It took them a while but over the last two weeks the Toronto Blue Jays have started to play up to their preseason expectations. They've won eight of 10 including six of seven against Texas (outscored the Rangers 38-14). NBA Betting Recap: Indiana Pacers even up series (plus MLB notes)

If home court advantage is worth anything, then the Indiana Pacers have been the better team in BOTH of the games played so far in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Now…home court may end up not meaning much of anything in this series when it’s all said and done. The overall median for the playoffs is still at just two points. And, Miami is known for being very strong on the road. We may be looking at a series of virtual coin flips, with neither team being shaken by the opposing crowd. The near equivalent of a best-of-seven on neutral courts.
Miami better HOPE that’s the case. Because Indiana has been GREAT at home in the playoffs! I’m not going to fall into last year’s trap of making assumptions early in this matchup. We’ve talked about this a lot already. Miami teases you, then breaks your heart if you’re rooting for them to lose.

Arizona's Patrick Corbin has been flawless this season with a 1.52 ERA and solid 41-to-17 K-to-BB ratio. He’s a young lefty arm who has seen an uptick in velocity and plays on a quality team that is not overpriced in the betting markets. It would be foolish to think Corbin isn't going to regress some (see 3.91 xFIP) but despite his success the betting markets continue to bet against this kid and as a result his value has remained. He should be north of -125 in this particular matchup yet you can get him for as cheap as -110. Colorado's Jon Garland has thrown three straight games in which he's lasted only five innings and allowed three earned runs. With 26 strikeouts in 46 innings Garland simply isn't able to fool many batters at this point in his career. There are some metrics that suggest the starting pitching matchup is close but the eye test tells me to support the premium lefty arm at a discounted price.

Arizona's Brandon McCarthy has had a rough go of it in his return after getting hit in the head with a line drive late last season. In four starts McCarthy has allowed 36 hits and 17 earned runs while posting only 11 strikeouts. No question he's been a bit on the unlucky side (.391 BABIP, 7.06 ERA vs. 4.13 xFIP) but he simply hasn't shown the type of stuff that can consistently miss bats and/or get people out. Right now, I see McCarthy's ceiling as a 5- or 6-inning, 3 or 4 earned run type of pitcher. Unlike Jorge De La Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin, Juan Nicasio has never come off as a guy who can have prolonged success at the MLB level. In 20.1 innings of work, the righty has allowed 12 runs, 12 walks, and only 12 strikeouts. And there is nothing fluky about his numbers with a .262 BABIP and nearly identical ERA (5.31) and xFIP (5.34). These two pitchers squared off last week in Coors Field with Arizona winning 5-4. There

, handicapper Rob Veno pointed out the incredible run San Francisco was on when Barry Zito is on the hill. Dating back to last season, the Giants have won 15 straight games behind Zito. Some of it had to do with the offense as San Fran averaged exactly six runs per game in those contests. But Zito was pretty damn effective with a combined ERA of 3.17 in 85 innings of work.

San Diego's Edinson Volquez has one redeeming quality – he pitches in Petco Park where on occasion he can be counted on for a quality start. Outside of that, Volquez doesn't offer much upside. He's dealt with mechanical issues for over a year and it's resulted in little to no command. After getting smacked around in his first start Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley was back to the drawing board of trying to get Volquez's mechanics in order. So here we are with a mediocre pitcher struggling with his mechanics and confidence tossing in Coors Field. Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin does has upside so long as he's healthy. And when he's healthy – which he appears to be this season – he's got enough stuff to overcome Coors Field (see: 38 career starts, 4.18 ERA). at Coors Field. One theory is the remarkably hot and dry weather occurring in Denver. Don't tell that to Jeff Francis who
pitched well
last night despite it being the hottest game in Coors Field history. But despite Francis' effort, let’s not let facts get in the way – Colorado's pitching just isn't very good (5.80 ERA at home). Totals at Coors are now 22-13-2 O/U on the season. Oddsmakers have adjusted and we are now routinely seeing games lined 10 or more. Double-digits totals though are a much more modest 9-8 O/U.

Update on the Colorado Rockies and their four-man rotation experiment. Over the last five games, Colorado (2-3) starters have gone 3.2, 5, 6, 4.2 and 2.2 innings respectively with a 7.77 ERA. The bullpen (16 appearances) has yielded much better results; 19.2 innings with a 1.37 ERA.
It has now become officially impossible to bet on the Colorado Rockies
