College Football Betting Preview: Ole Miss Rebels at California Golden Bears

Ole Miss at California
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Ole Miss -3.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: Ole Miss -3.5 O/U 71.5
Recommendation: Under

California's defense is not going to be fixed overnight. The bad recruiting, bad coaching, and bad habits from the Sonny Dykes era are bound to linger. The good news is through two games, the Golden Bears are nearly a yard per play better than last season. And while last week's win over FCS Weber State doesn't look all that impressive (the Wildcats rolled up 571 yards), I look more to Week 1's results as Cal went on the road and held North Carolina to less than 5 yards per play. The Tar Heels lost a lot of offensive firepower but they also managed to hang 35 points and 6.5 yards per play the following week against Louisville.

Back in 2014 and 2015, Ole Miss' defense was a top-tier unit as it posted season averages of 4.7 and 4.9 yards per allowed, respectively. They took a big step back last year as teams rolled up over 6 yards per play and the Rebels finished a dismal 5-7. This year's unit has been average thus far as Read more

College Football Gambling Preview: UCLA Bruins at Memphis Tigers

UCLA at Memphis
Saturday, 9 am PT
CRIS Opener: UCLA-4.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: UCLA -3 O/U 72
Recommendation: Memphis

The scoreboard results look decent for UCLA, with a 2-0 mark to open the season. Josh Rosen has put up some huge numbers, throwing for 820 yards with nine touchdowns and zero interceptions against Texas A&M and Hawaii. And yet, despite those monster stats from Rosen, the Bruins have all the makings of a bet-against team in early start TV action on Saturday.

Let’s start with this: Rosen has zero interceptions only because Texas A&M dropped the ball, with Rosen every bit as lucky as he was good in the Aggies late defensive meltdown. And we need to note the miserable spot here for the Bruins. They’ve got a major revenge matchup with Stanford on deck, coming off a remarkable comeback and an easy blowout. This game reeks of a legitimate flat spot for the road favorite, especially when we consider the noon Eastern Time start – that’s 9 AM on the body clocks for the kids from the West Coast.

College Football Gambling Update: Oregon State without two defensive starters vs. Washington State

UPDATE

Someone just found the lighter fluid.

“Losing your top two corners … is that tough? Absolutely,” Beavers coach Gary Andersen said Tuesday during the Pac-12 teleconference.

Generally, college football dumpster fires aren't spotted until Week 5 or 6-ish. That allows for just enough time for a team to suffer a few bad losses, the coach to get chippy with the media for grilling him about the situation, a failed rally-the-troops game, a bye week, and another bad loss. But while not an inferno, flames have been spotted in Corvallis. Oregon State was justifiably pegged by a lot of bettors to be much improved in Gary Andersen's third season. In 2016, the Beavers were outgained by only 0.20 yards per play in PAC-12 play and covered nine of 12 games. But after getting waxed by Colorado State in their opener and limping past FCS Portland State in Week 2, red flags started to appear. Last week, the Beavers were again outplayed from start to finish in a 48-14 loss to Minnesota. Needless to say, Andersen is pissed. And after fairly strong support from the markets (+1 to -2.5), bettors have all but quit on this team with Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Stanford Cardinal at USC Trojans

Stanford at USC
Saturday, 5:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: USC

Key early season conference tilt in the PAC-12 with Stanford heading to USC. The Cardinal got the better of the Trojans last season, 27-10, in a similar conference opener setting. The results should reverse on Saturday as Stanford has the dubious task of coming in off of what I believe to be an unproductive bye week after opening the season with a 62-7 blowout win in Australia over weakling Rice. Last season, Stanford opened with a win over Kansas State, had a bye week, and they dispatched the Trojans in Palo Alto. While that appears similar situation-wise, there are some distinct differences. For one, Stanford never left campus. Their win over Kansas State was at home, followed by a bye, and then another home game vs. USC. And the Wildcats served as a "real" opponent, one that no doubt helped better prepare Stanford for its looming matchup against the Trojans. There was no resistance whatsoever in Week 1 as Rice grades out as one of the worst Read more

College Football Betting: BYU says changes are coming to offense

09.06.2017     08:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
BYU's offense will reportedly make various "changes" after failing to cross midfield in last week's 27-0 loss to LSU. The week prior, against FCS Portland State, the Cougars managed a modest 365 yards and 20 points. Head coach Kalani Sitake wasn't shy about telling his offensive coordinator, Ty Detmer, to get things figured out. Prior to Detmer's arrival, BYU averaged 33.7 ppg and over 6 yards per play with current starter Tanner Mangum posting a 23-10 TD-to-INT ratio as a freshman. Last season under Detmer, the team's QB Rating (118.1) ranked 101st. BYU is currently a +1 home underdog to rival Utah.

“I know I’m coming down hard on the offense but, man, let’s be honest,” Sitake said. “That was the issue. Ty knows that and our offensive players know that, so we will fix it.”

“You have to change it,” Sitake said during Monday’s media interviews. “There is no staying the course when it is not working well. (Offensive

College Football Handicapping: Bettors are all over Oregon Ducks

09.05.2017     11:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After a disastrous 2016 that saw just two pointspread covers in 12 tries, the Oregon Ducks appear to be back in the good graces of bettors. Last Saturday, Oregon rolled up 703 totals yards en route to a 77-21 win over FCS Southern Utah. Oregon opened -31 but closed -39.5. This week, more betting support with the Ducks opening -10 vs. Nebraska and immediately bet up to -14. The Cornhuskers won last year's meeting in Lincoln, 35-32. The game pushed.

College Football Gambling: UCLA was at one point +30.5 in-game and won outright

09.05.2017     11:11 AM     Printer Friendly
There were a lot of crazy Week 1 college football results, none crazier than UCLA's comeback win over Texas A&M. Down 34 late in the third quarter, the Bruins rallied back to win 45-44. It was an interesting game from a betting perspective as well. For starters, UCLA took a TON of money, closing as high as -7 after opening -3 (and for a short time bet down to -2.5). Then of course there was UCLA's in-game line progression from start to finish: -7.5, -4.5, pk, +6.5, +13.5, +14.5, +17.5, +20.5, +17.5, +21.5, +24.5, +28.5, +30.5, +26.5, +21.5, +18.5, +12.5, pk, and then this happened...

College Football Betting Preview: California Golden Bears at North Carolina Tar Heels

Calfornia at North Carolina
Saturday, 9:20 am PT - ACC Network
CRIS Opener: North Carolina -12.5 O/U 66
CRIS Current: North Carolina -13 O/U 55
Recommendation: Under

The overhaul at California is enormous. The Golden Bears have a new Head Coach in Justin Wilcox who is defensive minded which is the polar opposite of his predecessor Sonny Dykes. There is a new offensive system which is an up-tempo “spread” but very different from the “Bear Raid” employed here the past four seasons. Ex-Eastern Washington OC Beau Baldwin’s scheme is far more multiple and unlike the prior offense run here, it comes with a complex playbook. On the other side of the ball, Cal has scrapped the 4-3 in favor of defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter’s 3-4 alignment. The switch brings position changes, new assignments and the possibility that the talent on hand doesn’t completely fit the way it will down the road after a couple of more recruiting classes. While on paper 2017 does not look to be a great defensive season for California, it likely can’t be Read more

College Football Gambling: USC says it isn't looking past Western Michigan

08.29.2017     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After weathering the storm of a 1-3 SU/ATS start, USC finished last season with nine straight wins; seven of which covered the number. The Trojans won't start 1-3 this season with three of four at home including Week 1's opener vs. Western Michigan. Head coach Clay Helton though isn't taking any chances. Despite playing host to Stanford in Week 2 and then Texas in Week 3, Helton sounds as if he's hellbent on crushing everyone. The betting markets are on board with that concept: USC opened -23.5 over WMU and was bet up to -27.

Appearing on CBS Sports Radio last week, Helton noted that toward the end of last season, “everybody was talking about us at the end of the year, ‘Oh yeah, you’re probably one of the best four teams. Maybe you were a playoff team.’

“Well, the reality is we were a three-loss team, and that’s not going to get you into the playoffs,” Helton said. “What we learned as a team and as a football family is every dang game counts.”
