NFL Handicapping: With Bradford out, Rams turn to Shaun Hill

08.25.2014     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Sam Bradford (ACL) out for the season the St. Louis Rams will turn to 34-year-old veteran Shaun Hill who was last seen as a back-up in Detroit. Hill's career QB Rating (85.9) is actually higher than Bradford's (79.3) but Hill last started a regular season game in 2010 and has since attempted only 16 passes.  Through three preseason games, Hill completed 8-of-17 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Austin Davis and Garrett Gilbert are the Rams' remaining quarterbacks. It's obviously a tough division for quarterbacks with Seattle (first), San Francisco (fourth), and Arizona (eighth) all ranked among the league leaders in opposing QB Rating. St. Louis closes out the preseason at Miami. They open the regular season at home vs. Minnesota. Prior to Bradford's injury, the Rams were 6-point favorites.

“Shaun’s our guy,” Fisher told reporters. “We brought him here. He’s got experience. We’ve got all the confidence in the world in him.”

“Shaun has a great feeling for the offense right Read more

College Football Handicapping: Week 15 Injury Report

12.06.2013     11:31 AM     Brian Edwards     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Missouri starting strong safety Duron Singleton is ‘questionable’ for Saturday’s SEC Championship Game against Auburn. Singleton missed last Saturday’s win over Texas A&M with a hip injury.

UL-Lafayette will most likely be without its outstanding quarterback Saturday at South Alabama. Junior Terrance Broadway is ‘doubtful’ against the Jaguars due to a wrist injury. Broadway has a 19-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio, in addition to eight rushing TDs. Redshirt freshman Brooks Haack will most likely get his first career start under center for the Ragin’ Cajuns. He had only appeared at garbage time until playing in the second half of last week’s 31-28 home loss to ULM. Haack has completed 16-of-21 throws for 175 yards and one TD without an interception. Also, UL-Lafayette starting safety Darius Barksdale is ‘questionable’ with a hand injury.

SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert (21-7 TD-INT) has been downgraded to ‘doubtful’ for Saturday’s game vs. UCF due to a sore knee. Without Gilbert last week, the Mustangs lost 34-0 at Houston. It was the first time a team coached by June Jones had Read more

College Football Gambling Alert: SMU's Gilbert ruled out vs. Houston

SMU at Houston -9.5 O/U 64

SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert (knee) has been ruled out for Friday's game at Houston. Redshirt frosh Neal Burcham will get the nod. Burcham completed 9 of 18 passes for 91 yards, 1 TDs and 1 INT in last week's game at South Florida. Prior to that, he hadn't seen the field since Week 3.

Football Handicapping: MAC Totals, SMU, and NFL Correlated Parlays

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Is there any bet in college football right now that is more of a “no brainer” than playing Mid-American Conference games under the total? There have been 22 MAC league games played heading into Saturday’s slate and the under has gone 17-5 for a winning percentage of 77.2%. The only team in this conference that has recorded more over results than under is Eastern Michigan whose horrendous defense (49.7 points allowed vs. MAC) has led them to a 3-0 O/U mark in league play. Akron, Central Michigan, Massachusetts, Miami (Ohio) and Northern Illinois all have yet to record a conference game over the total.

SMU has certainly had their troubles this season. They’re mostly beaten up by detractors for being a poor team but from a totals perspective right now, you have to love them. The staff of offensive “evil geniuses” that has been assembled in Dallas has given “over” backers the gift of five winning tickets in six tries and they are just beginning to hit stride. After struggling behind QB Garrett Gilbert for the majority of their first four games, the “Air Raid/Run & Shoot” combo scheme has cranked out 86 points and Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Rutgers Scarlet Knights at SMU Mustangs

Rutgers at SMU
Saturday, 9 am PT
CRIS Opener:
Rutgers -3
CRIS Current: Rutgers -6.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Rutgers -5.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Rutgers

Each season I typically stumble upon two or three teams that I continually "bet on" or "bet against" regardless of matchup, situation, or number. This may last three of four weeks or the entire season depending on a number of factors – most notably whether or not I am winning. If you've followed these pages we've cashed tickets against the SMU Mustangs each of the last two weeks. There is simply not a lot of like about this squad and I once again see justification in betting against them this week.

This isn't the best of spots for Rutgers but it also isn't the worst. The Scarlet Knights come in off a bye week which should have left plenty of prep time for their AAC opener as well as next Thursday's showdown at Read more

College Football Betting Preview: SMU Mustangs at TCU Horned Frogs

SMU at TCU
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS1
CRIS Opener:
TCU -19.5 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: TCU -19 O/U 51.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: TCU -14.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: TCU

If Texas A&M wanted to, it could have hung 60+ on SMU last weekend. Instead, the Aggies backed off late and won 42-13. This week, I don't think TCU has the ability to score at that type of rate but the Horned Frogs could offset that by putting up more resistance defensively.

TCU is off to a 1-2 start and has lost the services of quarterback Casey Pachall. Trevone Boykin is no doubt a tick down from Pachall but at home, off a bye week, and against a defense that has allowed 315.7 ypg passing, I expect him to have one of his better games.

Ever since Week 1's dismal showing against Texas Tech at home – in what should have been SMU's Game of the Year – I've been looking to fade this team. You have three key Read more

SMU at Texas A&M
Saturday, 4 pm PT – ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -26.5 O/U 82
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -28.5 O/U 79
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Texas A&M -30.5
Andrew Lange’s Recommendation: Texas A&M 1st half

SMU can have all the bye weeks and time to prepare in the world and it still won't save them from getting beat up by Texas A&M. No question the Aggies are in a bad spot and as we saw last week with Michigan following the Notre Dame game, no one is immune to a letdown. But to me, there is a class and coaching difference that outweighs the situational.

In Week 1, which should have been SMU's Super Bowl as they were fortunate enough to host an in-state foe from a BCS conference, the Mustangs laid a big egg in a 41-23 loss to Texas Tech. Statistically the Mustangs were right there but the end result was nothing more than the Red Raiders Read more

College Football Handicapping: American Athletic Conference Stat Day

08.01.2013     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Our final look at a mid-major conference features the new American Athletic Conference. It’s a 10-team league that currently features six teams from last year’s Big East, and four teams from last year’s Conference USA. You can see an emphasis on markets in the CUSA invitees. SMU and Houston bring Dallas and Houston into the fold. Central Florida is based in Orlando...in the heart of a sports-loving state and near the massive amusement park complex run by the company that owns ESPN. Memphis isn’t a megaplex, but it’s in a great football state while also being in an NBA city. The conference is hoping to grow into a big deal given that strategy.

It’s not really a big deal yet. Though, Louisville sure did the conference proud last year in the Sugar Bowl when they stunned Florida. The most surprising thing to me about the numbers you’ll be reading today is that Louisville didn’t look all that dominant by Big East standards. They played a lot of close games in a mediocre (or worse) conference before catching arrogant Florida napping and Read more

Fresno State -12.5 O/U 60.5
CRIS Current: Fresno State -12.5 O/U 59.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Fresno State -11

It was another up and down season for head coach June Jones the SMU Mustangs. They were the perfect definition of mediocre at 6-6 overall and 5-3 in C-USA play. They won back-to-back games only once but by all reports are motivated and excited to be traveling to the island for the Hawaii Bowl to take on the Fresno State. Jones on his team’s postseason berth: "Having been affiliated with this bowl since its inception, I know that it is one of the best bowl experiences in college football. I'm very excited for our players, staff and fans. This is a special experience." SMU has been to three previous bowl games under Jones going 2-1 SU Read more

Texas A&M at SMU
Andrew Lange's Recommendation:
Texas A&M
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - FSN
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -10.5 O/U 53
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -12 O/U 61
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Texas A&M -8

Last year, SMU came into the season with five senior offensive linemen and the most career starts of any team in the country. In Week 1, they were absolutely destroyed by Texas A&M 46-14. In that game, the Aggies recorded eight sacks and helped cause two interceptions. This year, SMU has one of the least experienced offensive lines in the country and faces an A&M squad that record eight sacks and held Florida to 3.0 ypc last week. SMU’s offense is noted for being able to pick apart week defenses. Unlikely the case on Saturday.

As we saw in last year's meeting and in Week 1 against Baylor, SMU is prone to sloppy play, mistakes, and an inability to make stops. The Read more
