NHL Handicapper Free Play: Vancouver Canucks at Pittsburgh Penguins

Vancouver +125 at Pittsburgh O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Vancouver

The Vancouver Canucks have been on my NHL card multiple times this season including in their most recent game when I cashed a 20* in their 4-3 road win against Washington. The Canucks are surging and playing with tons of confidence under new head coach Willie Desjardins who has loosened the reins on this team and allowed them to get back to playing a more speed driven attack. Vancouver has also been road warriors notching a truly impressive 10-4 record. They will be catching the Pittsburgh Penguins at perhaps their most vulnerable time. The Penguins are dealing with a rash of key injuries as defenseman Kris Letang has been placed on the IR with a groin injury, forward Chris Kunitz is out with a fractured foot and defenseman Robert Bortuzzo will be serving the first game of his two-game suspension. Those recent absences don’t even include Beau Bennett and Pascal Dupuis; two very good offensive weapons for the Penguins who remain out due to injury. That puts more pressure on the shoulders of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to keep the offense humming despite the losses of some key Read more

NY Rangers at Pittsburgh -165 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Game 7 tonight in the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins should be a dogfight.  The Rangers have battled back and won the last two games after falling behind 3-1 in the series.  Momentum seems to be on the Rangers side as they head into Pittsburgh as +140 underdogs.  Game 7's have been particularly kind to the New York Rangers as they have won their last four series deciders with the O/U going 0-3-1 as well.  This is however one of the toughest Game 7 scenarios they’ve faced in recent memory. The Penguins have been in this situation before and have the experience to get back on their horse and put together an elite effort tonight.  Pittsburgh hasn't played many Game 7's in recent years, but their three most recent has seen them go 2-1 with both wins going under the total. This has been a tale of two series as the NY Rangers really turned things around and rallied behind Martin St. Louis for Game 5 and Game 6 right after his mother had passed away. Overall I am expecting a very low scoring game. We will see very Read more

Pittsburgh +100 at Boston O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh faces a near impossible hole trailing Boston 3-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals. However, I’m willing to make a smaller wager and recommendation on the Penguins tonight if for no other reason than pride. The Penguins have a roster filled with intense competitors including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow and I highly doubt any of them want their amazing season to end in a sweep considering the Penguins were the best team in the Eastern Conference throughout the regular season. There is no doubt it was a crushing, gut-wrenching double overtime loss for Pittsburgh in Game 3. The Penguins outshot the Bruins 54-40 but couldn’t find a way to put enough pucks behind Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask who was phenomenal in the win. Pittsburgh could be completely demoralized but I think there is enough veteran players and leadership to keep them in a positive frame of mind for Game 4.

Pittsburgh’s power play simply MUST get going after being held scoreless in the first three games. The reason Pittsburgh might finally break out of their Read more

Eastern Conference Playoff Betting Preview

#1 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #8 New York Islanders
Series Price: Pittsburgh -380/New York +320

The Pittsburgh Penguins enter the playoffs absolutely spoiled rotten with talent and top tier players. Pittsburgh already had Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, and Pascal Dupuis but that wasn’t good enough for GM Ray Shero who envisions this season as Stanley Cup or bust. Shero pulled off two blockbuster trades before the deadline acquiring Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames and Brenden Morrow from the Dallas Stars who both add scoring, grit and leadership to an already stacked squad. Pittsburgh’s defense started the season struggling to keep pucks out of their net but they’ve tightened up their defensive zone play down the stretch and have a good collection of veteran and quality defenseman like Kris Letang, Paul Martin, Douglas Murray and Brooks Orpik. They are hoping to have captain Sidney Crosby back in time for the start of this series. He suffered a broken jaw on March 30th and has been practicing since late last week but has not yet been medically cleared Read more

Dallas +165 at Chicago O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Dallas

The Chicago Blackhawks are certainly free to coast their way through the rest of the regular season. They have the Western Conference wrapped up and are four points ahead of the injury riddled Pittsburgh Penguins with one game in hand for the top seed of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After a couple of terrific and satisfying wins against Detroit and St. Louis over the weekend, this has the makings of a major flat spot for the Blackhawks. They will be up against a Dallas Stars squad that is in all-out, desperation mode as they sit just two points back of the Detroit Red Wings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Dallas has won five straight games to get back into the playoff picture and they’ve been beating some of the West’s best teams including Anaheim, San Jose twice and the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. The Stars have outscored their last five opponents by a combined tally of 20-9 and a win here would put them ahead of Detroit in the standings. Dallas has lost both regular season meetings against Chicago but the situation is right Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Buffalo Sabres at Pittsburgh Penguins

Buffalo at Pittsburgh -240 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Pittsburgh has won an incredible 15 straight games and they are doing it on the defensive end.  A team that has always had the offensive firepower to dominate the opposition, the Penguins are finding ways to win defensively as well.  They have recorded three straight shutouts and have gone Under the total nine of their last ten games.  Despite their ability to plug anyone into the lineup and get the same results, the recent injury to Sidney Crosby (broken jaw and out indefinitely) could prove costly.  The trades for Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow up front last week will undoubtedly help offensively and defensively (both are solid two-way players), but I don't expect much chemistry between them and their new teammates right off the bat.  Buffalo comes into Pittsburgh losing its last four games and with a big "for sale" sign on their roster.  I'd be surprised if the Sabres didn't move more players before the 3pm EST Wednesday trade deadline.  That being said, this is still a team with a ton of pride and a lot to play for.  I generally like to Read more

Sportsmemo Handicappers react to Pittsburgh's trade for Jarome Iginla

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sportsmemo Handicappers Ian Cameron and Sammy P weigh in Pittsburgh acquiring Calgary's Jarome Iginla.

Ian Cameron’s take…

This COULD be the trade that puts Pittsburgh over the top. Hard not to think of them as the team to beat for the Stanley Cup after landing Iginla. It was hilarious watching all the TSN Hockey Insiders last night go on and on about Iginla going to Boston only for Calgary GM Jay Feaster to pull the rug out from under everyone and ship him off to Pittsburgh.

Calgary got a couple blue chip prospects and Pittsburgh's 1st round pick in 2013 but this move proves it's Cup or bust for the Penguins. Dan Bylsma has some tough choices to make in regards to where they put Iginla. You would assume he'd go on their top line but Sidney Crosby, Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz have developed great chemistry and have been dominant. Bylsma may not wish to upset the apple cart there so Iginla may actually be slotted on their second line with Brenden Morrow (and eventually Evgeni Malkin when he comes back from injury) but then where do you put James Neal who is your third right winger after Dupuis and Iginla?
