College Basketball Betting Free Play: Utah Utes at Oregon Ducks

Utah at Oregon -10.5 O/U 148.5
Recommendation: Under

PAC-12 conference play tips off tonight with the Utah Utes headed to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks. The matchup will have a far different look than a year ago with Oregon enduring a major roster turnover and Utah potentially without the services of a few key players. Both teams failed to impress during non-conference play with a combined 1-5 SU mark vs. teams currently inside Ken Pom's top 75. The Utes will be without the services of Donnie Tillman (10.7 ppg) and Chris Seely (4.7 ppg). And leading scorer David Collette (13.5 ppg) and fellow starter Gabe Bealer (8.3 ppg) are currently listed as questionable. Meanwhile Oregon lost nearly every key piece of last year's Final Four squad and it showed the first month of the season with losses to UConn and Boise State. They've since fired back with five straight wins though covered only twice. What stood out most to me in this matchup was the total. Dating back to 2013, Larry Krystkowiak and Dana Altman have faced each other 11 times. Not once did a game yield more than 70 possessions in regulation and not once did both teams combined for over 145 Read more

College Football Gambling: Bettors should be aware of coaching changes for bowl teams

12.07.2017     11:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There's obviously been a lot of coaching movement since the end of the regular season. Below we've got the details on who is expected to coach those teams playing in the postseason.

UCF - Scott Frost is headed to Nebraska but reports say he and his staff will stick around for the Peach Bowl (Jan. 1).

Missouri - Offensive coordinator Josh Heupel was hired to replace Frost. He won't have anything to do with UCF's bowl preparation and there is still no word on whether or not he'll call plays for Missouri's Texas Bowl (Dec. 27) matchup vs. Texas.

Oregon - Offensive coordinator Mario Cristobal will serve as interim head coach following the departure of Willie Taggart. The Ducks play Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl (Dec. 16).

UCLA - With Jim Mora Read more

College Football Betting: Utah and Oregon offenses limp into Saturday's matchup

10.24.2017     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The up-tempo experiment for Utah appears to be officially scrapped after the Utes lost their third straight game. It looked promising early on with quarterback Tyler Huntley scampering around and making plays. But Huntley's reckless style led to a Week 4 injury and a return to former starter Troy Williams. Williams is not an efficient signal caller (53% completions) and thus not ideal to run any type of "up-tempo" scheme. Williams was however solid (16-of-27, 262 yards) in Utah's 28-27 loss to USC but Huntley was healthy enough to start last week against Arizona State and ended up throwing four interceptions. Three straight losses, zero continuity at the quarterback position, and a head coach who has made a career out of playing it close to the vest suggests the Utes may run the ball 60 times this weekend in Eugene. And speaking of offensive struggles, Oregon has scored only 31 points during its own three-game slide. The Ducks have all but completely ditched the forward pass (28 attempts, 107 yards last two games). Three weeks ago, this total would have Read more

College Football Handicapping: Bettors are all over Oregon Ducks

09.05.2017     11:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After a disastrous 2016 that saw just two pointspread covers in 12 tries, the Oregon Ducks appear to be back in the good graces of bettors. Last Saturday, Oregon rolled up 703 totals yards en route to a 77-21 win over FCS Southern Utah. Oregon opened -31 but closed -39.5. This week, more betting support with the Ducks opening -10 vs. Nebraska and immediately bet up to -14. The Cornhuskers won last year's meeting in Lincoln, 35-32. The game pushed.

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Rhode Island Rams vs. Oregon Ducks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rhode Island +5 vs. Oregon O/U 141
Recommendation: Rhode Island

When we talk about impact injuries on the defensive end of the court, the Ducks loss of shot blocking center Chris Boucher really stands out. Boucher was not a great offensive player, but he was a low post difference maker on defense. In their first game without him in the lineup, the Ducks struggled to get stops, allowing 83 points on 58% shooting in the PAC-12 title game against Arizona. In their second game without Boucher, they allowed 77 points on 44% shooting to Iona.

The pointspread outcome in that game came down to the final possession despite the fact that the Ducks shot 56% from the floor and won the rebounding battle by 14. That’s certainly not a good sign moving forward, and Oregon is not a ‘value laden’ team at this stage of the campaign.

Rhode Island is on the other end of the ‘value’ equation. The Rams did not play their best basketball, struggling SU and ATS early and often in November, December and into January. Key contributors like senior low post stud Hassan Martin, junior point guard Jarvis Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Washington Huskies at California Golden Bears

Washington at California
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Washington -15.5 O/U 77.5
CRIS Current: Washington -17 O/U 76.5
Recommendation: California

There was a time, earlier in my handicapping career when I was fixated on taking strong defensive underdogs in college football; teams that could cover pointspreads without having to put up touchdowns in bunches. But that era of college football ended (without much fan fare from the betting markets), with the advent of the high octane spread offense, like the one Sonny Dykes is running at Cal these days.

In the football universe circa 2016, my entire thought process involving bigger underdogs has flipped from where it was 15 years ago.  In the modern world, I want my underdogs to be able to score early and often, even if they are defensively weak.  Teams that can put up points in bunches tend to be live underdogs, capable of trading points OR coming through the backdoor should they struggle early.

Underdogs of seven points or more are 4-1 ATS in Cal games this year, with the Bears unable to cover bigger Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers at Ohio State Buckeyes

Nebraska at Ohio State
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -13.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Ohio State -17 O/U 51.5
Recommendation: Ohio State

Ohio State knows that its only chance to get into the College Football Playoffs is to beat Michigan in the regular season finale. But before the Buckeyes get there, they must face Nebraska and then back-to-back road games at Maryland and Michigan State. As bettors, we don't pay a lot of attention to the Playoff Rankings but it's hard not to notice how generous they are towards the Big Ten with five teams in the top 12. One of those teams is Nebraska (10th) who somehow checks in ahead of Florida, LSU, Oklahoma and a few others they'd assuredly be an underdog to on a neutral field. So while Ohio State has its eye on November 26, this is an opportunity to beat a "quality" foe.

Following their loss to Penn State, the Buckeyes limped past Northwestern 24-20. They never trailed but the box score was very even. It was a classic "letdown" spot as OSU never sniffed a pointspread cover as -26 favorites. Note that OSU opened that game Read more

College Football Handicapping: Golden Nugget Game of the Year vs. CRIS - Week 6

10.03.2016     09:06 AM     Printer Friendly
Week 5's breakdown of Golden Nugget's Game of the Year lines vs. CRIS's current numbers. This is the first week where we really start to see some significant discrepancies. Texas A&M (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS) has seen its power rating steadily climb since the start of the season. Couple that with Tennessee's improbable win over Florida and bettors took the Aggies from -5 to -7. Meanwhile, there has been a 10-point swing in the Florida State-Miami game. And 9.5 with Oregon-Washington as the Ducks fell to 2-3 SU (0-4 ATS) and undefeated Huskies now in the playoff discussion.

College Football Betting Preview: Central Florida Knights at East Carolina Pirates

Central Florida at East Carolina
Saturday, 9 am PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener:
East Carolina -6 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: East Carolina -4 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: Central Florida

UCF went 0-12 last year.  Ten of their losses came by two touchdowns or more, as they should have – George O’Leary’s final season was a complete disaster.  That included a late November 44-7 home loss at the hands of East Carolina.  That was then, this is now.

First-year head coach Scott Frost has made it very clear what he wants to install for the Golden Knights.  The former Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator wants to become “Oregon of the East."  Frost found his starting quarterback two weeks ago when previous starter Justin Holman got hurt.  In two games behind center, frosh McKenzie Milton; a dual threat dynamo against both Maryland and FIU.

Here’s Frost’s quote: “One of the things that drew me to the job is I knew I could run a version of our offense that was practically identical to Oregon's because we Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers at Northwestern Wildcats

Nebraska at Northwestern
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - BTN
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -6 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -7.5 O/U 48
Recommendation: Nebraska

Big Ten gets underway on Saturday as the Northwestern Wildcats host the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Last week, our free play selection cashed as Northwestern picked up its first victory of the season with a 24-13 win over Duke. Tied 7-7 at halftime, the Wildcats finally were able to get their offense going with 17 second half points. They finished with 320 passing yards (8.2 per play) and for the first time all year topped the 400 total yardage barrier. Now they will face a Nebraska squad coming off of a massive 35-32 home win over Oregon. The Huskers used a balance attack of passing and rushing to work over a suspect Ducks’ defense. They also picked up some big plays on special teams, notably De'Mourney Pearson-El's punt return at the end of the first half that led to a TD to help rally back from an initial 20-7 deficit. Oregon didn't help its cause with 13 penalties for 126 yards.

Last year’s meeting saw Northwestern pick up a close 30-28 Read more
