NCAA Tournament Betting: Gonzaga comfortable in role of underdog

03.20.2014     12:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma State -3 vs. Gonzaga O/U 139

Unlike years past, Gonzaga seems to be flying somewhat under the radar this postseason as a small underdog to Oklahoma State for Friday's first round matchup. The Cowboys were -2 from much of the week but earlier today were bet up to -3.

“It feels like we’re kind of flying under the radar,” Pangos said over the phone from the Spokane, Wash., campus as his team continued preparations for a first-round matchup with the No. 9 Oklahoma State Cowboys (21-12) on Friday in San Diego.

“We’ve known we were going to get in (the tournament) for a week, but nobody’s really talking about us. Last year, we were the talk of the tournament. It was, ‘Is Gonzaga overrated, blah, blah, blah.’ ”

Kansas pk at Oklahoma State O/U 149.5
Recommendation: Kansas

Kansas clinched a share of the Big XII title in its last game at home against Oklahoma and go for the outright title this evening in Stillwater. The Jayhawks should be able to do so against an Oklahoma State team that has won two straight since the return of Marcus Smart, but is still not the team that everyone expected them to be at the beginning of the season. OSU snapped a seven-game losing skid in Smart's return against Texas Tech and followed that win up with a blowout win vs. TCU (combined 5-25 record in league play). The Cowboys are still a flawed team and had lost four straight games before Smart's suspension. They have very little depth and their defense has suffered without Michael Cobbins in the middle. Kansas will take advantage of the Cowboys in the paint and on the glass with Perry Ellis and Joel Embiid. Oklahoma State definitely has one of the strongest home courts in college basketball and should have an enthusiastic crowd but even a spirited effort won't be enough. Kansas has won in its last two visits to Stillwater and has beaten the Cowboys in six of the last seven Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
- Kansas is 5-0-1 ATS in its last six games as a double-digit favorite. The Jayhawks, who are favored by 11.5 tonight at home vs. Oklahoma, can clinch at least a share of their 10th consecutive Big 12 regular-season title with a win over the Sooners.

- Oklahoma owns a 7-3-1 spread record in 11 games as an underdog this season. The Sooners have only lost by a double-digit margin once all year in an 87-76 defeat to Michigan St. at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

--The 'over' is on an 8-3 run for KU.

- Although OU has seen the 'over' go 14-10 overall, the 'under' is 5-2 in its road assignments.

- Maryland has played improved basketball of late and been tough at home. The Terrapins have won seven of their last eight home games, going 5-2 ATS in the seven lined contests. They catch Syracuse tonight on a quick turnaround in College Park as short home underdogs. Mark Turgeon's team hasn't played since last Tuesday's home win over Wake Forest, so the spot certainly sets up well for the Terps.

- Oklahoma State ended its seven-game losing streak and 0-8 ATS slide with Saturday's clubbing of Texas Tech. The Cowboys can't afford a loss tonight as Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Oklahoma State limps into tonight's contest at Baylor

Oklahoma State at Baylor -4.5 O/U 143.5

Six straight losses and not much confidence as Oklahoma State heads to Baylor for a shot at redemption after to losing to the Bears (with Marcus Smart) in Stillwater two weeks ago. On the flipside you have a Baylor squad off of rare back-to-back wins; the last of which a miraculous overtime win vs. Kansas State thanks to a last second three in regulation by Brady Heslip.

“They’re down — this is as down of a locker room that I’ve seen,” said Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford after the loss to the Sooners. “We just need to keep our head up and understand there is a lot of basketball left to be played. It doesn’t get any easier out on the road.”

Oklahoma State at Texas -4 O/U 145.5

Losers of four straight, Oklahoma State heads to Texas sans Marcus Smart who was suspended for three games. According to Sagarin, and with Texas' home court worth 4 points, the game is a pick 'em. Ken Pom has Texas -2. Both power ratings based on teams being at full strength. Keep in mind the Texas may be without Jonathan Holmes (13.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg). He had an MRI on his knee over the weekend and is listed as a game time decision.

“We have opportunities for players to step up,” Ford said. “This is going to give an opportunity for some of them who haven’t been playing quite as much to pick up the Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Home teams have dominated Bedlam series

01.27.2014     08:46 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma State -4.5 at Oklahoma O/U 162.5

A quick look at the hardwood version of Battle of Bedlam as Oklahoma State is currently a 4.5-point favorite at Oklahoma. From a straight up perspective the home team has dominated the series winning nine straight dating back to 2009. Note that the two squads met in the Big XII Tournament on two occasions (both neutral). The Sooners own a slight 5-3 ATS edge over the last eight regular season meetings. The series has also trended over the total at 6-2 O/U but this evening's total is significantly higher than recent numbers. Those shops offering a line posted 162.5 to 163.5. The first meeting in 2013 closed 124.5.

After further review, UTEP's suspensions for sports betting are ridiculous

01.09.2014     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The smoke has cleared following the suspension of three UTEP players for sports betting. As mentioned, there is currently no evidence – according to the FBI and university – that the players bet on UTEP games or where shaving points. Now it is pretty obvious that with the FBI's involvement, there was a one point suspicion of exactly that. Certainly the FBI is aware that betting on sports is fairly common among college athletes – so common that a poll from 2012 showed that 57% of male athletes gambled on sports in some capacity. What is concerning is how quickly the players were shown the door. The NCAA stipulates that athletes caught gambling will be suspended for one year as well as lose a year of eligibility. As pointed out by local ESPN radio host Steve Kaplowitz, the situation is unprecedented in that there haven't been many (if any) cases of athletes being suspended for sports betting that Read more

Texas +12.5 at Oklahoma State
Recommendation: Texas

This isn’t a bet against Oklahoma State as much as it is a bet on Texas.  The Longhorns have made believers out of me, despite their youth, with no seniors and only one junior on Rick Barnes’ squad this year.  But we’ve seen Texas hang tough away from home, gutting out tough road wins at Temple and North Carolina; blowing out DePaul and hanging tough with BYU for the full 40 minutes at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

Texas is not a team to lay points with, as we saw in their home loss to Oklahoma on Saturday – they seem to play up or down to their level of competition.  But they covered wire-to-wire in both previous tries as an underdog away from home; a track record that comes into play again tonight.

Texas has extraordinary talent even though they’re young, with five guys averaging in double figures.  They’ve got a defensive mindset, holding foes to 39% shooting for the season.  And the Longhorns are massive in the low post with Cameron Ridley, Jonathan Holmes, Prince Ibeh and Connor Lammert all taking up Read more

College Football Gambling: Missouri still feels disrespected

12.18.2013     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma State vs. Missouri -1 O/U 60.5

Missouri is using the disrespect card heading into its Cotton Bowl matchup against Oklahoma State.

“We still have one of the best offenses in the nation, and I’ll believe that until someone tells me otherwise,” left tackle Justin Britt said minutes after a 59-42 loss that cost Mizzou an SEC title and a spot in the BCS national championship game. “You know, the story ain’t over. There’s still stuff to be written.”

“We’re still not getting respected, man,” center Evan Boehm said in that otherwise quiet locker room. “We moved the ball on an Auburn team that Alabama had trouble moving the ball (against). If we’re not getting respected after this game, even though Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Manhattan Jaspers at South Carolina Gamecocks

Manhattan at South Carolina -2.5
Recommendation: South Carolina

Pair of potential problems exists here for home-standing Gamecocks who have shown a mixed bag of results in their 2-3 start to this season. The first concern is the 11-day layoff South Carolina has had since playing its last game which was a disastrous 75-52 road loss to no. 7 Oklahoma State. That game magnified the second concern for head coach Frank Martin’s team which is turnovers. South Carolina committed 24 of them against the up-tempo Cowboys which dropped them to 296th in the nation at 14.6 per game. Relentless pressure defense is what Manhattan is predicated on under 4th year head coach Steve Masiello and thus far they’ve forced 14.7 turnovers per game while averaging 7.4 steals. This would appear to be a hand in glove matchup for the Jaspers defense but the return of South Carolina guard Bruce Ellington tonight could help shore up some of the ball handling woes. Ellington (starting WR on SC’s football team) makes his first start and is a backcourt veteran.

These teams have similarities as both have been poor shooting the basketball (42.3% Manhattan, Read more
