NFL Handicapping: Oakland players get extra practice with Palmer during bye week

10.27.2011     12:59 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This is probably a good idea. Oakland’s offensive skill position players decided it was best to stick around during the bye week and work on trying to help Carson Palmer not look like he spent the better part of the fall tailgating at USC games. Last week, Palmer replaced the always ineffective (expect during the fourth quarter of preseason games) Kyle Boller who tossed three picks. Not wanting to be outdone, Palmer answered with three of his own and completed only 8-of-21 passes. According to Palmer, the informal bye week practice in which coaches aren't allowed to be present, should be enough time for him to regain his mojo. The Raiders play host to Denver next week.

"Any time with your quarterback helps a lot," Heyward-Bey said. "We spent one week with Jason in the offseason, and so a week is big. Then (to get the) next week and get ready for Denver is even better."

NFL Handicapping: Oakland decides Carson Palmer is ready to start

Kansas City at Oakland -5.5 O/U 41.5

Well that didn't take long. Rather than wait until their upcoming bye week, the Oakland Raiders have decided to start quarterback Carson Palmer against Kansas City. This after Kyle Boller took snaps with the first team on Wednesday. We understand Oakland's thinking that Palmer is likely to be a more viable option over Boller in the long term but throwing him to the wolves on such short notice seems risky.

"I have some concerns," Jackson, whose 4-2 team hosts the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, told reporters after Palmer's first practice on Wednesday. "I kind of like it like that."

Kansas City at Oakland -4 O/U 41.5

Not currently trusting of Kyle Boller or Terrelle Pryor, the Oakland Raiders acquired former Cincinnati signal caller Carson Palmer to take over for the injured Jason Campbell. Palmer wasn't exactly an elite player prior to his "retirement" from the Bengals – the freakin' 4-2 Bengals might we add! It doesn't look like Palmer will start this weekend (though no official word) against the Chiefs which means Boller could be in charge of handing off the Darren McFadden 62 times. Oakland has a bye week following Sunday's game, which makes November 6 vs. Denver a Read more

NFL Handicapping: Oakland Raiders at Denver Broncos

Oakland +7.5 at Denver O/U 42.5

A Sunday divisional showdown in Denver, where the Broncos (2-4) will try to bounce back following a tough 24-20 home loss the Jets last week. This line has gone from 6 to 9 and now down to 7.5 with the announcement that Oakland QB Jason Campbell (knee) will start after it was presumed third string QB Kyle Boller would make his first start for the Raiders (2-4).

Denver is the only AFC team not to have played a division game yet. The Broncos are dead last in running the football this season, averaging just 67 yards per game and a woeful 2.7 yards per rush. They are being outgained on the ground by an average of 60 yards per game. The Broncos did manage to run for 145 yards last week against the Jets for their highest rushing output of the season, and you would expect them to try to establish the run more against the Raiders poor run defense allowing 149 yards per game and Read more

Gradkowski slated to play against 49ers

08.26.2010     08:55 AM     Printer Friendly
Oakland quarterback Bruce Gradkowski is expected to play in Saturday's home contest against San Francisco. Gradkowski has been recovering from ligament tears in both knees. That leaves the Raiders with a formidable trio of Jason Campbell, Kyle Boller and Gradkowski. Oakland will be playing its first home game of the preseason, something that head coach Tom Cable said the team is looking forward to. The Raiders, a 1-point home favorite this weekend, play the 49ers in Week 6 of the regular season. San Fran put up 18 fourth quarter points in last year's 21-20 Week 2 preseason victory.

Brennan will see action; Bears sign Gutierrez

08.19.2010     09:58 AM     Printer Friendly
Don't bank on seeing as much of Oakland quarterback Kyle Boller as you did last week against the Cowboys. Boller, who engineered two fourth quarter touchdown drives in the win and played almost three quarters, expects to give up some of his time to recently signed Colt Brennan. The former Hawaii product did not play last week but will see action against Chicago. Head coach Tom Cable has yet to announce and exact rotation.   Chicago meanwhile will be without backup Caleb Hanie (shoulder) and signed Matt Gutierrez to serve as the team's No. 3. Gutierrez may end up taking some snaps, especially if Dan LeFevour continues to struggle.

The Bears are 1-point home favorites.

Thursday NFL Preseason Betting Notes

New Orleans at New England
Saints Coach Sean Payton said the staff was still finalizing the game plan for Thursday night and that snap count rather than time will be the deciding factor in how long the starters play.

"We'll take a look at the snaps. We always play maybe a quarter - somewhere around 15 to 18 plays," he said. "Generally one group will get more reps in the first quarter and you might have to keep the other group in a little longer to get the snaps even. Then the seconds will get into the third quarter and we'll make a change again with the thirds." Three quarterbacks will see time and it remained unclear whether Sean Canfield, the team's seventh-round draft pick out of Oregon State, will be under center. "Drew (Brees) will get 'X' number of snaps and we'll see how the offense is doing, " Payton said. "Patrick (Ramsey) will come Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Talk: Trushel, Rynning, Veno and Crow

08.06.2010     01:15 PM     Printer Friendly
Tim Trushel, Rob Veno, Erin Rynning and Brent Crow discuss their thoughts on how to handicap the NFL Preseason.

What do you look for with back-up quarterbacks in the preseason?
Quarterbacks who are unknown to most bettors. Guys who were drafted late or signed as free agents and played for non-boarded college teams. You often times see a handful of these guys every preseason; good size, physical tools, big arm, etc. There was a guy named Perry Klein who played for Atlanta back in the mid-1990s. He came out of a small school (CW Post) and was a killer in preseason but never played in the regular season (one career passing attempt). Tony Romo is a prime example of someone few if any had heard of. This season, Jacksonville has a kid named Trevor Harris who is 6-3, 235 lbs. and played at a Division II school (Edinboro). It is unlikely he'll ever amount to anything but with all of the high-profile schools and quarterbacks in the country, if someone that obscure is taking snaps then it means he has Read more

With NFL preseason just around the corner, I thought I would take a look at some of the quarterbacks and rotations we will be seeing on the field this year. Obviously playing time will vary from week to week and team to team so information leading up to a game is critical.

TOP 5 (In no particular order)

Cleveland Browns (Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace, Colt McCoy, Brett Ratliff)
Delhomme has something to prove after his move from Carolina, Wallace is one of the best preseason quarterbacks in recent memory, and Ratliff had some preseason success with the Jets as well. It’s McCoy’s playmaking ability and athleticism that will make him a dangerous matchup against 4th and 5th string defenses.

Miami Dolphins (Chad Henne, Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen, Pat White)
The two Chads are proven QBs in this offense and Thigpen is a great preseason quarterback, especially late in games. Pat White should also thrive Read more
