Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: A look back at NFL Week 5 action

10.08.2012     07:49 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A full quarter of the NFL teams entered Week 5 at .500 and two more reached the .500 mark after notching victories on Sunday. I focused on five of those teams closely during this week’s NFL mayhem. Here are my notes from their respective performances.

Buffalo Bills - How bad is this defense? Well, they set an NFL record for futility – no team in league history had ever allowed 300 rushing yards and 300 passing yards in the same game. And that came just one week after they allowed 45 second half points on seven consecutive scoring drives against New England, making the Bills the first team since 1950 to allow 550+ yards in back-to-back weeks. Now that’s a struggling stop unit!

This pass D has awful fundamentals, giving up yardage in chunks. Every decent QB should have a field day throwing downfield -- there's no pass rush, and these cornerbacks are not shutdown guys. And there’s no question that this defense lacked effort throughout the second half here – they flat out quit.

We got the ‘bad’ Ryan Fitzpatrick today. Fitz continues to struggle with his deep throws, missing Stevie Johnson for a sure Read more

Saturday MLS Free Betting Pick: Kansas City at New York

Kansas City at New York
Recommendation: Over 2.5 (+101)

I think the Red Bull offense is finally starting to click after a slow start to the season. They have scored seven goals in their last two games and Thierry Henry is finally starting to find his form with three goals and two assists in his last two games. Kansas City comes into this game with the MLS’s worst defense (2.40 GAA) and has already allowed four of five opponents to score 2+ goal. Despite Kansas City’s defensive struggles, the offense has been strong and is currently tied for the league lead with a 2.00 GPG. In last year’s meeting, Kansas City really took it to the Red Bulls with a 26-10 shot advantage. This season with Kansas City’s upgraded offense I believe they can punch in a goal or two. The Red Bulls have looked dominant their last two games (4-0 and 3-0 wins) and against a team like Kansas City, who has had a lot of issues on defense, there should be plenty of opportunities for more success.

MLS Free Betting Recommendation: Seattle at Philadelphia

Seattle at Philadelphia - Saturday
Recommendation: Under 2 and 2.5 (-123)

Last season Philadelphia had the second worst defense in the league conceding 49 goals. The main objective in the offseason was to improve the defense with the additions of Carlos Valdes and goalie Faryd Mondragon. So far they’ve made an impact as the Union lead the league in fewest goals allowed with only one through four games. Not only have the two additions paid off but it appears that the team has taken a more defensive approach by keeping several players back.

Perhaps as a result of the defensive focus, Philadelphia’s offense has sputtered. They are second to last in the league in goals scored with three and are last in both total shots taken and shots on goal (2.5 SOG per game).

Seattle’s offense has played well the last few weeks without Freddy Montero but it’s hard to see the goal scoring streak continuing this week against a defense that is playing so well. Although the Read more

New York at Philadelphia
Recommendation: New York pk (-121)

I made a play on New York last week against Houston and was disappointed not to come away with a victory as the Red Bulls dominated the second half of what ended up being a 1-1 draw. New York was very lethargic in the first half but after Dwayne De Rosario came in the second half they stepped up their game. The Red Bulls played nearly the entire second half in Houston territory and outshot the Dynamo 22-9. We should get a full game out of De Rosario this week and I expect both Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez to rebound from last week’s poor performance.

As for Philadelphia, it looks like the defense has improved quite a bit but the offense remains below average. Last week against the Galaxy the Union failed to register a shot on goal. This should be somewhat concerning considering they played the final 45 minutes with a man advantage. The Red Bull defense leads the MLS conceding only one goal in three matches this season and it Read more

Houston at New York – Saturday
Recommendation: New York -0.5 (-150)

Last week, New York took to the field in Columbus without six starters due to injuries and international call-ups. But on Saturday against Houston, the Red Bulls should have almost a full complement of players available for selection. New York will also be boosted by the return of Thierry Henry, who sat out last Saturday against the Crew with a slight hamstring injury. The Red Bulls have been very good at home compiling an 11-4-2 record since the start of the 2010 season. Houston on the other hand has not looked good. Last season they had one of the worst defenses in the league conceding 49 goals. This season they made a push to improve the defense and while it does look to be improved the offense has done very little. Last week’s 1-1 draw against Seattle was a bit misleading as they were badly outplayed and were lucky to come away with a point. Unlike the Sounders who have struggled to score goals this season the Red Bulls Read more

Saturday MLS Free Betting Pick: Los Angeles at Real Salt Lake

Los Angeles at Real Salt Lake - Saturday
Recommendation: Los Angeles pk and +0.5

Even though Real Salt Lake is on a league record 26-game home unbeaten streak I think it comes to an end on Saturday. Even though they are a deep team I see too many stars out for this week’s game. Midfielder Will Johnson and forwards Alvaro Saborio and Arturo Alvarez will join their respective national teams. Defender Jamison Olave missed last week’s game and his status for Saturday’s game is questionable. Real Salt Lake may be over looking this game as the second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Saprissa has far more importance than this early season MLS matchup.

The Galaxy is off to another fast start just like last season. They have to feel a little snake bitten coming away with a draw at home against New England last week after putting the ball in the net four times with three called back. The Galaxy will not be hit nearly as hard with international call-ups losing Read more

Vancouver at Philadelphia -0.5 O/U 2.5 – Saturday game
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Vancouver looked pretty impressive in its season opening 4-2 over Toronto. I think a lot it came from the emotion of playing their first-ever MLS game at home in front of a sellout crowd. It also came against what is likely to be one of the worst teams in the league. The Whitecaps will be hit hard this week by international call-ups with three starters (defenders Michael Boxall, Jay DeMerit and midfielder Russell Teibert) out for this Saturday’s game. Philadelphia on the other hand is expected to challenge for a playoff spot this season and got off to a great start last week by picking up all three points in a road win over Houston.

Even though they were an expansion team last season the Union was very strong at home putting up a 6-3-6 record – they should be even better in 2011. One of the main issues with this team last season was the poor defense, which conceded 49 goals (tied for Read more

Wisconsin-Green Bay vs. Michigan State pk
Recommendation: Michigan State

Obviously at 33-1 Wisconsin Green Bay had a very good season but that is mainly due to playing an easy schedule. Stick this team in the Big Ten and I doubt the finish with a .500 record. They really struggled last game against Arkansas-Little Rock, trailing for the majority of the game. The Spartans played a much tougher schedule with several games against teams in the top 25 while the Phoenix only played one top 25 team (Marquette) and lost. Surely this will not be a game that Michigan State will win easily but I think its tougher schedule will pay off here.

Oklahoma vs. Miami (FL) -7 O/U 140.5
Recommendation: Over

Here we have two teams that like to both get out and run. Both teams are ranked among the top offenses in the country. Miami averages 79.8 ppg, Oklahoma 76.1 ppg. The Sooners have some issues with turnovers and the Hurricanes are second in the nation in steals at 14 per game. I Read more

Los Angeles pk +115 at Seattle
Recommendation: Los Angeles

The Seattle Sounders come into this game pretty banged up. They lost starting midfielders Brad Evans and Steve Zakuani to injuries in their exhibition win over the Rapids last week. Also, forwards Mike Fucito and Nate Jaqua are both out. They did not have that good of an exhibition season and once again had troubles scoring goals.

The Galaxy has had the Sounders number with an all-time record of 4-1-1; 2-0-1 at Qwest Field including a 4-0 win last season. The Galaxy did lose their best player with Edson Buddle leaving in the offseason to try his hand in Germany, but replacements Juan Pablo Angel (formerly of New York) and Chad Barrett (Toronto FC) should be able to fill in nicely. With Landon Donovan and David Beckham serving up crosses, both players could be primed for big years. Defender Frankie Hejduk also arrived to supplement a defense that allowed the second-fewest goals (26) in the league last season, behind Real Salt Read more

MAC Tournament Betting Preview: Ball State vs. Kent State

Ball State vs. Kent State -5 O/U 132
Recommendation: Over

The Flashes have been very consistent on offense with only had a handful of bad performances – most of which early in the season. They’ve scored 70+ points in eight out of their last nine games and shot 46% during that span. Last night they struggled making only 3-of-17 three point shots and shot under 60% from the free throw line yet still managed to score 70+ points. The poor three-point and free throw shooting has not been the norm from the Golden Flashes and I look for them to have a much better effort today in those areas. This is not the typical Ball State team we have seen over the last few seasons where they did not average over 60 ppg in regulation in any of the last three seasons. This year they are shooting much better and have also picked up the pace pushing their scoring average up to 66.5 ppg. They’ve been in solid form the last few weeks averaging close to 70 ppg over their last 10 games. I Read more
