College Football Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers at Northwestern Wildcats

Nebraska at Northwestern
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - BTN
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -6 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -7.5 O/U 48
Recommendation: Nebraska

Big Ten gets underway on Saturday as the Northwestern Wildcats host the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Last week, our free play selection cashed as Northwestern picked up its first victory of the season with a 24-13 win over Duke. Tied 7-7 at halftime, the Wildcats finally were able to get their offense going with 17 second half points. They finished with 320 passing yards (8.2 per play) and for the first time all year topped the 400 total yardage barrier. Now they will face a Nebraska squad coming off of a massive 35-32 home win over Oregon. The Huskers used a balance attack of passing and rushing to work over a suspect Ducks’ defense. They also picked up some big plays on special teams, notably De'Mourney Pearson-El's punt return at the end of the first half that led to a TD to help rally back from an initial 20-7 deficit. Oregon didn't help its cause with 13 penalties for 126 yards.

Last year’s meeting saw Northwestern pick up a close 30-28 Read more

Oregon at Nebraska
Saturday, 12:30 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -3 O/U 70.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -3 O/U 74.5
Recommendation: Oregon

If you look at the final scores of Nebraska’s first two games, this pointspread might make sense.  After all, the Huskers are coming off back-to-back dominating wins and covers against Fresno and Wyoming over the last two weeks, covering as a home favorite for the first times since a Week 2 win over South Alabama last year.

There’s only one problem with that assumption.  Nebraska didn’t dominate either game.  Both blowouts were completely fraudulent.  And Oregon’s team speed will be highly problematic for a Cornhuskers defense that hasn’t seen playmakers like these in year – they haven’t faced Ohio State or Michigan in Big Ten play in either of the past two seasons.

In Week 1, Nebraska entered the fourth quarter against Freson clinging to a 21-10 lead, but a pair of Bulldogs interceptions set up the Huskers down the stretch as they punched in three unanswered touchdowns in the Read more

Foster Farms Bowl Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. UCLA Bruins

Foster Farms Bowl - Santa Clara, CA
Nebraska vs. UCLA
Saturday, December 26, 6:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
UCLA -6 O/U 60
CRIS Current: UCLA -6.5 O/U 61
Recommendation: Over

Nebraska was extremely fortunate to end up in the postseason with a 5-7 record. Detractors may be up in arms but if anything, it could motivation for Mike Riley’s squad to prove folks wrong. UCLA limped to an 8-4 finish including a sloppy (-3 turnover margin) 40-21 loss to USC in the regular season finale.

Offensively, Nebraska was sneaky good as it finished second in the Big Ten at 442 ypg at over 6 yards per play. When not turning the ball over (16 INTs) Tommy Armstrong Jr. was a capable passer who spread the ball around to a number of solid receivers including Jordan Westerkamp who hauled in 63 catches. They match up well against a UCLA defense that was a mess most of the season thanks to cluster injuries. It all started when LB Myles Jack was lost for the season with a knee injury back in late September while DT Eddie Vanderdoes and CB Fabian Moreau were also lost to injury. The Bruins' stop unit never Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL teams starting to change their stripes

11.23.2015     11:41 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s Week 12 already. Thanksgiving is upon us, with the holiday season right behind it.  All the NFL Bye weeks are in the rear view mirror now, with every team still having exactly six games remaining in the regular season.  We’re seeing numerous ‘morphs’ around the league; teams that have changed their stripes rather dramatically over the course of the last month.

Some of those morphs are duly noted by the betting markets.  For example, the 3-7 Cowboys with a healthy Tony Romo are favored over the 10-0 Panthers on Thanksgiving Day, with the betting markets reacting to the Cowboys positive showing with Tony Romo back behind center this past Sunday.  The markets certainly aren’t sleeping on Dallas right now!

But what about the Lions, winners of two straight since their woeful 1-7 start?  Or the Falcons, now just 1-4 in their last five games; struggling on both sides of the football?  The Jets aren’t the same team now that they were a month ago, especially if the injuries to shutdown corner Darrelle Revis and Pro Bowl caliber center Nick Mangold don’t heal quickly.  Should we Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oregon State Beavers at Utah Utes

Oregon State at Utah
Saturday, 4 pm PT - PAC-12 Network
CRIS Opener:
Utah -23.5 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Utah -23 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Oregon State

Prior to last week's game against USC, Utah's defense had looked as good as any in the PAC-12. The Utes held the high powered offenses of Oregon, Arizona State, and California to less that 21 ppg. And even though they allowed 42 to the Trojans, keep in mind Utah coughed up the football four times and allowed a pick six. For the game, USC averaged a modest 5.14 yards per play. Back at home, I expect Utah to revert back to it's staunch defensive ways.

Oregon State is a bad football team that last week missed out on a rare opportunity for a win in a 17-13 home loss to Colorado. The Beavers held the Buffs to 4.82 ypp but prior to that had allowed over 7 ypp in three straight games. I'm not sure Gary Andersen is the long term solution in Corvallis. It almost feels like OSU hired him because he had many of the same attributes as former head coach Mike Riley.

But as easy as it is the rail on Oregon State, we need to talk about this Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Tennessee Volunteers

Oklahoma at Tennessee
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -1 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -1.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Oklahoma

Impressive pointspread covering wins posted by each of these teams last week leads into critical early season affair. Bandwagons have been hitched to both Oklahoma and Tennessee since spring practice with the Vols a sexy pick to contend in the SEC East.

Despite the fact that these teams combined to win their respective Week 1games by a combined 100-34 score it stands to reason there were portions of both playbooks that were saved for this matchup. Conference affiliation means next to nothing here since personnel gap in size and speed is slim to none. Matchups inside the schemes, execution of plays, special teams, and number of breaks are going to be the difference makers here so let’s take a look at the on field fundamentals.

Bob Stoops brought in “Air Raid” guru Lincoln Riley to be the Sooners’ new offensive coordinator with games like this in mind. The 32-year-old Riley learned under Mike Leach while at Texas Read more

College Football Betting Preview: BYU Cougars at Nebraska Cornhuskers

BYU at Nebraska
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -6 O/U 65
CRIS Current: Nebraska -7 O/U 63
Recommendation: BYU

A lot of mystery with this matchup as both BYU and Nebraska have suspended multiple players yet neither school, as of Wednesday, has revealed who exactly they are. Reports indicate the Cougars could be without one of their top pass rushers and starting center but again, nothing has been made official.

As for the game, the main storyline is Nebraska's coaching turnover. Despite only one winning regular season since 2010, former Oregon State coach Mike Riley was hired to replace Bo Pelini who won nine or 10 games in all seven seasons in Lincoln. Riley brought win him both OC Danny Langsford and DC Mark Banker. Riley's a good coach and didn't have the resources in Corvallis Pelini was afforded. However I have questions whether or not Riley can get Nebraska to the "next level." I tend to downgrade teams following such mass offseason changes, especially to start the season. Personnel and talent-wise, the Cornhuskers (15 returning starters) appear to be on Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The Curious Case of the Philadelphia Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s not hard to predict which NFL teams are going to be the betting favorites coming into the campaign.  Look no further than the NFL Season Win Totals markets.  Just about all of the top teams – teams lined at nine wins or higher – have one commonality.  In a quarterback’s league, they all have top tier quarterbacks.

Baltimore has Joe Flacco.  Dallas has Tony Romo.  Denver has Peyton Manning.  Green Bay has Aaron Rodgers.  Indianapolis has Andrew Luck.  New England has Tom Brady.  New Orleans has Drew Brees.  Seattle has Russell Wilson.  That’s eight of the ten teams that are lined at 9 wins or higher this year; all squad with elite level quarterbacks.  Miami, with the promising Ryan Tannehill firmly entrenched as the starting QB, is lined at nine wins in many locations as well (8.5 with juice to the over in others).

And then there’s Philadelphia, lined at 9.5 wins in most locations.  The Eagles have Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez battling for the starting job.  With Bradford – their big offseason pickup and the former #1 overall draft choice from 2010 Read more

College Football Gambling: Nebraska preps for Holiday Bowl in wake of Pelini's departure

12.11.2014     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nebraska is one of many teams heading into its bowl game with an interim head coach at the helm. Bo Pelini was recently fired and replaced by former Oregon State head coach Mike Riley. Assistant Barney Cotton will coach the team's Holiday Bowl matchup vs. USC (Dec. 27). The Cornhuskers are of course saying all the right things despite being fairly bitter over Pelini's dismissal. It is also uncertain whether any of the current staff will be retained.

“I really have a very simple job,” Cotton said. “That’s to help our players finish out the best way and help this coaching staff stay cohesive and united and keep loving each other.”

“They definitely want us to finish right,” Mitchell said. “We’re a competitive bunch and that’s one thing we preach. For us to have one more game, especially against an opponent we’re going to play, who wouldn’t want that? It’s not a huge BCS bowl game, but the opponent is a big name
