College Football Handicapping: Texas A&M has advantages over Oklahoma

Texas A&M -3 vs. Oklahoma O/U 72.5

Even in the era of pass-happy offenses, running the football and stopping the run remain vital when it comes to covering pointspreads. If you buy into that philosophy, then you should be interested in tonight's Cotton Bowl. According to our ACCU-Stats, Texas A&M has a significant edge over Oklahoma in the run game.

 copy_accu_cotton.JPG

The Aggies average 6.22 ypc and allow 4.81 ypc. The Sooners meanwhile average 5.03 ypc and allow 5.53 ypc. A little math shows A&M to be +1.09 ypc and +0.73 ypca. Alabama, who is currently a 10-point favorite over Notre Dame in the BCS Championship, is +0.67 ypc and +0.75 ypca. And A&M's advantage is hardly fraudulent considering it played in the SEC and had a similar strength of schedule (14th) to Oklahoma (4th). And, the Sooners don't own any significant edge in Read more

Cotton Bowl - Dallas, Texas
Friday, January 4, 5 pm PT - FOX
Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -3.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -3.5 O/U 72
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Texas A&M -3.5

The Cotton Bowl will feature Oklahoma versus Texas A&M and at the start of the season the odds of one selecting these two teams for this game had to be 1000-1. Sure, Oklahoma was touted by many as a potential BCS Championship team, but to envision A&M in this bowl contest? Not a chance. Especially since they made the huge step up in class from the Big XII to the SEC.

Texas A&M is coming off a 7-6 2011 season where they lost nine starters including their stud quarterback Ryan Tannehill who was the 8th pick in the NFL draft. Also during last season Texas A&M amassed an impressive 11-game double-digit lead at the half, but only held on to win Read more

College Football Gambling: Oklahoma defense tries to recover from West Virginia fiasco

Oklahoma State at Oklahoma -7 O/U 72.5

So we are confident that Oklahoma State won't be able to match West Virginia's 778 total yards it racked up against Oklahoma last week. We think...

“Something has to change. We have to come in on Monday with a new attitude,” OU defensive end David King said. “We’re happy that we won. I won’t take that away. But defensive-wise, it’s embarrassing. It’s poor. It’s not how we want to be remembered, especially with next week being the last game for a bunch of seniors.

“We have to come Monday with a whole new attitude about everything. You take the coaching, and you know they’re going to get us pretty harsh. It was embarrassing. I thank the offense for saving our butts today.”

Oklahoma -12 at Iowa State O/U 52.5

On today's Sportsmemo Podcast College Football Every Game on the Board discussion, Teddy Covers mentioned that Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops had a strong track record in games following a loss. He is the official numbers dating back to 1999:

Oklahoma off a Loss under Bob Stoops 1999-present
Straight Up: 27-2
Against the Spread: 21-7 (average line -16.9)

Teddy also pointed out Iowa State's historical offensive struggles against the Sooners. Since 1999: 10 points, 3, 7, 9, 7, 0 and 6.

College Football Betting: Kansas going with two quarterbacks vs. Oklahoma

Kansas at Oklahoma -35 O/U 57.5

When you've lost five straight, have the 97th ranked passing attack, and are a 35-point road underdog, there's no time like the present to get a little creative. Kansas head coach Charlie Weis says he has a few wrinkles for Saturday's game at Oklahoma, including playing two quarterbacks.

“I think that Michael deserves an opportunity to play, based off of his recent performance,” Weis said. “Both of the quarterbacks have been informed that they’re gonna play. They know what we have available to them.”

“I have a whole bunch of things in for this game,” Weis said. “We can’t just go line up and go vanilla and sit there and figure we’re gonna slug it out, and that’s gonna work out to our advantage.”

College Football Gambling Preview: Tennessee Volunteers at Mississippi State Bulldogs

Tennessee at Mississippi State
Brent Crow's Recommendation:
Mississippi State
Saturday, 6 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Mississippi State -2.5 O/U 53
CRIS Current: Mississippi State -3 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Mississippi State -4

Through five games, unbeaten Mississippi State has yet to be challenged but gets its biggest test of the season against Tennessee. The Bulldogs have beaten up on some weak teams this year; Kentucky, Auburn, South Alabama, Troy and Jackson State – none of which hold a candle to Tennessee offensively. MSU has forced 15 turnovers while committing just four, but that should be expected given the competition. They have been good but not great on offense, averaging just over 400 ypg despite playing two Sun Belt squads and FCS Jackson State.

The good news for Mississippi State is that Tennessee if far from a defensive juggernaut. The Vols’ Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Dallas Cowboys at Baltimore Ravens

Dallas at Baltimore
Teddy Covers' Recommendation:
Dallas
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Baltimore -4 O/U 45
CRIS Current: Baltimore -3.5 O/U 44

We last saw the Cowboys getting embarrassed at home on Monday Night Football in a turnover filled debacle of a loss against Chicago.  Tony Romo threw a career worst five interceptions in that ballgame; completely out of sync with big play receivers Dez Bryant, Kevin Ogletree and Miles Austin.  DeMarco Murray gained only 24 yards on eleven carries and the Cowboys defense couldn’t stop Jay Cutler.

At 2-2, the Cowboys certainly haven’t quit on their coach or their season.  Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten: “This has to be a wake-up call for us…We're not going to quit. We're going to stay together. I believe we have the right people. Great leadership in Jason (Garrett). We'll get it turned around.”  The Cowboys should be much healthier off Read more

College Football Gambling Preview: Texas Longhorns vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Texas vs. Oklahoma
Ian Cameron's Recommendation:
Texas
Saturday, 9 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -3.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -3.5 O/U 58.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma -2.5

The Red River Rivalry gets renewed on Saturday and this time around, Texas has a good chance to snap their two-game losing streak. Two injuries for Texas you will want to keep an eye on are RB Malcolm Brown and LB Jordan Hicks.  Both are listed as questionable at this time. Brown has 245 rushing yards on 40 carries this season and Hicks is the leading tackler on this Longhorns defense.

Texas comes into this game a little bit undervalued after last week’s home loss to West Virginia. The Longhorns have been forced to deal with two potent offenses the last two weeks with Oklahoma State and WVU and are certainly battle tested. Keep in mind the Sooners’ offensive line is still a concern. Read more

Handicapper Alf Musketa's College Football Week 6 Early Line Moves Report

Virginia at Duke
Duke opened -1, now -2, -2.5
The reason we want to mention this game is the health of Duke's starting QB Sean Renfree who has an elbow injury. There are countless market players that are speculating on this game like they did on several games last week – Western Michigan and Rice were potentially without their starting QBs and bettors were buying numbers before ESPN's Sports Center or Twitter knew about it. Buyer beware with Duke and Renfree who is having an MRI Tuesday, but I also believe that there are many sharp handicappers who are lining up just to bet against the inept Cavaliers. Agree with the line move.

Texas A&M at Mississippi
A&M opened -8.5, now -11 across the board
I talked to a few handicappers Sunday afternoon and we compared our College Football lines and power ratings and we all had A&M at -10.5 or higher. Sometimes the linesmakers have just not caught up to a team and will get steamrolled on one side. What is there not to like about A&M who has scored 48, 70 and 58 points respectively in their last three games and seem to be getting better on Read more

NCAAF Gambling: Oklahoma having difficult time duplicating last year's fast pace

Oklahoma -5 at Texas Tech O/U 58.5

Last year, Oklahoma led the nation is offensive plays per game at nearly 81. This year, the Sooners are having difficulty duplicating that type of frenetic pace with a more modest 72.3 plays per game. In a recent article from the Tulsa Word, both coaches and players had a plethora of excuses as to why the offense has yet to really take off (43 points vs. Kansas State and UTEP). Perhaps it's a sign that they simply don't have the horses this season. OU's two lined games went under the closing total by 13.5 and 32 points.

"Execution is what allows you to move the ball and to succeed, whether it's fast or slow," Stoops said. "So overall, any time we're not moving the football, the immediate need is the execution needs to be better."

"It is tiring. Read more
