Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: An early look at the NFC South

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Continuing my summertime tour through the eight NFL divisions, this week, I’ll be taking an in-depth look at the four NFC South teams.  As always, teams are listed in alphabetical order within the division.

The Atlanta Falcons (lined at 7 or 7.5 wins for 2016, depending on the book) went 6-1 SU to open the season last year, but stumbled down the stretch with a 2-7 finish, finishing the season with an improved, yet still disappointing 8-8 SU record.  They were money losers (6-10 ATS, including a 2-10 slide to close out the campaign) despite their two win improvement from 2014 to 2015.  That came on the heels of a two win improvement (from four to six victories) from 2013 to 2014.

The Falcons mainstream stats show one clear weakness from 2015, despite facing one of the easier scheduled in the NFL last year.  Their 30 giveaways ranked among the bottom five teams in the NFL at avoiding turnovers.  They finished +0.0 yards per play, (obviously) right at the league average with the #7 ranked offense and the #16 ranked defense based on yardage numbers.   Both coordinators return from last year’s Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Breaking down the NFL's new offensive coordinators Part 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in my Wiseguy Report, I wrote about a half dozen offensive coordinator changes in the NFL this past offseason.  This week, I’ll finish my analysis of the other half dozen offensive coordinator changes from around the league, with specific focus on how big of a change and how steep of a learning curve these offenses face.  Coordinators are listed in alphabetical order based on their new teams.

Kyle Shanahan, Atlanta Falcons - Shanahan’s dad was certainly a major factor in Kyle’s first few NFL coordinator jobs; none of which have been particularly successful.  Shanahan worked under Mike Shanahan protégé Gary Kubiak as OC in Houston in 2008-2009, and then worked under his dad for four years with the Redskins.  During that span, his team’s reached the playoffs only once – the ill-fated RG3 injury game against Seattle.  Last year’s debacle in Cleveland didn’t exactly bolster his Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Mini-Camp Betting News

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
All 32 NFL teams have concluded their OTA’s (organized team activities) and mini-camps over the past few weeks.  There’s nothing else on the horizon for the NFL before the start of training camps in mid-July.  Therefore, it’s time for bettors and fans alike to fixate on the news trickling out of those mini-camps over the last few weeks.  Here are half a dozen such reports, with teams listed in alphabetical order and information coming from local sources.

Arizona Cardinals - Arizona was an elite team with Carson Palmer behind center last year.  When Palmer got hurt, they were still a pretty good team until Drew Stanton got hurt as well.  Once Arizona was down to a third stringer at quarterback, the back end of the season was ugly as they closed out with a 2-5 stretch, culminating in a blowout to Carolina in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Both Palmer and Stanton fully participated in mini-camp, with Palmer entering the new season as the clear starter, even at 35 years old and coming off his second ACL surgery.  Palmer wowed observers at mini-camp, looking extremely sharp in 11-on-11 Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: San Diego Chargers at Washington Redskins

San Diego at Washington

CRIS Opener:
Washington pk O/U 51
CRIS Current: Washington pk O/U 50
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Washington -1.5
Erin Rynning's Recommendation: San Diego

The San Diego Chargers come in off their bye week with a renewed energy for their franchise after a strong 4-3 start.  New head coach Mike McCoy has done a brilliant job over the first half of the season – a significant upgrade in play from the latter stages of the Norv Turner era.  McCoy has especially done wonders in resurrecting quarterback Philip Rivers with his quick passing attack.  Rivers owns a sweet 15-5 TD-INT ratio, while completing 74% of his passes.  Importantly, the turnovers and sacks have dissipated.  Tight end Antonio Gates is healthy and a difference maker once again as McCoy has featured him underneath for plenty of easy yards.  The clincher for the Chargers’ Read more

NFL Handicapping: Washington's Griffin ready to go for Week 1

Philadelphia at Washington -3.5 O/U 51.5

Not surprising but Washington announced that Robert Griffin III will start Monday's Week 1 game against Philadelphia. The Redskins went 4-0 SU/ATS during the preseason despite Griffin's absence.

"If we didn't feel Robert was full-go and ready to play and do all the things you ask a guy to do, he would not be playing in this game," Shanahan said. "If that's sprinting out, if it's running the option, if it's drop back, he can do all those things because he proved it to us in practice."

Buffalo at Washington -1 O/U 41.5

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan hinting that he may not follow the normal protocol with Saturday's preseason game in terms of playing time for the starters. The Redskins opened -3.5 but were bet down to -1. In other news Robert Griffin practiced against the starters.

“That’s why everybody played in the first half, or the majority of the team played in the first half last week, offensively and defensively,” Shanahan said. “A couple of guys didn’t. I think Pierre [Garcon] and Alfred [Morris] were the only guys that didn’t on offense, and we took out Kirk

NFL Preseason Betting Recap: Buffalo bullies Indianapolis 44-20

Sometimes brand new head coaches are in over their heads the first time they take the field in NFL Preseason action. Other times, they got all the players buying into a new approach with such enthusiasm that reality doesn’t hit the team until opponents start going all out to hurt them in September.

Sunday afternoon, the Buffalo Bills showed what can happen when a new head coach (Doug Marrone from Syracuse) and a pair of hyper rookies can do against an opponent that’s just kind of going through the motions. That will be most clear to you in the passing line below.

(If you’re new to the site, “Drive Points” are those scored on drives of 60 yards or more. “Stat Score” is an estimate of what the final score should have been based only on rushing and passing yardage. The formula for that is 2 times rushing yardage…plus passing yardage…times 0.67…divided by 15. If you’re a regular, yes…I’m just cutting Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Free Pick: Washington Redskins at Tennessee Titans

Washington at Tennessee -3 O/U 35.5
Recommendation: Tennessee

The Redskins are expected to start three rookies in the secondary tonight.  The Titans are expected to give Jake Locker an extended look for a preseason opener; in the range of 20 snaps.  Locker has a lot to prove this August…Advantage: Tennessee.

The betting markets like Washington’s backup QB duo of Rex Grossman and Pat White after Kirk Cousins sits.  No argument there.  But the Titans backup QB rotation looks good as well, with former Bills starter Ryan Fitzpatrick and four year veteran Rusty Smith backing up Locker.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is taking a very relaxed attitude towards game planning here in August.  They’ll be focusing on “general concepts” tonight.  Washington was -3 in their preseason opener last year and scored a grand total of seven points in their non-cover against the Bills.

Washington -6.5 at Philadelphia O/U 45

Looks like Washington's Robert Griffin III will start Sunday's game at Philadelphia. Earlier this week, a handful of sportsbooks posted Washington -4/-4.5. Now that he's been upgraded to probable, the lines have jumped to -6/-6.5.

"I like what I see," coach Mike Shanahan said. "If there is no setback, he should be ready to go."
