NFL Handicapping: Robert Griffin III expected to start vs. Philadelphia

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington -6.5 at Philadelphia O/U 45

Looks like Washington's Robert Griffin III will start Sunday's game at Philadelphia. Earlier this week, a handful of sportsbooks posted Washington -4/-4.5. Now that he's been upgraded to probable, the lines have jumped to -6/-6.5.

"I like what I see," coach Mike Shanahan said. "If there is no setback, he should be ready to go."

Washington's Robert Griffin III looked shaky in practice earlier this week but reports are out that he was much improved during this morning’s workout. He's still listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Cleveland. Mike Shanahan said Griffin will be a game time decision.

NFL Gambling Notes: Washington Redskins use dreaded 'must win' for Carolina game

Carolina at Washington -3.5 O/U 46.5

Despite a historical success rate of about 43.48% (we made that up), Washington head coach Mike Shanahan pulled out the old "must win" in describing Sunday's game against Carolina.

“I think everybody knows it’s a must-win game when you’re 3-5 at the bye week if you have any chance at the playoffs,” Shanahan said. “Everybody understands at the midway point that you have to play your best football or you’re eliminated awful quick.”

“We know statistically it’s not that way but realistically that’s what happens over the years.”

NFL Preseason Gambling: Redskins starters slated for 30-35 plays vs. Bears

Washington at Chicago -1 O/U 37

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said his starters will play 30-35 snaps against the Chicago Bears tonight.

“It all depends,” Shanahan said after yesterday’s practice. “A lot has to depend on the number of series, number of plays. I shouldn’t say the number of plays, because sometimes the series really don’t dictate the amount of plays that you have. But we’re going to get certain guys a certain amount of plays. We’ll see if we get that done.”

Dallas Cowboys
2011 was another disappointing year for the Cowboys.  They outgained their opponents by 0.3 yards per play, and finished with a +4 turnover margin.  Yet once again, Dallas found ways to lose tight games, suffering five losses by six points or less.

The Cowboys finished the campaign with an 8-8 SU, mark, but a money-losing 5-10-1 ATS record against a middle-of-the-pack strength of schedule.  Despite some defensive shortcomings, the Cowboys went 10-6 to the Under.  And their late season struggles continued – the Cowboys have only two winning Decembers in the last 18 years; none since 2001.

2012 Issues: The Cowboys spent their offseason making moves that make it very clear that they feel that their window of opportunity is right now.  They brought in six potential new starters in free agency, and hired former Raiders and Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan to coordinate the offense.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo is now in his seventh year as the starter.  At 32 years old, Romo is coming off his best statistical season, and he’s got some decent weapons around him: Demarco Read more

NFL Handicapping: Redskins' offensive line in complete shambles

11.17.2011     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas -7.5 at Washington O/U 41.5

The offensive line play for the Washington Redskins has been abysmal due to injuries and lack of continuity. Over the last five games, the run game has produced 61, 52, 26, 92 and 42 yards. According to reports, more injuries and line-up changes to the o-line are expected Sunday against the Cowboys.

“We’re trying to decide that right now, what direction we’re going to go,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said. “We have a couple of options that we’re messing around with, and obviously we’re not going to share all of those options. But we’re going to try to come up with the best formula to give us the best chance to win.”

“That’s definitely the biggest factor,” Shanahan said Read more

Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: NFC Tidbits from Week 9.

Atlanta
Matt Ryan is finally learning what to do with a talented deep threat – just chuck it up there and let Julio Jones make a play on the football. Jones’ first quarter touchdown was a classic 'throw it towards the tall guy between three defenders’ play. Ryan let the rookie out of Alabama make an impressive catch that would make a guy like Larry Fitzgerald (who lives off those type of throws) proud. This was Jones coming out party, and it was truly impressive: five touches, 164 yards from scrimmage. It's hard to gauge how good this performance was, because Indy is positively inept these days, but make no mistake about it – Atlanta dominated that sorry team, looking every bit as good as they did last year when they had the best record in the NFC.

NFL Handicapping: Shanahan says injuries not playing calling causing offense to tank

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco -3.5 at Washington O/U 37.5

The Washington Redskins coaching staff is taking a lot of heat over the team's offensive deficiencies of late. Mike Shanahan claims it has nothing to do with the play calling (from his son), citing that injuries have played a major part. Quarterback John Beck has been a mess, sacked 13 times (9 vs. Buffalo) while tossing three interceptions in his three appearances. They won't be able to go back to Rex Grossman either as Grossman was hospitalized for pneumonia last week.

“Any time you add a new center, a new left guard, a new left tackle, you’re using two tight ends not as much, you’ve got a couple of [new] wide receivers in there, it’s not going to happen right away,” Shanahan said. “It takes some time for Read more

NFL Week 2 Gambling Previews by Fairway Jay

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We enter Week 2 off a 3-1 Sunday and look to duplicate or even improve on our results with the experience and stats of Week 1 games to analyze and review. Many bettors and especially the public overreact to Week 1 results with the influence of a good or bad performance from just one week of action impacting their decisions. With so much excitement and anticipation for the season, you’re wise to temper your enthusiasm and understand both the good and bad breaks that can happen in the NFL. After all, we suffered the toughest total loss in Week 1 action when incredibly the 49ers and Seahawks went over the total after two horrible offensive performances. They combined for just 26 points and less than 370 yards through 54 minutes of action before the meltdown.

On to Week 2 and here are some thoughts and analysis, along with ATS situations that may help you to play on, against or perhaps pass on a game based on information you may not have known.

Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday; typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps simply don’t have.  Today: NFC tidbits from Week1.

Chicago: This offense came out of the gate looking completely in sync despite a myriad of issues on the offensive line.  Rookie left tackle Gabe Carimi (first round out of Wisconsin) had some real growing pains.  Right guard Lance Louis left with an ankle injury and didn’t return.  Jay Cutler got sacked five times and threw a bad interception.  Still, the offense was terrific!  Cutler is now fully versed in his second year running the Mike Martz offense.  There's a level of confidence and continuity here that we haven't seen in Chicago in quite some time, and there were absolutely no repercussions from last year’s playoff Read more
