College Football Betting Preview: New Mexico State Aggies at Idaho Vandals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Mexico State at Idaho
Saturday, 2 pm PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
Idaho -4 O/U 67.5
CRIS Current: Idaho -4 O/U 66.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Idaho -3.5
Drew Martin's Recommendation: Over

The Idaho Vandals celebrate homecoming as they play host to the New Mexico State Aggies in a Sun Belt clash of bottom dwellers. It’s a unique scenario where the winless Vandals are 4-point favorites but perhaps warranted considering NMSU has allowed 41.8 ppg to FBS competition. But that horrific number isn’t that far removed from the home side which under the same parameters has allowed 39.2 ppg.  Even more alarming is 11 of their 12 combined games vs. FBS came against “mid-major teams.”

With two weak defenses the question now becomes are the offenses good enough to take advantage? I see promise with Idaho quarterback Matt Linehan who in his first season has completed Read more

South Alabama at Idaho
Saturday, 2 pm PT - ESPN 3
CRIS Opener:
South Alabama -7
CRIS Current: South Alabama -4
Rob Veno's Power Rating: South Alabama -9
Drew Martin's Recommendation: South Alabama

Unique conference matchup with South Alabama traveling to tiny Moscow, Idaho to take on the Vandals.  Idaho has shown signs of being more competitive this season but have yet to record a straight up win. After beating Kent in the opener, USA dropped back-to-back games to Mississippi State and what looks to be the best team in the Sun Belt, Georgia Southern. Oddsmakers opened South Alabama as a touchdown favorite, but throughout the week the betting markets have pushed this number down to -4.  Taking a quick glance at this matchup you can understand the money favoring the Vandals. They have the better quarterback and host a team traveling across two time zones. However, there are major Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Idaho Vandals at Ohio Bobcats

Idaho at Ohio
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
Ohio -13 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Ohio -14 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Ohio -14
Drew Martin's Recommendation: Idaho

The Ohio Bobcats will host the Idaho Vandals in their home opener on Saturday night. Idaho, led by a freshman quarterback, will travel over 2,000 miles to Athens, Ohio. The Vandals have lost 32 of their last 38 football games and they take on a Bobcats squad who has made five straight bowl appearances. Just glancing at this non-conference matchup you would most likely think it’s a mismatch, however as we uncover more about each of these teams you may be surprised.

Frank Solich is in his tenth year as the Bobcats head coach. The Ohio native took over a program which only had two winning seasons in the last twenty-two years. He has led the Bobcats to five straight bowl games and has retained his offensive and defensive Read more

Minnesota will be without its leading scorer again for Saturday's home game vs. Northwestern. Andre Hollins is recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the opening minute of a home win over Wisconsin on Jan. 22. Hollins averages 15.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He was unable to play earlier this week in an 82-78 loss at Nebraska.

Cincinnati senior center Justin Jackson returned to the lineup in Thursday's 69-66 win at Louisville. Jackson injured his ankle early in the first half of Sunday's win at Temple and didn't return. But he looked just fine against the Cardinals, producing 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots in 37 minutes of playing time. The Bearcats won outright as nine-point underdogs and hooked up money-line supporters with a +350 return (paid $350 on $100 wagers). If you didn't know already, now you do. Cincy is a legit national-title contender because it rebounds and defends as well as team in the country. And Mick Cronin has a senior leader in Sean Kilpatrick that dropped 29 points on U of L and always wants the rock at crunch time.

Rick Pitino's squad had been without Read more

College Football Handicapping: Week 10 Injury Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For Thursday’s AAC matchup vs. South Florida, Houston RB Ryan Jackson is ‘questionable’ after possibly sustaining a concussion in last week’s 49-14 win at Rutgers. Jackson has rushed 95 times for a team-high 477 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

USC is hoping to get star WR Marquise Lee (knee) back for Friday’s game at Oregon State. Lee missed last week’s win over Utah and is ‘questionable’ against the Beavers. The Trojans will be without starting TE Randall Telfer and the laundry list of defensive injuries continues to grow. DE Morgan Breslin, who had a team-high 13 sacks in 2012, remains ‘out’ with a hip injury. Starting LB Lamar Dawson was recently lost to a season-ending injury along with reserve safety Gerald Bowman. Starting cornerback Anthony Brown (arm) is also ‘out’ at OSU.

Mike Riley’s team has plenty of its own injury concerns. On the last play of Oregon State’s 20-12 home loss to Stanford last week, WR Kevin Cummings was lost for the season with a broken wrist. Cummings had 23 receptions for 254 yards and two TDs during his senior Read more

College Football Handicapping: What to do with bad football teams?

09.17.2013     12:31 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We're through Week 3 of the college football season and for a few teams it's been a struggle. Some of those struggles oddsmakers and bettors spotted well in advance while others weren't as obvious. Let's take a look at some of these teams and decide whether or not they have "bet on" potential moving forward.

Wake Forest (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS) - For years the Demon Deacons fielded a competitive team with pointspread value under long-time head coach Jim Grobe. But the program has unquestionably deteriorated with records of 5-7, 3-9, 6-7, and 5-7 the last four years. Even with solid turnover margins of +8 and +9 – a staple under Grobe –the last two seasons, Wake looks outmanned and slow compared to the rest of the ACC. They're off to a 1-2 start and once again can't run the football (86.3 ypg) or find consistency in the passing game with senior Tanner Price. This is likely a do-or-die season Grobe and I don't see many more chances for straight up wins on the schedule. This week's price of -3 at Army tells us all we need to know about Wake's place in the betting markets.

Florida International (0-3 SU/ATS) - Pretty Read more

College Football Betting Update: Idaho's circus-like season continues

UPDATE

San Jose State -19 at Idaho O/U 55

Idaho's laundry list of issues just got longer following the suspension of starting quarterback Dominique Blackman and linebacker Conrad Scheidt (failed multiple drug tests). The Vandals plan on going with two quarterbacks against San Jose Stare. You also had a back-up tight end suspended for a controversial Tweet about the firing of head coach Robb Akey. Offensive coordinator Jason Gesser took over for Akey during the bye week. Note that Idaho has played five of its last seven on the road. The two games at the Kibbie Dome…a 40-37 loss to Wyoming and 26-18 win over New Mexico State.

College Football Betting: Idaho fires head coach Robb Akey

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Off a 42-point loss and heading into the bye week, Idaho decided it was time to cut bait with head coach Robb Akey. Offensive coordinator Jason Gesser will take over for the remainder of the season. Things will probably get worse before they get better for the Vandals as three of their last four games come against San Jose State, BYU and Utah State.

We wonder if Idaho knows it is a double-digit betting favorite this weekend?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Mexico State at Idaho -10.5 O/U 58.5

Are we sure Idaho should be favored by more than 10 points in a football game that as far as we know will be played 11 on 11? Make no mistake, New Mexico State is a BAD football team and the Vandals have played a fairly tough slate, but the line seems awful rich for a squad with these types of numbers...

Idaho's National Rankings
No. 121 Scoring - 13.0 ppg
No. 121 Rushing - 80.2 ypg
No. 74 Passing - 221.0 ypg
No. 113 Total Offense - 301.3 ypg

No. 121 Scoring D - 42.8 ppg
No. 81 Rusing D - 171.8 ypg
No. 105 Passing D - 283.6 ypg
No. 100 Total D - 455.4 ypg

Note that Rob Veno's Power Ratings have Idaho -8.5.

College Football Handicapping: Teams potentially playing for exercise

11.30.2011     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The final week of the college football regular season and we take a look at those teams in "playing for exercise" situations. Note that final games (especially at home) can sometimes provide a boost in effort. Also factor in the inflated pointspreads with many of these games projected to be significant mismatches.

UNLV +38.5 at TCU - The Rebels have been halfway competitive at home with wins over Colorado State and Hawaii. They also were tied with San Diego State last week in the third quarter only to allowed 17 unanswered points and miss out on the pointspread cover (+16.5). But back on the road however, where they are on an 11-37 ATS run, it is hard to imagine much of an effort. TCU can clinch the Mountain West title with a win so the Horned Frogs will be at least somewhat motivated. TCU has won the last three games in the series by scores of 48-6, 41-0 and 44-14.

Idaho +20 at Nevada - The Vandals may have given their best effort of the season last week in a demoralizing 49-42 OT home loss to Utah State. Concerns here though for the home side as Nevada saw its WAC title hopes come crashing down with back-to-back Read more
