College Football Betting Preview: New Mexico State Aggies at BYU Cougars

New Mexico State +22.5 at BYU O/U 60.5
Recommendation: New Mexico State

I've backed New Mexico State on multiple occasions this season and had fairly good results. The Aggies are much improved across the board and have been competitive in nearly all of their games this season. They have two competent quarterbacks in Matt Christian and Travaughn Colwell and enough of a run game (141.2 ypg) to keep opposing teams honest. BYU may be 7-3 but can hardly be considered an elite level team. Last week they crushed Idaho 42-7 but the Vandals were off a rare victory and showed absolutely no effort from the opening whistle. The Cougars are back with Jake Heaps at quarterback after Riley Nelson was hurt last game. They are both essentially the same player (Nelson more of a runner) in terms of production but the constant shuffling has created inconsistency and lack of continuity with the offense. And prior to the win over Idaho, BYU hadn’t posted a blowout win despite a Read more

Central Florida at BYU (5 pm PT - ESPN)

CRIS Current: BYU -2 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: BYU -3.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: BYU -2

Fairway Jay’s Betting Take: Both teams are off disappointing losses as favorites last week, but BYU was ambushed by rival Utah, 54-10. The Cougars are licking their wounds and have little offensive punch. Expect the struggles to continue against a strong UCF stop unit that sports the best pass defense in the nation. The Knights held Florida International to just 238 yards last week but came up short due to a fumble returned for a touchdown and a muffed punt. UCF outgained their first three foes and held them each to season-lows in offensive production. Head coach George O'Leary is 13-3 ATS on the road and 8-2 ATS as an underdog. They also boast a balanced Read more

College Football Handicapping: Rob Veno cut list for Saturday's card

These were the final four plays to get cut from Saturday’s college football card. You can pick up my top rated 20* for $49 or my entire card (eight plays) for $79 on my home page.

West Virginia/Maryland OVER 57.5 – In the end, the total just climbed to high for me to recommend. The ingredients are all there for this contest to be played at break neck pace with each offense now a bit more comfortable in their new offensive systems. Quarterbacks Geno Smith and Danny O’Brien can make plays but West Virginia’s ground game was stoned by Marshall’s defensive front and Maryland only scored 18 offensive points versus a suspension ravaged Miami (FL) defense. Getting over the total is still a real possibility but Read more

College Football Gambling: Offenses sluggish for BYU and Utah

Utah at BYU -4.5 O/U 47.5

News and notes on this weekend's Holy War between Utah and BYU. The Cougars enter 1-1 after two low-scoring games against Ole Miss and Texas. First-year offensive coordinator Brandon Doman has taken some heat for what looked to be some conservative play calling. Quarterback Jake Heaps is averaging only 5.5 yards per attempt and his longest completion on the season is 27 yards. Utah's Jordan Wynn hasn't fared much better with 4.9 ypa and a long pass of 30 yards. Still some speculation that Wynn's throwing shoulder is hindering his play. Last year's game (17-16 Utah win) was a defensive scrum with each team failing to top 300 yards in total offense. The Utes scored all of their points in the fourth quarter. Read more

NCAAF Betting Tips: BYU could thrive in new role of Independent

BYU Cougars
2010: 7-6 SU/ 8-5 ATS
Returning Starters: 10 off/5 def

Much has been made about BYU leaving the Mountain West Conference to become an Independent and I believe this inaugural season of flying solo has a chance to be special. The Cougars finished 7-6 in 2010 with a New Mexico Bowl victory over UTEP after opening the season with just one win in its first five games. The young Cougars struggled early with freshman quarterback Jake Heaps getting his feet under him against some tough competition. They however finished strong with five wins in six games, and the only loss coming in a fourth quarter collapse against rival Utah, 17-16.

Head coach Bronco Mendenhall took over the defense last year which yielded immediate improvements. Thirteen of the Cougs’ 16 interceptions came in their last five games and they finished ranked 32nd nationally in pass efficiency defense. They will add Daniel Sorensen to the secondary this year after missing the past two seasons on a church Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: BYU set to play as Independent

06.27.2011     12:27 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Lost in all of the conference realignments this offseason was BYU's decision to become an Independent. With schedules sometimes made a year or two in advance, the Cougars struggled to fill 12 slots. The end result was a challenging slate that features road games at Ole Miss, Texas, Oregon State and TCU as well as home dates against Utah and UCF.

Last year’s rough start (1-4 SU/ATS) created mid-season value and when the schedule got more manageable the Cougars closed on a 6-2 SU, 7-1 ATS run. This season, depending on the source, BYU returns as many as 17 starters, including 10 on offense. Quarterback Jake Heaps posted five straight 220+ yard games and a solid 13-2 TD-to-INT ratio to close out 2010. The competition level was considerably weaker (UNLV, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah, and UTEP) but Heaps is primed for success in this is sophomore season. Read more

BYU quarterback Nelson out for the year

09.21.2010     02:35 PM     Printer Friendly
Nevada -4 at BYU O/U 64

For those of you who wanted BYU to ditch its two-quarterback system your wish has been granted. Junior signal caller Riley Nelson will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. Nelson had been splitting time with Jake Heaps with neither producing much of anything through the first three games.

BYU quarterback controversy covers up defensive issues

09.13.2010     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The problem with a two-quarterback system isn't always the in-game performances but the attention it draws off the field when things don't go right. Prior to Week 1, the media had a field day with BYU’s choice to play two signal callers, sighting that historically it rarely works – which to a certain degree is true. But after the Cougars beat Washington in the season opener and both Jake Heaps and Riley Nelson performed well, critics were for the time silenced. But after last week's loss to Air Force in which both Heaps and Nelson struggled, the newswire was littered with recommendations to pick a true starter.

The reality is it was the first road game for two inexperienced quarterbacks. And the reason for using the tandem, especially early in the season, was likely that neither was ready to be a full-time starter – something teams throughout the country must deal with. Lost in last weekend's lackluster offensive performance, however, was an absolute defensive meltdown. Air Force racked up 409 yards on Read more

BYU two-quarterback system works for now

09.06.2010     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It was only one game but the two quarterback system at BYU seemed to work as Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps both put nearly identical numbers in the team's 23-17 win over Washington on Saturday. With no sacks or inteceptions, the Cougars got about as good a performance as they could have hoped for from the young duo. But the storyline of the game was BYU's defense which held the Huskies scoreless in the second half and kept wonderboy Jake Locker under wraps. This weekend, the BYU opens Mountain West play on the road against Air Force. The Cougars won last year's meeting 38-21. Max Hall threw for 377 yards as BYU outgained the Falcons by nearly 200 yards. Air Force is a 1-point favorite. As for the QB duo, it is far too early to assume long term production with this formula. In our opinion, it may be best to remain skeptical given the lack of historical success of a two QB system. Read more

BYU Cougars go with two QBs to start the season

08.27.2010     01:23 PM     Printer Friendly
Boy, that was anticlimactic. BYU just announced its quarterback competition has ended in what some like to call the kissing of one's sister, i.e. a tie. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall says Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps will share time. The Cougars are 3-point home favorite over Washington for Week 1.
