MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Los Angeles Angels at Oakland A's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Richards) at Oakland (Parker) -105 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Oakland

My clients and I cashed a winner betting against the Angels on Sunday, as Seattle rallied from behind to steal a 2-1 victory over slumping LA.  We cashed a winner betting against the Angels on Monday in their disastrous 19 inning loss highlighted by multiple bullpen breakdowns.  And there’s absolutely no reason to think that the Angels are going to snap out of their season long funk as their road trip continues in Oakland tonight.

Mike Scioscia’s squad has lost six of their last eight, plagued by the same problems they’ve had all year – mediocre starting pitching, a bullpen that can’t close games and a lineup that’s struggling to create clutch hits.  Expect more of the same here!

LA’s quotes following last night’s six and half hour marathon speak volumes about their level of frustration right now, a team that’s Read more

LA Angels (Hanson) at Oakland (Straily) -130 O/U 8
Recommendation: Oakland

I’ve been actively fading Tommy Hanson in the month of April. He has struggled in nearly every start and even though his last outing against Detroit looked good on paper, don’t be fooled for a second! Hanson labored immensely allowing six hits in six innings along with just two strikeouts and four walks on 102 pitches. He didn’t allow a run because the Tigers offense was inept that night. They had runners on base in nearly every inning but failed to get that one big, clutch hit with RISP to knock Hanson out of the game early. For the season Hanson has a 4.24 ERA and a porous 1.53 WHIP with a mediocre 8-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He could be in trouble tonight against an Oakland lineup that pounded out nine runs on 12 hits in a confidence boosting come from behind 9-8 win against Baltimore on Sunday. It’s worth noting that Hanson is coming off the bereavement list after the recent death of Read more

LA Angels (Blanton) at Seattle (Hernandez) -155 O/U 7
Recommendation: Over

It’s certainly not hard to make the case for a Joe Blanton pitched game to go Over the total.  All four of his previous starts have produced ten combined runs or more.

Blanton isn’t missing many bats these days, allowing a whopping 38 hits (including six homers) in just 20.2 innings of work.  His next quality start will be his first of the season.  The Angels bullpen behind him has been ‘suspect’ at best, ‘atrocious’ at worst.

King Felix has a well-deserved reputation as an elite level hurler.  But when Hernandez faces off against the Angels, a lineup that has seen his stuff literally dozens of times, his track record is downright lousy!  Hernandez faced LA five times last year.  He notched only one quality start in those five outings, going 0-3 with a 6.25 ERA and a .313 batting average against – ugly Read more

Oakland (Milone) +113 at LA Angels (Blanton) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Oakland

Joe Blanton, nor the struggling 2-5 LA Angels, are a difficult choice to fade as favorites right now. Blanton was not good in his first start of the season allowing five runs and three homers in just five innings at Cincinnati. I’m not ready to trust Blanton here against a hot Oakland Athletics squad that has won six games in a row. And unlike LA, who has scored four runs or less in five of their first seven games, the A’s are scoring runs in bunches with six or more in each game during this stretch. The Angels bullpen has also struggled quite a bit with a 4.18 ERA (25th in MLB). Coupled with Blanton, that should give Oakland plenty of run scoring opportunities.

Oakland lefty Tommy Milone was a very strict home/road dichotomy pitcher in 2012 notching a 2.74 ERA at home but a 4.83 ERA on the road. However it must be mentioned that his one road start against the Angels was one of Read more

MLB Betting News: LA's CJ Wilson continues downward trend

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland (Parker) at LA Angels (Wilson) -150 O/U 7.5

Article on CJ Wilson's inconsistencies since joining the Los Angeles Angels. Last season, after the All-Star break, Wilson posted a 5.54 ERA and went 11 straight starts without a win. In his first start this season Wilson allowed three earned runs, walked four, and fanned four in six innings of work at Cincinnati. According to FanGraphs, Wilson's average fastball velocity was about 90 mph vs. the Reds – lower than any start he made in 2012.

"What's kind of puzzling is that's what you might see with some guys who are not as multidimensional as C.J.," Scioscia said. "Guys who are one- or two-dimensional — say they only throw a sinker and slider — the second time hitters see them, they can't go to other things. But C.J. has so many things he can do, he should be Read more

MLB Handicapping: Angels' Hanson makes American League debut

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Hanson) at Texas (Harrison) -125 O/U 9.5

Keep an eye on Los Angeles' Tommy Hanson as he makes his American League debut this afternoon in Texas. Hanson struggled with back problems and a drop in velocity last year. And during the spring he was pulled from a start due to the tight tricep. In his last spring training outing he went 6.1 innings, struck out six and walked four (93 pitches).

Kansas City (Smith) at LA Angels (Richards) -175 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

The betting markets aren’t used to seeing totals of 9 hung at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, a notoriously pitcher friendly ballpark.  LA’s highest posted total through their first 44 home games was 8.5.  We saw the first 9 of the season in Saturday’s matinee against Texas, with the struggling Ervin Santana on the hill for LA matching up against the inconsistent Yu Darvish.  Bettors cashed that Over with relative ease after eight runs were scored in the first three innings.

Tonight, we’re seeing the second 9 of the season in LA, and the betting markets are pounding the Under in morning trading.  I don’t agree with that move.  The Angels lineup is on fire right now, finally living up to the expectations from their massive payroll. They’ve scored 53 runs in their last nine games, just shy of six runs per contest, going 6-2-1 to the Over in the Read more

MLB Gambling Free Pick: Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re going to look under the total here which is currently posted at 8.5. Despite the seven run outburst by Baltimore against slumping Angels RH Garrett Richards, have to figure they’ll return to their extended poor offensive production tonight. Prior to last night, the O’s had posted a .200/.287/.592 line in the last 18 contests with game batting averages of .233 or below in 15 of those.

With red-hot LA lefty C.J. Wilson on the hill (seven quality starts in his last eight outings), don’t expect Baltimore to generate much with the bats. Wilson’s 1.07 WHIP, 1.35 ERA and 1 HR allowed over this current 53 1/3 inning stretch combined with his mastery of this group of Orioles sticks (only 2 combined RBI in 52 at bats against him) adds up to a strong performance tonight.

Taking the hill for the Orioles is 28 year old, righty Miguel Gonzalez who is from nearby San Fernando and will be making a homecoming in front of friends and family. Look for Gonzalez to be pumped up for this spot start which Manager Buck Showalter will be watching closely to see what he has. Showalter has given a pitch limit of 100 so Gonzalez has an opportunity Read more

MLB Betting Alert: Markets looking to fade Cueto and Haren

07.03.2012     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly
Two pretty big market moves on today's MLB slate. Cincinnati and Johnny Cueto opened -155 at CRIS and -135 at Pinnacle against Los Angeles and Chris Capuano. The Reds are now around a -117 road favorite. LA's Dan Haren has really struggled of late (20 earned runs last four starts) and yet opened as a -133 road favorite at Pinnacle. He's been bet down to as low as -111 against Cleveland and Zach McAllister. Line history courtesy of 5Dimes.
