Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers takes a look at 28 NCAA Tournament matchups

03.18.2013     10:19 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With the madness that is March now in full swing, it’s time to take a look through the brackets.  Today, I’ll offer a quick take on the 28 matchups already set for Thursday and Friday.  Games are listed in rotation order.

Missouri spent the entire season losing close games on the road, falling in OT at UCLA and Kentucky, while dropping games by three points or less at Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas A&M, LSU and to Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament.  Larry Eustachy got the most he could out of Colorado State’s talent level this year, but the Rams, too, lost nearly every step-up game on the highway.

As a No. 3 seed, Marquette is only a 3.5-point favorite over No. 14 seed Davidson.  The betting markets clearly respect the Wildcats five upperclassmen starters that started 30 of their 33 previous games together this season.

Butler has won at least the first two games of every single postseason tournament they’ve played since 2010, including runs in the Horizon League and A-10 conference tourney’s, two runs to the championship Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Fade the Dead in College Hoops

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s late February, and there’s still two more full weeks of regular season action in college hoops before the madness truly begins. It’s too early to write about conference tournament betting strategies – I’ll save that for next week. But it’s not too late to write about the bevy of ‘dead’ teams that are populating the college hoops landscape right now; teams that are lethargically playing out the string of the regular season. Sometimes, the sharp move is to lay big points fading sorry teams.

Even bad teams have hope in November – the season is fresh and new; teammates aren’t sick and tired of each other or their coaches, and the nagging injuries haven’t started to pile up. And teams that get smacked around in non-conference play for two months get an opportunity to regroup against comparable competition when conference play begins in January.

But when things go south in conference play, it’s not easy for many of these squads to continue competing at the same level they were earlier in the season. By late February, the final few weeks of the regular season are a meat grinder for struggling Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Illinois Fighting Illini at Northwestern Wildcats

Illinois -3.5 at Northwestern O/U 129.5
Recommendation: Under

Have to respect the job Northwestern head coach Bill Carmody has done with his injury plagued squad this season. Despite losing top scorer Drew Crawford early on and then key starting forward Jared Swopshire last week, the Wildcats were able to hang in until the closing minute and get an easy pointspread cover at Ohio State Wednesday night. Today the task becomes even more difficult as starting center Alex Olah will not play (head injury) and starting guard Reggie Hearn (ankle) will likely play at less than 100%. Olah is crucial to NU’s Princeton style attack since he’s used as a high screener and primary passer away from the basket. His abilities in those areas will again force the Wildcats to adjust offensively. Always patient and deliberate on the attack end, expect Northwestern to be even more methodical in this contest by milking every possession. Also figure the ‘Cats to Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: TCU's upset of Kansas highlights crazy night

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Earlier tonight I posted the numbers from TCU’s upset of Kansas. There was a slew of games on this crazy night that could have earned their own post. That would have taken all night to write though. So, I’m going to cherry pick some key numbers from important games involving ranked teams.

#7 Arizona (-8.5) beat Stanford 73-67

Arizona fell behind Stanford 10-0 out of the gate, and it looked like we were going to see a replay of the UCLA game on this floor. But, the Wildcats settled down…got back into the game quickly enough, then pulled away in the final moments to win by six. If you buy into the theory that Arizona is overrated when they’re matched up against quality, that paid off against the market price. I’m still skeptical about how some of their Read more

Northwestern at Illinois -10.5 O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Illinois

I don’t lay big points often but tonight’s game sets up as a great opportunity to support an Illinois team that is obviously not at all happy after a pair of blowout losses. The Illini lost at home to Minnesota, 84-67, and were crushed on the road by Wisconsin, 74-51. Illinois is now sitting at just 1-3 in Big Ten play and is in desperate need of a confidence inducing performance. I expect that we will see a motivated and focused home team tonight.

Aside from a road win at woeful Penn State, Northwestern hasn’t exactly stepped up in class against the better teams in the Big Ten with the Wildcats losing 94-66 at home to Michigan, 69-51 at Minnesota and a 70-50 home loss to Iowa on the weekend. The heart of Northwestern’s problems is the absence of senior forward Drew Crawford who is out for the year with a shoulder injury. The Wildcats have struggled Read more

Northwestern +16.5 at Minnesota O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Northwestern

The Gophers are fat and happy off their 18-2 closeout run against Michigan State on Monday, turning a very tight game into a blowout in the final four minutes. The Wildcats are looking for redemption following their worst loss of the season, a 99-64 home annihilation at the hands of #2 Michigan. It was a game where the Wolverines couldn’t miss, hitting just shy of 60% of their shots from both inside and outside the arc. Put those two factors together with this inflated double digit pointspread and Northwestern becomes a clear choice on Sunday.

Minnesota has repeatedly struggled to get good shots against the Wildcats 1-3-1 zone in every recent meeting. Northwestern has won four of the last seven meetings between these two schools, and Minnesota only has one win by more than eleven points against the Wildcats in the last nine games that they’ve played, a competitive Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Northwestern turns to underclassmen vs. Michigan

Michigan -10.5 at Northwestern O/U 128.5

It'll be interesting to see how Northwestern handles tonight's matchup against Michigan. The Wildcats already lost Drew Crawford (13.5 ppg) for the season and Reggie Hearn (14.5 ppg) is out with an ankle injury. As a result, Northwestern's top six players in terms of possessions used are four freshmen, a sophomore and a senior.

"Where are we going to get the scoring from?" Carmody asked. "Three weeks ago, we had Drew and Reggie and they gave me 30 a game. Who are you going to get it from?"

"Coach Carmody has had a lot of success with freshmen in his system and it's one of those years where we're going to have to have freshmen step in and do the best they can and play with confidence and run the stuff they run," Sobolewski said.

Mississippi State -3 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Northwestern -2 O/U 53.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Mississippi State pk

Northwestern overachieved this season getting to a January 1st bowl game.  They were expected to be a middle of the pack Big Ten team, while trying to replace many starters from last year’s team.  However, times have changed for the Wildcats as they’ll play in their fifth straight postseason.  The Wildcats will certainly be motivated as they’ve lost nine straight bowl games with their last win coming in 1949.  The current bowl run is evident in their recruiting and talent on the football field.  This is an athletic team and while not quite on the SEC’s level, a player like Kane Colter is a Read more

Northwestern vs. Mississippi State -2 O/U 51.5

Northwestern talks about preparing for its Gator Bowl matchup against Mississippi State. The Wildcats have lost four consecutive bowl games.

“The guys who have played a lot of reps, their bodies are really starting to feel better. That’s key. You want to be crisp. Now we’re knocking out some physical practices and then when we get to Jacksonville, maybe we slow it down a bit.”

“I’m more comfortable in the (bowl) routine,” Fitzgerald said. “Like a lot of things, the first time you do it, you look back and think: 'What the heck was I doing?' We’ve definitely tweaked our plan. I’m probably jaded by what I experienced as a player.”

New Mexico Bowl - Albuquerque, NM

Nevada vs. Arizona
CRIS Opener:
Arizona -9 O/U 76
CRIS Current: Arizona -9 O/U 77
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arizona -11.5

Run through all 70 bowl teams and you’d have a hard time coming up with many worse than Arizona when it comes to stopping the competition. However, it appears the Wildcats lucked out by drawing Nevada in this year’s New Mexico Bowl. Of teams playing in the postseason, only Baylor was worse than the Wolf Pack at stopping teams on third down. Keep in mind the Bears played the 4th toughest schedule in the country, while Nevada played the 113th. And in looking at Nevada’s schedule, only Fresno State compares to Arizona from a yards-per-game perspective and the Bulldogs hung 52 on the Wolf Pack.

The turning point in Nevada's season was the overtime loss to San Read more
