College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Tennessee Volunteers

Oklahoma at Tennessee
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -1 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -1.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Oklahoma

Impressive pointspread covering wins posted by each of these teams last week leads into critical early season affair. Bandwagons have been hitched to both Oklahoma and Tennessee since spring practice with the Vols a sexy pick to contend in the SEC East.

Despite the fact that these teams combined to win their respective Week 1games by a combined 100-34 score it stands to reason there were portions of both playbooks that were saved for this matchup. Conference affiliation means next to nothing here since personnel gap in size and speed is slim to none. Matchups inside the schemes, execution of plays, special teams, and number of breaks are going to be the difference makers here so let’s take a look at the on field fundamentals.

Bob Stoops brought in “Air Raid” guru Lincoln Riley to be the Sooners’ new offensive coordinator with games like this in mind. The 32-year-old Riley learned under Mike Leach while at Texas Read more

College Football Betting Preview: BYU Cougars at Nebraska Cornhuskers

BYU at Nebraska
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -6 O/U 65
CRIS Current: Nebraska -7 O/U 63
Recommendation: BYU

A lot of mystery with this matchup as both BYU and Nebraska have suspended multiple players yet neither school, as of Wednesday, has revealed who exactly they are. Reports indicate the Cougars could be without one of their top pass rushers and starting center but again, nothing has been made official.

As for the game, the main storyline is Nebraska's coaching turnover. Despite only one winning regular season since 2010, former Oregon State coach Mike Riley was hired to replace Bo Pelini who won nine or 10 games in all seven seasons in Lincoln. Riley brought win him both OC Danny Langsford and DC Mark Banker. Riley's a good coach and didn't have the resources in Corvallis Pelini was afforded. However I have questions whether or not Riley can get Nebraska to the "next level." I tend to downgrade teams following such mass offseason changes, especially to start the season. Personnel and talent-wise, the Cornhuskers (15 returning starters) appear to be on Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The Curious Case of the Philadelphia Eagles

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
It’s not hard to predict which NFL teams are going to be the betting favorites coming into the campaign.  Look no further than the NFL Season Win Totals markets.  Just about all of the top teams – teams lined at nine wins or higher – have one commonality.  In a quarterback’s league, they all have top tier quarterbacks.

Baltimore has Joe Flacco.  Dallas has Tony Romo.  Denver has Peyton Manning.  Green Bay has Aaron Rodgers.  Indianapolis has Andrew Luck.  New England has Tom Brady.  New Orleans has Drew Brees.  Seattle has Russell Wilson.  That’s eight of the ten teams that are lined at 9 wins or higher this year; all squad with elite level quarterbacks.  Miami, with the promising Ryan Tannehill firmly entrenched as the starting QB, is lined at nine wins in many locations as well (8.5 with juice to the over in others).

And then there’s Philadelphia, lined at 9.5 wins in most locations.  The Eagles have Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez battling for the starting job.  With Bradford – their big offseason pickup and the former #1 overall draft choice from 2010 Read more

College Football Gambling: Nebraska preps for Holiday Bowl in wake of Pelini's departure

12.11.2014     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Nebraska is one of many teams heading into its bowl game with an interim head coach at the helm. Bo Pelini was recently fired and replaced by former Oregon State head coach Mike Riley. Assistant Barney Cotton will coach the team's Holiday Bowl matchup vs. USC (Dec. 27). The Cornhuskers are of course saying all the right things despite being fairly bitter over Pelini's dismissal. It is also uncertain whether any of the current staff will be retained.

“I really have a very simple job,” Cotton said. “That’s to help our players finish out the best way and help this coaching staff stay cohesive and united and keep loving each other.”

“They definitely want us to finish right,” Mitchell said. “We’re a competitive bunch and that’s one thing we preach. For us to have one more game, especially against an opponent we’re going to play, who wouldn’t want that? It’s not a huge BCS bowl game, but the opponent is a big name

Oregon State at USC
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
USC -10 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: USC -9.5 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: USC -10
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Over

The USC Trojans will be looking to bounce back strong following their bye week as they host Oregon State in this PAC-12 matchup. It’s the first game for USC since its shocking 37-31 loss at Boston College which should provide a requisite level of focus and intensity. USC was shredded for 506 total yards (425 of them on the ground) by Boston College and I expect the defense to perform better this week with extra time to prepare. But Oregon State’s offense should still be able to score some points with senior quarterback Sean Mannion at the controls. Mannion has had another good start to the season throwing for 301 ypg and 8 yppa and Oregon State should benefit from having more balance in their offense this Read more

College Football Handicapping: Week 10 Injury Report

10.30.2013     11:18 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by blog entry.
For Thursday’s AAC matchup vs. South Florida, Houston RB Ryan Jackson is ‘questionable’ after possibly sustaining a concussion in last week’s 49-14 win at Rutgers. Jackson has rushed 95 times for a team-high 477 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

USC is hoping to get star WR Marquise Lee (knee) back for Friday’s game at Oregon State. Lee missed last week’s win over Utah and is ‘questionable’ against the Beavers. The Trojans will be without starting TE Randall Telfer and the laundry list of defensive injuries continues to grow. DE Morgan Breslin, who had a team-high 13 sacks in 2012, remains ‘out’ with a hip injury. Starting LB Lamar Dawson was recently lost to a season-ending injury along with reserve safety Gerald Bowman. Starting cornerback Anthony Brown (arm) is also ‘out’ at OSU.

Mike Riley’s team has plenty of its own injury concerns. On the last play of Oregon State’s 20-12 home loss to Stanford last week, WR Kevin Cummings was lost for the season with a broken wrist. Cummings had 23 receptions for 254 yards and two TDs during his senior Read more

College Football Betting News and Notes - Week 3

09.16.2013     06:33 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
I'm well aware that Nebraska doesn't have the defensive players it had a few years back AND that the offense is playing at a faster clip hence more plays/opportunities for the opposition. However over the last two years we've seen the Cornhuskers fail repeatedly when asked to face competent offenses and what’s baffling to me is the lack of any sort of adjustment.

2012 Week 2 - UCLA racked up 653 yards on nearly 6.95 ypp.

2012 Week 6 - Ohio State popped for 63 on the Huskers at over 8 ypp.

2012 Big Ten Championship - Wisconsin hung 70 and nearly 11 ypp!

2012 Bowl Game - Georgia fell just shy of 600 yards at 8.3 ypp.

2013 Week 1 - Wyoming rolled into Lincoln and put up 602 yards (8.1 ypp) and nearly won outright as 31-point dogs.

These days playing defense against top-notch offenses isn't easy. But there are tons of teams with far less talent that are finding ways to get the occasional three-and-out.

One of my biggest bets of Week 3 was on Washington -4 second half vs. Illinois. The Huskies absolutely dominated the first half box score, kicked a FG right before half, and received the ball to start the second. It Read more

Canadian Football League Betting Free Play: Edmonton Eskimos at Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Edmonton at Hamilton -7.5 O/U 55.5
Recommendation: Under

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats spent much of their practice time leading up to this afternoon’s Week 2 matchup against Edmonton retooling and working on their defense. Last season, it was the team’s achilles heel and the problems on defense reared its ugly head once again last week when the Ticats allowed 39 points and nearly 500 total yards to the Toronto Argonauts. Head coach Kent Austin has made several changes on defense entering today’s game; some of them due to injuries and others due to underperformance. As a result, I expect a much stronger and better effort despite the fact they are still a work in progress on that side of the football. Anyone that watched Edmonton last week saw an offense that was pathetic and completely out of sync. Edmonton starting quarterback Mike Reilly was off target throughout the game and the Eskimos’ offensive line was a disaster failing to open holes for the ground game or adequately protecting Riley who took several sacks in last week’s ugly 38-18 loss to Saskatchewan. Reilly completed just 48.6% of his passes with one touchdown and Read more

College Football Gambling: Oregon State QB situation remains unknown

11.13.2012     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
California at Oregon State

Oregon State head coach Mike Riley has yet to commit to a quarterback for Saturday's matchup against Cal. Cody Vaz sprained his ankle in last week's loss to Stanford and according to Sports Options is doubtful. And Sean Mannion is still not fully healed from mid-season knee surgery.

As for Cal, Zach Maynard, who missed last week, remains doubtful. His back-up, Allan Bridgford, colpmeted 9-of-21 passes for 113 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT in last week's 59-17 loss to Oregon. The Golden Bears appear to be in towel-tossing mode failing to win or cover each of their last four games.
