College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Arizona State Sun Devils

USC at Arizona State
Saturday, 7:45 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: USC -3 O/U 58
CRIS Current: USC -3.5 O/U 59
Recommendation: USC

Arizona State is one of the most interesting teams in college football. One one hand you have a team with three outright wins at double-digit underdogs. On the other hand, a statistical profile that is downright ugly. Despite their 4-3 overall, 3-1 PAC-12 records, the Sun Devils have been outgained by nearly a full yard per play (6.19 ypp allowed, 5.22 ypp gained) this season. And you can also make a case that a majority of ASU's opponents were later discovered to be overrated. San Diego State has recently been exposed as has Texas Tech. Since losing in Tempe, Oregon has dropped three of four; albeit with a backup quarterback. Washington was clearly living off last year's accomplishments and an ultra-soft schedule and Utah has been dealing with a lack of stability at the quarterback position. To call ASU a complete "fraud" is probably too harsh, but I have a hard time buying into this squad despite a handful of at-the-time impressive Read more

College Football Betting: Utah and Oregon offenses limp into Saturday's matchup

10.24.2017     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The up-tempo experiment for Utah appears to be officially scrapped after the Utes lost their third straight game. It looked promising early on with quarterback Tyler Huntley scampering around and making plays. But Huntley's reckless style led to a Week 4 injury and a return to former starter Troy Williams. Williams is not an efficient signal caller (53% completions) and thus not ideal to run any type of "up-tempo" scheme. Williams was however solid (16-of-27, 262 yards) in Utah's 28-27 loss to USC but Huntley was healthy enough to start last week against Arizona State and ended up throwing four interceptions. Three straight losses, zero continuity at the quarterback position, and a head coach who has made a career out of playing it close to the vest suggests the Utes may run the ball 60 times this weekend in Eugene. And speaking of offensive struggles, Oregon has scored only 31 points during its own three-game slide. The Ducks have all but completely ditched the forward pass (28 attempts, 107 yards last two games). Three weeks ago, this total would have Read more

College Football Gambling: Cal loses leading tackler; Arizona steamed to -3

10.17.2017     10:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
California's defense has been one of the biggest surprises in college football this season. For the year, the Golden Bears have allowed only 5.35 yards per play; a 1.3 ypp improvement over 2016. And they haven't been racking up numbers against soft competition with four games against teams currently ranked in the top 35 nationally in total offense. But now they'll without the team's leading tackler, linebacker Devante Downs, who will miss the remainder of the season due to injury. The loss of Downs could be especially costly this week with the Golden Bears playing host to Arizona. The Wildcats rank fourth in the country in rushing (342.3 ypg); first among non-option teams. And you can bet Downs would have been tasked with trying to keep this dude in check. Cal opened -1.5 but a flood of money now has Arizona -3 across the board.

College Football Betting Preview: UCLA Bruins at Arizona Wildcats

UCLA at Arizona
Saturday, 6 pm PT - PAC-12 Network
CRIS Opener: Arizona pk O/U 74.5
CRIS Current: UCLA -2.5 O/U 74
Recommendation: UCLA

Bye weeks are very meaningful in college football. Banged up players get a chance to get healthy. Coaches have extra time to shore up flaws and prepare gameplans. Players get a much needed break and tend to come back with full focus. As we approach the college football season’s halfway point, we should take note to adjust power ratings up a notch or two for teams coming off their break.

UCLA is in that exact situation this week. The Bruins faced a brutal non-conference slate, including Texas A&M and Memphis. They opened their PAC-12 slate with Stanford and Colorado. The Arizona team they’ll face on Saturday Night is as weak as any foe they’ve seen all year, with the lone exception of Hawaii. And it’s surely worth noting that the Bruins beat Hawaii 56-23, covering the spread as 24 point favorites.

The Bruins defense currently ranks #128 in the country against the run, allowing 284 yards per Read more

College Football Gambling: Oregon State's Andersen resigns

10.10.2017     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A brutal schedule (SOS #2) and one of the worst power conference defenses in the country (45.0 ppg, 128th) were enough reasons for Oregon State head coach Gary Andersen to abruptly leave his post this past weekend. Assistant Cory Hall will step in as the interim head coach. Hall doesn't have much coaching experience. He was a graduate assistant with Andersen at Wisconsin and coached the secondaries at Weber State and Oregon State. The Beavers get a slightly more manageable foe this week with Colorado headed to town. The Buffs are currently -11.5 road chalk.

College Football Betting Preview: Ole Miss Rebels at California Golden Bears

Ole Miss at California
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Ole Miss -3.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: Ole Miss -3.5 O/U 71.5
Recommendation: Under

California's defense is not going to be fixed overnight. The bad recruiting, bad coaching, and bad habits from the Sonny Dykes era are bound to linger. The good news is through two games, the Golden Bears are nearly a yard per play better than last season. And while last week's win over FCS Weber State doesn't look all that impressive (the Wildcats rolled up 571 yards), I look more to Week 1's results as Cal went on the road and held North Carolina to less than 5 yards per play. The Tar Heels lost a lot of offensive firepower but they also managed to hang 35 points and 6.5 yards per play the following week against Louisville.

Back in 2014 and 2015, Ole Miss' defense was a top-tier unit as it posted season averages of 4.7 and 4.9 yards per allowed, respectively. They took a big step back last year as teams rolled up over 6 yards per play and the Rebels finished a dismal 5-7. This year's unit has been average thus far as Read more

UCLA at Memphis
Saturday, 9 am PT
CRIS Opener: UCLA-4.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: UCLA -3 O/U 72
Recommendation: Memphis

The scoreboard results look decent for UCLA, with a 2-0 mark to open the season. Josh Rosen has put up some huge numbers, throwing for 820 yards with nine touchdowns and zero interceptions against Texas A&M and Hawaii. And yet, despite those monster stats from Rosen, the Bruins have all the makings of a bet-against team in early start TV action on Saturday.

Let’s start with this: Rosen has zero interceptions only because Texas A&M dropped the ball, with Rosen every bit as lucky as he was good in the Aggies late defensive meltdown. And we need to note the miserable spot here for the Bruins. They’ve got a major revenge matchup with Stanford on deck, coming off a remarkable comeback and an easy blowout. This game reeks of a legitimate flat spot for the road favorite, especially when we consider the noon Eastern Time start – that’s 9 AM on the body clocks for the kids from the West Coast.

College Football Gambling Update: Oregon State without two defensive starters vs. Washington State

Generally, college football dumpster fires aren't spotted until Week 5 or 6-ish. That allows for just enough time for a team to suffer a few bad losses, the coach to get chippy with the media for grilling him about the situation, a failed rally-the-troops game, a bye week, and another bad loss. But while not an inferno, flames have been spotted in Corvallis. Oregon State was justifiably pegged by a lot of bettors to be much improved in Gary Andersen's third season. In 2016, the Beavers were outgained by only 0.20 yards per play in PAC-12 play and covered nine of 12 games. But after getting waxed by Colorado State in their opener and limping past FCS Portland State in Week 2, red flags started to appear. Last week, the Beavers were again outplayed from start to finish in a 48-14 loss to Minnesota. Needless to say, Andersen is pissed. And after fairly strong support from the markets (+1 to -2.5), bettors have all but quit on this team with Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Stanford Cardinal at USC Trojans

Stanford at USC
Saturday, 5:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: USC

Key early season conference tilt in the PAC-12 with Stanford heading to USC. The Cardinal got the better of the Trojans last season, 27-10, in a similar conference opener setting. The results should reverse on Saturday as Stanford has the dubious task of coming in off of what I believe to be an unproductive bye week after opening the season with a 62-7 blowout win in Australia over weakling Rice. Last season, Stanford opened with a win over Kansas State, had a bye week, and they dispatched the Trojans in Palo Alto. While that appears similar situation-wise, there are some distinct differences. For one, Stanford never left campus. Their win over Kansas State was at home, followed by a bye, and then another home game vs. USC. And the Wildcats served as a "real" opponent, one that no doubt helped better prepare Stanford for its looming matchup against the Trojans. There was no resistance whatsoever in Week 1 as Rice grades out as one of the worst Read more
