MLB Gambling Trends: The history of games totaled 6.5 or below

05.06.2013     08:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Lee) at San Francisco (Bumgarner) -140 O/U 6

These days it isn't out of the ordinary to see an MLB game with a total of 6.5. A total of 6 however is a bit more rare with only 77 such instances since the start of the 2011 season. We did some database queries and found a few interesting numbers. In games totals exactly 6.5, the UNDER cashed right at 55% (141-172 O/U). But in games lined exactly 6, a far different outcome with the OVER at 60% (41-27 O/U). Note that if we include totals of 5.5 the OVER isn't quite as strong at 45-23, 58% O/U. As for this year, totals 6.5 or less are 5-10 O/U. Totals of six, like we see in tonight's Philadelphia-San Francisco game are 0-2 O/U.

MLB Handicapping: Halladay looks to maintain good form vs. Cleveland

04.30.2013     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Halladay) -115 at Cleveland (McAllister) O/U 8

Roy Halladay's ERA has been on a steady decline after a rough start to the season. Over his last three outings Halladay has notched a 1.71 ERA and .118 BAA (.120 BABIP). The competition however wasn't very strong. Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Miami all currently rank as below average National League offenses whereas Atlanta and New York, two teams that hit Halladay hard, rank in the upper-half the NL in slugging and OPS. Cleveland ranks second in the American League in slugging (.438) and OPS (.764).

"I think the mental part kind of got blown a little out of proportion," Halladay said. "It's a way of looking at a game. It's not a mental thing. It's how you approach the game. I think coming out of spring training, having short outings, having some poor outings, Read more

MLB Betting News: Roy Halladay rediscovers sinker, success

04.24.2013     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Rodriguez) at Philadelphia (Halladay) -125 O/U 7

The reinvention of Roy Halladay is upon us! Halladay's back-to-back quality starts (15 IP, 7 hits, 3 ERs) could be contributed to a change in philosophy. Living (and dying) on the cutter over the last few seasons, Halladay has started to focus more on his sinker – he threw it 50 times last time out vs. St. Louis. Considering batters are hitting .438 vs. Halladay's cutter, this is without question a positive adjustment.

"He was constantly down and in on righties," Wigginton said. "Always a borderline ball-strike call."

"I saw a guy who didn't have his best stuff but competes his way into being very good," Matheny said. "The longer he went out there, he got better. He made a lot of mistakes. He worked deeper counts than I know he likes Read more

MLB Gambling Update: Halladay makes second start vs. New York Mets

04.08.2013     06:35 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

NY Mets (Harvey) at Philadelphia (Halladay) -115 O/U 7.5

Roy Halladay is back on the bump after giving up five earned runs in 3.1 innings in his season debut. A few scouts weighed in on the performance as well as whether or not Halladay can turn things around.

"Well, it's going to be a struggle. He's got to reinvent himself. And that's going to take a while. But I don't think he's done. I wouldn't go that far. Anyone who thinks this guy is a top-of-the-rotation guy now is not being realistic. And when I say top of the rotation, I mean a [No.] 1 or 2. He's not that. He's more like a [No.] 4 for me now. But that doesn't mean he's done.

Based on what I saw last night, that Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Halladay) at Atlanta (Maholm) -135 O/U 7
Recommendation: Atlanta

I’m determined to fade Roy Halladay tonight as he takes to the hill for the first time this season against the Atlanta Braves. Halladay has been one of the best pitchers in MLB for the better part of the last decade but he struggled in the second half of last season showing signs that maybe he is starting to move past the prime of his career. Halladay allowed 3+ runs in each of his last four starts in the 2012 season and things got even worse for Halladay this spring.

The Phillies ace endured a difficult March in which his fastball struggled to get into the high 80's. He suffered a stomach virus too which took away much of his strength. This of course is all coming off a season where Halladay posted his highest ERA (4.49) since 2001. I'm not sold on him coming out of the gate strong tonight against Atlanta who have hit him hard in recent starts. Halladay allowed 3, 4 and 8 runs in his three Read more

MLB Gambling: Betting markets tip hand on early season fade of Roy Halladay

04.03.2013     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
Philadelphia (Halladay) at Atlanta (Maholm) -135 O/U 7

Doesn't look like the betting markets are giving Philadelphia's Roy Halladay much respect to start the season. Pinnacle opened tonight's game against Atlanta as a pick 'em but virtually all of the money has come in on Paul Maholm and the Braves. Heading into the season, Halladay seems accepting of the fact that his is going to have to reinvent himself in order to succeed. Line history courtesy of Pinnacle.

"I'll have to do more," Halladay said. "I'm going to have to pitch that way. Add. Subtract. The older you get, unfortunately, you don't always have the ability to go harder, harder, harder. That's something you have to adjust to. Change your spots, change your location. I feel comfortable I can pitch in that area."

Philadelphia (Hamels) at Atlanta (Maholm) -115 O/U 7
Recommendation: Atlanta

Not many situational spots in MLB but I'm willing to support the Atlanta Braves and they try to avoid being swept at home against Philadelphia. Not a lot to complain about with Cole Hamels. He's been consistent throughout the year but may not be as sharp as usual after skipping his last start due to some sort of stomach flu. He's also not a huge R/L split guy and the Braves will be seeing him for a fourth time. For the Braves, Paul Maholm has been very Hamels-esque with a 1.65 ERA over his last 11 starts. Maholm does have a strong R/L split (.285/.220) for his career and that sets up well against the Phillies who are hitting .264/.724 vs. righties but only .237/.691 vs. southpaws. Spot and price are right to support the short home favorite.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Kendrick) at Miami (Johnson) -140 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Miami

Two of the most disappointing teams in all of baseball will continue their series tonight as the Phillies play the Marlins in Miami tonight. The Phillies will send part-time starter Kyle Kendrick to the hill. There’s a major reason why Kendrick is still a bobbling starter and that’s simply because he’s not very good. The Phillies are 4-11 when Kendrick gets the call in 2012, while he totes a 4.86 ERA. There’s nothing fluky about his troubling ERA, and you could even argue it should be worse with just a 68-38 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 96.1 innings of work. Making matters worse is the right-hander just isn’t getting the groundballs he’s featured at times over the course of his career. Meanwhile, the Marlins will have ace Josh Johnson toeing the rubber. The big right-hander has fought to find his vintage form all season long after a shoulder injury in 2011. Of late, Read more

MLB Betting News: Philadelphia's Halladay slated for Tuesday return

07.16.2012     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Philadelphia Phillies, who trail the first place Washington Nationals by 14 games in the National League East, will send Roy Halladay to the hill tomorrow in Los Angeles. According to pitching coach Rich Dubee said Halladay will be on some sort of pitch count.

“All right, fine,” is how Dubee described that outing. “There is rustiness and inconsistency there, but arm wise and working wise, he’s feeling a lot better than he has in a long time.”

Atlanta (Jurrjens) at Philadelphia (Worley) -125 O/U 9
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Atlanta’s a confident team right now having won three straight and four of five with all four wins being by three or more runs. The offense has scored 29 runs in their last five games and the starting staff has rattled off four straight quality wins. The surge has seen them now get to within 0.5 game of the lead in the NL Wild Card race. Conversely, Philadelphia is an absolute mess after 86 games at 37-49, 14 games behind division leading Washington. Local media, the fan base and the team are all extremely frustrated and the Phils are an inch away from being a trade deadline seller. All that being said, Philadelphia looks to be in a good spot today against the Braves and RH starter Jair Jurrjens. While Jurrjens numbers in his three starts since coming off the DL look real good (2-0 / 1.20 WHIP / 1.47 ERA), there are numbers inside the overall façade that have us looking to fade him Read more
