NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Arizona Coyotes at Calgary Flames

Arizona +110 at Calgary O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Arizona

The Calgary Flames snapped an ugly 7-game losing streak by beating Edmonton 3-2 in their last game but they were very lucky to do so. The Flames got out to a early lead because of terrible goaltending by Edmonton netminder Cam Talbot and had to hang on for dear life to win as the Oilers dominated the last two periods especially the third period but just couldn't find a way to tie up that game. Betting against Calgary repeatedly since they were officially eliminated from playoff contention has been a staple of my recent handicapping in the NHL and I will try my chances once again betting against a demoralized and injury riddled Calgary team tonight minus TJ Brodie and Travis Hamonic two key starting defensemen on their blue line as well as forwards Sean Monahan, Matthew Tkachuk and Kris Versteeg. Flames goalie Mike Smith finally played one of his better games in net for Calgary in that win over Edmonton on Saturday night but he's been lacking consistency and the ability to follow up a good start with another one all season long. On the flip side, the full season record Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Vegas Golden Knights at Tampa Bay Lightning

Vegas +145 at Tampa Bay O/U 6
Recommendation: Vegas

The Vegas Golden Knights qualify under a 20-10 67% betting angle over the last two seasons; bet on teams playing their normal scheduling routine against teams playing their first game following the league mandated five-day break which the Tampa Bay Lightning will be doing tonight. However, that is not the sole reason for backing Vegas tonight. Tampa Bay suffered a massive injury in their last game prior to the break against the Calgary Flames when their stalwart defenseman and one of the best in the NHL at his position Victor Hedman left the game with a left knee injury that has sidelined him for 4-6 weeks which opens up a huge void the Lightning are going to have to fill on their blue line. Hedman plays the most minutes of any Lightning defensemen and plays in all situations so his absence is as big as it gets and the fact, Tampa Bay crumbled mentally and physically getting routed by Calgary 5-1 and falling apart in the moments following Hedman’s departure from the game speaks volumes about the impact he makes on this hockey team and their success. Tampa Bay has had Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Minnesota Wild

Calgary at Minnesota -115 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

The Calgary Flames have been mired with consistency problems all season and I expect those to continue tonight as they head to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Wild. Calgary is coming off a nice 3-2 home win against the Anaheim Ducks; their third straight win overall, all of which coming at home. But now they head on the road where they have dropped two straight to San Jose and Anaheim. This should be a strong step up effort spot for Minnesota after they were hammered in a 7-2 road loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. The Wild emphasized playing better defensively and their overall game without the puck in practice heading into this game so I’d expect them to put forth a much improved defensive effort tonight on home ice where the Wild have won four straight games including a pair of wins against really good Western Conference teams like Dallas and Nashville. Minnesota recently got Nino Neiderreiter back from injury and he’s already made a big impact for the Wild scoring three goals in two games since his return. Calgary goaltender Mike Smith is Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Los Angeles Kings

Calgary +125 at Los Angeles O/U 5
Recommendation: Calgary

My clients and I have been the beneficiaries of several winning bets against the Los Angeles Kings in recent weeks and tonight looks like another solid opportunity at an equally solid price. The Kings were officially eliminated from the playoffs last weekend--an utmost disappointing result for what is a veteran laden hockey team well versed in winning and participating in the postseason. Los Angeles is on an 11-16 run and though they are coming off a victory at home against Edmonton, it was probably the Oilers worst game in weeks. Calgary still has something to play for as they look to maintain the top Wildcard position in the Western Conference. Finishing in that position instead means avoiding the conference-leading Chicago Blackhawks in the first round which is something that most teams would try to shoot for. Calgary is off back-to-back losses but have not lost three straight games since late January and they should be a highly motivated squad tonight to snap their mini funk. Los Angeles is out of the playoffs this season because they simply haven’t been good enough Read more

Calgary +120 at Winnipeg O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Winnipeg returns home after a three-game road trip where the club picked up two wins against Tampa Bay and Florida but suffered a giant loss when star rookie Patrik Laine was blindsided in Saturday's 4-3 defeat to Buffalo and is now out indefinitely with a concussion. The 18-year old phenom led the club with 21 goals (3rd NHL) and without both their best forward and top defenseman, Tyler Myers, who is sidelined with an upper-body injury, the rest of the Jets line-up will need to step up in a big way. Calgary just split a home-and-home affair against division rival Vancouver and have now won four of their last six games on the road as well as holding a 5-2 mark in their last seven overall. The Flames have also won five of their last seven meetings with Winnipeg and the Jets are just 2-5 in their last seven home games. It's never easy to come home after a long distance trip, but now that Winnipeg is seriously short handed without their young star, this is a really tough task against a fast and similarly physical Flames unit. At a solid plus price tag, this is a ripe spot to pick Calgary this Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Columbus Blue Jackets

Calgary at Columbus -165 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Columbus -1.5 +180

The Calgary Flames continue their six-game East Coast road trip tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Currently near the bottom of the Pacific Division, the Flames have won three of their last five games after losing six of their previous seven games. Their offensive production has slowed down as of late, scoring two or fewer goals in 10 of their last 12 contests. Winger Johnny Gaudreau is out indefinitely with a broken finger. Before his injury on November 15th, where he scored the Flames only goal on the power-play in a 1-0 win at Minnesota, "Johnny Hockey" was leading the club with five goals and 11 points. Another youngster has been picking up the load for Calgary in Matthew Tkachuk. The 19-year old son of former All-Star Keith Tkachuk, Matthew has five goals and four assists in his first 17 games. Columbus has been playing some very strong hockey at the moment, winning eight of its last 11 games. Goaltending and the team’s power play unit have been the catalyst for their recent success. Netminder Sergei Bobrovsky has been electric, winning nine of his last Read more

Calgary at Boston -230 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

My clients and I have cashed a multitude overs involving the Calgary Flames since the All-Star break and that is a trend worth riding tonight as the Flames face the Boston Bruins. This is going to sound like a broken record but Calgary is struggling defensively and its goaltending regardless of whether it is Jonas Hiller or Joni Ortio isn’t at a high enough level to bail them out of their defensive shortcomings. Things are even worse now in terms of goal prevention after trading defenseman Kris Russell at the deadline yesterday. That leaves them without one of their best defensemen who is always in good position, a shot blocking machine, along with being a very strong penalty killer. Calgary has allowed 42 goals in its last 10 games. The Flames also have the suspension to Dennis Wideman in effect and Ladislav Smid is out due to injury -- bad news for an already struggling defensive unit which now has to rely on Deryk Engelland and a lot of youth and inexperience to eat up more minutes. They simply aren't up to the task and have been exposed defensively for a lack of positioning and speed in Read more

Calgary at Philadelphia
Recommendation: Philadelphia -1.5 +180

The Philadelphia Flyers look to earn an important pair of points tonight as they host the Calgary Flames. With 67 points, the Flyers are third in the Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference with 21 games left and just four points behind rival Pittsburgh for that final playoff berth. Philly has earned at least 1 point in seven of its last 10 games and are 3-1-1 in their last five contests at home. Calgary has made some moves before the deadline, most notably trading away veteran Jiri Hudler to the Florida Panthers for a pair of draft picks; a sign that this Pacific Division club that just a year ago was making noise in the postseason, is now rebuilding for the future. Calgary has lost three of its last four games on the road and are 2-7-1 away from home versus Eastern Conference opponents this season. This is a clear cut case of one team looking to make a push into the playoffs against a squad that is looking forward to the offseason. The Flames have failed to cover the puck-line in five of their last seven losses as an underdog, and their defense has allowed 25 or more shots on goal in Read more

My clients and I have cashed a multitude of over-the-total winners involving the Calgary Flames since the All-Star break and that is a trend worth riding tonight as they head west to face the Los Angeles Kings. Calgary is struggling defensively and goalie Jonas Hiller has not been able to hold up since taking over the starting role for injured Karri Ramo. Hiller has allowed 22 goals over his last five starts in net. Flames defenseman Kris Russell is not a household name but he might be one of the more unsung injuries in the league. Russell is a plus defensive player in his own zone, a shot blocking machine, and also a very strong penalty killer. Calgary has allowed 18 goals to Anaheim (twice), Minnesota and Vancouver in its last four games without Russell on the ice as the penalty kill was ripped apart. He is likely to once again be out of the lineup for tonight's game. The Flames also have the suspension to Dennis Wideman in effect and they've lost another blue liner as Ladislav Smid went down with an injury in the loss to Minnesota and he has been placed on IR. That is bad news for an already Read more

Columbus saw its last game against Washington fly over the total with ease in what ended up being a 6-3 final score in the return of the Jackets' top netminder Sergei Bobrovsky. He was obviously very rusty in his first start since returning from a groin injury surrendering five goals (the 6th Washington goal was an empty net tally) on 28 shots. It’s worth noting that Bobrovsky struggled very early in the season before starting to find his form so it could take time for him to be at his best and Calgary’s offense is still fully capable of exploiting struggling defensive squads and questionable goaltending like what we often see with Columbus. On the flip side, Columbus while not being a potent offensive team by any stretch, may be able to score some goals themselves as they put in three goals and fired 35 shots on net against a very strong defensive Washington squad. Calgary doesn’t resemble Washington in that department with the Flames allowing exactly three goals per game ranking them 29th in the NHL. Karri Ramo will be back in between the pipes after a three-game absence due to Read more
