College Basketball Betting: Charleston back at full strength vs. Old Dominion

Old Dominion at College of Charleston -8

College of Charleston expects to have two starters back for tonight's game against Old Dominion. Senior point guard Andrew Lawrence (12.4 ppg) and junior forward Trent Wiedeman (11.7 ppg) have both been upgraded to probable.

“Andrew will be back and we are hoping Trent will be back as well. They both mean so much to us. We have played a lot longer without Trent, but to have that other ball handler (Lawrence) is really important to our offense and our spacing.”

Louisville -10 at College of Charleston O/U 129.5
Recommendation: Under

Despite playing at an above average pace, Louisville is far from a great offensive team. On the season they are shooting 30% from three-point range and 65% from the free throw line. When the Cardinals can’t score in transition, the team’s offensive efficiency becomes average at best. College of Charleston used to run under Bobby Cremins but they've adopted a more moderate paced, defensive minded style under former Tulsa head coach Doug Wojcik. The Cougars went on the road and held Baylor to 59 points. St. John's netted a modest 64 while Auburn could manage only 55 against C of C's defense. And while Charleston’s defense has been solid, they too have struggled at times to score. They shot an amazing 9-of-18 from three against Baylor and netted just 63 points. Note that they only attempted 43 field goals, meaning each possession was milked and/or resulted in a turnover. In losses to St. John's and Auburn, Charleston failed to top 39% from the floor. Tonight's opponent sports one of the best defenses in the country. The loss of Gorgui Dieng hurts Louisville on the Read more

College of Charleston at Appalachian State pk
Recommendation: Appalachian State

A lot has occurred with College of Charleston over the last few weeks – so much so that I think its season is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. After starting 9-1, the Cougars dropped four of their last seven, but that was just the start. In a marquee matchup at conference leader Davidson, C of C was blasted 87-69. They followed that up with a road loss to an average Georgia Southern squad and then mysteriously lost back-to-back home games to Furman and Wofford laying -8.5 and -5.5 respectively. Prior to the Wofford game, unknown to everyone outside of the program, head coach Bobby Cremins decided to step away for health reasons. The Cougars managed to rally the troops with a solid road win at bottom feeder Samford but it was Thursday's effort that may be too much to overcome. C of C trailed Elon on the road by 17 at half but rallied back to force double overtime only to lose 99-98. Five players saw 36+ minutes of action including Andrew Lawrence who played the entire 50 minutes. Now they must turn right around and face an Appalachian State squad that Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting: Charleston head coach Bobby Cremins leaves team

College of Charleston -4 at Samford O/U 134

Weird goings on at the College of Charleston has head coach Bobby Cremins missed Saturday's game against Wofford due to health issues. He reportedly wasn't sleeping much and considered quitting but instead has taken a leave of absence. The Cougars started the season 9-1 including wins over Clemson and UMass. They then went to Louisville and nearly beat the Cardinals outright as 18-point underdogs. But since then, the wheels have come off as C of C is currently on a 3-7 slide (2-7 ATS), including four straight losses. They travel to Samford tonight as 4-point favorites.

"I cannot speak for Coach Cremins,” Young said. “We all know him well enough to know that it was an excruciating thought for him. But, hey, listen, health is first. And we all want him around for many years to come. He has to address what he's dealing with right now and that's the way it's got to be.”

George Mason at College of Charleston -3.5 O/U 139
Recommendation: College of Charleston

Laying -2.5 to -4 with home teams can be tricky because in most cases, the two teams involved are evenly matched and the only thing separating them is a sometimes phantom home court advantage. But in this particular matchup, I see the favorite as the legitimately better team while also owning a home court advantage that is real. College of Charleston was not expected to do much this season after losing a host of seniors including all-everything guard Andrew Goudelock. But 12 games into the season it looks as if this year's edition isn't too far removed 2010-11's 26-win squad. And that type of success has been the norm under head coach Bobby Cremins who has produced 22+ win campaigns in four of his five seasons in Charleston and looks headed for a sixth in 2012. The Cougars have no seriously blemishes on their resume with wins over Clemson, UMass and Tennessee. Their two competitive losses to Central Florida and at Louisville are nothing to be ashamed of. The offense has scored one point per possession in every game but two and the only knock that I see is a Read more

NCAA Basketball Handicapping: Tennessee searches for defensive answers

Tennessee at Coll. of Charleston -3.5 144 O/U

Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin has defense on the brain as the Vols try to avoid a fourth straight loss tonight at Charleston. Martin even hinted of some lineup changes in order to get things turned around. Won't be easy against a tough opponent with a strong home court.

"There's nothing better than shutting up opposing teams with your preparation and your focus, and you do that by playing great defense," Martin said.

“We’re definitely looking into it as we speak,’’ Martin said. “You look at every scenario. For us, we have to have a defensive mind-set, and I don’t know if we have that Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Teams stepping up in class for Week 3

You mean we have an actual game this week? Taking a look at college football teams that take a considerable step up in class this week after back-to-back cakewalks to open the season.

Florida -9 vs. Tennessee (UAB, Florida Atlantic) - Are we sure Urban Meyer isn't ghost-coaching this team? The Gators won their first two games by a combined score of 80-3. John Brantley was far from lights out with only one touchdown pass and a pair of interceptions but he did complete 67% of his passes.

Illinois +1 vs. Arizona State (Arkansas State, South Dakota State) - You'd almost wish the Illini got a stiffer test before playing the Sun Devils. Oddsmakers not giving them much respect by opening ASU as a road Read more

NIT Betting Recommendation: Charleston at Wichita State

Charleston +8.5 at Wichita State O/U 142
Recommendation: Charleston

We cashed in on the Cougars in their NIT opener when they rolled to a 94-84 win over Dayton. Charleston followed that up with a solid road win over Cleveland State as a 4-point underdog. Now they travel to Wichita to take on the Shockers from the Missouri Valley Conference.  Both teams are making the most of the NIT after missing out on the NCAA Tournament.

The Shockers are balanced on offense and rely on their strong defense (41% FG) to suffocate and slow opponents. They play at a slower pace, and Charleston will try to push the tempo a bit more, enabling them to get defenders out of position for looks at the basket. Charleston ranked top-6 in the nation in effective field goal percentage and the Cougars have one of the nation’s top scorers in senior guard Andrew Goudelock. He had 39 points in the win over Dayton, and along with fellow senior guard Donavan Monroe, the Cougars are in good hands in the backcourt Read more

Fairway Jay presents his thoughts and insight for tonight’s opening tournament action.

A record 11 teams enter the NCAA Tournament with a win percentage of less than .600. I feel that the NCAA Tournament is at its best with the current format and field, as expanding to 96 teams will bring more modest teams into the Big Dance. Isn’t that what the NIT, CBI and CIT offer? A chance for more teams to play in a postseason tournament, but not the top 20% of teams in the nation?  Reward the best from each conference and the remaining quality teams and keep the NCAA Tournament as is – the greatest sporting event in the world.

We chipped-in a 4-1 day on our College Conference Tournament (CCT) plays Saturday with our top-play Colonial Athletic Conference GOY winner on Hofstra, 72-56.  All four winners covered the spread by at least 6.5 points and our lone loser lost by a bucket. Tons of plays during CCT, and we'll try to chip in more notes, insight and winners for those looking for the green.

Hofstra vs. Old Dominion -8 O/U 122.5
Colonial Conference Semifinals at Richmond Coliseum, Richmond, Va.

We cashed with Hofstra Saturday as the Pride pulled away in the second half to deliver a chip-in birdie. That easy win kept Hofstra undefeated this season against sub .500 conference teams.  Now the Pride must step up against Old Dominion, who beat Hofstra on the Prides home court 75-64. In that contest, ODU out-rebounded Hofstra 48-20 with 17 offensive boards. Hofstra's star senior guard Jenkins was held to 0-4 from the perimeter, and Old Dominion has the length and defensive dominance on the boards to take out Read more
