NFL Gambling Update: Baker Mayfield now betting favorite to be top draft pick

04.26.2018     10:26 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Despite multiple reports that the Cleveland Browns were far from locked in to Sam Darnold as the first pick, Darnold was priced as high as a -250 favorite as recently as yesterday. But the betting markets have finally changed their tune; no doubt aided by articles like this one on the front page of ESPN. Baker Mayfield, who was around +500 to be the top pick, is now the favorite at -180 according to 5Dimes.

NFL Gambling: Browns considering Baker Mayfield as the first pick

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Cleveland Browns are almost assuredly going to take quarterback with the first pick of Thursday's draft. The favorite is currently USC's Sam Darnold who is currently -210 at 5Dimes. But a report came out today that Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield was also on the Browns' radar. Mayfield is priced at +550.

"The only thing I care about is, do guys win?" Dorsey said. "Does he have accuracy? Does he have a strong arm? Can he throw the ball in the red zone in tight windows? Can he drive the ball? At the end of the game, does he win? That's what I look for."

If Browns general manager John Dorsey is telling the truth, they may in fact draft Mayfield over Darnold. Check out the stats...

Does he win? (Record as starter)
Mayfield: 39-9, .812
Darnold: 21-6, .777

Does he have accuracy? (Career completion %)
Mayfield: 68.5%
Darnod: 64.9%

Does he have a strong arm (Draft combine velocity)
Mayfield: 59 (left), 60 (right) (2nd to Wyoming's Josh Read more

NFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Jets at New England Patriots

NY Jets at New England
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener: New England -16 o/U 46
CRIS Current: New England -14.5 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: New England

Incredibly, the New England Patriots are STILL an undervalued commodity at this stage of the campaign and at this stage of the franchise trajectory. Sure, the Pats won their fifth Super Bowl title in the Brady/Belichick era last February. Sure, the Pats are on pace to snare another #1 seed in the AFC with a victory here — this is most assuredly NOT a meaningless game for the home favorite. If they lose, they probably head to Pittsburgh for the AFC Championship Game, and I’m SURE that’s motivation enough. And yet the markets have been consistently behind New England’s capabilities all season, just like they’ve been in every recent season.

The Patriots went 13-3 ATS last year and covered the spread in all three of their playoff wins as well. This year, following their 4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS start, guess what — the Pats have been the best pointspread team in football. They’re 8-1 Read more

NFL Gambling: Betting market support for the Cleveland Browns continues

12.18.2017     09:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Behold! The line history of the Cleveland Browns! Seemingly every Sportsmemo NFL Opening Line Report podcast segment features commentary on how the winless Browns have "taken early money." That hasn't always been the case this season based on CRIS's opening and closing pointspreads. In fact, the market "bet against" Cleveland six of its first eight games. But since their Week 9 bye, the Browns have been one of the more popular bets in the NFL. And it hasn't been meaningless half point or juice moves either, it's been crossing key numbers "love." But of those six games, only once was Cleveland able to reward its backers. This week, more of the same; the Browns opened +7 at Chicago and were bet down to +6.5.

Week 1 vs. Pittsburgh
CRIS Opener: Cleveland +9.5
CRIS Closer: Cleveland +10
Result: Cleveland ATS Win (21-18)

Week 2 at Baltimore
CRIS Opener: Cleveland +7
CRIS Closer: Cleveland +7.5
Result: Cleveland ATS loss (24-10)

Week 3 at Indianapolis
CRIS Opener: Cleveland -2.5
CRIS Closer: Cleveland pk
Result: Cleveland ATS loss (31-28)

Week 4 vs. Cincinnati
CRIS Opener: Cleveland +4

NFL Gambling Preview: Minnesota Vikings vs. Cleveland Browns

Minnesota vs. Cleveland (London)
Sunday, 6:30 am PT - NFL Network
CRIS Opener: Minnesota -7.5 O/U 38
CRIS Current: Minnesota -9.5 O/U 38
Recommendation: Minnesota

I’ve been impressed by Mike Zimmer and the Vikings coaching staff since they arrived in Minnesota four years ago. And the way the Vikings braintrust is approaching their trip to London this week shows exactly why this particular group of coaches and management continues to impress.

Here’s the quote from Zimmer: ‘We’re going to try something a little bit different than most of the other teams. I’ll either look smart or I’ll look dumb. We’re going to get there a day early. We’ve had sleep people come talk to us; you know we’re getting the whole gamut. I was looking into all the scientific things for this.”

Those ‘scientific things’ include limiting caffeine, using special glasses to look at their smartphones while minimizing light intake, eating a heavy meal the first night in London, and a long, detailed practice Read more

NFL Gambling Update: Cleveland's Kizer back as starter

10.20.2017     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Well, that was quick. No sooner did Cleveland rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer hit the pine, he's now back as the starter. Kevin Hogan played well in relief of Kizer against the Jets but looked very Kizer-esque (20-of-37, 3 INTs) in last week's loss to the Texans. Hue Jackson, who last week said Hogan was "best for our team", claims Kizer "is the guy right now." The Browns are +5.5/+6 home underdogs to Tennessee this Sunday.

"I'm not going to say the rest of the season, but I know he's the guy right now,'' said Jackson. "I hope he is. I hope there are no more times we have to take him out and let him reset himself.''

NFL Gambling Alert: Cleveland Browns go with Kevin Hogan vs. Houston

10.11.2017     08:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 0-5 Cleveland Browns announced quarterback Kevin Hogan will start Sunday's game at Houston in place of rookie DeShone Kizer. Hogan caught a lot of flak during his career at Stanford but played all four years, attempted over 1,110 passes, completed 66% of those passes, and posted a solid 75-to-29 TD-to-INT ratio. Meanwhile, Kizer played only two years and was notorious for struggling against better competition. Last season, in seven games against teams with a winning record, Kizer completed only 56% of his passes with a QB Rating of 124.1. Is Hogan the long term solution? Almost assuredly not. But the Browns have been able to move the ball with him under center. Following the announcement, the total was bet up from 44.5 to 47.

"I've made the decision to start Kevin this week," Jackson said in a statement. "We've liked what Kevin has been able to do within our offense when he's been in there and he will ‪start on Sunday because that's what we feel is best for our team at this point in

NFL Gambling Alert: Cleveland Browns name Kizer starting quarterback

08.23.2017     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Cleveland Browns not only named DeShone Kizer the starter for this week's preseason game but also said he'll be under center for the team's Week 1 opener vs. Pittsburgh.

“He has made a lot of progress by investing the time necessary to learn our offense, working hard to improve on his fundamentals while also effectively moving the offense in preseason games,” Jackson said. “Development is so important for a young quarterback, this is the next step he needs to take and he deserves this opportunity. We are very excited about seeing DeShone in the role of starter for this week, as he is certainly positioning himself well to earn the starting job heading into the regular season.”

NFL Preseason Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New Orleans Saints at Cleveland Browns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans +3 at Cleveland O/U 38
Recommendation: New Orleans

Hue Jackson went 0-4 SU and ATS in his lone preseason as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Jackson followed that 0-fer up with an 0-4 SU and ATS mark in his first season with the Browns last year. Much of that was circumstantial – the Browns Week 1 roster last year had more rookies on it than any non-expansion team in NFL history.

But when we’re talking about a major steam line move – this game opened at pick em and is now painted Cleveland -3 with extra vig to support the favorite – that type of track record certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in this bettor! Whatever value their might have been with the Browns at pick em or -1 is long gone now.

Most pointspread decisions -- whether in the NFL Preseason or regular season or playoffs -- are decided after halftime. The mainstream media and the betting markets often play far too much attention to the ‘how much playing time are the starters going to get?’ announcements, as opposed to the ‘who is going to be on the field after halftime?’ Read more
