NFL Handicapper Preview: Buffalo Bills at San Francisco 49ers

Buffalo at San Francisco
Erin Rynning’s Recommendation:
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT – CBS
CRIS Opener:
San Francisco -10 O/U 44
CRIS Current: San Francisco -9.5 O/U 44.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: San Francisco -12

The Bills were embarrassed in a monumental way last Sunday losing at home to the Patriots 52-28.  Yes, the final score was troubling but the context of blowing a two touchdown lead and being outscored 45-7 down the stretch makes matters much worse.  The Bills were expected to be a true playoff contender this season with the addition of the $100 million man, Mario Williams, and the return of Kyle Williams to bolster the defensive line.  Well, at 2-2 this team can still be that contender, but defensively they must improve under new coordinator Dave Wannstedt. In addition, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick must quit throwing the opposition the football.  Making matters Read more

NFL Betting Stock Watch: Buffalo Bills on the rise defensively

Buy the Buffalo Bills – After starting 5-2 last season, the Bills’ offense went into remission, the defense couldn’t stop anyone and they limped to a 1-8 finish. It marked the 12th straight time the team failed to earn a postseason berth – the longest current drought in the NFL. The fast start was keyed by the efficient play of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who in those first seven games posted a solid 15/9 TD-to-INT ratio. That rate however nearly flip-flopped (9/14) the final nine games and rumors circulated that Fitzpatrick was playing with cracked ribs.  It wasn’t the only key injury with DT Kyle Williams, arguably the team’s best defensive player, and RB Fred Jackson, who suffered a broken leg, both missing substantial time.

Heading into 2012, I think there is an excellent opportunity for improvement and it starts on the defensive side of the football. Much maligned for his work as a head coach, Dave Wannstedt steps into a more ideal situation as defensive coordinator. The stop unit will lean on a 4-3 format with extra emphasis on the front four.  The group consists of the aforementioned and now Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers' AFC East Gambling Preview

Buffalo Bills
Starting point:
Last year, Buffalo went 6-10 SU, 6-9-1 ATS and 11-4-1 to the Over. They had a net of -0.2 yards per play (ypp) and +1 TO margin vs. a tougher than average schedule.  The Bills started 5-2 but were decimated with injuries and closed out the season on a dismal 1-8 SU, 2-7 ATS slide.

2012 Issues: This year, the Bills schedule is significantly easier based on the current 2012 Season O/U Win Total numbers.  Buffalo will go from having a tougher than average schedule to having an easier than average slate; one of the biggest differentials from last year to this year in the entire league.

The Bills have a 12-year playoff drought – their last postseason appearance came back in January, 2000 in the Music City Miracle game at Tennessee. They signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to a six year $59 million contract last year, and then proceeded to watch Fitzpatrick lead the NFL with 23 interceptions.  WR Stevie Johnson is their lone proven playmaker, and former #1 pick,  CJ Spiller, has not yet lived up to expectations with only seven TD’s in his first two years in the Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Pitt's Graham and three assistants take new jobs

12.14.2011     12:56 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Maybe Dave Wannstedt wasn't that bad. At least he was loyal...and didn't get arrested. Pitt will be looking for yet another head coach after Todd Graham bailed to Arizona State after just one season. Apparently if you go 6-6 in the Big East, you are a wanted man. The move puts the Panthers in a difficult spot for the Compass Bowl (Jan. 7) with Graham gone and three assistants leaving to join Rich Rodriguez's staff at Arizona. When news of Graham's decision broke, bettors were quick to jump on SMU. Pitt opened -5.5 but are now down to -3 at some offshore shops.

Teddy Covers: Week 8 AFC Betting News and Notes Part I

Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. Today: Part I of AFC Tidbits from Week 8. Part II will be posted tomorrow.

Why is this team being ranked in the Top 5 in many NFL Power Ratings? I'm not seeing a Super Bowl contender here, on either side of the football. Let's start with Joe Flacco, who just doesn't seem have much chemistry with his receivers. This offensive line isn't giving Flacco time to throw downfield – the wide receivers are basically non-factors in this offense right now. Anquan Boldin had a huge second half against his former team, but big games from Boldin have been the exception, not the rule. Defensively, this pass rush is strong, but I've still got all kinds of questions about the Ravens ability to cover receivers downfield when they don't get to the opposing quarterback. Why on earth is an aging plodder like Ricky Williams taking carries from Read more

NCAAF Handicapper Preview: South Florida Bulls at Pittsburgh Panthers

09.28.2011     07:03 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

South Florida at Pittsburgh (Thursday, 5 pm PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opening Line: Pittsburgh pk O/U 51
CRIS Current Line: South Florida -2.5 O/U 52
Rob Veno Power Rating: South Florida -1
Teddy Covers Power Rating: South Florida -4.5

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: Prime opportunity for Pitt to get its season back on track with a Thursday night primetime affair against South Florida. The Panthers have not looked the part thus far; struggling with Todd Graham’s offense and not consistently playing the type of stout defense we saw under Dave Wannstedt. Graham seems pretty baffled that his team is so inept with the ball but unlike West Virginia, who was coming from a spread background, the change in philosophies for Pitt was more than just a few tweaks. After a solid sophomore campaign, quarterback Tino Sunseri has Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Teams stepping up in class for Week 3

You mean we have an actual game this week? Taking a look at college football teams that take a considerable step up in class this week after back-to-back cakewalks to open the season.

Florida -9 vs. Tennessee (UAB, Florida Atlantic) - Are we sure Urban Meyer isn't ghost-coaching this team? The Gators won their first two games by a combined score of 80-3. John Brantley was far from lights out with only one touchdown pass and a pair of interceptions but he did complete 67% of his passes.

Illinois +1 vs. Arizona State (Arkansas State, South Dakota State) - You'd almost wish the Illini got a stiffer test before playing the Sun Devils. Oddsmakers not giving them much respect by opening ASU as a road Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Graham wants Pitt to average over 80 plays per game

Buffalo at Pittsburgh -29.5 O/U 52

We knew Pittsburgh was going to play at a faster pace under first-year head coach Todd Graham but the prediction out of camp is that the Panthers are going to be more than just "up-tempo". Graham was recently quoted as saying he wants the team to average as many as 82 offensive plays per game. To put the number in perspective, Pitt never averaged more than 67.5 under former head coach Dave Wannstedt. Oregon averaged 78.7 last year and Tulsa, who Graham served as head coach, checked in at 77.4.

This radical change in philosophy creates an interesting scenario for Week 1's opener against Buffalo. The Bulls wanted to play fast in head coach Jeff Quinn's first season but simply didn't Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Pitt Panthers to feature up-tempo offense

07.13.2011     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It has been a wild ride for the Pitt Panthers this offseason. After ushering out former coach Dave Wannstedt they brought in Miami Ohio's  Mike Haywood. Haywood lasted all of 16 days into his five year contract after allegations of domestic abuse forced Pitt to cut ties.

Enter Todd Graham from Tulsa who doesn't seem to mind being the "second choice",

"I love being here," he said. "I was very methodical and careful in my job search. I had a great job where I was [Tulsa], and we were in the top 25. I had other opportunities, and I was careful.

"I have worked 24-25 years to get to a place like Pitt. It's the best job I've ever had in my life. I'm very motivated. I love the town. There's a hard-edged fan base, and a great recruiting base. It's not a pro-style town, even though they love their pro teams. It's more of a collegiate style. There's a lot of excitement."

NCAA Football Handicapping: Odds to Win Big East Championship

06.01.2011     02:32 PM     Printer Friendly
West Virginia is your betting favorite to win the Big East at +175. The Mountaineers return 12 starters (4 on defense) and play four of their seven conference games on the road including trips to Cincinnati and South Florida. The Bulls are the surprising second pick at +250. They played well (8-5) at times during Skip Holtz' first season but return only 10 starters. They too play the three home/four road split. Cincinnati (+500) returns a league-high 16 starters including 11 on defense. The Bearcats finished last in points allowed last season (28.0 ppg) but should see a big boost with the amount of experience returning. Pittsburgh goes from ultra-conservative Dave Wannstedt to Tulsa's Todd Graham. The Panthers welcome back 16 starters and play four of their seven Big East games at home.
UConn somehow slipped into the BCS a year ago but will have a tough time returning (hence the +3000 price tag) with Big East Player of the Year Jordan Todman (141.3 ypg rushing) now in the NFL. The Huskies play arguably the three Read more
