NFLX Handicapping: Bengals go with Dalton, starters could go longer

Cincinnati at Detroit -4.5 O/U 35

Transcript of Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis' press conference from Tuesday. According to Lewis, rookie quarterback Andy Dalton will start on Friday at Detroit though he expects the remaining three signal callers (Bruce Gradkowski, Jordan Palmer, Dan LeFevour) to see some action. He also hinted that due to time constraints, the starters may play slightly longer than normal in order to better prepare for the regular season.

Can you envision all four quarterbacks playing on Friday?
ML: “There is a chance, yes. My plan right now is to play all four quarterbacks.”

How much longer can you see your first unit guys playing in this first preseason game, in comparison to other years?
ML: “A little bit (longer). It’s going to be important for us to let the guys play a little Read more

Oakland at San Diego -13 O/U 44.5

We cashed an easy outright underdog winner on San Diego last Sunday night in their crushing of the Colts, 36-14. Of course, the score was a bit misleading as Indianapolis had five turnovers including a rare poor performance from Peyton Manning, who threw four interceptions.

San Diego (6-5) continues its late season surge as a big home favorite (-13) over their division rival Oakland Raiders (5-6) at Qualcomm Stadium Sunday. The Chargers trail Kansas City by one game in the AFC West and Chiefs may likely have a win over Denver earlier in the day when this one kicks off.

San Diego’s defense is ranked #1 in the NFL, holding opponents to 273 yards per game along with just 4.6 yards per play. We know the public likes to bet hot teams and remembers what they saw recently, and the recent series dominance and revenge factor have inflated this line. Combined with Oakland’s recent poor play the last two games – 33-17 home loss to the Dolphins last Read more

Frank Gore was hurt on San Francisco’s first series and missed the rest of the contest with a fractured hip. Gore is reportedly out for the season.

San Jose State's injury situation is almost comical as they literally limp into the season finale against Idaho.

NFL Handicapping: AFC Betting News and Notes Week 12

Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches the games typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps simply don’t have. This week: AFC tidbits from Week 12.

Bills – Steve Johnson has been a 'coming out of nowhere' fantasy demon; a complete afterthought on the depth chart coming into the season. A seventh round pick in 2008, Johnson entered the campaign with 12 career receptions. But like so many of these talented wideouts who had to work their tails off to get a roster spot, Johnson's work ethic has been the difference. Ryan Fitzpatrick is locked in on Johnson; a duo with tremendous chemistry and some pretty good playmaking ability. But you can't drop the game winning TD pass in OT – his fifth drop of the game -- and expect to be considered an elite level receiver. The Bills are most assuredly a 'character' team. They do not quit and seem to play better when faced with adversity. Today, we saw another Read more

Betting Preview: Oakland Raiders at Arizona Cardinals

Oakland at Arizona -4.5 O/U 39
Recommendation: Under

Arizona’s offense is a mess right now. The Cardinals are breaking in a new QB, Derek Anderson, behind a rebuilt offensive line. They’ve scored 24 points in two games. Anderson has been throwing into traffic, missing open receivers and not hitting guys in stride so they can make plays downfield. There’s clearly no chemistry between the quarterback and his receiving corps. Tim Hightower had an 80-yard TD run against Atlanta last Sunday, but the other dozen running back carries produced just 38 total yards.

Arizona needs to run the football and they spent the offseason working on their running game. After last week’s three turnover performance and with Beanie Wells expected to suit up for the first time all year, look for a steady diet of runs between the tackles from the Cardinals on Sunday. That’s exactly what Under bettors look for. It’s also worth noting that the high flying Kurt Warner led offense from Read more

We are about to enter Week 3 of the regular season and already a quarter of the league had endured some type of switch, injury or pending controversy. Raiders down play QB controversy; Starter named Wednesday

Oakland at Arizona -4 O/U 40

Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable will announce his starting quarterback tomorrow. Last week, Bruce Gradkowski replaced Jason Campbell and helped lead the Raiders to a 16-14 win over St. Louis. According to Cable, there won't be any three-ring circus involving a quarterback controversy.

"There isn't going to be a controversy," he said. "I'll make a good decision, the right decision, and we'll go from there."

"I've heard if you have two running backs, like Michael (Bush) and Darren (McFadden), you have a tandem," the Raiders' head coach said Monday. "But if you have two quarterbacks, it's a controversy."

"We're not going to let it be a negative," Cable said. "We'll do what we think is best for our team. If we need to make a switch again down the road - we're going to need them both, probably need all three of them before the year's over with the way this league is."

Welcome to Teddy Covers' unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all weekend long; typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps simply don’t have. Today: AFC tidbits from Week 2.

Broncos – Even after all these years, Champ Bailey is still a difference maker in the secondary. His goal line interception in the first quarter here was a thing of beauty. Eddie Royal looks like Kyle Orton's go-to receiver and he was quite good here. We also saw rookie WR Demaryius Thomas (Georgia Tech) have a huge impact, a great jump ball target in the red zone. Combined with Brandon Lloyd's play last week in Jacksonville and Jabar Gaffney's deep threat speed, this receiving corps looks just fine without the 138 catches that Tony Scheffler and Brandon Marshall had last year. And let's give Orton some credit – he's decent, solid. No, he'll never be Tom Brady, but he's one heck of a lot better than what some teams are trotting out behind center. Read more

Gradkowski slated to play against 49ers

08.26.2010     08:55 AM     Printer Friendly
Oakland quarterback Bruce Gradkowski is expected to play in Saturday's home contest against San Francisco. Gradkowski has been recovering from ligament tears in both knees. That leaves the Raiders with a formidable trio of Jason Campbell, Kyle Boller and Gradkowski. Oakland will be playing its first home game of the preseason, something that head coach Tom Cable said the team is looking forward to. The Raiders, a 1-point home favorite this weekend, play the 49ers in Week 6 of the regular season. San Fran put up 18 fourth quarter points in last year's 21-20 Week 2 preseason victory.
