Eastern Conference Playoff Betting Preview

#1 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #8 New York Islanders
Series Price: Pittsburgh -380/New York +320

The Pittsburgh Penguins enter the playoffs absolutely spoiled rotten with talent and top tier players. Pittsburgh already had Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, and Pascal Dupuis but that wasn’t good enough for GM Ray Shero who envisions this season as Stanley Cup or bust. Shero pulled off two blockbuster trades before the deadline acquiring Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames and Brenden Morrow from the Dallas Stars who both add scoring, grit and leadership to an already stacked squad. Pittsburgh’s defense started the season struggling to keep pucks out of their net but they’ve tightened up their defensive zone play down the stretch and have a good collection of veteran and quality defenseman like Kris Letang, Paul Martin, Douglas Murray and Brooks Orpik. They are hoping to have captain Sidney Crosby back in time for the start of this series. He suffered a broken jaw on March 30th and has been practicing since late last week but has not yet been medically cleared Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Pick: Dallas Stars at Chicago Blackhawks

Dallas +165 at Chicago O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Dallas

The Chicago Blackhawks are certainly free to coast their way through the rest of the regular season. They have the Western Conference wrapped up and are four points ahead of the injury riddled Pittsburgh Penguins with one game in hand for the top seed of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After a couple of terrific and satisfying wins against Detroit and St. Louis over the weekend, this has the makings of a major flat spot for the Blackhawks. They will be up against a Dallas Stars squad that is in all-out, desperation mode as they sit just two points back of the Detroit Red Wings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Dallas has won five straight games to get back into the playoff picture and they’ve been beating some of the West’s best teams including Anaheim, San Jose twice and the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. The Stars have outscored their last five opponents by a combined tally of 20-9 and a win here would put them ahead of Detroit in the standings. Dallas has lost both regular season meetings against Chicago but the situation is right Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Buffalo Sabres at Pittsburgh Penguins

Buffalo at Pittsburgh -240 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Pittsburgh has won an incredible 15 straight games and they are doing it on the defensive end.  A team that has always had the offensive firepower to dominate the opposition, the Penguins are finding ways to win defensively as well.  They have recorded three straight shutouts and have gone Under the total nine of their last ten games.  Despite their ability to plug anyone into the lineup and get the same results, the recent injury to Sidney Crosby (broken jaw and out indefinitely) could prove costly.  The trades for Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow up front last week will undoubtedly help offensively and defensively (both are solid two-way players), but I don't expect much chemistry between them and their new teammates right off the bat.  Buffalo comes into Pittsburgh losing its last four games and with a big "for sale" sign on their roster.  I'd be surprised if the Sabres didn't move more players before the 3pm EST Wednesday trade deadline.  That being said, this is still a team with a ton of pride and a lot to play for.  I generally like to Read more

Sportsmemo Handicappers react to Pittsburgh's trade for Jarome Iginla

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sportsmemo Handicappers Ian Cameron and Sammy P weigh in Pittsburgh acquiring Calgary's Jarome Iginla.

Ian Cameron’s take…

This COULD be the trade that puts Pittsburgh over the top. Hard not to think of them as the team to beat for the Stanley Cup after landing Iginla. It was hilarious watching all the TSN Hockey Insiders last night go on and on about Iginla going to Boston only for Calgary GM Jay Feaster to pull the rug out from under everyone and ship him off to Pittsburgh.

Calgary got a couple blue chip prospects and Pittsburgh's 1st round pick in 2013 but this move proves it's Cup or bust for the Penguins. Dan Bylsma has some tough choices to make in regards to where they put Iginla. You would assume he'd go on their top line but Sidney Crosby, Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz have developed great chemistry and have been dominant. Bylsma may not wish to upset the apple cart there so Iginla may actually be slotted on their second line with Brenden Morrow (and eventually Evgeni Malkin when he comes back from injury) but then where do you put James Neal who is your third right winger after Dupuis and Iginla? First total we have seen this playoff season lined at 6. If any two teams are deserving of this honor it is the Flyers and Penguins. Neither team lets their foot off the gas when they play each other as evidenced by the chart below.  Important to note that in each previous meeting at least one team scored a power play goal with some games seeing as many as two or three.  If the referees are going remain whistle happy I see no reason why this series won’t produce more high scoring affairs.

#1 New York Rangers vs. #8 Ottawa Senators
Season Series: Senators won 3-1 (Senators 4-1, Senators 3-0, Rangers 3-2, Senators 5-4 (SO))
Series Price at Pinnacle: NY Rangers -216/Ottawa +193

What to expect: The New York Rangers have been playing playoff hockey since Day 1 of the NHL season. They are the best shot blocking team in the NHL, they have an elite goaltender in Lundqvist that can steal a game if needed, they play suffocating defense, and they typically receive contributions from all four forward lines. I am not however quick to dismiss what head coach Paul MacLean has done with the Ottawa Senators this season. The complete 180 this team has done is remarkable and they have been a consistent team throughout the much of the season. With Spezza, Alfredsson, and Michalek up front, the Senators are a very dangerous team and tough draw for the Rangers as seen in some of their recent meetings. The key in this series (like most) is goaltending and it is hard to go against King Henrik. In the end, New York has the overall depth and defensive style to grind down Ottawa and win a seven game series. New York takes this series in 6 games, but like Read more

NHL Eastern Conference Mid-Season Betting Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL season nears the halfway mark so it’s time to sit down and take a look at where teams are at currently and what can we expect going forward.  There are a few surprises in the Eastern Conference so far.  We knew the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins would be playing good hockey and competing at a high level, but I don’t think too many people expected the Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, or the New York Rangers to be this solid in the early going.  I liked both the Rangers and Panthers heading into the season so their success doesn’t come as a huge shock. The Flyers though have exceeded expectations. I didn’t think we'd see their young guys grow so fast and make such an immediate impact. I figured it would take them at least a year to adapt after the major overhaul to their team this past offseason.

The major disappointment thus far has to be the Buffalo Sabres.  Despite the a handful of key injuries the first half of the season, they still should be doing more with the talent they have healthy and Ryan Miller in net. Tampa Bay has been a disappointment as well.  They haven’t strung Read more

NHL Playoff Betting Preview: Washington vs. Tampa Bay

Eastern Conference Semifinals
No. 1 Washington vs. No. 5 Tampa Bay

This series is going to be a battle, plain and simple.  I expect to see plenty of one goal and overtime games between these two clubs.  During the first round of the playoffs against the Penguins, Tampa Bay employed its 1-3-1 “trap” system throughout the neutral zone which is designed to clog the middle and slow down the opposition.  This provides for less puck possession and more battle type hockey where each team is fighting for loose pucks. Washington is accustomed to this style after playing a more defensive oriented style this year.

The bottom line is this series is going to come down to special teams.  Tampa Bay got by Pittsburgh in seven games by going 8-for-27 on the power play and killing off 34-of-35 penalties.  That type of production will surely be enough to get by Washington, but unfortunately the Capitals were also very stingy on their PK against New York killing off Read more
