NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Maryland Terrapins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia -1 vs. Maryland O/U 138
Recommendation: Under

After spending the first half of the Big XII season playing wild, high scoring, up-tempo affairs, West Virginia's games have since cooled down a bit. Ten of the Mountaineers' first 12 league games had 142 or more possessions. Since then, only one, an overtime game against Kansas that was 59-59 at the end of regulation, topped 140 total possessions. The rest were far more moderate including WVU's 68-62 opening round win over Buffalo. The Bulls don't mind pushing the pace and either does WVU, but because of the close nature of the game, it stay well under the total of 150. Maryland will look to push in transition when given the opportunity, but ultimately, the Terps play at a moderate pace and rely heavily on their defense. Over the last month, nearly every single one of UM's games were slow paced and below 130 points. The only exception was against fast paced, no defense Indiana and that game hit 144 on 128 possessions thanks to 55 free throw attempts. The current side price suggests we'll have a competitive ball game leaving the likelihood of an even slower pace the last five minutes. Let's Read more

College Football Betting News: Baylor's Petty will play vs. Buffalo

Baylor -34 at Buffalo O/U 69.5

Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty will play tonight after missing last week's game with two broken bones in his back. It is a questionable move considering Baylor won last week 70-6 without Petty and are 34-point road favorites tonight vs. Buffalo. The Bears have a bye week upcoming before opening Big XII play at Iowa State.

College Football Gambling Update: Snow and cold temps for Potato Bowl

UPDATE

Buffalo vs. San Diego State pk O/U 53

Last week we blogged about San Diego State's inexperience in cold weather. The Aztecs are currently in Boise and some of the players noted that they are seeing snow for the first time. There is snow in the forecast for Friday and Saturday. Game temps are slated for the high 30's but wind does not expect to be a factor.

“There was quite a bit of snow on the side of the field, and I had three kids tell me, ‘Coach, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen snow,’” Aztecs coach Rocky Long said. “When it gets to be 50, they think

CRIS Opener:
Buffalo -1.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: San Diego State pk O/U 53
Rob Veno's Power Rating: San Diego State -0.5

An interesting MAC vs. Mountain West matchup will take place on the blue turf in Boise when the Buffalo Bulls (8-4) face the San Diego State Aztecs (7-5). Buffalo was a surprise this season jumping from a dismal 4-8 in 2012 to 8-4. This will mark the program’s second-ever bowl appearance – they lost to UConn by 18 in 2009. Buffalo head coach Jeff Quinn’s quote indicates that his team is very excited for this opportunity:

“It's been four years in the making. We talked about setting our goals towards being a football program that has a November and December tradition. And to be invited to a bowl game when we knew there were more bowl eligible Read more

College Football Gambling: San Diego State doesn't have much cold weather experience

Buffalo -2.5 at San Diego State O/U 54

San Diego State talks about its preparation for the likelihood of cold weather at next Saturday's Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. According to one article, SDSU's 27-20 win at Air Force earlier this season was its coldest (49 degrees) game since 2009. Temperatures at last year's Potato Bowl were fairly mild (low 40's/high 30's). The current 10-day forecast (which has little to no accuracy) has game day temps in the high 20's.

College Football Betting Preview: Ohio Bobcats at Buffalo Bulls

Ohio at Buffalo

CRIS Opener:
Buffalo -2.5 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: Buffalo -4 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Buffalo -3
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Buffalo

This is by far the best Bulls team since their eight win season in 2008; the year Buffalo played in its only bowl game.  And make no mistake about it – the Bulls have this game circled on their calendar after losing a frustrating heartbreaker to Ohio U last year; a defeat that sent Buffalo into a major funk.

The Bulls come into this game riding a six game winning streak, their longest since 1959.  Their two losses this year – at Ohio State and at Baylor – are certainly nothing to be ashamed of.  And since those two defeats, QB Joe Licata (9-3 as a starter) has an 11-2 TD-INT ratio, making good decisions with the football finding Alex Neutz and Fred Lee downfield on a consistent Read more

College Football Handicapping: Kent State running on fumes after brutal schedule

10.22.2013     12:26 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buffalo -2 at Kent State O/U 50.5

What a hellacious stretch of games for Kent State with five of their last six on the road and no bye week. The competition of those six games wasn't easy either with LSU and Penn State as well as MAC contenders Ball State and Northern Illinois. To make matters worse, last week was a poorly placed non-conference game in Mobile against South Alabama. And this week's opponent, Buffalo, should be more than rested after three straight cakewalk wins over Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, and UMass.

“I don’t sugar-coat anything,” Haynes said. “It’s been tough for five out of the last six weeks.”

“The one thing you have to [remember] is that these guys also have to go to school,” he

CRIS Opener:
Baylor -10.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: Baylor -17.5 O/U 73.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Baylor -10
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Kansas State

Considering all the time that went into discussing this game in both the forum and podcast, I felt obligated to do this write-up. College football has changed so much over the last few years that profiles like this – WHO is laying WHAT at WHERE?? – no longer gain much attention. It’s the age of sophisticated offenses, sharp power ratings, and betting markets that would rather lay -30 with a dominant team than try to "hope for the best" with and outclassed foe despite the value. You can't accurately power rate what Baylor has done to this point simply because it is such rarified air. We've seen it with Oregon but the Ducks are a proven commodity whereas Baylor is not. College Football Handicapping: Phil Steele's impact on the betting markets

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When it comes to college football, there are a lot of unknowns heading into a season. Most bettors know that Alabama will be good and Florida Atlantic will be bad but in between there are a lot of teams that will be far better or worse than the previous year. To pinpoint those teams we use preseason publications to give us a guideline – returning starters, two-deep, new coaches, last season's stats, etc. And no publication is better at providing that information than Phil Steele. But because Steele's work is bettor friendly, it also has a tendency to impact the betting markets. Steele's reasoning for teams going "up" or "down" is hardly groundbreaking but it’s more often than not sound logic. Bettors read Steele, and if they agree with his assessment of a team, they bet on said team be it Week 1, season over/under wins, or odds to win a division and/or conference.

Out of curiosity, we took the 17 teams that made Steele's Most Improved List and checked out the line moves on their Week 1 games (see chart below). Nearly half of them play FCS opponents which as of today aren't lined. For those who do have lined games, we see that Steele's top Read more
