Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Indiana takes 1-0 lead over New York

05.06.2013     11:42 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While Game 1 went flying Over the total by 15 points, the truth of the matter is that New York is struggling mightily on the offensive end of the court these days.  They didn’t score more than 90 points in any of their games against the Celtics; the longest streak to start the playoffs since the shot clock came into play in the 1954-55 season.  As a result, since taking a 3-0 series lead against Boston, New York has lost three of their last four in straight up fashion despite being favored in all four games.

Health matters as much or more than any other factor at this time of the year, and the aging Knicks are struggling in that department as well.  Carmelo Anthony’s left shoulder is getting worse, not better after popping out of the socket during the Boston series.  Defensive mainstay Tyson Chandler isn’t anywhere near 100%.  Amare Stoudamire isn’t back in the lineup yet, although he could be before this series is through.  Steve Novak’s balky back is keeping him out of action as well.

New York earned the #2 seed in the East behind Miami because they were a solid defensive team, hit a boatload of three Read more

NBA Playoff Betting Recap: Celtics get hot from three, force Game 6 vs. Knicks

I didn’t get a chance to watch Game Six of Boston/New York Wednesday night. I was following along the commentary on twitter. Sounded like the ultimate gut check performance from the valiant if aging Celtics, and a very lame no-show from the arrogant Knicks who shouldn’t have been talking trash.

Somehow…NOBODY SEEMED TO NOTICE THIS...

Three Pointers: Boston 11/22, New York 5/22

I can only talk about the people I follow…so maybe there were places that made this a big story. But…how can Boston fans watch that game and see guts and glory rather than a team shooting way over its head on treys? The Celtics won scoreboard by two treys…with a boxscore edge of six treys…in a stat they would normally be expected to lose handily.

So…give them credit for showing up, playing hard, and continuing to battle. Just keep this sequence in mind.

NBA Playoff Betting Notes: Boston Celtics try to climb 0-2 mountain

New York at Boston -3 O/U 183.5

Being down 2-0 in a playoff series isn't a death sentence but the odds certainly aren't stacked in your favor. Only 15 teams have ever rallied back after losing the first two games. One of those teams was the Dallas Mavericks who in 2005 dropped back-to-back contests at home to the Rockets but won rallied back to win the series in seven games.

“I guess they say the series hasn’t started -- and I’ve heard this corny line a million times -- until the road team wins,” said Rivers. “I am positive the series has started because we are down 2-0.”

“We lost those first two at home and went in their building and beat them pretty good twice and ended up winning in seven Read more

You regulars are familiar with the KRIB Index that we invented here in the Blog. That’s an acronym for Knicks Re-Invent Basketball, and was based on their amazing ability this year to make treys while avoiding giveaways. I won’t rehash all that because its old news by now. I bring the theme up again because those two categories are looming very large in New York’s current series with Boston.

*New York is much better than Boston from behind the arc, and already enjoys a 16-10 edge in made treys through the first two games of their series. That’s +18 points out of their +23 overall edge on the scoreboard.

*As Steve Kerr was pointing out tonight on the TNT broadcast, Boston has little chance to cash in cheap points off New York turnovers because the Knicks don’t make many. If Boston’s going to lose three’s most every game, they obviously have to make up for that with one’s and two’s if they have any hope of competing in Read more

NBA Betting News: Season Over/Under bets canceled for Celtics and Pacers

04.16.2013     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Due to the unfortunate circumstances of yesterday's Boston Marathon bombing, the Boston Celtics canceled their game against the Indiana Pacers. Both teams had already locked up their respective playoff seeds but for bettors there was still something to play for with Indiana (49-31) right on its regular season over/under wins mark. According to LVH oddsmaker Jeff Sherman, Las Vegas rules indicate that a team must play all 82 regular season games for a season o/u bet to be final. As a result, all wagers on the Celtics and Pacers, both under and over, were canceled.

Jeff Sherman ‏@golfodds 12h
@JPowerline we dislike having this situation arise but going into the season try to come up with the fairest stipulations for both sides

Jeff Sherman ‏@golfodds 13h
@WagerMinds we opened Pacers 51, went as low as 49.5 ... they're sitting at 49 wins so tomorrow's game meant quite a bit to it

Jeff Sherman ‏@golfodds 14h
with the cancellation of tomorrow's Celtics/Pacers game, season wins on those two teams are refunds as team must play 82 games for action

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Miami Heat fit the profile of a champion

04.15.2013     07:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Every year, prior to the end of the regular season, I write a column I call ‘Who Has What it Takes to Win the Big Dance”.  After Louisville’s NCAA Tournament Championship this year, we’ve seen future champions fit a specific statistical profile in 15 of the last 16 tournaments.  As a result of that specific statistical profile, I can simply go through all the contending teams, one by one, to see which squad has the best chance (or one of the best chances) to cut down the nets following six consecutive victories over a three week span.

I do not go through a specific statistical profile that predicts NBA playoff success the same way I do for college.  And while the NCAA Tournament is a relative sprint, the NBA Playoffs are an extended, two month long marathon; a war of attrition as much as anything else.  A race towards a four series, 16 victory championship requires talent and health.

We don’t see longshots winning NBA titles very often.  The biggest surprise teams to win a title in the last two decades – the 2004 Pistons and the 2011 Mavericks – were both deep, veteran, defensive minded Read more

NBA Handicapping: Knicks face Celtics in first round of playoffs

04.15.2013     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York's win over Indiana last night gave the Knicks the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They'll face No. 7 seed Boston in the first round. Two years ago the Celtics swept the Knicks in the postseason. Both teams have two regular season games remaining. JR Smith, Raymond Felton, and Carmelo Anthony have been ruled out for tonight's game against Charlotte. Kenyon Martin and Tyson Chandler are doubtful.

Boston
Tuesday vs. Indiana
Wednesday at Toronto

New York
Monday at Charlotte
Wednesday vs. Atlanta

"We're looking forward to that matchup. We know what type of series it's going to be," Anthony said. "It's going to be a grind out, battle series, tough series, physical series. We're looking forward to that."

NBA Gambling News: Miami's James, Wade, and Bosh expected to play vs. Boston

04.12.2013     01:53 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston at Miami -12.5 O/U 196

Oddsmakers and bettors have had a heck of a time trying to get a read on the Miami Heat and their motivation if any the last two weeks of the regular season. The Big Three have been in and out of the lineup of late but according to reports they are all expected to play in tonight's matchup against Boston – how much they play should remain a concern for those interested in laying the big price. It’s reasonable to think that their playing time will be abbreviated especially if the Heat creates a comfortable lead in the second half. The Celtics won't have the services of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. It looks like Boston is locked into the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference.
