Sportsbooks post prop bets on tonight's NFL Draft

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
They are calling it the least anticipated NFL Draft in years but that hasn't stopped various sportsbooks from posting prop bets on tonight's first round (NFL Network, 5 pm PT). Below are lines from both Bookmaker and The Greek. You know it's a lame draft when the over/under on number of running backs in the first round is one (with juice to the under) and Geno Smith is considered by many to be the top quarterback prospect.

College Basketball Gambling: Referees go after Arizona's Sean Miller

04.02.2013     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly
Remember Ed Rush? Back in the day he was the NBA's head of officiating. Dallas owner Mark Cuban famously said that he wouldn't hire Ed Rush to run a Dairy Queen. Well news has come out that Rush, who is currently the head of officiating for the PAC-12, told his minions to give Arizona head coach Sean Miller the business during the PAC-12 Tournament. Miller, who doesn't come off a very demonstrative, was issued a very questionable technical foul in what ended up being a semifinal loss to UCLA. And according to reports, the ref who slapped Miller with the "T" didn't have "that type of mentality." And for those of you scoring at home, Arizona outshot UCLA from the floor and from three and was +7 on the glass. The difference in the game was fouls and free throws. UCLA attempted 21 free throws and was Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The first weekend of the Madness is in the history books and only 16 teams remain standing in the NCAA Tournament.   The two best conferences in the regular season – the Big Ten and the Big East – proved to be the two best conferences in the Big Dance, sending seven teams to the Sweet Sixteen.  The ACC and the PAC-12 were the only two other conferences to send multiple teams onto the second weekend of the Big Dance.

This week, I’ll be taking a look at the sixteen remaining teams in the field; assessing their chances for tournament success as the field gets reduced to the Final Four this coming weekend.  Teams are listed in rotation order.

Syracuse is drawing comparisons to the UConn team that won it all two years ago.  The Orange, like the Huskies, slumped down the stretch of the regular season.  Like the Huskies, they came on strong in the Big East tournament, rebuilding their confidence in the process.  Also like UConn, Syracuse has all kinds of NBA ready talent. Michael Carter-Williams, James Southerland and Brandon Triche are all expected to be drafted this spring.  Don’t Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: No. 12 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 4 Saint Louis Billikens

Oregon at Saint Louis -4 O/U 125
Recommendation: Saint Louis

Saint Louis is real deal; the best mid-major team in the country right now (sorry, Gonzaga).  And the Billikens are as hot as any team in the country right now; 16-1 SU in their last 17 games, the lone loss coming on the road in overtime at Xavier.

SLU hasn’t just been winning – it has been killing teams!  Twelve of their 16 wins during this span have come by double-digit margins and none have come by less than four points; enough to cover Saturday’s spread.  We’re not just talking about beating patsies either – three wins over Butler, two over VCU, along with blowouts over LaSalle, Dayton and St Joe’s.

And look at how well the Atlantic-10 conference has done here in the postseason! In the Big Dance alone, we’ve seen Temple’s win over NC State, VCU’s blowout over Akron, Saint Louis’s smackdown over Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 10 Colorado Buffaloes vs. No. 7 Illinois Fighting Illini

NCAA Tournament – East Region
Friday, 12:40 pm PT, Austin, Texas
No. 10 Colorado vs. No. 7 Illinois
CRIS Opener: Illinois -1 O/U 128.5
CRIS Current: Illinois -1.5 O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Colorado

It’s been a tale of two seasons for Illinois.  The Illini started the campaign a perfect 12-0, while climbing just short of a top 10 tanking.  Their perfect start to the season included solid wins against Gonzaga and Butler.  But their start doesn’t even tell half of the story, as the Illini finished the season winning just 10 of their next 22 games.  Since the calendar turned to 2013 Illinois simply hasn’t played NCAA Tournament caliber basketball.   To put things into perspective my final Big 10 power ratings featured Iowa five full points better than Illinois, while being rated equal to Purdue!  Obviously, with this type of rating, I’m looking to fade this squad from a value Read more

NCAA Tournament - Midwest Region
Thursday, 1:40 pm PT, at San Jose, Calif.
No. 12 Oregon vs. No. 5 Oklahoma State
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma State -3.5 O/U 135
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -3 O/U 135
Recommendation: Oregon

The Oregon Ducks, like most NCAA Tournament teams, had their ups and downs this season but much of their struggles can be attributed to having to adjust to being without starting pointguard Dominic Artis. He suffered a foot injury against Washington State on January 23rd. Prior to that game, Oregon was 16-2 SU and 9-7 ATS. Following the Artis injury, Oregon went into a mini tailspin going 4-4 SU but only 1-7 ATS. Since Artis’s return against Oregon State on February 28th, Oregon has showed signs of getting back on track including a perfect 3-0 SU run in the PAC-12 Tournament.

Artis hasn’t scored more than six points in a game since his return and he was scoreless in 13 minutes of action in Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at Stanford Cardinal

Stephen F. Austin +8.5 at Stanford O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Stephen F. Austin

I'm a little surprised Stanford decided to give head coach Johnny Dawkins another year but as a bettor I won't complain because under Dawkins this team has been a consistent underachiever. As for the NIT, I have my concerns about the Cardinal and their motivation considering they won the event last season. And they get a first round opponent that they simply can't just show up and beat. Stephen F. Austin is a quality mid-major with wins at Tulsa, Oklahoma and Long Beach State. The Lumberjacks also lost at Texas A&M by eight points. They play at a slow place and thrive on the defensive end of the floor (42.1% eFG, 29.0% 3-point, 88.2 ppp allowed). SFA's stout three-point defense is particularly noteworthy considering Stanford shot 41.1% in PAC-12 play which accounted for 32% of its points. Look for the underdog to stick around in this one.

Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers takes a look at 28 NCAA Tournament matchups

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With the madness that is March now in full swing, it’s time to take a look through the brackets.  Today, I’ll offer a quick take on the 28 matchups already set for Thursday and Friday.  Games are listed in rotation order.

Missouri spent the entire season losing close games on the road, falling in OT at UCLA and Kentucky, while dropping games by three points or less at Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas A&M, LSU and to Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament.  Larry Eustachy got the most he could out of Colorado State’s talent level this year, but the Rams, too, lost nearly every step-up game on the highway.

As a No. 3 seed, Marquette is only a 3.5-point favorite over No. 14 seed Davidson.  The betting markets clearly respect the Wildcats five upperclassmen starters that started 30 of their 33 previous games together this season.

Butler has won at least the first two games of every single postseason tournament they’ve played since 2010, including runs in the Horizon League and A-10 conference tourney’s, two runs to the championship Read more

College Basketball Betting: USC down two players heading into PAC-12 Tournament

03.13.2013     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Utah vs. USC pk O/U 123.5

Earlier this week, USC suspended centers Dewayne Dedmon and James Blasczyk indefinately for their roles in a brawl during the team's recent trip to Washington State. Dedmon is averaging 6.7 ppg and a team-best 7.0 rpg. Blasczyk was more of a role player. Head coach Bob Cantu says the team is focused and ready to move forward. It'll be interesting to see what type of impact this has on the pace of the game. The Trojans are going to be smaller which suggests a faster tempo. But with a lack of bodies, they may want to keep everyone fresh and play a more methodical pace.

''The message is, let's move forward and let's win,'' Cantu said. ''This is the game plan for Utah and this is what we need to do. I was actually very impressed Read more
