College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma State Cowboys at Texas Longhorns

Oklahoma State at Texas
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma State -1 O/U 62.5
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -3 O/U 63
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Texas

The betting markets seem convinced that Oklahoma State is capable of beating a quality team on the road in the same fashion that the Cowboys have been beating weaklings. After all, Mike Gundy’s squad has won five straight (4-1 ATS) since their embarrassing loss as 19.5-point favorites at West Virginia back in late September.

But both key wins during that span were right team at the right time kind of victories. They beat Kansas State by only four (not covering -12.5) when Bill Snyder was still working to rebuild his squad from their massive graduation losses; a K-State team that has improved by leaps and bounds over the last month since that defeat. The other “signature” win came against Texas Tech when the Red Raiders were Read more

College Football Betting: Kansas may turn to freshman quarterback

10.23.2013     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baylor -34.5 at Kansas O/U 65.5

A week after involving his staff with more of the offensive game plan, Kansas head coach Charlie Weis grasped at yet another straw when he told reporters that freshman quarterback Montell Cozart could see increased playing time. We don't blame Weis as the Jake Heaps experiment took another step back after a 5-of-13, 16 yard performance against Oklahoma.  Perhaps Weis saw the Kansas State-Baylor film where the Wildcats had a lot of success with the direct snap.

“We told them (last) Monday we were going to do this,” Weis said of playing Read more

College Football Handicapping: Kansas' Weis asks for help with offense

Oklahoma -23.5 at Kansas O/U 48

Following offensive outputs of 14, 13, 16, and 17 points, Kansas head coach Charlie Weis said that he's open to any and all ideas from the rest of the coaching staff in terms of coming up with better ways to move the football. Weis had previously been the lone creator of the week-to-week game plan.

"More than coordination, it’s going to be more guys getting to interject ways of how can we improve the offense, how can we score more points," Weis said. "I felt like I had to back off a little bit or we weren’t going to get any better."

"I think what happens a lot times when you have a veteran coach that has been running offenses for a long time … sometimes you hold in ideas because the offensive coordinator already has a bunch of them on their Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Michigan Wolverines

Notre Dame at Michigan
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Michigan -4 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Michigan -3.5 O/U 52
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Michigan -5
Marty Otto's Recommendation: See analysis

Notre Dame and Michigan meet in the Big House on Saturday night with ESPN providing the coverage. This is a rare night game in Ann Arbor and you can be certain a rabid crowd of well over 100,000 fans will be yelling as loud as they can. There has been a little media battle going on about the importance, or significance, of this rivalry; Brian Kelly doesn’t believe it’s that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things that Notre Dame will not be renewing the series for the foreseeable future. Brady Hoke thinks it is a big deal to Michigan and called ND “chickens” for ending the head-to-head plans. It clearly adds just a little more spice to this matchup. Read more

College Football Betting: Former BYU QB Jake Heaps steps in at Kansas

07.23.2013     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After the Dayne Crist experiment failed miserably, second-year head coach Charlie Weis is hoping former BYU quarterback Jake Heaps can kick start the Kansas offense. In two seasons in Provo, Heaps threw for 3,768 yards with 24 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He spent last season with the scout team. The Jayhawks were one of only two teams (UMass) to post a QB rating below 100 in 2012.

“The problem I have, is that was the same thing we went through with Dayne Crist last year,” Weis said. “So Dayne comes walking in the door — and though I do not put the situations the same — one of the problems was, as bad as we were last year … people had this idea that ‘this kid’s gonna be the savior.’ And maybe I’m partially guilty for people feeling that way.”

“I’m not saying I’m trying to lower the expectations,” Weis said. “I expect us to be significantly improved at the quarterback position, which gives us a better chance to compete and win more games in the Read more

College Football Betting: Kansas going with two quarterbacks vs. Oklahoma

10.17.2012     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas at Oklahoma -35 O/U 57.5

When you've lost five straight, have the 97th ranked passing attack, and are a 35-point road underdog, there's no time like the present to get a little creative. Kansas head coach Charlie Weis says he has a few wrinkles for Saturday's game at Oklahoma, including playing two quarterbacks.

“I think that Michael deserves an opportunity to play, based off of his recent performance,” Weis said. “Both of the quarterbacks have been informed that they’re gonna play. They know what we have available to them.”

“I have a whole bunch of things in for this game,” Weis said. “We can’t just go line up and go vanilla and sit there and figure we’re gonna slug it out, and that’s gonna work out to our advantage.”

College Football Betting: Florida offense to look different under former Boise OC

08.07.2012     11:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida enters 2012 with its third different offensive coordinator in three years. Brent Pease, who mostl recently served as Boise State's OC, is set to take over for Charlie Weis (HC Kansas). According to second-year head coach Will Muschamp, there will be some differences with the offense, most notably with formations.

Think lots of motion and shifts and “variations of formation” according to Muschamp.

“From an imagination standpoint, those would be the things that I would see that are going to be drastically different,’’ Muschamp said.

“I do want to complement our players on the retention from spring,’’ Muschamp said. “It was very evident in our first three days on both sides of the ball, which credits our players with the job they did this summer. We are far ahead, after three practices mind you, where we thought we would be at this point on both sides of the ball.

Gator Bowl Betting Preview: Florida Gators vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Gator Bowl
Florida vs. Ohio State
Monday, 10 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener: Florida -1 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Florida -2 O/U 44
Rob Veno Power Rating: Ohio State -3.5

Andrew Lange's Betting Take: A lot more non-football related talk surrounding these two storied but currently mediocre football programs. According to reports, Urban Meyer has kept his distance during Ohio State's preparation – though he officially takes over the program on Tuesday. For Florida, it lost offensive coordinator Charlie Weis (Kansas HC), which in the eyes of some was a good thing.

As for the play on the field, both defenses were above average with the Gators 9th nationally (299.6 ypg allowed) and Ohio State 24th (328.6 ypg allowed). UF's numbers start to look even better when we eliminate games against LSU and Alabama (277.6 ypg allowed, 16.8 ppg allowed). The Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Weis says Florida will expand playbook regardless of QB

Florida -2 at Auburn O/U 49.5

Florida remains mum on its starting quarterback situation but regardless of who plays, offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said that the Gators will need to expand the playbook in order to generate more offense.

“As we’re working through the week, both Jacoby and Jeff Driskel are taking snaps at the quarterback position,” Muschamp said. “We haven’t made a decision here as far as the starter’s concerned. Both guys, we have a lot of confidence in.

“We’re going to open some things up a little bit offensively. We need to do that to help our football team.”

“Obviously, we can’t be Read more
