MLB Gambling Notes: Oswalt makes first start for Texas

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (Friedrich) at Texas (Oswalt) -200 O/U 10.5

Texas' Roy Oswalt will make his seasonable debut tonight against Colorado. Oswalt threw 100 pitches in his most recent start for Triple-A Round Rock.

"I feel great," Oswalt said in a conference call Wednesday. "I feel as good as I've always felt. I don't really have any complications anywhere right now. The biggest thing is to get back going and get a few starts under your belt where you have muscle memory and feel comfortable. You can start building off that."

"I think I'm pretty close," Oswalt said. "The biggest thing down here was to build some arm strength and get back into pitching shape. You can throw a lot of bullpens and lift a lot of weights, but until you get out there and compete against hitters and get into pitching shape, you can't duplicate Read more

MLB Handicapping: Oswalt nears return with Texas thin on arms

Bettors should expect to see Texas' Roy Oswalt toe the rubber soon. The Rangers have yet to announce a specific date but with the current state of the rotation (Feliz, Holland and Ogando all on the DL) it likely won't be long. Oswalt has made four minor league starts including a 100-pitch outing for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

MLB Betting News: Texas puts Feliz on DL, interested in acquiring Oswalt

05.23.2012     02:11 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas' Neftali Feliz is headed to the 15-day DL with an elbow strain. Feliz's transition from reliever to starter has had its ups and downs. According to FanGraphs, his effectiveness was limited due to some changes in repertoire.

Now, in 2012 as a starter, Feliz has seemingly lost the ability to miss bats. Depending on whether we look at his BIS numbers or PITCHf/x numbers, we might think Feliz is either struggling with location or hitting his locations well. BIS says his Zone% is near a career high; PITCHf/x says his Zone% is at a career low. Either way, it is not lower than 78%, which is still within the range of effectiveness for most starters.

Now the Rangers are looking to go after Roy Oswalt.

"... If Roy is a possibility, I want to visit with JD and see what the scouts told him that they had seen. I really think that Roy wants to come back. He Read more

MLB Betting Alert: Huge totals move in Phillies-Nationals game

06.01.2011     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
Philadelphia (Oswalt) -150 at Washington (Lannan) O/U 8

Significant move with this afternoon's total between Philadelphia and Washington. CRIS and Pinnacle opened the game at 7o-120 but a steady stream of action on the over has the current market price at 8o-120 with CRIS dealing an 8.5u-115. The Nationals are 12-13 O/U at home this season but the weather is expected to warm up considerably with game time temps in the low 90's and the wind blowing out to center 8-12 MPH. Philadelphia (Oswalt) -140 at New York (Capuano) O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

The Philadelphia Phillies (31-19) travel to Citi Field to take on division rival New York (23-26) for Friday. The Mets have scored more than three runs just once in their past nine games and must now face Roy Oswalt, who has posted some solid stats on the season with a 2.77 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and .245 BAA. Oswalt dominated in two other road starts at pitcher friendly parks, allowing just one total run in 11 innings at St. Louis and San Diego. The Mets are hitting just .246 and don’t figure to generate many scoring opportunities.

The Phillies have the best record in the National League and have gone 4-2 against the Mets at home this season. Philadelphia has the best pitching staff in the NL with a 3.04 ERA and .298 OBS while leading the NL in strikeouts with 418. The bullpen has been excellent to support the sensational starting staff, as Phillies relievers have a 2.64 ERA and .217 BAA.

MLB Betting Alert: Oswalt on 60-65 pitch count against St. Louis

05.17.2011     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
Philadelphia (Oswalt) at St. Louis (Garcia) -145 O/U 7

Tonight in St. Louis, Philadelphia's Roy Oswalt will make his first start since April 26. Oswalt was on the DL with back issues. As a result, he is expected to be on a fairly strict pitch count of 60-65 pitches.

"I felt pretty good," Oswalt said. "The biggest thing is just getting the arm strength going again and location. It may take a start or two to get going."

"I went through three or four starts when I didn't have 94, 95 mph, when you have to learn how to pitch," Oswalt said. "Velocity ain't no big deal to me. I feel like I can throw enough offspeed pitches and locate the ball well enough where I can pitch."

Manager Charlie Manuel said Oswalt will likely be limited to 60-65 pitches in his first start back. Manuel said it was preferable that Oswalt build endurance at the major Read more

MLB Handicapping: Buy Low on these starting pitchers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This young MLB season isn’t quite so young anymore. We’re six weeks into the campaign, and already, like every year, we’ve got a bevy of misleading statistics to work with. My goal in this article is to identify a handful of starting pitchers that are already mispriced.

As I’ve written before, handicapping is not about identifying good or bad teams – the standings do that. Many bettors, me included, tend to avoid making many wagers on the very best or against the very worst ballclubs – those teams tend to be priced appropriately. Instead, beating the modern betting marketplace is about identifying value squads (and in MLB, identifying value pitchers) – both good and bad – that are mispriced in the short to medium term.

Last year, the three most profitable MLB teams to support were the San Diego Padres, the Cincinnati Reds and the Toronto Blue Jays. Only one of the three made the playoffs and none were considered elite teams at any point in the campaign.

MLB Handicapping: Issues for Phillies starter Roy Oswalt

04.27.2011     01:44 PM     Printer Friendly
Keep an eye of Philadelphia starter Roy Oswalt over the next few weeks. Oswalt left Tuesday's start at Arizona after only three innings of work (5 earned runs, no strikeouts). It was discovered today that prior to the game Oswalt was talking on the phone with presumably a family member after tornadoes touched down near his Mississippi home. There are also concerns that Oswalt may be fighting a bad back. He left the team today to return home to check on his family. The Phillies have an off day on Thursday followed by a three-game series against the Mets. They then have Monday off before starting a three-game set against Washington.

“His stuff wasn’t good,” Manuel said. “His stuff wasn’t crisp and his velocity was down. I figured there was no sense in leaving him out there.”

Manuel said Oswalt didn’t say Read more

Will Philadelphia's pitching live up to the hype?

03.31.2011     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
A lot of hype surrounding the Philadelphia Phillies and their starting rotation. The Hilton posted the over/under on total wins for Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, and Roy Oswalt at 59.5. But while the foursome has the potential to put up big numbers (projected to be 17-18% better than the league average), some baseball experts are a bit more grounded in their analysis, especially when comparing them to other vaunted rotations from years past.

"Philadelphia could have a historically strong starting rotation," James wrote in an e-mail, "but even that is a gamble; it is almost equally likely we will find at the end of the year that they merely have a tremendously expensive starting rotation."

Another factor is the success of the 2010 Giants, who won the World Series with a pitching staff that ranked first in adjusted earned run average while its offense was Read more

Oddsmakers say 59.5 wins for Oswalt, Halladay, Lee and Hamels

03.03.2011     09:17 AM     Printer Friendly
A lot of hype surrounding the Philadelphia Phillies this season, especially the pitching staff which features Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt. The Phillies are prohibited favorites to win the National League East and reach the World Series. Las Vegas' Hilton Sportsbook posted various props on the team's pitching results. The combined number of Over/Under wins for the four aces is 59.5. They won a total of 58 games in 2010.

"So many things can happen. All you need is one injury, and three of these guys are in their 30s. Look, Cliff Lee missed [about a month] last year," Salmons said. "If any of these guys has any soreness at all, the team is going to shut him down and protect their investment."

2011 regular-season wins by the four aces - Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels:

All four combined: Over-under 59.5 -110

Halladay: Over 17.5 +110, Read more
