Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Western Conference Playoffs update

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two weeks ago, I broke down the Eastern Conference Playoff Race in this column, concluding (to no surprise) that the Miami Heat are truly deserving of their big chalk, heavy favorite status; clearly the team to beat.

Last week, I got distracted by the upcoming (at the time) NFL Draft; looking to make my point that draft results hold surprisingly little influence over the opening Week 1 pointspreads, and that every prediction you read or hear about ‘Draft Grades’ is likely to be flawed at best, dead wrong at worst.

That being said, one other factor about the NFL Draft was perfectly clear this past weekend.  The better organizations in the NFL are in much better position to succeed than the weaker organizations.  Which is which?  Look no further than a recent recap of Super Bowl champs to identify ‘good’ organizations – squads with a short and long term plan, and the management team to implement that plan.

The Ravens, Giants, Packers, Steelers, Patriots, Colts, Seahawks and 49ers are at the top of my ‘quality organization’ list, and you can assume a priori that those eight organizations Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: No. 12 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 4 Saint Louis Billikens

Oregon at Saint Louis -4 O/U 125
Recommendation: Saint Louis

Saint Louis is real deal; the best mid-major team in the country right now (sorry, Gonzaga).  And the Billikens are as hot as any team in the country right now; 16-1 SU in their last 17 games, the lone loss coming on the road in overtime at Xavier.

SLU hasn’t just been winning – it has been killing teams!  Twelve of their 16 wins during this span have come by double-digit margins and none have come by less than four points; enough to cover Saturday’s spread.  We’re not just talking about beating patsies either – three wins over Butler, two over VCU, along with blowouts over LaSalle, Dayton and St Joe’s.

And look at how well the Atlantic-10 conference has done here in the postseason! In the Big Dance alone, we’ve seen Temple’s win over NC State, VCU’s blowout over Akron, Saint Louis’s smackdown over Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 12 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 5 Oklahoma State Cowboys

NCAA Tournament - Midwest Region
Thursday, 1:40 pm PT, at San Jose, Calif.
No. 12 Oregon vs. No. 5 Oklahoma State
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma State -3.5 O/U 135
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -3 O/U 135
Recommendation: Oregon

The Oregon Ducks, like most NCAA Tournament teams, had their ups and downs this season but much of their struggles can be attributed to having to adjust to being without starting pointguard Dominic Artis. He suffered a foot injury against Washington State on January 23rd. Prior to that game, Oregon was 16-2 SU and 9-7 ATS. Following the Artis injury, Oregon went into a mini tailspin going 4-4 SU but only 1-7 ATS. Since Artis’s return against Oregon State on February 28th, Oregon has showed signs of getting back on track including a perfect 3-0 SU run in the PAC-12 Tournament.

Artis hasn’t scored more than six points in a game since his return and he was scoreless in 13 minutes of action in Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: TCU's upset of Kansas highlights crazy night

SportsMemo.com blog entry.

Earlier tonight I posted the numbers from TCU’s upset of Kansas. There was a slew of games on this crazy night that could have earned their own post. That would have taken all night to write though. So, I’m going to cherry pick some key numbers from important games involving ranked teams.

#7 Arizona (-8.5) beat Stanford 73-67

Arizona fell behind Stanford 10-0 out of the gate, and it looked like we were going to see a replay of the UCLA game on this floor. But, the Wildcats settled down…got back into the game quickly enough, then pulled away in the final moments to win by six. If you buy into the theory that Arizona is overrated when they’re matched up against quality, that paid off against the market price. I’m still skeptical about how some of their Read more

Football Outsiders breaks down luckiest and unluckiest college football teams

Interesting article on the luckiest and unluckiest teams in college football this season. Using some of its sabermetric-type numbers, Football Outsiders considers Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Michigan, BYU, and Cincinnati to be the five unluckiest teams. The five most fortunate include Ohio State, LSU, Stanford, Louisville and Notre Dame.

More proof that college football players know the pointspread of their games

This appears to be Purdue quarterback Robert Marve's actual Twitter account. So we found it pretty cool that he re-Tweeted someone who mentioned that the Boilermakers are currently the biggest betting underdog on the card for the upcoming college football bowl season.

College Football Gambling: Oklahoma defense tries to recover from West Virginia fiasco

Oklahoma State at Oklahoma -7 O/U 72.5

So we are confident that Oklahoma State won't be able to match West Virginia's 778 total yards it racked up against Oklahoma last week. We think...

“Something has to change. We have to come in on Monday with a new attitude,” OU defensive end David King said. “We’re happy that we won. I won’t take that away. But defensive-wise, it’s embarrassing. It’s poor. It’s not how we want to be remembered, especially with next week being the last game for a bunch of seniors.

“We have to come Monday with a whole new attitude about everything. You take the coaching, and you know they’re going to get us pretty harsh. It was embarrassing. I thank the offense for saving our butts today.”

West Virginia at Oklahoma State
Ian Cameron’s Recommendation:
Oklahoma State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT – ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma State -7.5 O/U 79
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -9.5 O/U 79
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Oklahoma State -6

West Virginia suffered a pair of blowout losses to Texas Tech and Kansas State prior to its bye week. They regrouped off the bye and put forth one of their best defensive efforts of the season against TCU last week but it still wasn’t enough as the Mountaineers allowed a victory to slip away when they inexplicably gave up a 94-yard TD to the Horned Frogs with 1:28 left to tie the game. WVU eventually lost 39-38 in overtime. It was a demoralizing loss and I don’t think they will find it easy to bounce back for this week’s Big XII showdown in Stillwater against Oklahoma State.

After a hot start to the season, Geno Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Getting a jump on oddsmakers and the betting markets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2012-13 College Basketball season gets under way on Friday and this bettor has been hard at work trying to get a beat on as many teams as possible. Putting in the work during the preseason can put you well ahead of oddsmakers and the betting markets and over the last month I have been going through each conference paying special attention to teams with coaching changes. During my tenure at Sportsmemo I've produced three consecutive winnings seasons including 2011-12's 109-76 59% +33 unit mark. It is my strongest sport as a bettor and I encourage everyone to be a part of what hopes to be another successful campaign. For today let's take a look at a few teams I have pegged to take a step back this season. Assuming the market cooperates – which doesn't always happen – I'll be actively seeking spots to fade these squads during November.

Xavier - This one is almost too easy and everything I've read will assuredly be reflected in their prices, but the Musketeers are headed for tough times. Point guard Mark Lyons left for Arizona, second leading scorer Dezmine Wells was kicked off the Read more
