College Football Gambling: Oregon State's Andersen resigns

10.10.2017     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A brutal schedule (SOS #2) and one of the worst power conference defenses in the country (45.0 ppg, 128th) were enough reasons for Oregon State head coach Gary Andersen to abruptly leave his post this past weekend. Assistant Cory Hall will step in as the interim head coach. Hall doesn't have much coaching experience. He was a graduate assistant with Andersen at Wisconsin and coached the secondaries at Weber State and Oregon State. The Beavers get a slightly more manageable foe this week with Colorado headed to town. The Buffs are currently -11.5 road chalk.

College Football Gambling Update: Oregon State without two defensive starters vs. Washington State

UPDATE

Someone just found the lighter fluid.

“Losing your top two corners … is that tough? Absolutely,” Beavers coach Gary Andersen said Tuesday during the Pac-12 teleconference.

Generally, college football dumpster fires aren't spotted until Week 5 or 6-ish. That allows for just enough time for a team to suffer a few bad losses, the coach to get chippy with the media for grilling him about the situation, a failed rally-the-troops game, a bye week, and another bad loss. But while not an inferno, flames have been spotted in Corvallis. Oregon State was justifiably pegged by a lot of bettors to be much improved in Gary Andersen's third season. In 2016, the Beavers were outgained by only 0.20 yards per play in PAC-12 play and covered nine of 12 games. But after getting waxed by Colorado State in their opener and limping past FCS Portland State in Week 2, red flags started to appear. Last week, the Beavers were again outplayed from start to finish in a 48-14 loss to Minnesota. Needless to say, Andersen is pissed. And after fairly strong support from the markets (+1 to -2.5), bettors have all but quit on this team with Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oregon State Beavers at Mississippi State Bulldogs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon State at Mississippi State -8 O/U 130.5
Recommendation: Under

Points could be at a premium tonight in Starkville as Oregon State and Mississippi State will each be without their top offensive weapons. Tres Tinkle is the only player on the Beavers with an offensive rating north of 100. He's out indefinitely with a wrist injury. Even with Tinkle on the floor, OSU's offense has been a mess with one of the nation's highest turnover rates (25.8%), lowest three-point percentages (26.4%), and less than a point per possession despite an ultra-soft schedule. Center Drew Eubanks now becomes Oregon State's top option as evident by the 21 shots he took in Monday's win over NAIA Southern Oregon. Two years ago, Oregon State was able to compete by slowing down the tempo and playing various zone defenses. I expect that head coach Wayne Tinkle will attempt to shorten games moving forward due to the lack of weapons and experience. Mississippi State played a bunch of high scoring affairs early on thanks to Quinndary Weatherspoon's 18.8 ppg. He's missed the last two games and the Bulldogs netted only 73 points on 74 possessions vs. Lehigh and 65 points on 66 Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Washington State Cougars at Oregon State Beavers

Washington State at Oregon State
Saturday, 7:45 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Washington State -15.5 O/U 65.5
CRIS Current: Washington State -13 O/U 57
Recommendation: Oregon State

My clients and I cashed in betting against Washington State as road chalk last week in a closer-than-expected non-covering win at Arizona State.  And there’s absolutely no reason to think that the Cougs are being priced appropriately as double-digit road favorites as they travel to Corvallis on Saturday night.

This is the wrong price range for Washington State in a very hostile road environment.  It’s also the wrong pointspread range for an Oregon State team that has been getting killed on the highway, but consistently playing competitive football at Reser Stadium.

There’s been one very consistent facet of Mike Leach coached teams, dating back to his tenure at Texas Tech – they have letdowns, not a coach who’s prone to guiding his team to extended winning streaks.  In his fifth season at Washington State, the Cougars current five game winning streak is the longest Read more

College Football Betting News: Oregon State down to third string quarterback

10.18.2016     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Multiple injuries have Oregon State tapping deep into its depth chart for a starting quarterback. Third stringer Marcus McMaryion is expected to start Saturday's game against Washington. McMaryion played in seven games last season but completed only 40% of his passes. Look for the Beavers to stick to the ground after running the ball 85 times (335 ypg) in recent pointspread covers over California and Utah.

"He knows it's his team right now," Andersen said of McMaryion. "He'll be a leader. He'll take care of his business. He'll have high expectations for himself."

Utah at Oregon State
Saturday, 1 pm PT - PAC-12
CRIS Opener:
Utah -13 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Utah -7.5 O/U 40
Recommendation: Under

The biggest totals move on the board and it appears justified as the weather in Corvallis, Oregon is projected to be hurricane-esque on Saturday. Current weather reports are not only calling for heavy rain but winds of 30-40 MPH. And it's important to note that Reser Stadium is not enclosed meaning that wind will have little issue entering the stadium. The forward pass should be all but nonexistent in this contest.

Oregon State shows a strong statistical profile running the football but the stats are heavily skewed due to games against FCS Idaho State and defensively inept Cal. The Beavers racked up 70% of their seasonal yardage (730 yards) in those two games. In their three contests against Minnesota, Boise State, and Colorado, OSU averaged a measly 3.0 ypc. Utah grades out as above average against the run having allowed just over 4.0 ypc. In last year's meeting, the Utes held the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Oregon State hopes to be competitive during rebuild

07.25.2016     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nowhere to go but up for Oregon State second-year head coach Gary Andersen. The Beavers went winless in PAC-12 play last year and in the process managed to allow 42.3 ppg. Anderson brought in former Utah State DC Kevin Clune to take over the defense and promoted Kevin McGiven (QBs coach) and TJ Woods (o-line coach) to serve as co-OCs. Chuckie Keeton has also been added to the staff. OSU appears to have upgraded at the quarterback position as former Utah State starter Darell Garretson who filled in for the oft-injured Keeton has already been named the starter. The Beavers finished last season with a sub-100 team QB rating after using three freshmen. Oregon State went 6-18 ATS over the past two seasons and is likely to be underdogs in all 11 games against FBS competition in 2016.

UCLA at Oregon State -2.5 O/U 145
Recommendation: Under

UCLA's schedule through 18 games has been littered with teams that prefer to play with pace or can score at an efficient rate or a combination of both. On the season, the Bruins have faced the 8th toughest schedule in terms of opponent's offensive efficiency. I won't try to portray the Bruins as a good defensive team but tonight should serve as a step down in class as Oregon State's offense has struggled to score at times. And from a situational angle, you would expect both teams to bring effort on the defensive end with this being a very important game as they sit 2-3 in league play. UCLA's Bryce Alford on his team's defense of late: "We go a couple possessions in a row, or even a couple games in a row, where we play pretty decent defense," guard Bryce Alford said. "And then all of a sudden, I don't know what it is, but all of a sudden you have a lot of shutdowns, a lot of places where you break down. And you can't have that." UCLA isn't going to turn into a lock down unit overnight but again, the PAC-12 schedule hasn't been friendly with the Bruins yet to play Cal, Read more
