NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings

Pittsburgh -225 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh Team Total Over

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been one of the top scoring teams in the NHL for years and they are right near the top again this season 5th in the league averaging 3.3 goals per game. The Penguins got even more dynamic and explosive offensively at this year’s trade deadline when they acquired veteran center Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators. After a slow start with the Penguins, he’s collected points in six straight games. Pittsburgh has three lines and nine forwards that form one of the deepest forward groups in the league and it has been on full display in recent weeks with the Penguins scoring 3+ goals in eight of their last 10 games and four or more on five occasions during that span. Pittsburgh should be able to light the lamp against a weak Detroit Red Wings squad that has been porous defensively and gotten unreliable goaltending on a nightly basis. Detroit will be playing the second night of back-to-back games here as well and that should make for a bit of a fatigued blue line for this game which is often when mistakes happen and Read more

New Jersey at Pittsburgh -205 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Over

The Pittsburgh Penguins are red hot having won six of their last seven games overall and 12 straight at home and their potent offensive ability is a big reason why. Pittsburgh has tallied a whopping 42 goals in their last nine games combined averaging well over four goals per game during this stretch. The Pens already had a bunch of goal scoring options in Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel and Carl Hagelin just to name a few on this loaded squad but they added to it prior to Monday’s trade deadline acquiring center Derick Brassard in a deal with the Ottawa Senators. Brassard brings his 18 goals and 38 points in over 50 games this season to bolster this already lethal Pittsburgh squad even more. The Penguins will face New Jersey’s backup goalie Keith Kinkaid tonight who has been thrust into regular duty with the injury absence of Cory Schneider. Kinkaid has very porous numbers in his career against Pittsburgh entering tonight with a 3.69 GAA and .891 save percentage in 4 games played against the Penguins. Pittsburgh should have the potential to get to their Read more

NY Rangers at Pittsburgh -160 O/U 6
Recommendation: Over

The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins are both playing good hockey right now and an offensive surge on both sides is the main reason for it. The Rangers have scored 3+ goals in 8 of their last 10 games. Pittsburgh during their current four- game win streak have potted 19 goals during that span. The series history between these two teams points to one high scoring game after another. The Over is 6-1-1 in the last 8 head-to-head meetings overall between the Rangers and Penguins including 5-0-1 to the Over in the last six games between the clubs here in Pittsburgh. Henrik Lundqvist gave up five goals to Pittsburgh when he faced them earlier this season in a game that flew Over the total ending up 5-4 in favor of the Penguins. Pittsburgh has been forced to start their backup goalie Tristan Jarry each night out and he has been strong so far in relief of injured #1 netminder Matt Murray but he was also the benefactor of facing the offensively challenged Buffalo Sabres in each of his last two starts and they are one of the worst offensive teams in the NHL. This will be a Read more

Washington -130 at Pittsburgh O/U 5.5
Recommendaton: Washington

Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals goes tonight as the Washington Capitals look to even the series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Game 3 was one of the most dramatic games of this postseason with the Capitals winning 3-2 in overtime. An early hit on Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby delivered by defenseman Matt Niskanen proved to be large for both clubs. Niskanen was given a 5-minute major for and a game misconduct for his high cross-check hit. Crosby then left the contest for concussion protocol which he eventually failed and is now ruled out for this contest. "Sid the Kid" has had concussion issues in the past and losing their top scorer, along with another key forward in Conor Sheary who is out with a head injury suffered when colliding with teammate Patric Hornqvist midway through Game 3, should provide a huge boost to Washington. The Caps also will have Niskanen back as he wasn't suspended by the league. Great opportunity for the road side to even the series before returning home. Lay the moderate chalk with Washington.

Pittsburgh -135 at Winnipeg O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

The Winnipeg Jets host the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins tonight in a battle of two superstar scorers; veteran captain Sidney Crosby and Jets rookie phenom Patrick Laine. The 18-year old Swede leads all first-year skaters and is second overall in the league in goals with 32. Two-time MVP Crosby leads the NHL with 34 goals and is third overall in points with 69. The Penguins are in a very tight Metropolitan Division race, currently tied with Columbus for second place with 88 points and two points ahead of the New York Rangers. Pittsburgh knows it has no room for error as it embarks on a tough five-game road trip. With 18 games remaining, even a short losing streak could send the Pens down to the Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference and possibly out of their division quadrant for the first two rounds of the playoffs. Pittsburgh has earned a point in seven of their last 10 games but has struggled on the road as of late, dropping four of their last five games away from the PPG Paints Center. Winnipeg has lost eight of its last 13 contests overall and hasn't been able Read more

Pittsburgh at Chicago -135 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Chicago

Two of the NHL's best teams hook-up at the "Madhouse on Madison" tonight as the Chicago Blackhawks host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Chicago has been one of the hottest teams in the league right now, winning nine of its last 10 and quickly catching up to rival Minnesota within the Central Division standings. The Blackhawks have scored three or more goals in 11 of their last 14 games overall, with 30+ shots on goal in eight of their last nine. The superstar duo of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews has been electric over the last 10 games, scoring a combined 16 goals and 18 assists with each skater recording a hat trick in back-to-back contests. Linemates Richard Panik and Nick Schmaltz have also scored eight goals and 13 assists combined in their last 10 contests. For Pittsburgh, it will be playing on the back end of a two-night swing after blowing a two-goal lead and losing 3-2 to Dallas. The Pens are 4-6 in the second leg of back-to-back games this season, and despite earning points in seven of their last nine road games heading into Tuesday night's action, Pittsburgh has been dealing Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Blues at Pittsburgh Penguins

St. Louis at Pittsburgh -215 O/U 6
Recommendation: Over

‎One of the best clubs in the NHL looks to keep its winning ways going tonight as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the St. Louis Blues. The defending Stanley Cup champs are on a four-game winning streak that included an astronomical 24 goals. Pittsburgh leads the league with 3.67 goals per game and have fired off 30 or more shots in nine of its last 11 contests. Forwards Conor Sheary and Evgeni Malkin have been on fire over their last 10 games with a combined 16 goals and 11 assists. Sidney Crosby had three goals and 10 assists within that same span.

St. Louis has been struggling of late, dropping five of its last seven contests; 28 goals allowed in those five losses. Starting goaltender Jake Allen has given up 14 goals in his last four appearances and has been pulled in four of his last six starts. Head coach Ken Hitchcock was forced to start Carter Hutton in net for three games and GM (and former Hall-of-Fame goalie) Martin Brodeur went so far as to call up Pheonix Copley from AHL to make his first career start in Saturday's 5-3 loss at Winnipeg. The 25-year old Alaska native will Read more

Washington at St. Louis +110 O/U 5
Recommendation: St. Louis

I like to bet against a team that just saw an extended winning streak come to an end and that is what I’m doing here with the Capitals as they saw their nine-game win streak end in a wild, back and forth, high scoring loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night. It’s hard for teams to avoid an emotional and mental letdown in their following game. A perfect example is Columbus who lost 5-4 to the Rangers after their massive 16-game winning streak was snapped. St. Louis is coming off a 6-4 home loss to Ottawa on Tuesday night but that was a tough spot for the Blues as they were playing their fourth game in sixth nights; all of them with travel between games. St. Louis has had issues with their goaltending of late with Jake Allen struggling and Carter Hutton hammered for five goals in that loss to the Senators. I’d expect the Blues to give Allen another chance tonight and I think he will be very motivated to deliver a strong performance. Allen notched a shutout against Washington in his lone previous appearance against the Capitals. Look for St. Louis to play with much Read more
