded, that he is not targeted or getting snaps because the Patriots do not want to give him a long term contract, or that Bill Belichick is making him pay for his holdout. He is simply not in football shape due to the holdout and he will progress with better conditioning. Next, the Patriots came out flat versus Arizona. They were overconfident and the play calling was brutal. Belichick off a loss has been tough to beat. Belichick and Tom Brady are a dangerous combination 11-1 SU and ATS off a loss and getting points. A huge injury is tight end Aaron Hernandez who is out 3-6 weeks with ankle damage and now we Read more

NFL Handicapping: Arizona Cardinals will start Kolb vs. New England

09.13.2012     12:14 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona at New England -13.5 O/U 48.5

The Arizona Cardinals said that Kevin Kolb will start Sunday's game at New England. According to ESPN, this information came from "league sources" and team president Michael Bidwell, not head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Maybe Whisenhunt is trying to do his best Bill Belichick impression or maybe he spotted Kolb's horrific track record on the road (3-6, 64.8 rating, 6 TDs, 10 INTs) and wants to weigh all of his options. The problem is he doesn't have many with John Skelton out because of an ankle injury.
