College Football Betting Preview: New Mexico Lobos at Colorado State Rams

New Mexico at Colorado State
Saturday, 7:15 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Colorado State -4.5 O/U 61.5
CRIS Current: Colorado State -4.5 OU 62
Recommendation: Colorado State

My clients and I have cashed back-to-back winning bets supporting Colorado State over the past two weeks.  Let me start with an excerpt from last week’s write-up (numbers have been edited slightly to reflect current realities). Here’s what Head Coach Mike Bobo said last week, talking about his team’s mentality following the bye: “It’s leadership of your football team, starting with me of setting the tone in today’s meetings and practice. And anything less than a championship practice is not acceptable. And we don’t accept it. I’d rather it come from the players than me. If it’s coming from the players, then we’ve got a chance to finish strong. If it’s coming from us, it’ll be a fight. This is the time of year where you’ve played eight games, you know, it’s a grind. And the mentally tough guys are the ones that are going to push through and have Read more

College Football Gambling: Arizona draws early bowl against New Mexico's option attack

12.11.2015     07:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A potentially vulnerable double-digit favorite as Arizona takes on New Mexico in a true road game next Saturday. The Wildcats will have a limited amount of time to prep for the Lobos' triple option attack. Arizona, who limped to a 1-4 finished, allowed 200+ yards on the ground each of its last four games. And if you eliminate their 77-13 win over Northern Arizona, the Cats were outscored on the season 415-364. Meanwhile, New Mexico scored November wins over bowl-bound Utah State, Boise State and Air Force. They were outgained however 449-295 in an early season 34-10 loss to Arizona State.

“You weigh your pros and cons,” Rodriguez said when playing a postseason game on another team’s own turf. “I think with New Mexico it’s their area, being from here and being in their home town. They don’t have to adjust to anything.”

College Football Betting Preview: New Mexico State Aggies at UTEP Miners

New Mexico State at UTEP
Saturday, 5 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
UTEP -10.5 O/U 62.5
CRIS Current: UTEP -10 O/U 56
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: UTEP -10
Drew Martin’s Recommendation: UTEP

In the 92nd edition of the Battle of I-10, UTEP will play host to New Mexico State on Saturday night in the Sun Bowl. The undefeated New Mexico State Aggies will make the journey from Las Cruces to El Paso in an attempt to win for the first time in this rivalry since 2008. As we dig into this out-of-conference matchup, we uncover some reasons to be skeptical of the undefeated underdog.

New Mexico State opened its season playing host to Cal Poly. The Aggies got the win, but it took until the middle of the fourth quarter to put Poly away with the final score being 28-10. The Aggies then went on the road in Week 2 in a conference matchup against Georgia State and came out of the Georgia Dome with a Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Initial thoughts on the South Region

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NCAA Tournament field is set and like most bettors, Sunday night is spent skimming through the first round matchups and forming initial thoughts and opinions. Keep in mind that a lot can change leading up to the start of the tournament – most notably where oddsmakers set the lines and where the betting markets drives said lines. For Monday's blog, I'll share my initial thoughts and opinions with our readers on all four regions.

South
No surprise to see Florida earn the no. 1 seed and get to play just down the road in Orlando... Always funny to see the difference power ratings bettors use vs. the criteria of the selection committee with Colorado, a no. 8 seed and ranked 55th (Sagarin) and 64th (Ken Pom) vs. Pitt, a no. 9 seed (20th (Sagarin) and 18th (Ken Pom)... Obviously going to look at turnovers with games involving VCU. The Rams' first round foe, Stephen F. Austin, not only has a respectable turnover rate (16.8) but the Lumberjacks actually forced turnovers at a higher rate (24.1) in conference play than VCU (23.1) – albeit against the rather weak competition of the Southland... Pointless to look at Tulsa’s entire body of Read more

Minnesota will be without its leading scorer again for Saturday's home game vs. Northwestern. Andre Hollins is recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the opening minute of a home win over Wisconsin on Jan. 22. Hollins averages 15.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He was unable to play earlier this week in an 82-78 loss at Nebraska.

Cincinnati senior center Justin Jackson returned to the lineup in Thursday's 69-66 win at Louisville. Jackson injured his ankle early in the first half of Sunday's win at Temple and didn't return. But he looked just fine against the Cardinals, producing 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots in 37 minutes of playing time. The Bearcats won outright as nine-point underdogs and hooked up money-line supporters with a +350 return (paid $350 on $100 wagers). If you didn't know already, now you do. Cincy is a legit national-title contender because it rebounds and defends as well as team in the country. And Mick Cronin has a senior leader in Sean Kilpatrick that dropped 29 points on U of L and always wants the rock at crunch time.

College Football Handicapping: Week 8 Injury Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Before the loss to Texas last week, Oklahoma found out it would be missing senior LB Corey Nelson for the rest of the season due to a pectoral injury. The news got worse earlier this week when starting defensive tackle Jordan Phillips was lost for the rest of the year. Phillips will underdog surgery soon to relieve chronic back pain. Without Nelson and Phillips, the OU defense gave up 36 points and 255 rushing yards to the Longhorns. The Sooners had previously been allowing only 113.2 ypg and 13.0 ppg, so obviously Nelson and Phillips are already being missed.

Ole Miss will be without freshman sensation Robert Nkemdiche for the next three games due to a pulled hamstring suffered in last week’s gut-wrenching loss to Texas A&M. The Rebels might also be sans their other starting defensive end, C.J. Johnson, for Saturday’s home tussle vs. LSU. Johnson was downgraded to ‘doubtful’ after missing Tuesday’s practice with a sprained ankle. The offense is hurting, too, as one of its top weapons is ‘doubtful.’ That would be leading rusher and special-teams dynamo Jeff Scott (thigh), who is averaging 8.2 yards per carry and had a punt Read more

Mountain West Conference Preview

Quarterback Driven League: The starting quarterback play in this conference is as deep and as talented as it has ever been. Returnees Derek Carr (Fresno State), David Fales (San Jose State), Cody Fajardo (Nevada), Chuckie Keeton (Utah State), Brett Smith (Wyoming), Nick Sherry (U.N.L.V.) Joe Southwick (Boise State) and Conner Smith all figure to either equal or increase their team’s offensive production of last season.

New Head Coaches: Nevada, San Jose State and Utah State will all have new head coaches this season. Utah State promoted from within as last season’s OC Matt Wells takes over and their transition should be seamless. The schemes remain in pace on each side of the ball and play during the spring practice session drew solid reviews from HC Wells. While the base systems will remain the same, the coordinators are new. OC Kevin McGiven was the OC at Montana State LY while DC Todd Orlando held the same position at Florida international LY.

At Nevada, Brian Polian takes over for Wolfpack legendary HC Chris Ault. Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting Recap: Syracuse disintegrates, Kansas and New Mexico cut down nets

If you ever wondered by handicappers should pay attention to fatigue, the last 15 minutes of tonight’s Syracuse/Louisville game should have made it crystal clear. Syracuse hit a wall…a bit more than midway through their fourth game in four days. A 16-point lead evaporated in a finger snap. Another finger snap, and Louisville was up by that much!

Syracuse 45-29 in the first 25 minutes

Louisville 49-16 in the last 15 minutes

The treys stopped falling for Syracuse (the laws of math only let you tempt fate for so long), the legs stopped moving in their zone defense…which allowed Louisville to either pass for easy buckets or rebound misses for easy buckets. One team hit a wall just as the other finally found the right gear. Amazing to behold.

Louisville 78, Syracuse 61

2-Point Percentage: Syracuse 41%, Louisville 45%

3-Point Shooting: Syracuse 9/22, Louisville 6/19

Free Throws: Syracuse 12/26, Read more

Mountain West Tournament Preview

The Mountain West Conference Tournament features nine teams, with five of them in position to earn an NCAA berth. As a result, this year’s tournament should be a wide open affair. The contenders include top seed New Mexico, No. 2 Colorado State, No. 3 (and host) UNLV, No. 4 San Diego State and No. 5 Boise State. The Aztecs have had the most success in the tournament in recent years with four straight championship game appearances and two titles including last year.

First Round Pick: Air Force
Air Force had a surprising 8-8 finish in the conference, just two games behind UNLV’s 10-6 mark. They also played UNLV very tough, beating the Rebels by 15 on their home court and falling in overtime here back in January. UNLV was 7-1 SU on its home court in conference play, but covered just twice and won by more than 10 just twice, against bottom feeders Nevada and Wyoming. They lost their last home game to Fresno State and also struggled to beat Boise State in their next to last game, winning by just four. Air Force did have some poor efforts away from home this year, but Read more

College Basketball Betting: Road teams have had success in San Diego State-New Mexico series

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego State at New Mexico -5.5 O/U 131

The road side has been the play of late in the San Diego State-New Mexico series winning five off the last seven games outright. The trend goes back even further with road teams on a 14-3 ATS run. The betting markets aren’t buying it however with the Lobos bet up from -5 to -5.5/-6 for tonight's meeting. Through 57 Mountain West games this season, home teams have won 40 times (70.2%) straight up. It's the second highest rate behind the Missouri Valley at 71.2% (57-23). Also throw in the fact that in the first meeting, SDSU embarrassed UNM 55-34.
