College Football Gambling: Missouri fires defensive coordinator

09.12.2017     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another situation where when things go south, shore it up by canning a coordinator. After last week's 31-13 home loss to South Carolina, Missouri parted ways with defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross. Ironically, it was one of the Tigers' betting showings defensively as it held the Gamecocks to a respectable 359 total yards (5.28 ypp). Head coach Dave Odom claimed the decision to fire Cross was based solely on "philosophical differences." We'll take a guess at what those difference were: Cross pleads with OC to slow down the pace and give his defense a fighting chance. Odom says, quit bitching and deal with it. Saturday's total vs. Purdue was peppered up from 71 to 78.5. Mizzou is currently -7.5 home chalk.

“I don’t know if you ever can say it’s the right time or the wrong time,” Odom said. “I know that the staff we have in place, I’m confident that we can go do what we need to do in order to give ourselves the chance to be successful.”

College Football Betting Preview: Penn State Nittany Lions at Purdue Boilermakers

Penn State at Purdue
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Penn State -13.5 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Penn State -12.5 O/U 56.5
Recommendation: Purdue

Since getting blown out against Maryland 50-7, Purdue has rallied back with three straight solid performances. The Boilermakers managed to fire back with a win over Illinois, hung 500 yards on Iowa, and battled toe-to-toe with Nebraska for three quarters before eventually wearing down. All three performances weren't without plenty of hiccups, particularly Purdue's inability to run the football against the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers (71 yards combined), but the attitude remains positive with this club following the departure of head coach Darrell Hazell.

And they certainly catch Penn State at a good time following its big win over Ohio State. You give the Nittany Lions credit for the victory but they were still outgained by 137 yards. Overall, the Nittany Lions' body of work isn't all that impressive. They were totally outclassed by Michigan and barely slipped past Minnesota 29-26 despite statistically dominating the game. And in the in over Read more

College Football Handicapping: Purdue desperate for offensive help

08.08.2016     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's generally not a good sign when a coach is in an improved-or-get-fired year and decides to go with a new offensive coordinator who wants to "simplify things." That's the case with Purdue who canned OC John Shoop this past offseason. The Boilermakers improved from a yards per game perspective each of Shoops' three seasons but still ranked as one of the weakest offenses in the Big Ten. Purdue decided to promote tight ends coach Terry Malone to replace Shoop. Because of injuries and ineffectiveness, the Boilermakers have been forced to play multiple quarterbacks each of head coach Darrell Hazell's first three seasons. It's resulted in a 6-30 record and only two Big Ten wins. In five seasons as a head coach (Kent State and Purdue), Hazell's offenses have never ranked higher than 74th nationally in total offense (104th average).

"At the end of the day, simple is best," said Hazell, now 6-30 in three seasons at Purdue. "Coach Malone has done an excellent job with these

College Basketball Gambling: Opponents not digging Maryland's balls

02.12.2016     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More rumblings about opposing teams not liking the Under Armour balls Maryland plays with at home. Iowa complained about it following its 74-68 loss two weeks ago. In that game, the Hawkeyes shot 5-of-24 from three. Purdue practiced all week with them but ended up hitting only 3-of-25 from deep in a 72-61 loss. Saturday's opponent, Wisconsin, isn't a big fan either and vividly remembers last year's 38% FG, 53-point stinker in College Park. Now it's not as if Maryland doesn't have other factors in its favor like a strong home court and an above average defense. However, if you spend 95% of your time with a leather ball and then switch over to a different material, it do doubt feels weird and can easily throw off your shot. But while it probably is somewhat of an advantage for the Terps, who are undefeated at home, it hasn't resulted in any Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Purdue not pleased with offensive efficiency

01.07.2016     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Purdue may have arguably the best defense in the country but head coach Matt Painter ain't happy. Last week, the Boilermakers ran out to a 37-20 halftime lead against Iowa but proceeded to allowed 50 in the second half. It resulted in a 70-63 home loss. Painter said that it wasn't so much poor defense as it was poor offense that played a role in the meltdown. Purdue plays host to Michigan tonight.

"Our offense has been poor,"  Painter said. "We haven't taken care of the basketball and our shot selection hasn’t been great. Any time you're in transition more and you can’t set your defense, you're not going to be be as efficient."

"We had guys that didn’t play with poise; didn’t show their experience," Painter said. "Nothing that happened in the second half didn’t happen in the first half.  When there's something that needs to be adjusted, you make that adjustment at halftime. When you've held somebody to 20 points and
