NBA Handicapper Free Play: Detroit Pistons at Oklahoma City Thunder

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit at Oklahoma City -14 O/U 211
Recommendation: Over

The Pistons have been the #1 Over team in the NBA all season long; 55-26 (68%) to the Over through their first 81 games.  Against Western Conference foes like the Thunder – teams that tend to play more uptempo than their Eastern Conference counterparts – Detroit has cashed Overs at a 76% clip in their last 30 ballgames.

Recent Pistons defensive efforts can only be described as dismal or non-existent – hence their 8-1 run to the Over in their last nine ballgames.   They’ve allowed 100+ nine times in their last ten games; 110 or more on seven separate occasions during that span.  Toronto – not exactly an uptempo squad – just hung 116 on Detroit in their last game.

OKC is coming off back-to-back sluggish losses against the Pacers and Pelicans, failing to reach the century mark in either ballgame following a streak of 20 games out of their previous 23 Read more

Detroit +6.5 at Cleveland O/U 207
Recommendation: Detroit

I used the Cavs +6.5 as a free play when they travelled to Detroit less than two weeks ago and emerged with a one point SU victory.  In the rematch tonight, once again this pointspread is out of whack with current realities, but this time it’s Detroit offering legitimate value for their supporters.

The Cavs suffered brutal back-to-back losses last weekend; blown out by a Hawks team that they were chasing for the final playoff spot in the East, then knocked off at home in OT by the Bobcats.  While the Cavs remain technically alive for that last berth, they’ll need to win every game while the Hawks and Knicks lose every game; an extremely unlikely proposition.  For a squad with major chemistry issues that haven’t dissipated as the season has progressed, it’s hard to picture a circle-the-wagons level of effort this evening.

Cleveland +6 at Detroit O/U 205
Recommendation: Cleveland

The betting markets have soured on the Cleveland Cavaliers since leading scorer and assist man Kyrie Irving got hurt. The dead Cavs had just pulled off outright upset road wins as big underdogs at Golden State and Phoenix before the injury, but they lost by 22 on the night that Irving went down.

Since that blowout loss to the Clippers, the Cavs have been pointspread machines, reeling off five consecutive pointspread covers as they travel to Detroit tonight.  That stretch includes a pair of outright upsets against the Knicks and Raptors along with a trio of closer than expected losses against elites Houston, Oklahoma City and Miami.

One player’s injury is another player’s opportunity.  While the markets downgraded the Cavs after Irving got hurt, backup point guard Jarrett Jack stepped into the starters roll. And much as he did two years ago in New Orleans, or last year in Golden State, Jack Read more

NBA Handicapping: The Detroit Pistons probably don't even want to make the playoffs

03.11.2014     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It is high comedy watching these awful Eastern Conference teams lose on a nightly basis and yet technically remain in the "playoff hunt." The Detroit Pistons, losers of 10 of their last 12, are one of those squads. Following Sunday's 118-111 loss at Boston, it is abundantly clear that the only way the Pistons – or the Knicks for that matter – get into the postseason is by accident.

Defense is poor, transition defense especially so.  The Pistons are the worst free-throw-shooting team in the NBA, the second-worst 3-point-shooting team, and allow the fourth-most points, 103.8 per game.

"I think it's trust, guys trusting each other, guys willing to sacrifice for one another," he said.  "I think that's the main thing, trust and sacrifice."

"He was preaching every night, like, if we want to be great, we've got to hold each other accountable, if he ain't doing this, he ain't doing that, take him out," Jennings said of Billups.  "That's what he was mostly Read more

NBA Gambling Trends: Historical numbers point towards Detroit Pistons

Detroit at Charlotte -2.5 O/U 201

Found this interesting and profitable NBA betting profile for tonight's Detroit-Charlotte game. The two teams hooked up last night in Detroit, with the Bobcats prevailing, 108-96. In these unique same opponent, back-to-back situations, when the home teams loses the first game they are an impressive 31-13 ATS in the road in the rematch. Note that the average line of the profile was +6.5. The trend suggests that teams who pick up the road win tend to suffer a letdown the following night.

NBA Handicapping: Detroit Pistons use break to create second half game plan

Charlotte at Detroit -4.5 O/U 204

Over the All-Star break Detroit Pistons interim head coach John Loyer hired a new assistant. Loyer also scrambled to "install some new things" as the team prepares for four games in five nights starting this evening vs. Charlotte.

"I told the guys we need it, there's a lot of things we've got to cover, a lot of things we've got to clean up, a lot of things we've got to put in," Loyer said.  "We kind of looked at both sides of the ball -- ways that we can get better shots offensively, and combinations, and ways we can play better defensively, kind of the whole package."

NBA Handicapping: Detroit Pistons fire Maurice Cheeks

02.10.2014     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Detroit Pistons have fired head coach Maurice Cheeks. Assistant John Loyer will serve as interim head coach. There are rumblings the team may go after former Memphis head coach Lionel Hollins at some point. Since the departure of Flip Saunders, the last four Detroit head coach have produced a combined record of 171-273. The Pistons enter tonight's game against San Antonio 21-29 SU, 22-27-1 ATS. As bad as things have been, they are currently a half game out of the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference.

"Our record does not reflect our talent and we simply need a change," Pistons owner Tom Gores said in the team's release. "We have not made the kind of progress that we should have over the first half of the season. This is a young team and we knew there would be growing pains, but we can be patient only as long as there is progress.

"The responsibility does not fall squarely on any one individual, but Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Brooklyn Nets at Detroit Pistons

Brooklyn +1.5 at Detroit O/U 204.5
Recommendation: Brooklyn

The Detroit Pistons certainly qualify for one of the most disappointing teams in the NBA this season after making a splash in the off-season by signing Josh Smith. The Pistons were clearly expected to solidify themselves as a solid Eastern Conference playoff team. However, even in a completely watered down conference, they’re on the outside looking in at the playoffs, while winning less than 40% of their games. While shot selection and efficiency were expected to be sore spots with Brandon Jennings and Smith as key cogs from an offensive usage standpoint, lack of defense has been the main issue. With big bodies Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond and Smith patrolling the paint, their inside resistance should be much better. The Pistons are off another disappointing loss to the Orlando Magic, which included a dustup between head coach Mo Cheeks and guard Will Bynum. Meanwhile, the Nets have turned their season around winning 12 of Read more

NBA Handicapping: Brooklyn keeping it simple defensively

12.18.2013     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit at Brooklyn -5 O/U 196

Winners of four of their last five (5-0 ATS), the Brooklyn Nets are playing halfway decent basketball these days. According to reports, the "dismissal" of assistant Lawrence Frank has led to a more simplified approach on the defensive end of the court.

"I mean, Lawrence was always kind of the defensive guy, so he was talking on defense and he was definitely long-winded when it came to teaching, so I definitely think it's helped," Nets point guard Deron Williams said. "We're a veteran group, we get things pretty easily. So at times when you're just talking and we're not practicing, it gets a little lengthy. But I think J-Kidd does a good job of getting his points across quick and easy and then we move on."

NBA Betting: Detroit Pistons trending OVER the total

12.11.2013     07:41 AM     Otto Sports     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I cashed a ticket on the Detroit Pistons over the total last night (as did a number of the Sportsmemo Handicappers) and it wouldn’t surprise me to continue to see support for Detroit games to go over the total. And there’s a very solid reason; they’re a playing at a much faster pace than their season to date numbers would suggest.

My suspicion is the market views Detroit as a very mediocre offensive team especially when looking at their seasonal numbers. The Pistons rank in the middle of the pack in terms of points per game (16th) and field goal percentage (15th) while posting dreadful numbers from three point range (28th) and from the charity stripe (30th). If we dig a little deeper their advanced offensive efficiency leading up to December actually was a respectable 102.3, on par with the likes of the Pacers, Warriors, T-Wolves and Thunder. But they were playing at an average pace of just 95.37. Since December started we’ve seen a much fast tempo from the Pistons. Their offensive efficiency is still relatively the same at 102.7 but their average pace has jumped all the way up to 100.34 which actually lead the league this month.
