MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers

Cleveland (Tomlin) at Detroit (Liriano) +125 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Detroit

A month and a half into the season and only two games separate the Cleveland Indians (20-20) and Detroit Tigers (18-22) in the standings. The separation between the two squads will undoubtedly grow as the season progresses but even when we account for projection and overall gap in talent, I have a hard time buying into Josh Tomlin as a -135 road favorite. Tomlin, who sports an 8.06 ERA and even worse 9.69 FIP, hasn't pitched in 10 days. Perhaps his only redeeming quality is that he tossed five scoreless innings against Detroit back on April 10; a game that featured a very pitcher friendly 38 degrees. Yes, the Tigers are without Miguel Cabrera. But without Cabrera, the Tigers have still managed to produced offensively. In 10 games since he hit the DL, Detroit is 5-5 an has averaged 4.4 runs per game. And unlike Tomlin, Francisco Liriano has been rock solid with three runs or less allowed in all seven starts. He's ripe for a little regression (.226 BABIP) but is far more trustworthy than his counterpart for this evening. This matchup should be line at or Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels

Baltimore (Tillman) at Los Angeles (Barria) -185 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

Rare situation for Baltimore's Chris Tillman who enters tonight's matchup vs. the Angels off not only a quality start but also a win. Between his last win which came on May 7, 2017 and last Friday's victory over the Tigers, Tillman had allowed exactly 100 earned runs over 105.1 innings. This season's draw has been a tough one with the veteran righty facing Houston, New York, and Boston all on the road as well as Cleveland. But there are no indications that sustained success is on the horizon, even against more favorable opponents in pitcher friendly parks. In fact, Tillman's average fastball against the Tigers was only 88 MPH; the lowest mark of his 10-year career. Twenty-one-year-old Jaime Barria projects to be part of the Angels' rotation in the future. The righty isn't overpowering but flashed a sub-3.00 ERA over three minor league levels last year and got the win in his debut at Texas going five innings and allowed only one run. He was however smacked around in his second outing (2 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER vs. San Francisco) and was sent back down to Triple-A. Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at Cleveland Indians

Chicago (Chatwood) -105 at Cleveland (Tomlin) O/U 9
Recommendation: Chicago

Tough to expect much sharpness out of Cleveland's Josh Tomlin who hasn't started a game since April 10. Tomlin was forced into action in the 15th inning of last Wednesday's game against Minnesota. Overall, Tomlin has thrown only 1 inning (37 pitches) over the last 12 days. That doesn't bode well against a surging Chicago Cubs offense. After netting just one run in back-to-back games two weeks ago, the Cubs have pounded out 52 runs over their last six games. Tyler Chatwood's stuff thus far has been almost too good with 18 strikeouts and 14 walks in 15.2 innings. This isn't however a bad matchup as Cleveland currently ranks near the bottom of MLB in offensive production including the third lowest walk rate (7.7%). Chicago should also have the bullpen edge having had yesterday off. Note than Cleveland relievers Cody Allen and Andrew Miller, who have yet to allow an earned run this season, threw on both Sunday and Monday and are unlikely to be available tonight. Eliminate the duo and the Tribe's pen ERA jumps a run and a half. At the nearl pick 'em price we'll Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Milwaukee Brewers at San Diego Padres

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mulwaukee (Chacin) -125 at San Diego (Lucchesi) O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

Only three runs combined in last night's opener at Petco Park as the Brewers won in 12 innings, 2-1. Even with the bullpens getting an early season workout, we'll look for another low scoring game tonight. The Padres will send rookie Joey Lucchesi to the hill. Lucchesi is a former 4th rounder out of college who rolled through Single-A and Double-A. He's a lefty with a funky delivery that should be effective the first time through the league.

"...Watch him when he’s pitching. His stuff plays. There’s real deception to it. It’s tough to pick up.

“It’s a real three-pitch mix that is going to play well at the big league level. The word to him is just go pitch like you’ve always pitched. Don’t worry about the venue, the setting, the scenario. Just go pitch.”

Milwaukee will counter with former Padres Jhoulys Chacin who while an average MLB starter has had plenty of success in this venue. Over the span of 18 career starts and 115 IP Chacin sports a 2.03 ERA in Petco Read more

UNC Asheville +16.5 at USC O/U 152
Recommendation: UNC Asheville

Sometimes, power ratings, pointspreads, and matchups don't mean a thing in these secondary tournaments. Two of the biggest factors come down to travel and motivation. Both factors are pulling against one another in tonight's UNC-Asheville-USC matchup. The Bulldogs, who won the Big South regular season, will make the cross country trek to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the Trojans were arguably the most deserving team to not get into the NCAA Tournament and are justifiably upset.

“The feeling is the same,’ Enfield said of frustration held over from Sunday’s bracket reveal. “It doesn’t go away in a day. Because we should be in the NCAA Tournament. We deserve to be, and we’re one of the best at-large teams out there.”

Enfield went as far as to say he may sit players who are not 100 percent healthy and/or could risk injury and thus damage their stock as a pro prospect. And by all accounts, if it was up to Enfield and his players, they would have passed on the NIT bid. USC is talented enough to beat Asheville Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Creighton Bluejays at DePaul Blue Demons

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Creighton -6.5 at DePaul O/U 155
Recommendation: Creighton

Since winning at St. John's, 91-74, as +7.5 underdogs, DePaul hasn't played very good basketball. They've dropped five of six both straight up and ATS; never coming close to a cover in any of the five defeats. This is a squad that is trying to compete in the Big East with arguably its best player, Max Strus, a DII transfer. Strus is solid but after averaging 23.5 ppg his first four Big East games, he's dropped off considerably including 9- and 7-point efforts his last two contests; both of which blowout losses. Creighton has a huge home game vs. Xavier on deck but I don't think they'll get caught looking ahead, especially after losing by 20 to Villanova last week. The Bluejays have had nearly a full week to rest and prepare and have had no trouble with the Blue Demons in recent meetings with wins by 11, 22, 17, and 35. Last season, DePaul's defecincies led to pointspread covers in six of its final seven regular season Big East games. The average price in those six games, however, was +13. The same deficiencies are present this season but because of two road wins against Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Indiana Hoosiers at Illinois Fighting Illini

Indiana at Illinois -2 O/U 143.5
Recommendation: Illinois

You heard Tom Izzo say after Michigan State's win on Monday night that Illinois was "the best 0-8 team in the country." You could also call them one of the unluckiest teams in the country with three overtime losses and another by a single point. The Illini are still a "bottom tier" Big Ten squad but a couple of bounces their way and instead of 0-8, they could easily be 3-5 or even 4-4. Indiana, meanwhile, is a surprising 5-3 in league play with three of their five wins coming by four points or less. Under Archie Miller, it's clear the Hoosiers are improving. Since their embarrassing 20-point home loss to Fort Wayne, IU has won and covered six of eight. Illinois put a ton of effort into Monday's game against Michigan State in which they forced 25 turnovers. This is a short turnaround and matching that intensity for 40 minutes could be tricky. But Brad Underwood is an excellent motivator and should have his squad ready to go. Keep in mind, under Underwood, Oklahoma State started Big XII play 0-6 and ripped off 10 of 11. He doesn't have the horses to do that in Champaign but you Read more
