Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NFL Week 1 lines and the upcoming draft

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s time to give Jay Kornegay and his staff at the LVH Superbook credit once again for being the first to market here in Las Vegas with Week 1 NFL numbers.  Don’t tell me Kornegay wasn’t ready!  The NFL announced the 2013 schedule last Thursday evening, and the LVH had their sides and totals posted by noon on Friday.  For an older, non-strip property that lacks a marque signature attraction, Kornegay’s aggressive bookmaking tactics have, quite frankly, allowed the LVH to remain relevant in a difficult era for many similar aging off-strip casinos.

When those Week 1 pointspreads were posted, bettors didn’t flock to the betting windows to lock up their money until September with a wager.  In fact, the betting marketplace gave a collective yawn, with only a handful of big bets written over the weekend on sides or totals.  Why the lack of initial movement?  Two reasons!

First, Jay put up good numbers.  There were no obvious “mistake” lines causing a flurry of betting activity.  And secondly – probably most importantly – we haven’t seen competing books put up alternate Read more

NFL Handicapping: Buffalo Bills playing better defense since bye week

Jacksonville at Buffalo 6 O/U 44.5

Article from Pro Football Weekly on the noticeable improvement of Buffalo's defense over the last month. The Bills have gone under the total in three of their last four games.

“Everybody coming together and doing their part and knowing exactly what they’re doing,” he explained. “(We are) playing with more confidence within the scheme instead of trying to figure out what to do and second-guessing. Guys are now getting used to playing different techniques, playing the two, three, me playing 'Will' linebacker. We’re getting it all together and getting our confidence where it needs to be.”

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: Dissecting the NFL's bottom feeders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been watching the contenders from both conferences closely. This week, I turned my focus towards the bottom feeders; teams that some folks have been calling ‘dead’ in recent weeks.

With six games remaining on the slate for every NFL team, there’s still plenty of time to make money fading the teams that have quit on their coach and their season. And there’s most definitely an opportunity to make money with last place teams IF they play with passion and precision down the stretch.

Here’s my take on four teams that entered Sunday’s games in last place in their respective divisions.

Kansas City - We're 11 weeks into the season, and this sorry Chiefs offense hasn't improved one iota. There's talent to work with – Jamal Charles and Peyton Hillis make a decent 'thunder and lightning' duo running the football. Dwayne Bowe, Tony Moeaki, Dexter McCluster and Steve Breaston have all enjoyed past success as playmaking pass catchers, although Bowe got hurt early and wasn’t a factor here.

But the same two issues that have plagued KC all year haven't gone Read more

NFL Betting News: Jacksonville's Chad Henne gets start vs. Tennessee

Tennessee -3 at Jacksonville O/U 43.5

Jacksonville announced that Chad Henne will start against Tennessee. Henne filled in for an injured Blaine Gabbert and threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns in last week's 43-37 overtime loss to Houston. A lot of folks have been calling for Henne to step in for weeks. Now that they got their wish, we’ll go ahead and predict something along the lines of this for Henne on Sunday.

Betting NFL Totals: A closer look at the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Heading into Week 6 of the NFL season, there are plenty of personnel and fundamental adjustments to teams that need to be monitored closely. Today I’ll address a pair of teams which could, and in some instances, already do look different.

Cincinnati Bengals – Injuries to the defensive secondary crippled the Bengals earlier this season leading to a perception of them by many as an OVER team heading into their Week 3 game against Washington. That contest saw the line soar from its opener of 46.5 across three key numbers all the way to 49.5. The move was correct as the 38-31 final went nearly 20 points above the closing price. The following week saw Cincinnati defensive backs all over the injury report again and their game total at Jacksonville was bet up from 41.5 to 45.5 stampeding four key numbers along the way. That matchup featured a couple of missed opportunities including a third quarter goal line stand by the Jaguars helping it end 27-10. Important Cincinnati secondary members began to trickle back last week vs. Miami but that did not dampen the spirits of OVER bettors as they took the game from 44 to 45 Read more

Cincinnati -1 at Jacksonville O/U 44.5
Recommendation: Over

The Bengals defense was a unit of strength last year and looked pretty decent in August. But here in September, Cinci has been torched all three of their games. The Ravens moved through this D like a hot knife through butter, hanging 44 on the Bengals on opening night.

Cinci’s performance against the Browns the following week was even worse. Cleveland rookie QB Brandon Weeden had a QB rating of 5.1 in his debut at home against Philly. On the road at Cinci, Weeden had a QB rating of 114.9, throwing for 8.7 yards per attempt. Trent Richardson was held to 19 yards on 39 carries in the Browns opener. Against Cinci, he carried 19 times again, but against the Bengals D, he gained 109 yards. The Browns had only one ‘three and out’ all afternoon.  And last week, Washington hung 31 on the Bengals defense; again facing little resistance.

The Bengals secondary is a complete disaster area Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Houston Texans at Denver Broncos

CRIS Opener:
Denver pk O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Houston -2 O/U 46
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Houston -1

The exhibition season is officially over for the Texans after playing “warm-up” games against Miami and Jacksonville.  You can only play who’s on your schedule, and the Texans are now 2-0, but the test is much tougher this week against Denver.  The Texans pride themselves on their tremendous condition as a team, and with the Broncos off a Monday night affair, the Mile High conditions should be neutralized.  While holding the Jaguars to a franchise best 117 total yards last week, the Texans will feature a similar game plan in trying to control the clock.  The Texans ran the ball 48 times last week, which included over 43 minutes of possession time.  They are as complete and Read more

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: A look at second-year NFL quarterbacks and their teams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I focused on the five rookie starting quarterbacks behind center on opening day. This Sunday, continuing the theme, I spent the afternoon watching the five quarterbacks drafted in the first 35 picks last year, all of whom are now starters. I tried to evaluate each QB within the context of his team – they can't be successful without the complimentary pieces of the equation surrounding them, both on offense and on defense. Here are my thoughts:

Cincinnati Bengals – Andy Dalton was the only rookie QB to lead his team to the playoffs last year, and he’s definitely right there with Cam Newton as the best of the 2011 draft class right now. He’s got great footwork in the pocket; nimble on his feet while sidestepping pressure. And when we consider how much pressure he was under – the Bengals injury riddled line was really struggling unable to consistently run or pass block – Dalton’s performance was even that much more impressive.

This team is loaded with WR talent; not just AJ Green, although Green is really developing into a Top 10 NFL receiver. Armon Binns made plays all over the field today; Read more

NFL Betting Stock Watch: Small improvements could make Jacksonville an ATS sleeper

Buy the Jacksonville Jaguars – It all went wrong for the Jaguars in 2011 stemming from the quarterback position and lame duck head Jack Del Rio. The Jaguars finished the campaign 4-12 which included two wins against Indianapolis and another against Tampa Bay. Injuries hampered the Jaguars as well with 53 starts lost. The obvious key to any kind of turnaround this season starts with quarterback title Blaine Gabbert. It’s important to remember how awful Gabbert was last season. He was Jimmy Claussen bad! That should say it all; however he had a real uphill battle. The lockout sapped valuable reps and experience a young signal caller simply needs to prep for life in the NFL. He was given a poor support system, and lacked offensive weapons as well. Quite honestly, I’m not sure if Gabbert even has what it takes to become a better than average NFL quarterback. However, a modest improvement from Gabbert should equate to better results from the team. By many accounts this is going to be the case. He’ll have a much better support system around him with new head coach Mike Mularkey and company. Gabbert worked extremely hard during the off-season Read more
