Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Betting on or against NBA bottom feeders

04.08.2013     07:26 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I’ve been writing about college basketball fairly consistently since the Super Bowl.  Now that the calendar has shifted to April, it’s time to shift focus and start writing about the NBA.  With less than ten days remaining in the regular season, most of the prevailing focus is on playoff teams.  That’s why I’m writing this week’s column about the bottom feeders that have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

Can we make money betting on or against these squads down the stretch?  Read on to find out my thoughts on a handful of lottery bound teams before I shift my focus towards playoff squads next week and beyond!  Teams are listed in alphabetical order.

In the 2012 season, the Charlotte Bobcats set a record for NBA futility, finishing the season 7-59 SU.  Their pointspread futility made headlines here in Las Vegas as well, as the Bobcats finished as the single biggest money loser in the league by a wide margin, a woeful 23-43 ATS.

In 2013, the Bobcats didn’t set any records for futility, but they’ve still got the single worst SU record in the Read more

NBA Handicapping: Boston Celtics in tough spot after overtime win over Denver

Boston -3.5 at Charlotte O/U 193

The Boston Celtics are on a roll, winners of seven straight (7-0 ATS) heading into tonight's game at Charlotte. It'll be interesting to see how head coach Doc Rivers handles tonight's minutes after the Celtics beat Denver in overtime last night. Paul Pierce played 54 minutes while Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry logged 42+.

"I’ll let you know after the game [Monday]," Rivers said. "I mean Paul played 54 minutes, and he’s the guy that I’m most concerned with to be honest. And they just played so hard. ... If we have to rest guys, play them shorter minutes tomorrow -- the only way I can do it is by my eyes. You’ll never know how guys feel until [Monday]."

"I told Doc I wasn't build for this s--- and I don't know what the hell he thought," Garnett quipped. "But I Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Houston Rockets at Charlotte Bobcats

Houston -7.5 at Charlotte O/U 208.5
Recommendation: Houston

The Rockets are slumping mightily, losers of seven straight games.  They play at the quickest pace in the NBA, and coinciding with a rough schedule their energy has been sapped.  Six of their seven games on their losing streak have been on the road, while sandwiched around the Clippers.  In all, 13 of their last 18 games have been played on the highway.  Today will finally give them an opportunity to win after their discouraging loss Saturday night against Minnesota.  Of course, the Bobcats are the worst team in the NBA and they’ve continued to struggle covering the number.  Their spread record is under 40%, which is a continued pattern from last season.  The Bobcats are the worst defensive team in the NBA, and the Rockets should garner much easier looks in this game.  Key in this game is the Bobcats sport the second worst three-point defense in the Association.  They allow Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Portland Trail Blazers at Charlotte Bobcats

Portland at Charlotte -1 O/U 192
Recommendation: Charlotte

Charlotte was the worst team in NBA history last year. But a new coach, a rebuilt roster and a handful of early season wins has this team feeling fairly confident these days. The betting markets remember what happened under Paul Silas and his son in 2011-12. The current Bobcats roster has very little connection with that squad, a pointspread bargain in early season play. They’ve already matched last seasons’ win total, and have a winning SU record at home so far.

Kemba Walker is developing into a fine young point guard, reminiscent of his national championship season at UConn, making great decisions with the basketball particularly during crunch time of the fourth quarter. He's a winner, plain and simple. Head coach Mike Dunlap: ''He's setting the culture for us. There's a lot on his plate, but he can handle it." Ramon Sessions and Ben Gordon have provided instant offense on the wing. Rookies Michael Read more

Philadelphia -3.5 at Charlotte O/U 189
Recommendation: Over

After seeing Philadelphia live at Wells Fargo Center Tuesday night versus Dallas, it seems like a good time to step in and look at them from an OVER perspective right now. Offensively, head coach Doug Collins crew operated quicker and much sharper in their sets for the majority of the game. The starting forward tandem of Evan Turner and Thaddeus Young are becoming a handful and figure to be just that for their counterparts Byron Mullens and Michael Kidd-Gichrist tonight. There are other matchups that look exploitable in this game as well. Sixers PG Jrue Holliday fares much better against size than quickness which indicates Bobcats PG Kemba Walker could have a very nice stat line tonight. I like the bench opportunities here too as the Mavericks reserve guards Darren Collison and Vince Carter scored fairly easily when matched with Malik Wayns (Villanova rookie) and Nick Young. That should work here too as Charlotte’s Read more

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota down to nine players vs. Charlotte

11.14.2012     01:26 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Charlotte at Minnesota -7 O/U 183

Due to injuries, the Minnesota Timberwolves are expected to have only nine active players for tonight's game against Charlotte. The T-Wolves opened -8.5 but have been bet down to -7. The total was also hit down from 187 to as low as 182.5.

"They tell me who's going to play, and you coach those people," Adelman said after the Wolves' shootaround practice Wednesday. "I hope we get some guys back on Friday, but I don't want to anticipate that. I might get disappointed."

NBA Betting News: Playoff matchups to be decided on final day of regular season

04.26.2012     05:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last day of the NBA regular season and while the 16 playoff teams have been decided and few scenarios still need to be played out. There appears to be six games (Philadelphia at Detroit, Charlotte at New York, Orlando at Memphis, Denver at Minnesota, Milwaukee at Boston, and Dallas at Atlanta) that have some meaning for at least one team.

Celtics (4) vs. Hawks (5): This matchup has been set for days but who has home court is still not decided. And no, the Celtics don’t get it just because they are the four seed and won the Atlantic — the team with the better record still gets home court advantage. The Hawks have a one-game lead over the Celtics but the Celtics have the tiebreaker. Thursday night Boston needs Atlanta to lose to Dallas and for Boston to beat the Bucks. If either of those games goes the other way the series starts in Atlanta.

New York and Philadelphia are tied for the seven/eight seeds at 35-30, and New York has the tiebreaker. Which means when the Knicks beat the Bobcats Thursday Read more

NBA Betting Notes and Quotes 4-6-2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve offered some notes and quotes from around the NBA.  The end of this hurried and abbreviated regular season is looming – the playoffs start next weekend.  It’s time for a 1500 word tour around the league in an effort to identify some “bet-on” and “bet-against” teams between now and the beginning of the postseason.

The Minnesota Timberwolves enter the stretch run of the season on their longest losing streak since their 15 game skid to close out last year.  Leading scorer and rebounder Kevin Love has no current timetable to return from his lingering concussion.  Point guard Ricky Rubio has been out for months, and his replacement, Luke Ridnour, is dealing with a sprained right ankle that has caused him to miss their last six defeats.

Center Nikola Pekovic made it very clear what Minnesota’s biggest issue is right now: “We need some other players to step up.”  But even with 20+ point efforts from JJ Barea, Michael Beasley and Anthony Randolph last Saturday against Oklahoma City, the T-wolves couldn’t snap their losing Read more

The Charlotte Bobcats are a betting favorite (you read that right)

Washington at Charlotte -1.5 O/U 197

Just in case you were wondering, the Charlotte Bobcats are favored over an NBA team. The previous two times that occurred didn’t work out so well…

1/13: Charlotte -3 vs. Detroit - LOSS 98-81
