NCAA Tournament Gambling: Arizona's Miller and Ohio State's Matta go way back

Arizona vs. Ohio State -3.5 O/U 134

You couldn’t find two teams from different conferences that would be as familiar with what the other wants to do more than Arizona and Ohio State. Why is that, you might ask? Head coaches Sean Miller of Arizona and Thad Matta of Ohio State go back over two decades as friends and associates. They were assistants together at both Miami-Ohio and Arizona and Matta gave Miller a gig when he first took over as head coach of Xavier.

When Matta left Xavier for Ohio State his job went to Miller who eventually parlayed his solid run of success with the Musketeers into his current gig at Arizona. These two guys know each other well, they share many of the same philosophies and tactics and they have rosters that really mirror one another. And this isn’t the first time they’ve met in the NCAA Tournament: Who could forget the epic overtime thriller between Xavier and Ohio State back in 2006-07? Miller and the Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 12 California Golden Bears vs. No. 5 UNLV Rebels

NCAA Tournament - Midwest Region
Thursday, 4:25 pm PT, at San Jose, Calif.
No. 12 California vs. No. 5 UNLV
CRIS Opener: UNLV -2.5 O.U 132
CRIS Current: UNLV -2.5 O/U 131
Recommendation: California

There are a couple oddities surrounding this game that I certainly wouldn’t expect to see very often in the “second” round of the NCAA Tournament. Firstly this is a non-conference rematch of a regular season game between these two squads and secondly it’s a virtual home game for a No. 12 seed. In yet another strange twist Cal was originally drawn as a No. 11 seed only to be moved down due to logistical reasons according to the selection committee! The Golden Bears were defeated at home in the first meeting on a last second tip-in by UNLV; this despite the fact that the Rebels had lost their best player at the time – Mike Moser – to a dislocated elbow. Is revenge in the air or can UNLV muster that same strength Read more

Big XII Tournament Betting Preview

Big XII Tournament Preview

The Big XII Tournament will get under way Wednesday evening at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO. Arrivals and departures over the past couple of seasons have transformed the conference entirely. Once a solid top two or three power conference I’d say they’ve dropped a few spots with their current roster. Texas and West Virginia’s struggles this season have certainly been a big reason for the drop but losing solid contributors like Texas A&M, Missouri and Colorado while adding TCU really hurts (at least for basketball). Still there is some quality here with Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Oklahoma all ranked in the top 50 in KenPom’s rankings and all five having a legit claim at a berth in the NCAA Tournament. One more team, Baylor, could potentially sneak in to the Big Dance with a deep run to the finals. I don’t see any of the bottom four – Texas, WVU, Texas Tech or TCU – making a championship run so at max I see the Big XII as a five- or six-bid league. Kansas has been a historically dominant force in this tournament having won five of the last seven Read more

Super Bowl XLVII Prop Bet Recommendation: Ray Lewis total tackles

Submitted by Otto Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ray Lewis solo tackles + special teams solo tackles + assisted tackles
Recommendation: Over 10.5 (-165 at LVH)

It’s important to note in this bet that LVH does not count sacks toward the total. You should check to see whether or not they count if you play it at another shop. Having said that, Lewis doesn’t get many sacks anyway (just one this season to date) so it shouldn’t be a factor one way or another.

Lewis played just six regular season games thanks to a serious triceps injury but he was very productive in those six games. In his final regular season appearance he racked up a combined 14 solo and assisted tackles. In his three-game stint since coming back from injury here in the playoffs he’s racked up a combined 34 solo and assisted tackles and has obliterated the 10.5 number we see here in all three games. And San Francisco, with their ground and pound between the tackles style running, should play right into our hands with this bet and give Lewis plenty of opportunities to rack up stops.

This is the perfect complement to our Read more

Super Bowl XLVII Prop Bet Recommendation: Frank Gore Rushing Attempts

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Frank Gore Rushing Attempts
Recommendation: Over 19.5 (-105) @ 5Dimes

Frank Gore is a workhorse for the 49ers, plain and simple. Their preferred method of attack is to pound the football on the ground and San Francisco has arguably the best offensive line in NFL so that method makes perfect sense. Based on season long numbers this prop might seem like it’s priced high at first glance but don’t let those season long numbers cloud your view.

Gore didn’t have the heaviest workload during the regular season as head coach Jim Harbaugh routinely spelled him with Kendall Hunter. But Hunter went down with a knee injury and hasn’t played since Week 12. Let’s look at Gore’s workload pre and post Hunter injury…

While in the rotation with Hunter in Weeks 1 through 12 Gore had just two 20 carry games. Since Hunter went down Gore had three 20 carry games in the final five weeks of the regular season and two 20 carry games so far here in the playoffs. That’s five 20 or more carry games in the last seven weeks! We can put an asterisk next to one of the games during this seven week run where Gore Read more

GoDaddy.com Bowl - Mobile, Ala.
Sunday, January 6, 6 pm PT - ESPN
Arkansas State vs. Kent State
CRIS Opener:
Arkansas State -3 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Arkansas State -4 O/U 61
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arkansas State -0.5

The last of the mid major bowls kicks off on Sunday, the final game of what should be an exciting day’s worth of football. While it’s definitely not as exciting as the NFL Playoffs, as a standalone primetime game it should garner some attention. The GoDaddy.com Bowl takes place in Mobile which is notorious for its rain —in fact it’s the wettest city in the United States—but the preliminary forecast calls for a dry evening so totals bettors shouldn’t have to worry about poor conditions.

Both Arkansas State and Kent State like to run the football. The Golden Flashes rank 15th in the country in rushing yards per Read more

Outback Bowl Betting Preview: Michigan Wolverines vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

Outback Bowl - Tampa, Fla.
Tuesday, January 1, 10 am PT - ESPN
Michigan vs. South Carolina
CRIS Opener:
South Carolina -3.5 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: South Carolina -4.5 O/U 47.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: South Carolina -3.5

The Outback Bowl is where we typically see the third or fourth best offerings from the Big Ten and SEC. It has quality teams but not always supremely motivated teams despite the New Year’s Day kickoff.

Breaking down the fundamental matchups may prove a little tricky. Michigan ranks as one of the better defenses in the country and coordinator Greg Mattison has garnered a lot of praise for turning this stop unit around. I wonder if they’re a bit of a paper tiger though. Yes the Wolverines rank 10th in total defense, 2nd in passing defense, and 16th in scoring defense nationally but the backbone of those rankings were built against the Read more

Ohio vs. Louisiana-Monroe
CRIS Opener:
UL-Monroe -6.5 O/U 61
CRIS Current: UL-Monroe -7 O/U 61
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UL-Monroe -7

My alma mater, Ohio University, returns to a bowl game for the fourth straight year after securing the program’s first ever bowl victory in 2011. This was a team widely expected to compete for and win the MAC conference. As we’ll discuss in the coming paragraphs those expectations looked to be spot on early on in the season but eventually went up in smoke.

Ohio returned a core group of 15 starters from a 10-win team in 2011 that included one of the MAC’s more dynamic quarterbacks, a solid offensive line and a stout defense. They went on the road and upset Penn State in Week 1 which would spark a seven-game win streak to begin the season as they Read more
