NFL Handicapping: Chicago's Cutler upgraded to probable vs. Minnesota

Minnesota at Chicago

Reports indicate that Chicago's Jay Cutler is likely to play this Sunday against Minnesota. Still no line on the game as of Friday morning.

"I know you all want to know about Jay Cutler. He was able to do some things on a limited basis," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "So it's looking better for (him) to get him back on the football field."

Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Dallas -2 O/U 44.5
CRIS Current: Dallas -2 O/U 45.5
Rob Veno's Power Ratings: Carolina -3

Since their blowout win over the Giants on the opening night of the season, the Cowboys are 1-3 SU, their lone victory coming in non-covering fashion at home against Tampa Bay.  Dallas’ weaknesses during this slump have been on full display.  DeMarcus Ware has six sacks, but the rest of the team has combined for only four – opposing QBs have time to throw without a strong Cowboys pass rush.  And DC Rob Ryan’s insistence on using aggressive blitzing tactics in third-and-long situations has burned them repeatedly; unable to get off the field on third downs.  With top draft choice CB Morris Claiborne questionable with an ankle injury, that may be a continuing problem again this week.

Chicago Bears
The Bears were two completely different teams in 2011. The “good” Bears went 7-3 to open up the campaign. The “bad” Bears went 1-5 to close out the season after a bevy of injuries decimated their roster, most notably the season ender to starting QB Jay Cutler. Chicago finished the season with an 8-8 SU and 8-8 ATS mark while going 9-7 to the Over. They were outgained by 0.3 yards per play and finished with a +2 turnover margin against a much tougher than average slate of opponents.

Washington at Chicago -1 O/U 37

Because of a wet field the Chicago Bears played it cautious in Week 1 with some of their top players. Lovie Smith – one of the least trustable coaches in the league when it comes to preseason info – claims more emphasis will be placed on tonight's game vs. Washington. Smith said some starters will play the entire first half.

“We didn’t play as well as we needed to last time,” Bears coach Lovie Smith admitted. “So we’re anxious to play a good Washington team that got a win last week.”

Denver at Chicago -3 O/U 34.5

Good preview of tonight's Denver at Chicago preseason opener.

“It’s serious business out there on Thursday,” Peyton Manning said. “There’s jobs being competed for, there’s jobs that people are trying to keep. That’s where all of us have something to play for. Sure, you want to win the game, but everybody’s competing, trying to do their jobs well.”

“You don’t play the game to hurt anyone, but it’s a physical game,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “Our pass rushers want to get to the quarterback, whoever he is.”

Chicago at Denver -3.5 O/U 36

Despite allowing just two touchdowns their last two games, the Chicago Bears managed to lose twice and will be without running back Matt Forte for at least a few games. Forte hurt his knee in the first quarter of Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Chiefs. Head coach Lovie Smith said Forte "looked pretty good" at practice on Monday but he is not expected to play this weekend against Denver. Quarterback Caleb Hanie was overwhelmed for a second straight week, completing only 46% of his passes and tossing three interceptions. Rumors circulating that Chicago is looking to bring in a veteran – Donovan McNabb or even...Brett freakin' Farve! Smith Read more

NFL Gambling: Lovie Smith says players felt disrespected by pointspread

11.08.2011     08:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following last night's 30-24 win over Philadelphia, Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith noted that his team shouldn't have been 8-point underdogs

"We're a good football team," Smith said after his team's 30-24 victory. "Just not getting a whole lot of respect.

"When you go on the road ... and you're ... the Chicago Bears shouldn't be eight-point underdogs when we come and play a team. And the guys took notice of that."

"I don't get involved in the spread or what the media says," Cutler said. "We knew they're a good football team. They're well-coached and have really good players."

Saturday NFL Preseason Betting News and Notes

Betting news, notes and links for Saturday's NFL Preseason games.

Cleveland Browns - First-year head coach Pat Shurmur said the starters will play a full quarter against the Packers. The Browns are switching to the West Coast offense as well as a 4-3 defense.

“It’s important that we learn a lot about our team, our whole team,” Shurmur said. “I think most teams approach it this way. Whether you’re a guy that’s lined up as a first-teamer, second-teamer or a guy fighting to make the team, every rep is valuable.

"We take these games very seriously and to start the year out against an opponent like the Super Bowl champs will be a good gauge. The twos will get in for a couple quarters. The rest of the guys will play in the fourth quarter.”

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL win total market got off to a very late start this season, without a single sportsbook around the globe hanging numbers until the last week of July. But since the lockout ended, with the flurry of trades and free agent signings over the past ten days, we’ve seen win totals start to pop up at key sportsbooks both here in Las Vegas and offshore. In Vegas, the MGM Grand, the M Resort (Cantor Gaming) and the Hilton have all posted their season win totals for the 2011 campaign. The early action has been fast and furious!

The NFL win total market is not particularly complex. We don’t see many head fakes, where bettors bet in the wrong direction early, hoping to take advantage of a bad market number down the road once that same number is copied by other books. Rather, the early money tends to be a very good indicator of where the late money is going to come. Barring an injury related disaster, the teams that are taking over money now will continue to take over money into September, and vice versa. These lines Read more

Buffalo at Chicago -3 O/U 34.5

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said the starters may get more snaps than normal during Sunday's preseason home opener against Buffalo. A lot of discussion in the media about Soldier Field's playing surface and the grass not being up to snuff. Some of the players would prefer FieldTurf but management said they will go with grass for the 2011-12 campaign.

“We’ve talked about that. I haven’t come to a conclusion about that, but we have talked about playing them a little bit more,” Smith said after a shortened practice Monday. “And especially after you miss a day like today ... We need to kind of make up for Read more
