College Football Betting: After two ugly losses, reeling Baylor makes switch at quarterback

09.13.2017     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With losses to Liberty, UTSA, and the Waco High School JV squad to open the season, Baylor will make a switch at quarterback with transfer Anu Solomon being replace by last year's part-time starter, Zach Smith. Smith threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns in Baylor's bowl win over Boise State the team's only win in its last nine tries. How about some +14 at Duke this weekend, bettors?

"We're going to turn to [Smith] and let him do his thing," Rhule said, making the announcement on the Big 12 coaches teleconference.

"These kids have been through a tough stretch ... They've won one of the last nine games," Rhule said. "They're looking for something good to happen."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Duke Blue Devils at Florida State Seminoles

Duke at Florida State -1.5 O/U 159
Recommendation: Florida State

The disparity in depth here is likely to be an issue now that talented but short-handed Duke is without starting center Amile Jefferson. Contrast the six-man double digit minutes rotation of the Blue Devils with that of the 11 Florida State players who average nearly 10+ minutes and the difference becomes extremely visible. After losing to FSU 93-78 this past Saturday, Virginia Tech’ Buzz Williams called the Seminoles’ dozen deep the best team Leonard Hamilton has ever had at Tallahassee.

Duke presents a huge challenge even without Jefferson (team-leading 10.1 rpg and 62.9% FGs) and Mike Krzyzewski. While Jefferson’s absence creates a huge mismatch in the paint against Florida State’s pair of 7-0 centers, Duke’s perimeter players and overall shooting ability make them tough to defend. Aside from their game at Virginia Tech (89-75 loss), Duke’s schedule has been very soft that last month. It will be interesting to see how this team fares in its second ACC road game. Note that Florida State is 7-2 ATS at home this season.

College Football Betting: Bettors with multiple opportunities to fade teams off of emotional games

11.14.2016     09:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you like betting against college football teams off of "big" games, this is the week for you.

Clemson
Last Week: Lost to Pitt, 43-32. Tigers' first loss of the season. Despite loss, still with a chance to reach the playoffs.
This Week: -21.5 at Wake Forest.

Pittsburgh
Last Week: Beat No. 2 Clemson and in the process became bowl eligible.
This Week: -8 vs. Duke. The Blue Devils are off a "big" win of their own as they took down rival North Carolina, 28-27. Bad spot for Pitt but injury-riddled Duke is off three straight games decided by three points or less.

Michigan
Last Week: Lost at Iowa, 14-13.
This Week: -25.5 vs. Indiana. Don't forget regular season finale at Columbus.

Iowa
Last Week: For the third straight game, the Hawkeyes failed to top 250 total yards. No matter, they saved their season with a 14-13 win over Big Blue.
This Week: -10.5 at Illinois.

Washington
Last Week: Lost to USC, 26-13. Talk that a one-loss PAC-12 team would have a difficult time getting into the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies at Duke Blue Devils

Virginia Tech at Duke
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Virginia Tech -12 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: Virginia Tech -10.5 O/U 54
Recommendation: Virginia Tech

Not at all confident that there’s much left in the Duke tank physically or mentally as they head into this game. Last week’s all-out effort in 38-35 loss at Georgia Tech was a brutal and a potentially finalizing blow to the Blue Devils who rallied from a 28-7 halftime deficit to take a 35-31 fourth quarter lead only to lose following a late Yellow Jacket touchdown. Furthering the frustration was the demoralizing loss of top back Jela Duncan whose season-ending leg injury was described by David Cutcliffe as “gut wrenching." Not real sure Duke can get up off the mat here despite the fact that it is a home game and one where a win is much needed since at 3-5, they must have victories in three of their final four games to become bowl eligible.

The other sideline is a bit rosier as Virginia Tech is in high gear right now after Read more

College Football Gambling: Notre Dame parts ways with defensive coordinator

09.27.2016     08:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In keeping with the "house cleaning" theme for today, Notre Dame announced the firing of defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder following Saturday's 38-35 loss to Duke. With a backup quarterback, the Blue Devils waltzed into South Bend and nearly 500 yards. This is the same team that scored a combined 27 points in losses to Wake Forest and Northwestern. The remainder of the Irish's schedule looks daunting from a defensive perspective. This week's foe, Syracuse, is playing at a pace Notre Dame has shown no ability to contain. North Carolina State and Miami haven't played anyone but are putting up points in bunches. Navy and Army aren't ideal for a stop unit that struggles to tackle. And Virginia Tech's up-tempo offense is starting to take hold with 103 points the last two weeks against Boston College and East Carolina.

“When you guys ask me those questions certainly that's not the time or place to get into debates about your coaching staff. I make those decisions clearly

Duke at Notre Dame
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -21.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -20.5 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Under

For the second time in three games, Notre Dame's defense was gashed for big yards and big points. Texas rolled up 50 on the Irish in Week 1 and then Michigan State hung 36 and 6.42 yards per play in last week's 36-28 upset win. Needless to say, most of the media coverage this week has centered around Notre Dame's ongoing defensive struggles that date back to last year. Against their last four power conference opponents (Stanford, Ohio State, Texas, and Michigan State), the Irish have allowed 42 ppg. Last year, the excuse was injuries and lack of depth. This year, it's the secondary with multiple key players out. According to Brian Kelly, the main problem is simply not performing up to snuff.

But the situation this week is far more favorable as Duke comes to town. The Blue Devils managed only 27 points in back-to-back losses to Wake Forest and Northwestern. Freshman quarterback Daniel Jones has been serviceable with 61% completions but he's not Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers at Northwestern Wildcats

Nebraska at Northwestern
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - BTN
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -6 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -7.5 O/U 48
Recommendation: Nebraska

Big Ten gets underway on Saturday as the Northwestern Wildcats host the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Last week, our free play selection cashed as Northwestern picked up its first victory of the season with a 24-13 win over Duke. Tied 7-7 at halftime, the Wildcats finally were able to get their offense going with 17 second half points. They finished with 320 passing yards (8.2 per play) and for the first time all year topped the 400 total yardage barrier. Now they will face a Nebraska squad coming off of a massive 35-32 home win over Oregon. The Huskers used a balance attack of passing and rushing to work over a suspect Ducks’ defense. They also picked up some big plays on special teams, notably De'Mourney Pearson-El's punt return at the end of the first half that led to a TD to help rally back from an initial 20-7 deficit. Oregon didn't help its cause with 13 penalties for 126 yards.

Last year’s meeting saw Northwestern pick up a close 30-28 Read more

Duke at Northwestern
Saturday, 5 pm PT - Big Ten Network
CRIS Opener:
Northwestern -6 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Northwestern -6 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Northwestern

Both clubs enter this contest off bad losses to weak opposition with Duke losing a 24-14 conference decision to Wake Forest and the Wildcats falling to FCS Illinois State 9-7 on a last second field goal. It’s early, but the outcome of this game could go a long ways in determining whether or not either of these teams reach the postseason.

Duke's offense is going through some transitional issues as starting quarterback Thomas Sirk was lost for the year with a torn Achilles and two new offensive lineman try to gel within the rotation. The Blue Devils were held to just 37 rushing yards last game, and in return allowed 239 yards on the ground and three touchdowns to Demon Deacons freshman tailback Cade Carney. Note that last year, Duke held Wake to only 112 yards on the ground. Duke’s rush defense surrendered only 3.61 ypc in 2015 thanks in large part to do-everything hybrid linebacker Jeremy Cash who was arguably the most Read more

Duke at North Carolina -7.5 O/U 162
Recommendation: Over

One of college basketball’s most heated rivalries will tip tonight when No. 20 Duke makes the 10-mile trip along Tobacco Road to face No. 5 North Carolina on ESPN. The Blue Devils have won three straight in the series, but the Tar Heels sit atop this year’s ACC standings. Both teams rank in the top 5 in the nation in offensive efficiency and possess multiple offensive weapons to make this a must see primetime game.

The defending national champion Blue Devils will also look to extend their winning streak to five games and beat the conference-leading Tar Heels for the 11th time in 14 meetings. Duke is 10-3 straight up and 7-6 against the spread in the past 13 games of the series. The past three meetings between the two ACC rivals have all finished over the total. Duke averaged nearly 90 points in winning each of those games. The Blue Devils’ Grayson Allen, who made the buzzer-beating game winning basket against Virginia on Saturday, paces the Blue Devils in minutes (35.3), points (20.6) and assists (3.7) per game. The sophomore is shooting 48.9 percent from the field, Read more
