Chip Kelly's departure from Oregon, arrival in Philadelphia causes stir in betting markets

01.18.2013     07:00 AM     Printer Friendly
Can Chip Kelly have success in the NFL? Bettors seem to think so. Philadelphia's Super Bowl odds dropped from 30-1 to 22-1 at Las Vegas' Wynn sportsbook. As for Oregon, its BCS Championship odds fell from 5-1 to 8-1.

The NFL's Top 7 Pointspread Plays of the Year

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In my world, there’s nothing better than a ‘right side’ winner – no drama, no sweating; an easy ‘rocking chair’ cover.  Of course, cashing nothing but ‘right side’ winners is MUCH easier said than done.   In the real world, there are so many games that come down to a late, key play that determines the SU and/or ATS winner.

As the end of the NFL season approaches. I’ve gone back through my notes, looking at the some of the wackiest pointspread outcomes of the year – the really memorable ones. End of the year Top 10 lists are so passé, so I’ll call this my Top 7 Pointspread Plays of the Year.  Let’s start the countdown with No. 7

No. 7 – Week 11, Green Bay Packers late field goal
Green Bay was a three-point road favorite at slumping Detroit, but they trailed for most of the game, and were behind by six points at the 2-minute warning.  Lions’ bettors weren’t worried – a Green Bay touchdown, in theory, would only lead to a one-point, non-covering win.  Aaron Rodgers threw for that touchdown on the very first play Read more

NFL Handicapping: Robert Griffin III expected to start vs. Philadelphia

Washington -6.5 at Philadelphia O/U 45

Looks like Washington's Robert Griffin III will start Sunday's game at Philadelphia. Earlier this week, a handful of sportsbooks posted Washington -4/-4.5. Now that he's been upgraded to probable, the lines have jumped to -6/-6.5.

"I like what I see," coach Mike Shanahan said. "If there is no setback, he should be ready to go."

NFL Handicapping: Washington Redskins banged up along offensive line

Washington -4.5 at Philadelphia O/U 44.5

The Washington Redskins currently have two offensive line starters listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Philadelphia. Center Will Montgomery has a sprained MCL. Tyler Polumbus suffered a concussion in last week's game against Cleveland. And back-up Jordan Black, who filled in for Polumbus, was suspended for four games.

NFL Handicapping Trends: Philadelphia in letdown spot after snapping losing streak

Cincinnati -3.5 at Philadelphia O/U 45.5

Last week, the Philadelphia Eagles came away with a dramatic last second victory in Tampa Bay to snap an epic losing streak. With their new defensive line coach in tow they were solid all day in stopping the run, rushing the passer and stopping the Bucs from converting on third downs. Had they not gift wrapped seven points for the Bucs on off a muffed punt inside the 10-yard line perhaps the final touchdown drive would not have been necessary.

It will be interesting to see how they come back this week on the short rest. After celebrating like they had just won the Super Bowl the possibility of seeing an emotional letdown doesn’t seem too far off. Check out the results a week (or in Philly’s case four days) after snapping at least a five-game losing streak: Dating back to 2002, teams in that situation are 22-50-1 SU and 35-37-1 ATS (avg. line +5.2). We’ve already seen the Chiefs, Browns, Jaguars and Panthers all Read more

Parlay bettor crushed following Eagles' meaningless punt return touchdown

12.03.2012     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly
We don't know whether these "bad beat" stories are true or not, but if this one is indeed accurate, it has to rank up there with one of the year’s worst. So this dude supposedly hits the first seven games of his eight-teamer heading into Sunday night's Dallas-Philadelphia game. For starters, it is one of the kookiest parlays we’ve ever seen; littered with point buying and two random moneyline underdogs. Anyway, he had Dallas -9.5, and the Cowboys were up 38-27 and punting with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Of course with this being the NFL (and Week 13), the Eagles took the punt to the house – Dallas won 38-33. The bettor stood to win $18K.

Movie producer says NFL execs dug Silver Linings Playbook

11.30.2012     11:24 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

So not everyone associated with the NFL was offended by the movie Silver Linings Playbook and its sports betting sub-plot.

“The NFL is saying this movie is about gambling? They better see the movie,” Weinstein said in an interview with Reuters. “I showed the movie to Woody Johnson, who owns the New York Jets. He loved it. And I showed it to [Giants co-owner] Steve Tisch and he loved it. We showed it to the Philadelphia Eagles ownership and guys and they loved it. So this is ridiculous. I’m pretty sure [Cowboys owner] Jerry Jones saw it too and he liked it. So I don’t get this.”

Monday Night Football Betting Odds: 2-8 Carolina getting pounded by markets

11.26.2012     11:44 AM     Printer Friendly
Carolina -3 at Philadelphia O/U 42

Pick your coma-inducing poison. According to Bookmaker, 75% of bets have been placed on the Carolina Panthers for tonight's Monday Night Football game at Philadelphia. Carolina continues to receive support with most shops showing -3 with -120 or -125 juice. Heritage went to -3.5 even money. Interesting that on LVH's look-ahead lines for next week, Carolina is also a 3-point road favorite...at Kansas City.

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: Dissecting the NFL's bottom feeders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been watching the contenders from both conferences closely. This week, I turned my focus towards the bottom feeders; teams that some folks have been calling ‘dead’ in recent weeks.

With six games remaining on the slate for every NFL team, there’s still plenty of time to make money fading the teams that have quit on their coach and their season. And there’s most definitely an opportunity to make money with last place teams IF they play with passion and precision down the stretch.

Here’s my take on four teams that entered Sunday’s games in last place in their respective divisions.

Kansas City - We're 11 weeks into the season, and this sorry Chiefs offense hasn't improved one iota. There's talent to work with – Jamal Charles and Peyton Hillis make a decent 'thunder and lightning' duo running the football. Dwayne Bowe, Tony Moeaki, Dexter McCluster and Steve Breaston have all enjoyed past success as playmaking pass catchers, although Bowe got hurt early and wasn’t a factor here.

But the same two issues that have plagued KC all year haven't gone Read more

NFL Betting News and Notes Week 10

11.14.2012     12:12 PM     ICC     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The New England Patriots may need to be put on “automatic fade” watch laying double-digits at this point. They once again came up short as big chalk against Buffalo in a 37-31 win laying -13.5 points. That makes New England 0-3 ATS in that role this season including an outright loss to Arizona. The Patriots just aren’t playing anything close to the level of championship caliber defense right now to be trusted laying double-digits. The Pats run defense allowed over 100 yards to the Bills and the secondary was picked apart by Ryan Fitzpatrick who threw for 337 passing yards. Defensive stats like that won’t cash many tickets in that kind of price range.

The Philadelphia Eagles downward spiral continued on Sunday. They are a dead team walking right now. The body language is awful. Head coach Andy Reid is firmly on the hot seat. The offensive line can't protect anyone from teeing off on ailing quarterback Michael Vick. The run game has been non-existent. The defense has been a sieve in recent weeks giving up big plays against both the pass and the run. They’ve been guilty of taking numerous defensive holding, illegal contact and PI penalties Read more
