College Football Betting Update: Idaho's circus-like season continues

10.30.2012     06:27 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

San Jose State -19 at Idaho O/U 55

Idaho's laundry list of issues just got longer following the suspension of starting quarterback Dominique Blackman and linebacker Conrad Scheidt (failed multiple drug tests). The Vandals plan on going with two quarterbacks against San Jose Stare. You also had a back-up tight end suspended for a controversial Tweet about the firing of head coach Robb Akey. Offensive coordinator Jason Gesser took over for Akey during the bye week. Note that Idaho has played five of its last seven on the road. The two games at the Kibbie Dome…a 40-37 loss to Wyoming and 26-18 win over New Mexico State.

College Football Betting: Idaho fires head coach Robb Akey

Off a 42-point loss and heading into the bye week, Idaho decided it was time to cut bait with head coach Robb Akey. Offensive coordinator Jason Gesser will take over for the remainder of the season. Things will probably get worse before they get better for the Vandals as three of their last four games come against San Jose State, BYU and Utah State.

We wonder if Idaho knows it is a double-digit betting favorite this weekend?

New Mexico State at Idaho -10.5 O/U 58.5

Are we sure Idaho should be favored by more than 10 points in a football game that as far as we know will be played 11 on 11? Make no mistake, New Mexico State is a BAD football team and the Vandals have played a fairly tough slate, but the line seems awful rich for a squad with these types of numbers...

Idaho's National Rankings
No. 121 Scoring - 13.0 ppg
No. 121 Rushing - 80.2 ypg
No. 74 Passing - 221.0 ypg
No. 113 Total Offense - 301.3 ypg

No. 121 Scoring D - 42.8 ppg
No. 81 Rusing D - 171.8 ypg
No. 105 Passing D - 283.6 ypg
No. 100 Total D - 455.4 ypg

Note that Rob Veno's Power Ratings have Idaho -8.5.

College Football Handicapping: Teams potentially playing for exercise

11.30.2011     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The final week of the college football regular season and we take a look at those teams in "playing for exercise" situations. Note that final games (especially at home) can sometimes provide a boost in effort. Also factor in the inflated pointspreads with many of these games projected to be significant mismatches.

UNLV +38.5 at TCU - The Rebels have been halfway competitive at home with wins over Colorado State and Hawaii. They also were tied with San Diego State last week in the third quarter only to allowed 17 unanswered points and miss out on the pointspread cover (+16.5). But back on the road however, where they are on an 11-37 ATS run, it is hard to imagine much of an effort. TCU can clinch the Mountain West title with a win so the Horned Frogs will be at least somewhat motivated. TCU has won the last three games in the series by scores of 48-6, 41-0 and 44-14.

Idaho +20 at Nevada - The Vandals may have given their best effort of the season last week in a demoralizing 49-42 OT home loss to Utah State. Concerns here though for the home side as Nevada saw its WAC title hopes come crashing down with back-to-back Read more

College Football Betting Preview: New Mexico State Aggies at BYU Cougars

New Mexico State +22.5 at BYU O/U 60.5
Recommendation: New Mexico State

I've backed New Mexico State on multiple occasions this season and had fairly good results. The Aggies are much improved across the board and have been competitive in nearly all of their games this season. They have two competent quarterbacks in Matt Christian and Travaughn Colwell and enough of a run game (141.2 ypg) to keep opposing teams honest. BYU may be 7-3 but can hardly be considered an elite level team. Last week they crushed Idaho 42-7 but the Vandals were off a rare victory and showed absolutely no effort from the opening whistle. The Cougars are back with Jake Heaps at quarterback after Riley Nelson was hurt last game. They are both essentially the same player (Nelson more of a runner) in terms of production but the constant shuffling has created inconsistency and lack of continuity with the offense. And prior to the win over Idaho, BYU hadn’t posted a blowout win despite a Read more

Idaho at San Jose State
Recommendation: San Jose -4.5 1st half

San Jose State’s surprising high octane offense likely to be in high gear here against a downtrodden Idaho team which came up short in what may have been a last gasp effort at home vs. Hawaii a week ago. Adding to the Vandals problems is the unsettled quarterback situation and the loss of two more wide receivers. Senior signal caller Brian Reader took a back seat to sophomore Tyler Davis last week and Davis promptly went 6-of-17 for 33 yards with an interception before being pulled in the second half. Reader then entered and added 5-of-7 for 52 yards and a pick causing head coach Robb Akey to say this week that it will be a game time decision as to who starts here. No matter who goes, the Vandals have no running game to lean on and without perimeter weapons and a steady quarterback, the offense should again sputter. San Jose quarterback Matt Faulkner has been on fire lately averaging 316 passing Read more

College Football Handicapping: Following the betting markets on game day

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While chatting with a few fellow Sportsmemo Handicappers during Saturday's live blog, we kept noticing the line on the Fresno-Idaho contest getting bombarded with bets towards the Vandals. It was the second big push as Fresno opened the week as 6-point favorites but by mid-week was down to -3. The game originally wasn't on my radar – Fresno not the type of team I like laying more than a field goal with on the road and Idaho hadn't look very good in its first three games. But as the game neared its start, all of a sudden, some shops had Idaho favored! I was aware that Fresno had some injury concerns but didn't see anything that in my opinion warranted a full touchdown move. Long story short, I ended up grabbing Fresno and it paid off as the Bulldogs took a 24-17 halftime lead and rolled to a 48-24 victory (outgained the Vandals 513-283). Fading a market move like that doesn't always work in our favor but I was confident in this particular case that the original number couldn't have been that "bad" and I was getting optimum value. And that is what it is all about – tracking the markets, spotting value and using your best judgment.  Hopefully we’ll Read more

College Football ATS Notes: Week 3 potential look-ahead situations

09.12.2011     09:58 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

A look at this weekend's potential look-ahead spots for a couple of college football teams.

Alabama -46.5 vs. North Texas (vs. Arkansas Week 4) - It won't take much focus for the Crimson Tide to name the score in this one. Last year, in a similar spot, Alabama came off a win over Penn State and went on the road and crushed Duke 62-13 prior to playing the Razorbacks.

Arkansas -24.5 vs. Troy (at Alabama Week 4) - The Razorbacks are expected to get a slightly tougher challenge as Troy has the experience and capabilities to give the big boys a test.

Michigan -28.5 vs. Eastern Michigan (vs. San Read more

Heavy steam on Baylor; Sportsbooks finally hang Oregon/LSU line

08.31.2011     11:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the bigger lines moves of the morning saw TCU pounded down from -6 to -4/-4.5 for its Friday matchup at Baylor. Another big move was Missouri hammered up from -16 to -20.5 against Miami (OH). Nearly all of the 7's on the Idaho/Bowling Green game were taken out with the Vandals now 6-point home chalk. And we are finally starting to see some offshore and Vegas sportsbooks post odds on the much anticipated Oregon/LSU matchup. 5Dimes was one of the few books accepting bets over the last week but CRIS, Pinnacle and Hilton joined the party earlier today. The Ducks reopened as a 4-point favorite.

NCAAF Betting Notes: Idaho has defense to compete in WAC

07.29.2011     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Idaho doesn't exactly have a strong defensive pedigree but that could change in 2011. Head coach Robb Akey has a defensive background and has seen his squad steadily improve over the last three seasons. In 2008, with four starters back, Idaho allowed 42.8 pg and recorded only 10 sacks but saw gains in 2009 (36.0 ppg, 15 sacks) and 2010 (28.3 ppg, 31 sacks). This season, with seven starters back, the unit expects to be the strength of the team.

“The size in those front guys helps,” Akey said. “We’re going to have two guys who are 300 pounds and can run in the middle of our defensive line. In my first year, we couldn’t put two guys together who weighed 300 pounds. That’s a great improvement.”

There are some concerns with depth as leading tackler and 1st team all-WAC linebacker Robert Siavii is out for the season with a knee injury as is Read more
