College Football Betting News: East Carolina fires defensive coordinator

09.12.2017     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last season, East Carolina opened with a 52-7 win over Western Carolina, followed that up with a 33-30 win over NC State, and then lost by only five at South Carolina. Since then, the Pirates have won only once (vs. UConn), with 10 losses coming by 23.5 ppg. Sensing he may be out of a job soon if things don't turn around, Scottie Montgomery did what any head coach would do in this situation: fire a coordinator. Defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson was let go after last week's 56-10 loss to West Virginia. And starting quarterback Thomas Sirk is questionable with concussion symptoms. Surprisingly, there's been a little support for ECU in the markets this week with Virginia Tech bet down from -22 to -20.5 road chalk.

“I know probably much will be made about East Carolina’s start,” Hokies coach Justin Fuente said Monday. “I can tell you they played two really, really quality opponents. I know there are not a lot of people in America running to their ADs

College Football Betting: Reactions abound following Week 1's results

09.05.2017     12:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The biggest obstacle for college football bettors this week is what to make of Week 1's results. A lot of teams looked and performed far different than their preseason expectations. Below is a quick look at those teams that had "abnormal" Week 1 results and how the betting markets reacted.

Oregon - Crushed FCS Southern Utah 77-21. Opened -10 vs. Nebraska and immediately pounded to -14. The Cornhuskers were outgained in their 43-36 win over Arkansas State

Northwestern - Limped past rebuilding Nevada, 31-20. The Wildcats trailed 17-7 at half. This week's opponent, Duke, rolled over FCS NC Central, 60-7. The game opened a pick 'em with Northwestern now favored by -3.5.

East Carolina - No shame in losing to FCS James Madison as the Dukes are currently the top team in the country. But the manner in which the Pirates lost is perhaps alarming: JMU outgained ECU 614-367. ECU's Week 2 opponent, West Virginia, opened -19.5 and is now -24.

North Carolina - Laying -12.5 at home to rebuilding Cal, the Tar Heels lost 35-30. Week 2's foe, Louisville, was bet up from -6.5 to Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Navy Midshipmen at East Carolina Pirates

Navy at East Carolina
Saturday, 1 pm PT - ESPNN
CRIS Opener:
Navy -7 O/U 67.5
CRIS Current: Navy -8 O/U 66
Recommendation: Over

The first thing bettors must look at for teams facing Navy and its triple option attack is their proficiency or lack thereof at stopping the run. In this instance, East Carolina has been abysmal against the ground game all season long. The Pirates are being gashed against the run on a repeated basis allowing 5.1 yards per carry and over 200 rushing yards per game which ranks 91st nationally. Navy rolled up 45 points and 415 yards on the ground when they faced East Carolina last season. In their last three games, Navy has put up 115 points combined against South Florida, Notre Dame and Tulsa and have gained 342 yards on the ground at 5.9 yards per carry clip. ECU’s defense has been on the field for a whopping 169 plays its last two games and this is not the defense with the personnel nor the freshness required to slow down Navy.

On the flip side, East Carolina has potential to put up their share of points in this game as well. The Pirates offense will be led by Read more

East Carolina at Tulsa
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ESPNN
CRIS Opener:
Tulsa -7 O/U 72.5
CRIS Current: Tulsa -9.5 O/U 75.5
Recommendation: Tulsa

This line is getting bet and has now reached Tulsa -9.5/-10 or it would have been on my card. I bet the Golden Hurricanes at -7 and there is still a little value on them at this price. I have made money with Tulsa this year, including last week as a seven-point dog at Memphis; a game they dominated and won 59-30. Tulsa’s only losses this year came at Ohio State and at Houston, a game that was tied with two minutes remaining. Over the past two weeks they have really gotten it going on offense, combining for 109 points and 1,164 total yards of offense. Quarterback Dane Evans has been sharp, with no picks in either game and the running game led by Joe Flanders has gained over 600 yards on the ground. Tulsa should keep the offense rolling against a poor East Carolina defense this week.

ECU is coming off a 41-3 win over UConn which snapped their five-game losing skid. Prior to the good showing on defense against UConn, the Pirates had allowed an average Read more

Cincinnati at Temple
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener:
Temple -8 O/U 53.5
CRIS Current: Temple -7 O/U 53.5
Recommendation: Over

Temple’s offense has come on strong in recent games which has played a pivotal role in its current 5-2 SU, 7-0 ATS streak. Quarterback Phillip Walker can still be prone to turnovers at times but he’s thrown 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions in Temple’s last nine games. Meanwhile, the ground attack, led by running backs Ryquell Armstead and Jahad Thomas, has been productive at 170 ypg and 4.5 ypc. Cincinnati’s defense has been a subpar unit for much of the campaign giving up 5.5 yards per play and they’ve yielded 40+ points to better offensive foes like South Florida and Houston as well as 504 total yards to Purdue. I expect Temple’s offense which has scored 27+ points in seven straight games to have another solid day on the ground and with play action pass against this suspect Cinci defense.

Cincinnati’s offense seemed to get a boost of energy and momentum last week when former starter Gunner Kiel got his first Read more

Central Florida at East Carolina
Saturday, 9 am PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener:
East Carolina -6 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: East Carolina -4 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: Central Florida

UCF went 0-12 last year.  Ten of their losses came by two touchdowns or more, as they should have – George O’Leary’s final season was a complete disaster.  That included a late November 44-7 home loss at the hands of East Carolina.  That was then, this is now.

First-year head coach Scott Frost has made it very clear what he wants to install for the Golden Knights.  The former Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator wants to become “Oregon of the East."  Frost found his starting quarterback two weeks ago when previous starter Justin Holman got hurt.  In two games behind center, frosh McKenzie Milton; a dual threat dynamo against both Maryland and FIU.

Here’s Frost’s quote: “One of the things that drew me to the job is I knew I could run a version of our offense that was practically identical to Oregon's because we Read more

East Carolina at South Carolina
Saturday, 1 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener:
South Carolina -5.5 O/U 50
CRIS Current: South Carolina -3 O/U 50
Recommendation: East Carolina

I have no qualms recommending a bet against South Carolina laying points, especially facing a solid East Carolina team that has notched back-to-back wins to open the season including last week against NC State. It was a quality win considering the fact ECU brought in a new head coach in Scottie Montgomery combined with new coordinators and systems on both sides of the football. There has been a ton of rebuilding due to graduation losses along the offensive line and in various levels of their defense which led me to believe it could take some time for this team to gel. The Pirates however knocked off the Wolfpack 33-30 last week with Minnesota transfer QB Philip Nelson showing he has a solid grasp of this offense. Nelson is completing 81.3% of his passes through two games for 695 yards with 6 TDs and just 1 INT.

South Carolina has played two mediocre offensive teams to begin the season in SEC foes Vanderbilt and Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing the early season MLB betting markets

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Matt Harvey lost again on Sunday, with the Mets priced as high as -280 here in Las Vegas.  Chris Archer leads the majors in strikeouts, while King Felix ranks second as I write this early Monday morning. Their two teams -- Tampa and Seattle -- teams are a combined 0-4 in the four starts from those two aces.   I closed out last week writing about how betting on aces – the guys that advanced metrics really, truly love – has evolved into a negative expectation wager over the last few years.  The quants have emerged as the dominating force in the MLB betting marketplace and there’s no way that I’ve uncovered to beat them at their own game.

So, I’ve been focusing on the opening week of the MLB season with an anti-quant mentality, looking to take advantage of what the betting markets are undervaluing, not overvaluing.  If the markets are too tilted towards starting pitching, that leaves three areas that aren’t appropriately priced, in my opinion – lineups, bullpens and streaks.

There’s already early season action for streak bettors, with the Orioles winning while the Twins and Braves keep Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: East Carolina Pirates at UCF Knights

East Carolina at UCF -4 O/U 139
Recommendation: Under

A few weeks back I wrote up a free play on East Carolina-UCF under 139. Early bettors were able to cash on the under but the game unfortunately landed right on 139 thanks to 51 points the final 10 minutes of the game and a slew of free throws late due to fouls. Prior to that flurry of points, the game was a dead nuts under. At half, UCF led 28-25, and with five minutes to go it was 56-51. These are two under type squads (10-14 O/U combined) with the Knights playing zone and boasting one of the biggest frontcourts in the country and the Pirates also playing zone. Both teams are also mirrors images of one another when it comes to pace (NCAA average) and offensive efficiency (again, NCAA average). The Knights are probably a little better defensively that their numbers suggest. They played two throw-away type games against Stetson and Bethune-Cookman where they traded baskets and everyone got to boost their stats. They also struggled against the high-power offenses of Davidson, Detroit, and SMU. Outside of that, this is a team that has been pretty consistent about holding teams in the 60's. ECU is in Read more

UCF at East Carolina -4 O/U 139
Recommendation: Under

UCF's numbers are a little skewed because they played a handful of wild, high scoring affairs against teams that push the pace and don't play defense (see: Detroit, Stetson, and Davidson). But that's not their identity. Donnie Jones' teams have always been fairly slow and prefer to play zone. Following last week's 67-50 loss to George Washington, Jones had this to say: "I thought when we got in there in the second half that we would slow down, calm down," Jones said. "I thought we had good energy early on, but I think our spirit got broke there a few times when we were struggling to score and when you've got a young basketball team, these guys got to understand that it starts on the defensive end. You have to get stops. That's how you get back into the flow." That's not the quote of a coach who wants his team playing games in the 70's. Like UCF, ECU has played a bunch of "over" teams like Charlotte and UNC Wilmington. They've also played more moderately paced, defensive oriented squads as well (see: Cal, San Diego State, Ark-Little Rock, James Madison) and Read more
