Little Caesars Bowl - Detroit, Mich.
Wednesday, December 26, 4:30 pm PT - ESPN
Central Michigan vs. Western Kentucky
CRIS Opener:
Western Kentucky -6 O/U 60
CRIS Current: Western Kentucky -5.5 O/U 58.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Western Kentucky -9

In what might be a rare situation this college bowl season we’ve got a game featuring two teams that figure to be “hungry” to partake in the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl. Western Kentucky will be playing in its first ever bowl game while Central Michigan gets a short trip to Detroit which represents its first bowl appearance since 2009.

The stadium certainly won’t be sold out but a decent turnout is expected to add a little flavor here. CMU has a large alumni base in the Detroit area and the short drive for current students and fans should make an attractive destination for a Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Arkansas o-line the key for veteran offense

07.19.2011     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas returns virtually every skill position player from last year's squad but there are some question marks along the offensive line. Last season, the Razorbacks amazingly had the same starting o-line for every game but three of those starters (both tackles) graduated. Head coach Bobby Petrino was recently forced to kick potential starting tackle Anthony Oden (Greg's brother) off of the team after a second DUI. And Seth Oxner, who started every game at center in 2009 but was a back-up last year, left school. Note that one of the keys for the Razorbacks during Petrino's first three seasons was the improvement of the o-line and running game. In 2008, Arkansas averaged only 113.5 ypg on the ground but improved to 131.8 ypg in 2009 and a very respectable 148.9 ypg a season ago.

NCAAF Betting Tips: Low profile, high profits for Louisville Cardinals

Louisville Cardinals
2010: 7-6 SU, 7-6 ATS
Returning Starters: 3 off/6 def

The best profit producing teams in college football do not necessarily correlate with the teams that finish at the top of the standings.  Look no further than last year’s results for a handful of prime example.  The top ten ATS squads for the full season included Hawaii, Arkansas, North Carolina State, Arizona State and Northern Illinois.  None of those teams won their respective conferences, yet all five squads exceeded market expectations by a wide margin.  Other teams that cashed at least two thirds of their tickets in 2010 included San Diego State, Utah, Tulsa, Maryland and Illinois.  Those squads had very similar profiles to the very best ATS teams – good seasons, but not headline inducing, conference winning campaigns.

So my thought process for selecting an NCAA “earner” for the upcoming season has me concentrating on teams poised to make a positive jump Read more

Betting Preview: Arkansas Razorbacks at Auburn Tigers

Arkansas +4 at Auburn O/U 60
Recommendation: Arkansas
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS

Unbeaten Auburn is now the highest ranked SEC team at No. 7 in both major polls while 4-1 Arkansas, the fifth SEC team, sits No. 13. Obviously, this is a huge game for both teams in a crowded SEC West race. Arkansas has won three of the last four meetings, including last year’s 44-23 home victory.

This certainly looks like a game in which both offenses will have the edge over the opposing defenses. Auburn has received great play from transfer quarterback Cam Newton, both throwing and running the ball. His versatility has enabled Auburn to throw for 9.62 yppp and rush for 6.21 ypc through six games. The Tigers have topped 500 yards in three straight games, which enabled them to put up 124 points.

Arkansas also has a great quarterback in Ryan Mallet, and the Hogs do most of their damage with his strong right arm. Arkansas averages 345 ypg passing  at 8.79 yppp while only rushing 20 times Read more

Arkansas desperate for ways to establish run game

10.06.2010     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
Texas A&M vs. Arkansas -6 O/U 62

A couple of quotes from the Arkansas camp discussing the team's desire to establish the run game. Through four games, the Razorbacks rank 103rd nationally with 103 ypg on the ground. They are averaging only 25.5 rushing attempts per game. Last season, they ranked 82nd with 131 ypg and 30.3 attempts per game. In last year's 47-19 win over Texas A&M, Arkansas ran for 163 yards on 5.3 ypc.

"We just have to run the ball more,'' Petrino said. "That's up to me to get us more runs called, to run it more, get into a rhythm and have confidence in it and force the issue.''

"If it was up to me, we'd throw it every down. That's any quarterback,'' said Mallet when asked if the lack of a running back puts additional pressure on him. "But you've got to get a good running game going, Read more

Football Weekend Recap: Big moves in the Betting Market

09.20.2010     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Each Monday here in the Sportsmemo Blog we will go back and analyze last weekend's big market moves and their impact on bettors. See chart below for game listings.

Even bettors who jumped on Maryland +13.5 early were unable to cash their tickets as a late field goal from West Virginia sealed the 14-point win. Mountaineer backers though had to sweat it out as a 28-0 lead quickly evaporated to 11 late in the fourth quarter.

What prompted oddsmakers to throw out an opener of 56.5 on the Tulsa vs. Oklahoma contest will remain a mystery. The Golden Hurricane hadn't showed an ounce of defensive ability and OSU's offense came in with some of the nation's best numbers. Even those with the stones to chase a 13-point line move were rewarded at the Cowboys nearly went over the total themselves with 65 points – some of it running up the score late.

The market felt the fatigue and travel for Hawaii was enough of a reason to pour money in on a suspect Colorado squad. The Buffaloes got off to a slow start Read more

OSU head coach Mike Riley remembers debacle at Louisville

09.16.2010     08:54 AM     Printer Friendly
Louisville at Oregon State -19.5 O/U 52.5

No current Oregon State player was a part of 2005's 63-27 loss to Louisville, but head coach Mike Riley said at a recent press conference that he certainly remembered it.

A closer look at the box score shows Riley has reason to remember. Midway through the third quarter, OSU cut the lead to 42-13 with a field goal. Louisville, who was then coached by Bobby Petrino, scored on a pick six to push the tally to 49-13. But after Oregon State was stopped on downs the following drive, starting quarterback Brian Brohm threw for a 69-yard touchdown pass three plays later. In the fourth quarter, Petrino sent in back-up quarterback Hunter Cantwell, who took the Cardinals on yet another scoring drive which featured three passes including a 32-yard touchdown. That score put the Cardinals up 63-20.

So while Riley claims that once the game starts, revenge becomes an Read more

Betting Preview: Arkansas Razorbacks at Georgia Bulldogs

Arkansas at Georgia -2.5 O/U 54
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN

Heading into this extremely important SEC contest, the NCAA suspension cloud continues to linger over the Bulldogs and their star wide receiver A.J. Green. An appeal is scheduled for this Friday but the ruling may or may not be handed down before Saturday’s 9am PT kickoff. Obviously Georgia would love to have its top playmaker back in the fold but the feeling here is that they’ll still be explosive in this contest.

My optimism stems from the play of freshman quarterback Aaron Murray who was impressive in defeat last week despite what the overall statistics said. Murray , without the services of his Green, against what is arguably the conference’s best cornerback tandem (South Carolina’s Stephon Gilmore and Chris Culliver), and in his first SEC road game, showed poise, leadership, good decision making, accuracy and arm strength. After a subpar first half in which he was let down somewhat Read more

Petrino has reporter canned; Team inconsistent at recent scrimmage

08.17.2010     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Fairway Jay

Apparently Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino isn't in the best of moods. Local reporter Renee Gork was recently fired for wearing a Florida Gators hat to a press conference. When  Gork asked Petrino a question, he responded but said, "And that will be the last question I answer with that hat on." The incident led to "heated discussions" online, which in turn led to Gork's firing. Gork was reportedly a Florida alum.   In other news, there were varying reports on Arkansas' weekend scrimmage. Some said the play was sloppy while others (the school’s official website) claimed the Read more

Illinois Fighting Illini could fly under the radar in 2010

This just might work. In following Illinois head coach Ron Zook throughout his coaching career, we know he brings a great deal of energy to a program. In addition, the guy can flat-out recruit high caliber athletes. Unfortunately, as a head coach his in-game theory is flawed, discipline and accountability are real issues, while playing together as a team is seemingly an afterthought.

Well, big changes were made with this Illinois program during the offseason. In order for Zook to save his job, big name coordinators were brought in to run the show on offense and defense. Paul Petrino was will serve as the offensive coordinator after the same gig under his more famous brother, Bobby, at Arkansas. We definitely know the Petrino system works well at the college level. There are questions as to whether or not the Illini players can catch on to the system and if they have the personnel to run it. There biggest task is ensuring they are a competent quarterback to run the Read more
