NBA Gambling: Add the Knicks to the list of teams that need to lose

04.15.2015     11:56 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
We know the Heat and 76ers don't want to win. Well, New York should have the same mindset but in typical Knicks fashion, they enter tonight's game on a two-game winning streak. Tonight's opponent, the Detroit Pistons, were bet up from -5.5 to -9.

At 17-64, the Knicks now have leapfrogged Minnesota (16-65) out of the NBA basement, and they still have a chance to tie Philadelphia (18-63) with a win Wednesday night against eliminated Detroit (31-50). The Timberwolves and Sixers also have home finales on Wednesday against Oklahoma City and Miami, respectively.

Detroit at Chicago -9 O/U 197
Recommendation: Chicago

I expect a bounce back effort from the Chicago Bulls following a 95-91 defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. There is a game at Cleveland on deck which is a mild concern but I think you will get the requisite focus and intensity from the home favorite tonight especially after getting worked over by the Pistons 107-91 two weeks ago. It’s a game Tom Thibodeau remembers: "You can't let your guard down in this league," coach Tom Thibodeau said after Chicago blew a 19-point lead and was outscored 54-19 in the final 19 minutes of a 107-91 defeat to the Pistons on March 21. The Pistons deserve credit as they have shown a lot of fight despite being all but eliminated from the playoff race as they currently sit five games out of the eighth and final spot. But Wednesday’s 102-78 loss to Charlotte may have been the “tap out” on the season as this squad looks to be a prime “bet against” target. Detroit is also banged up with backup point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, who performed well in the absence of injured Brandon Jennings, listed as doubtful for Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Betting against the Washington Wizards

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Last week in this space, I highlighted a pair of NBA teams that had all the makings of being strong bet-on squads over the final two months of the regular season.  Those two teams – the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder – combined to go 5-0 SU and 5-0 ATS in their first five games coming out of the All Star break.  I don’t think either one of those squads has even approached their peak yet, still offering tremendous bet-on potential moving forward.  In particular, OKC even without Durant in the lineup is capable of very big things, both SU and ATS.

This week I’m going to look at a single team on the other end of the spectrum – a dead nuts bet-against squad over the final two months of the campaign.  With sincere apologies to the Denver Nuggets, my #1 fade team in the NBA right now is the Washington Wizards.  While Denver is a lottery team that is being priced like a lottery team, Washington is still being priced as a strong playoff contender in the Read more

NBA Handicapping: After shoring up offense, Pistons take step back defensively

02.09.2015     02:13 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Good article on Detroit's recent defensive woes. The Pistons have taken on a number of identities this season. In November, when they couldn't win a game to save their lives, they were primarily a low scoring "under" team. They around mid-December, they decided to pick up the pace and open up the offense. But with that came a decline defensively, particularly of late.

"We've been trying to save their energy, but we didn't use any last night anyway, so we saved it last night, so we should have been able to go today," Van Gundy said after a short practice today. "We needed to get back into some better habits."

"Now over the last 10 games, we're 28th defensively, we're still seventh offensively so we lose (Brandon Jennings to Achilles injury), play 10 games without him, you stay seventh in offensive efficiency, that's pretty good, you should be winning more games, but our defense has dropped off the charts," Van Gundy said. "We got to try to get it back, we haven't had enough practice time.

NBA Handicapping: Knicks get Anthony and Stoudemire back, play Bucks in London

01.15.2015     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Like the NFL, the NBA likes to do the London thing with the New York Knicks taking on the Milwaukee Bucks this afternoon (Noon PT) at the O2 Arena. And the fans are going to be treated to the return of both Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. Riveting stuff. Three of the four regular season games in O2 Arena (20,0000 capacity) went over the total.

NBA Regular Season Games at London's O2 Arena
2013: Brooklyn Nets 127, Atlanta Hawks 110
2013: New York Knicks 102, Detroit Pistons 87
2011: New Jersey Nets 137, Toronto Raptors 136 (3 OT)

Atlanta at Detroit +3
Recommendation: Detroit

Two of the hottest teams in the NBA square off tonight in the Motor City. Atlanta is an incredible 20-2 SU in its last 22 games which has them in first place in the Eastern Conference while Detroit is on a 7-0 streak since getting rid of the disrupter, Josh Smith. My clients and I have cashed five straight winners with the Detroit Pistons who are most assuredly a team to ride at the moment while the betting markets remain slow to adjust to the difference in energy and execution. Detroit has seen a major surge in its offense during that stretch with much better ball movement and more balanced scoring. They are playing more as a team right now and it is a direct correlation to their winning streak. Point guard Brandon Jennings has finally assumed the team leader role for and is currently playing like one averaging 22.8 points in Detroit’s last four games and the Pistons are finally getting their two talented big men Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond to elevate their play as both are averaging double doubles during the winning streak. Atlanta has put together a truly outstanding run as well and they Read more

NBA Handicapping: Detroit Pistons have covered five straight

01.05.2015     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Josh Smith-less Detroit Pistons are on fire having won five straight both straight up and against the spread. The competition however is about to take a significant step up in class. First there's a back-to-back at San Antonio and Dallas and then a three-game-in-four-nights swing against Atlanta, Brooklyn, and at Toronto.

"Now we're into probably our toughest stretch of the year," he said. "There's 11 teams right now playing .600 or better and we play four of them in our next five games, three of them on the road so it's tough, but it also makes a win like today and the last few even more crucial to have and it sends us in there with a little bit of confidence so we will have to raise our game to another level to play San Antonio, Dallas, Atlanta, the teams we have coming up.

"I think our guys are looking forward to the challenge now."

Detroit -2.5 at New York O/U 198
Recommendation: Detroit

It’s no coincidence that the Detroit Pistons have reeled off a three-game winning streak following the departure of Josh Smith. The fact the Pistons decided to simply get rid of him for nothing in return tells you all you need to know about the negative impact he had on the team. Smith took bad shots, didn’t play consistent defense, and has been generally disruptive to any of the team’s internal chemistry. Detroit is 3-0 SU and ATS since that move notching double-digit wins (two of those as underdogs) against Indiana, Cleveland and Orlando. Detroit has seen a major surge in its offense during that stretch with much better ball movement and more balanced scoring. In two of those three wins, the Pistons had six players in their rotation notch double-digits. This quote from Stan Van Gundy stands out as a team with much more locker room harmony: “We've played three really good games. Our spirit in there is outstanding.” The same can’t be said about the spirit of the New York Knicks right now. It has been a dismal campaign for first-year head coach Derek Fisher Read more

NBA Handicapping: Detroit Pistons waive Josh Smith, embrace youth movement

12.22.2014     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
After a 5-23 (8-20 ATS) start, the Detroit Pistons have no choice but to look toward the future. The first step? Getting rid of the riff-raff, even if that means taking a financial gut punch. The team decided to waive offensive black hole Josh Smith who has two years and $26 million left on his contract. Head coach Stan Van Gundy was pretty blunt in saying that the youth movement starts today.

"We are shifting priorities to aggressively develop our younger players while also expanding the roles of other players in the current rotation to improve performance and build for our future. As we expand certain roles, others will be reduced. In fairness to Josh, being a highly versatile 10-year veteran in this league, we feel it's best to give him his freedom to move forward. We have full respect for Josh as a player and a person."

Detroit at Oklahoma City -14 O/U 211
Recommendation: Over

The Pistons have been the #1 Over team in the NBA all season long; 55-26 (68%) to the Over through their first 81 games.  Against Western Conference foes like the Thunder – teams that tend to play more uptempo than their Eastern Conference counterparts – Detroit has cashed Overs at a 76% clip in their last 30 ballgames.

Recent Pistons defensive efforts can only be described as dismal or non-existent – hence their 8-1 run to the Over in their last nine ballgames.   They’ve allowed 100+ nine times in their last ten games; 110 or more on seven separate occasions during that span.  Toronto – not exactly an uptempo squad – just hung 116 on Detroit in their last game.

OKC is coming off back-to-back sluggish losses against the Pacers and Pelicans, failing to reach the century mark in either ballgame following a streak of 20 games out of their previous 23 Read more
