CFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Saskatchewan Roughriders at Ottawa Redblacks

Saskatchewan at Ottawa
Recommendation: Saskatchewan first half

The Saskatchewan Roughriders rode a strong defensive performance to a Week 1 victory as home dogs against the defending Grey Cup champions last week and will look to keep their momentum rolling into Ottawa as they take to the road for Week 2. Ottawa is the only team that didn’t play in Week 1 providing a unique handicap here with Saskatchewan having a game under their belt already while Ottawa will be opening up their regular season here. Saskatchewan QB Zach Collaros and the Riders offense is far from a finished product and they were lackluster for most of last week’s game. The team scored 27 points but one of the TD’s came on a Ricky Ray Pick Six and a couple other scoring drives were heavily aided by Toronto penalties on defense so the Saskatchewan offense is still a work in progress despite the scoring output in Week 1. The Saskatchewan defense was outstanding last week as they held the Argos to fewer than 300 total yards which is a great accomplishment for any CFL defense. Saskatchewan will play WR turned CB Duron Carter exclusively in their Read more

CFL Betting Free Pick: Edmonton Eskimos at Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Edmonton -7.5 at Winnipeg O/U 49.5
Recommendation: Over

We have seen some deflation in the total here in this 2018 CFL season opener between the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers taking place on Thursday night. Note this game will be airing live on ESPN2 in the United States as are all Week 1 games in the CFL. This is a rematch of the West Division Semifinal from last year’s playoffs which Edmonton won and covered on this field by a score of 39-32. Edmonton should have a terrific offense yet again this season with veteran QB Mike Reilly at the controls and coming off a very strong 2017 season. RB C.J. Gable transformed this offense after the Eskimos acquired him midway through last season in a trade with Hamilton. After Gable’s addition to the team in early October last season, Edmonton scored 28+ points in every remaining game and went 6-1 SU and ATS in the process. They became a very well balanced offense that was difficult to stop and even with Brandon Zylstra leaving for the NFL, the Eskimos still possess plenty of talented receivers for Reilly to throw the ball to with this Edmonton passing Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs

Philadelphia (Nola) +120 at Chicago (Quintana) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Philadelphia's Aaron Nola has been a model of consistency; on a strong stretch that includes an allowance of only a single run or less in five of his last six starts. He has shown the ability to be effective and pitch well on the road too with a 2.45 ERA and has pitched deep into ballgames going 7+ innings in six of his last ten starts. That should save what has sometimes been a shaky and erratic Phillies bullpen from having to get a ton of outs in tonight's game. On the flip side, lefty Jose Quintana has been slightly better of late but those two good outings came against the subpar lineups of the Reds and Mets. Overall, Quintana has struggled this season at Wrigley Field with a 6.66 ERA in five starts and his track record against the Phillies is not much better: 0-2, 7.36 ERA in two previous starts. Philadelphia cashed a big dog ticket last night in the series opener and I like their chances here of making it two wins in a row at another attractive plus price.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Mets at Atlanta Braves

New York (Vargas) at Atlanta (Teheran)
Recommendation: Atlanta Team Total OVER 5

The Mets don't have many viable starting pitching options beyond Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. They traded Matt Harvey, Steven Matz left his last start with a finger injury, Zack Wheeler's ERA is currently 5.40, rookie P.J. Conlon isn't ready to compete at this level, the aforementioned Syndergaard was just placed on the DL, and Robert Gsellman is clearly better off as a reliever. That leaves Seth Lugo, who is likely to start later this week and tonight's starter Jason Vargas. Last season, Vargas was clearly "fresh" after tossing only 55 innings for the Royals in 2015 and 2016 due to injury. He logged 179.2 IP last year and was serviceable with a 4.16 ERA. This season has been a disaster even when you account for some "unlucky" results. Vargas' K-rate is an excellent 9.3 and his BABIP (.424) and LOB rate (57.4%) suggest things should start to go his way moving forward. But there are plenty of signs indicating his path towards the "norm" won't be easy. Virtually every batted ball statistic (line drive, soft, and hard hit rates) are currently Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Los Angeles Angels at Toronto Blue Jays

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Los Angeles (Skaggs) -118 at Toronto (Sanchez) O/U 9
Recommendation: Los Angeles

Tyler Skaggs has been solid entering this contest with a 2.88 ERA. He’s surrendered only five runs in his last 17.1 innings of work. Skaggs has a sparkling 1.14 ERA on the road allowing three runs in 23.2 innings of work and the Angels are 3-1 in his four road starts. His control has improved and now he gets to face a Blue Jays lineup that has been inept against lefty pitching as Toronto is hitting a collective .226 against southpaws. On the flip side, Aaron Sanchez for Toronto has struggled to the tune of a 5.68 ERA in his last three starts and a 5.06 ERA in five home starts. His command has been off issuing an average of over five walks per 9 innings on the season and Toronto is only 3-6 this season in Sanchez’s nine starts driving up his pitch countand forcing a mediocre Jays bullpen into action earlier in the games he starts. The Angels are a phenomenal 14-5 on the road this season while the Blue Jays are currently in the midst of a nasty 2-7 losing skid in their last 9 games sending them below .500 for the first time this season. MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Boston (Porcello) +125 at New York (Tanaka) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Boston

It’s not often that you will get the Boston Red Sox at this kind of price tag with Rick Porcello on the mound and I feel this is a spot and matchup worthy of taking advantage of this rare opportunity. Porcello has had a fine start to the 2018 season registering a rock solid 2.14 ERA in 6 starts and Boston is 5-1 in those six Porcello starts. He is on a six consecutive quality start streak entering tonight’s game against the Bronx Bombers and current Yankees hitters are collectively batting a paltry .204 average. One of the keys to his success has also been keeping the ball in the yard as Porcello has conceded only 2 home runs in 46.1 innings of work this season. That coincides with his massive jump in groundball rate percentage going from 39.2% last year to 47.6% so far this season along with a drop in his home run to fly ball rate which has gone from 14.7% last season to 4.8% this season. That type of profile in theory should go a long way toward having some success against this Yankees lineup which has feasted on the home run ball for the Read more
