MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Cleveland Indians at Boston Red Sox

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Masterson) +100 at Boston (Lackey) O/U 9
Recommendation: Cleveland

The Cleveland Indians are one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball right now and it has gone relatively unnoticed by the betting markets. They’ve won six of their last eight games and they've done so with better than expected starting pitching and an offense that can score runs. Cleveland has netted at least 5 runs in 7 of their last 8 games providing plenty of run support for their pitchers including a 12-run outburst in their win against the Red Sox last night. I think they will have a great chance to score more runs tonight against John Lackey. He pitched very well last time out against Minnesota but I still have my doubts about Lackey as he had allowed 5 runs in back-to-back starts prior to his effort vs. the Twins. It's worth noting that Lackey has pitched 7 innings just once in his six starts this season and that is a concern tonight because the Boston bullpen (which has struggled even when Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Boston's Ryan Dempster off 127 pitches, regular rest

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (McAllister) at Boston (Dempster) -140 O/U 9.5

Keep an eye on Boston Ryan Dempster this evening against Cleveland after he tossed 127 pitches in his last last. It was enough of an effort that he threw off of flat ground as oppose to the mound during a recent bullpen session. It marked the second straight outing Dempster was smacked around as his ERA jumped from 2.93 to 4.27.

"Hopefully not," Farrell said. "The game is going to unfold and is going to dictate some of that. He did travel out early today just because of our late arrival tonight. Talking with him, as far as how his arm felt coming out of his last start, he Read more

MLB Betting News: Detroit's Justin Verlander hoping for better results vs. Cleveland

05.22.2013     07:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit (Verlander) -143 at Cleveland (Jimenez) O/U 8

Detroit's Justin Verlander looks to bounce back after his worst start of the season (2.2 IP, 8 ERs vs. Texas). It sounds as if Verlander's main issue has been lack of command. Note that his velocity was way up in his last start as he managed to hit 99 on the gun. The betting markets however remain skeptical with Detroit opening -165/-160 and bet down to as low as -140.

“To me,” said Jones, “in his last two outings it’s just been a matter of locating his fastball. His breaking stuff has been good, his change-up has been good. He just went through a couple different periods where he lost his fastball location.”

“It went alright,” Verlander said of the bullpen work, “I can’t say it was great but it’s never really great until you Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Yankees send rookie Nuno to the hill vs. Cleveland

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Yankees (Nuno) at Cleveland (Bauer) -120 O/U 8.5

New York's Vidal Nuno will make his first-ever MLB start in Game 2 of today's doubleheader against Cleveland. Nuno was drafted in the 48th round back in 2009 and pitched in the Independent League for a brief while. His minor league numbers are pretty strong (426.1 IP, 2.38 ERA, 405 Ks, 81 BBs). He threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen against Houston back on April 29. Here's a good scouting report on the 25-year-old lefty.

Nuno has found a way to make his size and velocity work. He uses a lower 3/4 arm slot that appears to put a large amount of sink on his fastball. At 87-88 miles per hour, the fastball hardly sounds strong, but he can locate it extremely well. His breaking pitches include a curveball and a changeup, both of which have major league players looking like fools Read more

MLB Betting Trends: Oakland looks to avoid sweep vs. Cleveland

05.09.2013     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland (Colon) -125 at Cleveland (Kazmir) O/U 8.5

Interesting situational trend in play for this afternoon's Oakland-Cleveland game. Dating back to 2004, when a road team has lost the first three of a four game series and is favored in the fourth game, the road team is 23-16, 59% (avg. line of -125). The trend has been even better of late (11-6 since 2009). The A's fit the criteria having lost the first three and priced as a -125 favorite this afternoon.

MLB Gambling: Watch one of the worst blown calls of the year

How is this possible? And how pissed off is every bettor who had an Oakland ticket? Our favorite part of the video is not the double/home run however but instead the piece of rotting meat that Cleveland closer Chris Perez decided to serve for dinner. If that is anyone other than 6-1, 195 lbs. Adam Rosales, the ball is floating in Lake Erie.

MLB Handicapping: Oakland's Parker can't find his groove

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland (Parker) at Cleveland (Jimenez) -115 O/U 8.5

Oakland's Jarrod Parker is finding things to be a bit tougher in this his sophomore season. Through six starts, Parker's ERA sits at 7.36 as he enters tonight's matchup vs. Cleveland –a potentially dangerous paring considering lefties are hitting .418/1.107 vs. the young right hander. Parker's numbers indicate that he's been unlucky (.375 BABIP, 65.6% LOB) but he's also struggling with what he can control and that's strikeouts and walks. Last season he averaged 6.95 Ks and 3.35 BBs per nine innings. This year a dismal 5.52 Ks and 4.91 BBs. According to FanGraphs his velocity has been the same as 2012 which suggests better times are on Read more

MLB Handicapping: Halladay looks to maintain good form vs. Cleveland

04.30.2013     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Halladay) -115 at Cleveland (McAllister) O/U 8

Roy Halladay's ERA has been on a steady decline after a rough start to the season. Over his last three outings Halladay has notched a 1.71 ERA and .118 BAA (.120 BABIP). The competition however wasn't very strong. Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Miami all currently rank as below average National League offenses whereas Atlanta and New York, two teams that hit Halladay hard, rank in the upper-half the NL in slugging and OPS. Cleveland ranks second in the American League in slugging (.438) and OPS (.764).

"I think the mental part kind of got blown a little out of proportion," Halladay said. "It's a way of looking at a game. It's not a mental thing. It's how you approach the game. I think coming out of spring training, having short outings, having some poor outings, Read more

Cleveland (McAllister) at Chicago WS (Quintana) -135 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

I’ve never really found a true read on starting pitchers who have their scheduled day to throw altered by one because of a postponement. Handicapping for clients now 21 years, it seems results are random and scattered to the extent that you could back-fit any stance you take on this infrequent situation. In this contest, the early numbers scream a little too loud to ignore as each starting pitcher is off to a fast start and the opposing lineups are currently dismal. The starters, Zach McAllister for the Tribe and Jose Quintana have already dominated these lineups once this season. McAllister sawed through the ChiSox order over 6.1 innings 11 days ago allowing five hits, zero walks and 1 earned run while striking out six in a 9-4 victory. Meanwhile, Jose Quintana who has been brilliant all around thus far put the clamps on Cleveland the previous day throwing seven, one hit innings and posting a 7/0 Read more

Cleveland (Kazmir) -105 at Houston (Humber) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Cleveland

I've watched enough of Philip Humber over the years to know that it's going to be extremely hard for him to have sustained success. When you are right-handed and your average fastball (which is down a tick or two from last season) hovers in the high 80's in becomes very difficult to turn over lineups in the American League. Humber also has a horrible track record vs. Cleveland (22.2 IP, 22 ERs, 8.74 ERA) in part because the Tribe has a ton of lefties and Humber has strong lefty/righty splits: 2013 - vs. L .387, vs. R .122; 2012 - vs. L .400, vs. R .238; 2011 - vs. L .266, vs. R .200. The Tribe hasn’t exactly been ripping the ball of late but this serves as a good opportunity to turn things around.

Cleveland's Scott Kazmir is getting one last chance to prove he can be a MLB pitcher. I've heard less than flattering stuff about Kazmir's off-the-field habits in the past but in reading about his Read more
