NBA Betting News: Portland Trail Blazers look to be packing it in

Excellent article on the current state of the Portland Trail Blazers courtesy of blazersegde.com. It looks like they've all but waved the white flag with six straight losses by margins of 18, 10, 27, 10, 18, and 20. And the remaining schedule won't be easy: vs. Houston, vs. Dallas, vs. LA Lakers, vs. Oklahoma City, at Denver, at LA Clippers, vs. Golden State.

NBA Handicapping: Portland goes young with Aldridge and Batum out

Memphis -5.5 at Portland O/U 189.5

Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle) and Nicolas Batum (arm) will miss tonight's game against Memphis. As a result, the team will start three rookies. In the last three games without Aldridge, the Trail Blazers allowed 112, 124 and 105 points. Two of those contests came against Utah and the Jazz frontcourt had a field day. Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson, and Derrick Favors combined to shoot 52-of-82, 63% from the floor with 118 points. Memphis opened -4 and was bet up to -5.5.

“It’s a good opportunity for Meyers and Victor and Will (Barton) to get some minutes on the court,” Stotts said, before noting the team’s goals remain the same. “But we’re going to try to win games. Guys out there are going to play to win. That part hasn’t changed.”

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers

Denver -2.5 at Portland O/U 209.5
Recommendation: Denver

Portland won its last game 92-86 at home over the Boston Celtics; a solid win over a playoff team. But a closer look reveals that the Celtics were playing their fourth road game in five nights and were obviously running on fumes. Prior to that the Trail Blazers had lost seven games in a row including loses to bottom feeder teams like Orlando and Phoenix.

Denver on the other hand is firing on all cylinders. In their last game they shellacked the Los Angeles Lakers 119-108, outscoring them in fast break points 33-3. In the month of February the Nuggets are now 8-4 straight up while Portland is a woeful 3-8.

Yes, Denver has a poor record at the Rose Garden having lost six straight, and thus we believe that the early move in the line is based on this past history and not the current form of these ball clubs. Denver opened a -3.5 favorite and is now -2.5. Small forward Danilo Gallinari has a thigh bruise Read more

NBA Gambling: Kobe says Lakers will make playoffs, odds say different

Portland at LA Lakers -9 O/U 202.5

Despite being three games below .500, Kobe Bryant seems to feel the Lakers are a lock to make the postseason. They are currently 3.5 games behind Houston for the eighth spot in the Western Conference. According to John Hollinger's numbers, the Lakers have a 32.7% chance of reaching the postseason. One sportsbook had the Lakers -150 to miss the playoffs.

"It's not a question of if we make the playoffs. We will," Bryant told Sports Illustrated. "And when we get there, I have no fear of anyone — Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Denver … whoever. I have zero nervousness about that."

NBA Gambling News: Portland Trail Blazers continue to slide

02.21.2013     02:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Portland Trail Blazers just worked themselves out of the Western Conference playoff hunt after losing six straight (0-6 ATS). When asked about their struggles, a few players pulled out the lack of trust card. Now if by lack of trust they mean their defense has been horrible (108.7 ppg allowed last six games) then yes, trust has been a major issue. Portland travels to LA to take on the Lakers tomorrow night.

"We're not trusting each other," Wesley Matthews surmised.

"I feel like lately we haven't been trusting each other," Aldridge concluded, "or overly helping each other on defense."

"Our transition defense has gotten a little worse. That was one of the Achilles' heels early in the season," coach Terry Stotts said after Wednesday's practice. "Our pick-and-roll defense has been inconsistent. We have good stretches, but it's not as consistent as we need it to be."

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota hopes to avoid another slow start vs. San Antonio

San Antonio -4.5 at Minnesota O/U 198.5

Minnesota's Rick Adelman called out his team for their poor start against Portland on Monday. The Trail Blazers jumped out to a 25-18 lead after the first quarter and held a 49-38 advantage at half. The Timberwolves fought back and hung 40 in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough as Portland came out on top 100-98. Minnesota has lost 12 of 14 (3-10-1 ATS) heading into tonight’s ESPN matchup against San Antonio.

"If we are just going through the motions, which it seemed like we were doing, it's just not going to happen," Adelman said. "We have to look at the personnel and look at why aren't we doing it."

"We are not good enough right now to come out and think we can just ease into a game," Adelman said. "I hope it's a lesson learned. We have to Read more

NBA Handicapping: Houston Rockets rip off three straight wins and pointspread covers

Hey Los Angeles Lakers…hey Portland Trailblazers…hey Dallas Mavericks…the Houston Rockets aren’t interested in taking a powder the rest of the NBA season and handing away their playoff spot to any of you guys!

In fact, the way the Rockets played tonight, the teams above them in the Western Conference playoff race will need to start looking in the rearview mirror. Particularly the team they beat, current #7 seed…the Utah Jazz.

Houston 125, Utah 80

2-Point Percentage: Houston 56%, Utah 43%

3-Point Shooting: Houston 16/34, Utah 5/18

Free Throws: Houston 15/18, Utah 11/19

Rebounds: Houston 44, Utah 39

Turnovers: Houston 5, Utah 15

HELLO! We documented Houston’s recent struggles during a brutal fatigue stretch that saw them play four games in five days…TWICE…over a two-week period. Looks like they have their legs Read more

NBA Handicapping: Golden State looks for better post defense vs. Portland

01.11.2013     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland at Golden State -7.5 O/U 206.5

Some good in-depth stats to consider for tonight's Golden State-Portland matchup. Over their last two games, the Warriors were carved up in the paint by both the Clippers and Grizzlies to the tune of 56 and 60 points, respectively. Portland ranks 28th in the league in points in the paint at 35.9.

Golden State is 5-10 when yielding at least 41 points in the paint and 17-2 when allowing 40 or fewer.

"That's the strength of their team, is grinding in the paint and offensive rebounding," said David Lee, who has double-doubles in 11 of his last 14 games against Portland, including each of the last three. "It's disappointing, because that's been one of our strengths throughout the season, and we've just got to come back and do a better job of it next game."

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Portland Trail Blazers at Charlotte Bobcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland at Charlotte -1 O/U 192
Recommendation: Charlotte

Charlotte was the worst team in NBA history last year. But a new coach, a rebuilt roster and a handful of early season wins has this team feeling fairly confident these days. The betting markets remember what happened under Paul Silas and his son in 2011-12. The current Bobcats roster has very little connection with that squad, a pointspread bargain in early season play. They’ve already matched last seasons’ win total, and have a winning SU record at home so far.

Kemba Walker is developing into a fine young point guard, reminiscent of his national championship season at UConn, making great decisions with the basketball particularly during crunch time of the fourth quarter. He's a winner, plain and simple. Head coach Mike Dunlap: ''He's setting the culture for us. There's a lot on his plate, but he can handle it." Ramon Sessions and Ben Gordon have provided instant offense on the wing. Rookies Michael Read more
