College Football Betting: Kansas going with two quarterbacks vs. Oklahoma

10.17.2012     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas at Oklahoma -35 O/U 57.5

When you've lost five straight, have the 97th ranked passing attack, and are a 35-point road underdog, there's no time like the present to get a little creative. Kansas head coach Charlie Weis says he has a few wrinkles for Saturday's game at Oklahoma, including playing two quarterbacks.

“I think that Michael deserves an opportunity to play, based off of his recent performance,” Weis said. “Both of the quarterbacks have been informed that they’re gonna play. They know what we have available to them.”

“I have a whole bunch of things in for this game,” Weis said. “We can’t just go line up and go vanilla and sit there and figure we’re gonna slug it out, and that’s gonna work out to our advantage.”

College Football Betting: Florida offense to look different under former Boise OC

08.07.2012     11:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida enters 2012 with its third different offensive coordinator in three years. Brent Pease, who mostl recently served as Boise State's OC, is set to take over for Charlie Weis (HC Kansas). According to second-year head coach Will Muschamp, there will be some differences with the offense, most notably with formations.

Think lots of motion and shifts and “variations of formation” according to Muschamp.

“From an imagination standpoint, those would be the things that I would see that are going to be drastically different,’’ Muschamp said.

“I do want to complement our players on the retention from spring,’’ Muschamp said. “It was very evident in our first three days on both sides of the ball, which credits our players with the job they did this summer. We are far ahead, after three practices mind you, where we thought we would be at this point on both sides of the ball.

Gator Bowl Betting Preview: Florida Gators vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Gator Bowl
Florida vs. Ohio State
Monday, 10 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener: Florida -1 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Florida -2 O/U 44
Rob Veno Power Rating: Ohio State -3.5

Andrew Lange's Betting Take: A lot more non-football related talk surrounding these two storied but currently mediocre football programs. According to reports, Urban Meyer has kept his distance during Ohio State's preparation – though he officially takes over the program on Tuesday. For Florida, it lost offensive coordinator Charlie Weis (Kansas HC), which in the eyes of some was a good thing.

As for the play on the field, both defenses were above average with the Gators 9th nationally (299.6 ypg allowed) and Ohio State 24th (328.6 ypg allowed). UF's numbers start to look even better when we eliminate games against LSU and Alabama (277.6 ypg allowed, 16.8 ppg allowed). The Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Weis says Florida will expand playbook regardless of QB

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida -2 at Auburn O/U 49.5

Florida remains mum on its starting quarterback situation but regardless of who plays, offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said that the Gators will need to expand the playbook in order to generate more offense.

“As we’re working through the week, both Jacoby and Jeff Driskel are taking snaps at the quarterback position,” Muschamp said. “We haven’t made a decision here as far as the starter’s concerned. Both guys, we have a lot of confidence in.

“We’re going to open some things up a little bit offensively. We need to do that to help our football team.”

“Obviously, we can’t be Read more

College Football Gambling: Weis plays coy about Gators starting quarterback

UPDATE

Florida at- LSU- -13.5 O/U 41.5

Earlier this week, Florida head coach Will Muschamp named quarterback Jeff Driskel the starter but according to reports, offensive coordinator Charlie Weis was non-committal. And when the players were asked by the media, they claimed not to know. Sounds as if Weis is trying his best to give LSU something extra to think about.

“Driskel, he has a strong arm and, when things are going bad, he always can get away with his legs and that’s one thing that he can bring to the offense that Johnny B couldn’t,” said receiver Andre Debose. “We have the Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Weis says Florida offense will pull out all the stops

Alabama -3.5 at Florida O/U 45.5

After weeks of playing coy with the media in terms of opening the playbook, Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said he'll be pulling out all of the stops against Alabama this weekend.

"Sometimes when you're playing football, you have to realize that punting isn't necessarily a bad thing," Weis said. "We want to score a touchdown every time we get the ball. But you want to make sure you make good decisions where you don't make that critical mistake and give one to them.

"You play fundamental football and you have to go ahead and throw the kitchen sink at them. They're going to get the kitchen sink.

"You guys have been writing about holding things back. Well, you won't have to worry about that this week. They're going to get plenty."

NCAAF Betting Notes: Florida offensive game plan pays off early

09.20.2011     07:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida -19.5 at Kentucky O/U 43

There seems to be some continuity developing between Florida quarterback John Brantley and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. The two go over the playbook the night before each game and end up scripting the first 12-24 plays of the game. The structure has worked as the Gators have scored on their first drive in all three games and outscored opponents 33-0 in the first quarter. Against Tennessee, Florida's offense gave off a positive vibe for most of the game. They bogged down a couple times in the red zone (four field goals) but Brantley looked much more comfortable compared to last season. The betting markets seem confident in this team as they opened -16.5 Read more

NFL Handicapping: Haley says OC Muir will call plays for Chiefs

Buffalo at Kansas City -6 O/U 40

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley announced yesterday that offensive coordinator Bill Muir will call plays to start the season. It was long speculated the Haley would carry out those duties following the departure of Charlie Weis.

“Bill Muir,” Haley said finally, more than seven months since promoting the longtime coach into the team’s vacancy at offensive coordinator.

“It’s a group contribution of what we like, where we like it, and kind of place that along the call sheet. But ultimately it will fall to Bill to make those decisions.”

“That’s really how you get the final feel, I believe, for calling the Read more

NCAA Football Betting Notes: Brantley eager for offensive change

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
News and notes on Florida from SEC Media Day. The big talk was the change from Urban Meyer's spread offense to Charlie Weis' pro-style system. Quarterback John Brantley never fit in with what Meyer was trying to accomplish but figures to improve under Weis’ watch. He went on to hint that the Gators will be taking more shots down field this year. Amazingly, Florida recorded just one pass play over 50 yards last season -- a 51-yard toss from Brantley to Carl Moore.

"I'm not a runner," the Gators' senior quarterback said Wednesday at SEC Media Days. "I don't like to run. I like to hand the ball off to a fast guy or throw it to a fast guy. I'm all for that. I try not to take too many hits."

"It was new to all of us," senior wide receiver Deonte Thompson said. "We were used to putting up 30, 40 points and it was hard to get 21. It was so new. I wouldn't Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Bettors not too confident in Florida Gators

06.21.2011     01:55 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the biggest questions bettors will be faced with heading into the 2011 season is what to make of the Florida Gators. Last season, after being gutted by the NFL draft (nine picks, six in the first two rounds), the Gators took steps back on both sides of the football (28 ppg, 23.3 ppg allowed in SEC play). The end result was an 8-5 overall mark including 4-4 in SEC play.

Urban Meyer decided it was time to step aside and Florida acted quick with the hiring of former Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Muschamp went the NFL route and hired Charlie Weis (Kansas City OC) to run the offense and Dan Quinn (Seattle DL) to run the defense.

Muschamp knows the SEC having played at Georgia and coached at Auburn and LSU. He was by all accounts the right hire but must hit the ground running and do so with limited resources. Muschamp already made his presence felt when he Read more
