Hawaii Bowl – Honolulu
Monday, December 24, 5 pm PT – ESPN
SMU vs. Fresno State
CRIS Opener:
Fresno State -12.5 O/U 60.5
CRIS Current: Fresno State -12.5 O/U 59.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Fresno State -11

It was another up and down season for head coach June Jones the SMU Mustangs. They were the perfect definition of mediocre at 6-6 overall and 5-3 in C-USA play. They won back-to-back games only once but by all reports are motivated and excited to be traveling to the island for the Hawaii Bowl to take on the Fresno State. Jones on his team’s postseason berth: "Having been affiliated with this bowl since its inception, I know that it is one of the best bowl experiences in college football. I'm very excited for our players, staff and fans. This is a special experience." SMU has been to three previous bowl games under Jones going 2-1 SU Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Texas A&M Aggies at SMU Mustangs

Texas A&M at SMU
Andrew Lange's Recommendation:
Texas A&M
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - FSN
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -10.5 O/U 53
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -12 O/U 61
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Texas A&M -8

Last year, SMU came into the season with five senior offensive linemen and the most career starts of any team in the country. In Week 1, they were absolutely destroyed by Texas A&M 46-14. In that game, the Aggies recorded eight sacks and helped cause two interceptions. This year, SMU has one of the least experienced offensive lines in the country and faces an A&M squad that record eight sacks and held Florida to 3.0 ypc last week. SMU’s offense is noted for being able to pick apart week defenses. Unlikely the case on Saturday.

As we saw in last year's meeting and in Week 1 against Baylor, SMU is prone to sloppy play, mistakes, and an inability to make stops. The Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Two QB system sparks offensive turnaround for Texas

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma -10 vs. Texas O/U 56.5

Since the benching of quarterback Garrett Gilbert, Texas' offense has gained a ton of momentum as they into Saturday's showdown against Oklahoma. The Longhorns have been working the two-quarterback system to perfection with Case McCoy and David Ash. Since taking over for Gilbert in the second quarter against BYU, the duo has combined to go 38-of-53, for 546 yards, 4 TDs, and 0 INTs. And those numbers came against fairly decent competition (BYU, UCLA, and Iowa State). Overall, UT's offense is averaging over 200 ypg on the ground and through the air. Texas is also +6 in turnover margin after a -12 mark in 2010.

Trying to play it cool or genuinely oblivious to what surrounds them, a handful of Oklahoma players weren't even aware that Gilbert was no longer playing and had Read more

NCAAF Pointspread Preview: Central Florida Knights at BYU Cougars

Central Florida at BYU (Friday, 5 pm PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opening Line: BYU -3.5 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current Line: BYU -2.5 O/U 43

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: BYU’s stock to a huge hit following last week’s blowout loss to rival Utah. The Cougars were outscored 40-0 in the second half and as a result, we are seeing what appears to be a heavily discounted price on Saturday’s matchup. Central Florida is a good team with athletes and speed, but traveling cross country to a tough environment where an outright win will likely be needed to cover the spread won’t be easy. Had BYU won or at least been competitive against Utah, I think we’d be seeing a -6 or even a full -7 on this game. But the reality Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: A look at quarterbacks in the Big XII

05.24.2011     02:47 PM     Printer Friendly
Last week we broke down the returning quarterback situations in the SEC. Today we take a look at the Big XII (or Big Ten...or Big Eight +2...or whatever).

Texas – Junior Garrett Gilbert has not officially been named the starter but all signs point to him getting the nod. Gilbert though will have to perform better after posting a dismal 10-17 TD-to-INT ratio last year. In conference games, Gilbert's QB rating barely topped 100.0 which is pretty poor.

Oklahoma – Landry Jones enters the campaign as the top signal caller in the league after tossing 38 TDs and 4,700 yards in 2010. With Jones back as well as four o-line starters, the Sooners are Read more

Betting Preview: Texas Longhorns at Texas Tech Red Raiders

Texas at Texas Tech +3 O/U 55
Recommendation: PASS
Saturday, 5 pm PT – ABC

Texas head coach Mack Brown said before the season that he wants the Longhorns to revert to a more powerful, downhill running game; a far cry from what they used during the McCoy years and, to some extent, the Vince Young era. So far that looks to be the case as the Longhorns have run 56% of the time compared to 50% last season.

Texas didn't show much offense in two workmanlike victories over Rice and Wyoming. In 2009 the Longhorns rolled up 1,106 yards of total offense and 100 points through the first two games of the season but we have seen a significant reduction – 758 total yards and 64 points – against basically the same type of opponents. "We're still a work in progress," Gilbert said. "We're making strides to where we want to be."

Last season under head coach Mike Leach the Red Raiders relied on the pass for 66% of the plays. That surely Read more

More starting quarterbacks named in the Big XII

08.23.2010     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Big XII quarterback situation got a bit clearer this past week after Kansas, Colorado and Texas Tech all named their Week 1 starters. As this article points out, the conference no longer has that look of a Heisman candidate breading ground but there are still plenty that have to feel pretty good (Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Baylor, Missouri) about who will be taking the snaps. Others remain at least somewhat confident (Texas, Texas Tech, Iowa State). While some look destine to hide behind the run game (Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State). Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden is a big question mark based on how much the Cowboys plan to Read more

Longhorns must adjust offensive style after departure of McCoy

08.04.2010     02:17 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Colt McCoy under center, Texas was a pass first offense. Not a bad move considering McCoy completed 70% of his passes throughout his career. But with McCoy gone, head coach Mack Brown says that the Longhorns are going to need to put more focus on the run game. Back in 2005, when Texas won the National Title, they ran for 275 ypg. The year prior they posted 299 ypg on the ground. Only once during McCoy's four years did Texas average more than 200 ypg rushing. Sophomore Garrett Gilbert, who took over for McCoy in the title game against Alabama, has some talent, but asking him to duplicate McCoy's numbers is not realistic. Brown spent much of the offseason rehashing various schemes and blocking assignments. Last year, Texas had success running the ball against the likes of Wyoming and UTEP but there were more than a few games where the run game was non-existent.
