College Football Betting News: Baylor QB dealing with back issues

11.19.2015     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Baylor could be in a sticky situation for Saturday's game at Oklahoma State. Former backup and current starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham is dealing with a bruised back. He's likely to play but if not, the Bears' third stringer, Chris Johnson, would get the call. Johnson has spent parts of the season playing wide receiver. Saturday's game is currently lined at a pick 'em.

"Honestly, not as far along as what I'd like for him to be," Briles said. "We'll see in the next day or two."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing bye-less College Football teams

11.02.2015     10:16 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Seventeen college football teams enter November without having had a single bye week since the start of the season and without a bye this coming week.  Those teams are Arizona, Ball State, Boston College, Colorado, UConn, Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Miami-Ohio, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas Tech, Western Kentucky, Wisconsin and Wyoming.  Two more teams, North Texas and UMass, haven’t had byes since Week 1; teams that started their seasons a week late, but haven’t had a break since.  Is there anything unique or different about these non-bye squads?  Read on to find out.

Five of the 17 teams listed above don’t have any bye weeks at all.  Florida International, Miami-Ohio, Hawaii (with their 13 game schedule!), Arizona and Colorado will finish the season without a break.  Note that none of those five are going to play in a conference championship game, and only two (Arizona and FIU) have any realistic shot to make a bowl game.  Bye-less teams don’t tend to be very successful.  Most importantly for our purposes, they also don’t tend to cover many pointspreads Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: West Virginia Mountaineers at Oklahoma State Cowboys

West Virginia at Oklahoma State -4 O/U 134.5
Recommendation: Under

Oklahoma State has been really consistent when it comes to pace this season regardless of opponent. In their last two games, against TCU and Iowa State,  there were 124 and 126 possessions respectively. That's very important when we consider how different both those squads are on the offensive end. When the Cowboys faced Big XII squads that play up-tempo (Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma) five of those six games went under the total. Those totals ranged from the mid-130’s to mid-140’s. No matter what the opposition, it’s hard to reach that mark when you prefer a slow pace, fail to average over a point per possession, and grade out as above average defensively. Statistically, West Virginia is the fastest team in the Big XII because they press and their games often feature an endless amount of free throws. But this is a different team on the road as three of their last four road games failed to top 130 (127, 124, 123, and 138 against Iowa State). Very important game for both sides, particularly Oklahoma State who desperately needs a victory after back-to-back losses. Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Quick hitters on Saturday's games

01.16.2015     08:48 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
Here are some quick hitters on this weekend's marquee college basketball matchups.

Utah at Arizona - After a home friendly schedule to start PAC-12 play, the Utes took care of business last night at Arizona State (76-59). Arizona rolled over an injury-riddled Colorado squad. The total for this one should come out somewhere in the mid-120's. It'll feature two of the top 10 defensive teams in the country in terms of efficiency. In the three other instances where they has happened this season we saw very limited scoring: Kentucky vs. Louisville (108 points), San Diego State vs. Utah (102 points), and Arizona vs. San Diego State (120 points).

Kansas at Iowa State - Would expect a lot of pace and scoring in this matchup based on last year's three meetings. The Jayhawks won both regular season meetings but the Cyclones got revenge in the Big XII Tournament. Those three contests averaged 152 possessions and 165 points. Oddsmakers have been adjusting high totals toward the under so expect this one to open around 146-147.

Ohio State at Iowa - The Hawkeyes finally got their offense going with 77 points last time Read more

Cactus Bowl Betting Preview: Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Washington Huskies

Oklahoma State vs. Washington
Friday, January 2, 7:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Washington -5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Washington -6.5 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Washington -4.5

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy cost me a bet in late November when he surprisingly pulled the redshirt off QB Mason Rudolph with only two games remaining in the season.  Rudolph was their heralded recruit, a top 20 QB coming out of high school and a HUGE upgrade over backup Daxx Garman who has been starting since Week 2 following the season ending injury to junior JT Walsh.

The Cowboys season long stats are going to show that they can’t throw the football very well and have a very limited offense.  But if you watched Rudolph’s first two collegiate starts, you know that those season long stats are a non-factor moving forward.  in the rain, in a very hostile Read more

College Football Handicapping: Early line moves for Week 9

10.21.2014     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Quick look at some of the early moves in the Week 9 college football betting markets.

Miami (FL) at Virginia Tech
CRIS Opener: Virginia Tech -3
CRIS Current: Miami (FL) -3
Comment: Miami comes in off of a bye week. Last time Hokies were a home dog: vs. Florida State 11/8/2012. FSU won 28-22 but failed to cover as 12.5-point favorites.

Central Michigan at Buffalo
CRIS Opener: Central Michigan -3
CRIS Current: Central Michigan -4.5
Comment: Bulls off a bye week and the firing of head coach Jeff Quinn. OC Alex Wood takes over. Off win at Northern Illinois, CMU coughs it up five times in loss to Ball State.

Kent State at Miami (OH)
CRIS Opener: Miami (OH) -5.5
CRIS Current: Miami (OH) -7.5
Comment: RedHawks' lone win of the season came by one point over UMass. Kent off its first win (39-17 vs. Army). Two of the Golden Flashes' MAC losses came by a field goal.

Temple at UCF
CRIS Opener: UCF -11
CRIS Current: UCF -8

College Footbal Gambling: Oklahoma State offense lacking potency

10.08.2014     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The stats don't look all that different but in watching Oklahoma State it is clear this isn't a high powered, dynamic offense. Quarterback Daxx Garman has played well but is still rather "green." And he's not getting much help from the run game with the Cowboys averaging  3.5 ypc vs. FBS opponents. Iowa State came into last week allowing over 5 ypc but held OSU to 3 ypc on 42 attempts. Head coach Mike Gundy says that the team's "vanilla" approach on offense will likely remain until sizable gains are made. Note that the total for Saturday's game at Kansas was bet down from 53.5 to 50.5.

"There's three things now," Gundy said. "One is Daxx. Two is the offensive line. And three, we can't run the ball very well. So we're basic vanilla for the most part.

"Until we improve in some areas, it's difficult to really get out of our box. We have to do the best we can with the inexperience we have at those positions."

Iowa State at Oklahoma State
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS1
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma State -17 O/U 62
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -17 O/U 65.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma State -17
OTTO Sports' Recommendation: Oklahoma State

If you run through Iowa State's scores, it would appear that the Cyclones are on the upswing with a near upset of Kansas State, a win at Iowa, and a spread cover/push vs. Baylor. Statistics, however, tell a different story. The Cyclones were badly outgained in their three losses to the tune of 1578-911 and on the season, ISU is -1.77 ypc and -1.29 ypp. Only against Iowa’s anemic offense was ISU able to play a team "even" from a box score perspective.

I don't downgrade Oklahoma State at all with Daxx Garman under center. He's struggled at times with his accuracy but makes up for it with his big play ability (10.7 ypa). It's a good matchup against Read more

College Football Gambling: Texas Tech moves forward with yet another defensive coordinator

09.23.2014     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Texas Tech at Oklahoma State -13

For the sixth year in a row, Texas Tech will start Big XII play with a new defensive coordinator. After Matt Wallerstedt "resigned" the Red Raiders promoted Mike Smith to serve as interim DC. Since beating Kansas 54-16 early last season, TTU has allowed 39.8 ppg over its last 11 games. Oklahoma State has scored 177 points vs. Tech Tech over the last three meetings.

“We’ll be faster,” Eguavoen said Monday. “I think there’s a little less in the game plan now, so we’re going to be looking less to the sideline to know what we’ve got to do next. It’s going to be more on-the-fly stuff. We’re going to be ready for each play.”

College Football Betting Preview: Florida State Seminoles vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Florida State vs. Oklahoma State
Saturday, 5 pm PT, Arlington - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -17 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Florida State -18 O/U 63.5
Paul's Recommendation: Florida State

Defending national champion Florida State and Big XII perennial contender Oklahoma State square off in Saturday's 2014 season opener at AT&T Stadium in Arlington also the site of the finals of the inaugural College Football Playoff. While the Seminoles return many of their key components and rank as the consensus choice to repeat as national champions, the Mike Gundy-coached Cowboys will be trotting out lineups of mostly first-time starters on both offense and defense. With just eight returning starters, four on both sides of the ball, Oklahoma State is one of the least experienced teams in any of the so-called Power Five Read more
