C-USA Tournament Preview

Top seed Memphis has won six of the last seven conference tournaments but five of those were in the friendly confines of the FedEx Forum. This year's tournament is in Tulsa and the champion will have to win at least three games. Memphis didn't lose a regular season conference game and is obviously headed to the Big Dance regardless of this week's outcome. No. 2 seed Southern Miss is in the at-large discussion but it'll need no less than a title game appearance to be considered. Central Florida would have been the fourth seed but is ineligible for the postseason.

First Round Pick/Darkhorse: Name a team in college basketball that endured more emotional highs and lows than Marshall. You probably could drum up a similar situation but the Thundering Herd have been there and back and then some this season. What we know about this squad is that on any given day they can beat anyone in the league. Despite its 6-10 league record, Marshall swept Central Florida, just beat No. 2 seed Southern Miss (after losing to the Eagles by 56 in late January), and went on the road to Memphis and lost by 1. They have absolutely Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: SMU Mustangs at UAB Blazers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
SMU at UAB -5.5
Recommendation: UAB

UAB got off to a sluggish start to C-USA play in part because six of its first seven games were against the top five teams in the conference. During that span they were overwhelmed at times but towards the end of that stretch we saw some potential as the Blazers beat UTEP and lost to a quality Southern Miss squad by four. Once the schedule got softer, UAB was able to parlay those experiences and pointspread value into a current 5-1 SU/ATS run. Some of that value has worn off but the fact remains, this is a much improved team, playing its best of the season, at home, against a weak opponent.

"If you plan it, I was planning a few more wins earlier in the year," Haase said. "This is the time to be playing the best basketball and that certainly is the case for us. We've been continuing to get better every year."

SMU has been competitive in Larry Brown's first season but they don't have much Read more

Liberty Bowl - Memphis, Tenn.
Monday, December 31, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
Iowa State vs. Tulsa
CRIS Opener:
Iowa State -1 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Iowa State -1.5 O/U 51
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Tulsa -2

Iowa State and Tulsa hook up for a second time this season after the Cyclones prevailed in Ames back in Week 1, 38-23, as 2-point underdogs. Iowa State (6-6, 3-6 Big XII) will be playing in its second consecutive postseason after losing to Rutgers, 27-13, in the Pinstripe Bowl. Tulsa (10-3, 8-1 C-USA) went 10-2 after their season opening loss to Iowa State. They’ve been to back-to-back bowl games –losing to BYU last year, 24-21, as 2.5-point favorites and defeating Hawaii 62-35 in 2010 as 10-point underdogs. Motivation might be a question mark for Iowa State considering they are playing a team they already beat while Tulsa obviously doesn’t want to lose to the same Read more

Armed Forces Bowl - Fort Worth, Texas
Saturday, December 29, 8:45 am PT - ESPN
Air Force vs. Rice
CRIS Opener:
Rice pk O/U 60.5
CRIS Current: Air Force -3 O/U 61
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Air Force -0.5

Rice (6-6, 4-4 C-USA) won five of its last six games, including four in a row, to become bowl eligible for the first time since playing in the 2008 Texas Bowl. It will be the 10th bowl appearance in the school's history. "There's an enthusiasm and pride right now with everybody associated with Rice," coach David Bailiff said. "I've never been more proud of a bunch of young men that stuck together and made this possible. They refused to lose." Rice certainly enters this game with the requisite amount of motivation and enthusiasm to expect a good effort, especially since they’ve been shut out from playing in the postseason the last three years. College Football Handicapping: Ball State QB Wenning expected to start vs. Central Florida

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ball State vs. Central Florida -7.5 O/U 61.5

Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning appears ready to go for tonight's Beef O'Brady Bowl matchup against Central Florida. Wenning missed the team's regular season finale with an ankle injury.

"I anticipate he'll start," Ball State coach Pete Lembo said Thursday. "That doesn't mean that (backup) Kelly Page won't play, but if we kicked off at this minute, Keith would start the game."

"Today it felt good, the best it's felt since the injury," Wenning said Wednesday. "Every day it gets better, and hopefully it keeps progressing. It is what it is, but it feels good. ... With adrenaline, I don't think it's going to be a problem."

New Orleans Bowl Betting Preview: East Carolina Pirates vs. UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns

East Carolina vs. Louisiana-Lafayette
CRIS Opener:
UL-Lafayette -4.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: UL-Lafayette -5 O/U 65.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UL-Lafayette -4.5

UL-Lafayette makes its second straight trip to the New Orleans bowl after defeating San Diego State 32-30 as 6-point underdogs last season. It was a pro Ragin' Cajuns crowd but the Superdome was only about half full and East Carolina should travel much better than the Aztecs. ECU returns to the postseason after finishing 5-7 last year. They were blown out by Maryland, 51-20, in the 2010 Military Bowl.

The turning point for UL-Lafayette was its road win over UL-Monroe. They benefited from the Warhawks losing quarterback Kolton Browning to injury late in the first half, but it was still a significant victory. The following week they nearly Read more

Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Fresno State -11

It was another up and down season for head coach June Jones the SMU Mustangs. They were the perfect definition of mediocre at 6-6 overall and 5-3 in C-USA play. They won back-to-back games only once but by all reports are motivated and excited to be traveling to the island for the Hawaii Bowl to take on the Fresno State. Jones on his team’s postseason berth: "Having been affiliated with this bowl since its inception, I know that it is one of the best bowl experiences in college football. I'm very excited for our players, staff and fans. This is a special experience." SMU has been to three previous bowl games under Jones going 2-1 SU Read more

Ball State vs. Central Florida
CRIS Opener:
Central Florida -7.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Central Florida -7 (-115) O/U 62
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Central Florida -8

There’s an interesting but not uncommon dilemma for Ball State heading into this contest. Some players have openly addressed the very disjointed schedule they’ve been on since their regular season finale against Miami (OH). Final exams, the long layoff between games, sporadic practices, coaches intermittent appearances on campus due to recruiting trips, and talk of hitting the beach are all distractions from Ball State’s normal in-season routine. However, when you get down to the root of the team mindsets for this game it seems pretty clear. This invite is a great post season prize for Ball State and a Read more
