NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Vegas Golden Knights at Tampa Bay Lightning

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vegas +145 at Tampa Bay O/U 6
Recommendation: Vegas

The Vegas Golden Knights qualify under a 20-10 67% betting angle over the last two seasons; bet on teams playing their normal scheduling routine against teams playing their first game following the league mandated five-day break which the Tampa Bay Lightning will be doing tonight. However, that is not the sole reason for backing Vegas tonight. Tampa Bay suffered a massive injury in their last game prior to the break against the Calgary Flames when their stalwart defenseman and one of the best in the NHL at his position Victor Hedman left the game with a left knee injury that has sidelined him for 4-6 weeks which opens up a huge void the Lightning are going to have to fill on their blue line. Hedman plays the most minutes of any Lightning defensemen and plays in all situations so his absence is as big as it gets and the fact, Tampa Bay crumbled mentally and physically getting routed by Calgary 5-1 and falling apart in the moments following Hedman’s departure from the game speaks volumes about the impact he makes on this hockey team and their success. Tampa Bay has had Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Minnesota Wild

Calgary at Minnesota -115 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

The Calgary Flames have been mired with consistency problems all season and I expect those to continue tonight as they head to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Wild. Calgary is coming off a nice 3-2 home win against the Anaheim Ducks; their third straight win overall, all of which coming at home. But now they head on the road where they have dropped two straight to San Jose and Anaheim. This should be a strong step up effort spot for Minnesota after they were hammered in a 7-2 road loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. The Wild emphasized playing better defensively and their overall game without the puck in practice heading into this game so I’d expect them to put forth a much improved defensive effort tonight on home ice where the Wild have won four straight games including a pair of wins against really good Western Conference teams like Dallas and Nashville. Minnesota recently got Nino Neiderreiter back from injury and he’s already made a big impact for the Wild scoring three goals in two games since his return. Calgary goaltender Mike Smith is Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Georgetown Hoyas at St. John's Red Storm

Georgetown at St. John's -6.5 O/U 148.5
Recommendation: St. John's

Georgetown and St. John’s are a combined 1-7 SU in Big East conference play. I think the spot, the price, and matchup works in favor of the Red Storm. St. John’s has struggled to adapt to life without Marcus LoVett who has missed several games due to a knee injury. LoVett is one of the team's better perimeter defenders and it's shown up in the stats as Big East teams are shooting 48% from three against the Red Storm. Georgetown, who beat up on an extremely soft non-conference slate, are one of the few Big East teams that are offensively challenge. Through four games, the Hoyas rank near the bottom in nearly every offensive category despite playing the likes of DePaul, Marquette and Butler who grade out as below average on the defensive end. Georgetown senior point guard Jonathan Mulmore is having a very rough go of it with just 13 points in four Big East games and a negative 12 assists to 13 turnovers ratio. That is the key aspect of this game for St. John’s. The Red Storm are 6th in the country in turnovers forced per game while the Hoyas have been Read more

Birmingham Bowl Betting Preview: Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. South Florida Bulls

Birmingham Bowl
Texas Tech vs. South Florida
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: South Florida -2 O/U 64.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -3 O/U 65.5
Recommendation: South Florida

On paper, there looks to be plenty of potential for points in the Birmingham Bowl with a pair of squads that rank in the top 30 in both ppg and ypg. However, with a 90% chance of rain expected, conditions could impact the amount of offense that is produced. Defensively, Texas Tech made strides this season. After allowing over 7 ypp in 2016, the Red Raiders shaved off nearly 1.5 ypp. That tied into a massive 11.7 ppg allowed improvement. But this defense still had problems, particularly against upper-tier offenses. Arizona State, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma averaged over 45 ppg against the Red Raiders. In the end, TTU’s stop unit, while no longer horrific, is still well below average. You could certainly make a case that USF is on par with those four aforementioned offenses. The key for the Bulls is balance and they have that in spades with Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Florida Panthers at Arizona Coyotes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida at Arizona -110 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Arizona

Arizona's six-game losing streak has a good chance to end tonight as the offensive inept Florida Panthers come to town. The Panthers have been held to two goals or less in four straight games and have posted only seven total goals scored during that span. Florida is also a very below average team defensively and it has been even tougher for them to keep pucks out of their own net since Roberto Luongo their #1 goaltender went down to injury a few weeks ago. James Reimer has not been all that sharp in between the pipes for Florida in place of the injured Luongo and you could make a solid argument that Arizona will have the better goalie in this matchup with Antti Raanta back in net for the Coyotes and finally healthy after dealing with injuries earlier on in the season. Florida is not a team I trust laying a price on the road even against a league worst Arizona Coyotes squad but I'm willing to give Arizona a chance to get back on track in this game tonight. Yes, it's true Arizona is not a good hockey team and yes they are on a current 6 game losing streak but they have faced Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Albany Great Danes at Memphis Tigers

Albany +1 at Mmephis O/U 140.5
Recommendation: Albany

There is a very good reason the Memphis Tigers are only near a pick em in this contest tonight at home against the Albany Great Danes who play out of the America East conference. Albany simply has the more talented and experienced squad. The Great Danes are 10-1 this season including 4-1 on the highway and they return much of the squad that was narrowly defeated by Vermont in last year’s America East conference tournament title game. The team is led by a tremendously talented and experienced backcourt of Joe Cremo and David Nichols who both combine to average over 34 points scored per game. Cremo has an over 50% FG shooting percentage including a sensational 26-of-47 shooting from the perimeter. The team also has a pair of senior forwards in Travis Charles averaging 14.7 points per game and Greig Stire who contributes over 7 points and rebounds per game for Albany. Albany also makes their free throws which is so important in this kind of closely contested game as the Great Danes shoot 75.4% from the FT line as a team. Memphis was able to notch a pair of decent home wins Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Rangers at Pittsburgh -160 O/U 6
Recommendation: Over

The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins are both playing good hockey right now and an offensive surge on both sides is the main reason for it. The Rangers have scored 3+ goals in 8 of their last 10 games. Pittsburgh during their current four- game win streak have potted 19 goals during that span. The series history between these two teams points to one high scoring game after another. The Over is 6-1-1 in the last 8 head-to-head meetings overall between the Rangers and Penguins including 5-0-1 to the Over in the last six games between the clubs here in Pittsburgh. Henrik Lundqvist gave up five goals to Pittsburgh when he faced them earlier this season in a game that flew Over the total ending up 5-4 in favor of the Penguins. Pittsburgh has been forced to start their backup goalie Tristan Jarry each night out and he has been strong so far in relief of injured #1 netminder Matt Murray but he was also the benefactor of facing the offensively challenged Buffalo Sabres in each of his last two starts and they are one of the worst offensive teams in the NHL. This will be a Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Dallas Stars at Vegas Golden Knights

Dallas at Vegas -110 O/U 6
Recommendation: Vegas

The betting markets have been hesitant and reluctant all season to formulate the opinion that maybe, just maybe the expansion franchise Vegas Golden Knights are a legitimately good hockey team. Despite being in Year #1 of their existence, this squad has been an undervalued commodity right from the beginning of the season with the Knights leading the Pacific Division with a 15-7 overall record and that includes a near perfect record of 9-1 on home ice for Vegas here at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas has more offensive firepower than many people thought as the team is averaging a whopping 4.4 goals per game in their home games. James Neal has been an offensive catalyst for the team but lately he has gotten plenty of support from William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault. Karlsson has scored at least once and recorded multiple points in each victory during the Golden Knights current five game winning streak while Marchessault has recorded a goal and two assists in each of the last three games for Vegas. The Vegas Golden Knights have used a very aggressive, fast skating style to frustrate Read more

College Football Betting Preview: SMU Mustangs at Memphis Tigers

SMU at Memphis
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPNN
CRIS Opener: Memphis -11.5 O/U 77
CRIS Current: Memphis -12.5 O/U 71.5
Recommendation: SMU

Seen this total get played down nearly a touchdown due to forecasted winds in the 20+ mph range. That’s an obvious concern for two teams in SMU and Memphis that like to throw the football. The passing games will still be on display but the deep shots could be limited. In terms of running the ball, SMU could have an advantage with stronger conference numbers than Memphis. Against AAC foes, the Mustangs average 5.2 ypc and 181.8 ypg. The Tigers are a notch below at 4.7 ypc and 150.7 ypg. Defensively, there isn't much that separates either squad. Memphis' overall numbers are slightly better but SMU's took a hit after back-to-back games against the potent offenses of UCF and Navy in which the defense allowed nearly 8 ypp combined.

I think the real storyline here is the seemingly inflated pointspread. Memphis is one of the hottest teams in the country having won and covered five straight (some got a push in 30-27 win over Navy). Read more
